Dear Friend, When you hear the word Covenant, you may be awestruck and think thats a legal term that is above my pay grade. But since God wants to create and maintain a covenant relationship with you, is it something you should dismiss and forget about? Hardly! A covenant can be nothing more than a deal or a transaction. A Covenant can define ownership as well. It can even deed property from one person to another. Some covenants are arrived at. Youll find echoes of this kind of usage in the Bible. It is really interesting that God, who is the owner of everything, deeded specifically a plot of land to Abraham. It was some plot of land that ran all the way from the Nile River to the Euphrates River. Genesis 15:1 says: After these things the word of the Lord, came to Abraham in a vision. Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward. Wouldnt you call the piece of land that God was giving to Abraham an exceeding great reward? This was so awesome that Abraham wanted to verify that it really was Gods intent to give him such a huge piece of planet earth. So Abraham asked God, how will I know Im going to inherit it? Notice this interesting little aside. First of all, God says Im going to give you a piece of land. Well, for most of us that would be enough. But, what you may not realize is that, if youre going to pass title of a land from one person to another person there has to be some act of transfer. Something has to be done. In a real estate contract there must be consideration, for example, as a part of the arrangement, there has to be a date on the contract. All these details have to be there for the formal transfer of real estate. So Abraham, is asking how do I know Im going to inherit this? How will I know that it is mine? Youll find Gods instructions to Abraham in Genesis 15:9-10. Abraham followed Gods instructions and arranged the animal and bird carcasses as God instructed. And when the sun was setting, God said to Abraham, know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country that is not their own (12-13). When the sun was setting Abram fell into a very deep sleep, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the animal and fowl pieces. This was symbolic of God meeting Abraham between the halves of these animals. This is an ancient form of the establishment of a covenant. The sealing of the deal. You may think of a covenant in terms of promises, agreements, deals, contracts, laws, that sort of thing. But there is no question that in the Bible, covenants have to do with relationships. You need to understand what all of this has to do with your relationship you must have with Jesus Christ your Savior. Jesus promises you certain things, and you have obligations to meet if you will receive the promises. Learn what God expects of you in this covenant relationship.
