Volkswagen Motorsport Foreword
Dear Sir/Madam,
In motorsport, Volkswagen is synonymous with high performance, envi-
ronmentally-sound and efcient technology, and reliability. Our exten-
sive programme once again sees us committed to racing at the highest
level in 2014, as well as promoting junior and customer racing. Our
production and racing development departments work hand in hand.
This allows us to transfer our strengths from production to our racing
cars, whilst our customers also beneft from the experience gained on
the motorsport scene.
We were crowned World Rally Champion last season, thanks to a tech-
nically outstanding car and an extremely committed team. With a high-
ly-efcient and very powerful 1.6-litre turbo engine, the PoloRWRC
has taken on the role of the hunted in this years FIA World Rally
Championship. We have made a perfect start to our title defence and are also proud to have equalled
the record for the longest winning streak by one manufacturer in the WRC and after little over one
season.
The start of the circuit season sees us line up on asphalt too. The Scirocco R-Cup, with its natural gas
engine, demonstrates our vast expertise in environmentally-sound engines out on the racetrack. Our
newly developed racing engine is in action in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship and has
enjoyed immediate success. And we are also delighted to be able to support many young drivers
powered by Volkswagen in the British Formula 3 Championship, German ATS Formula 3 Cup and the
ADAC Formula Masters.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neuer

Volkswagen Motorsport Foreword
Dear Media Representative,
By the time the circuit racing season gets underway in May, Volkswa-
gen has already been hard at work on the motorsport scene. After win-
ning a hat-trick of titles in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)
last year, we have set our sights on bringing all three World Champi-
onships trophies back to Wolfsburg again this season. However, it is a
well-known fact that defending a title is more difcult than winning it in
the frst place.
For this reason, we are remaining true to ourselves and putting our
faith in what made us so strong in 2013. The team spirit at Volkswagen
is unparalleled. Every single person does everything in their power to
ensure success. However, any team is only as strong as its biggest weak-
ness. Our team has hardly any weaknesses, and is still hungry for success.
As well as our commitment in the pinnacle of rallying, we will once again run a multi-faceted pro-
gramme on the racetracks of this world in 2014. One of the lynchpins of this programme is the
Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup: now in its ffth year, the series continues to implement its tried-and-
tested concept, which features environmentally-sound technology and the Push-to-pass system. And
Volkswagen is also providing production-based and thoroughbred racing engines in Formula 3 series.
Powered by Volkswagen is also a seal of quality in many international racing series and junior
classes.
Volkswagen is embarking on new adventures with Marklund Motorsport in the FIA World Rallycross
Championship, and Volkswagen of America together with Andretti Motorsport in Global Rallycross. The
Polo RX Supercar and Global Rallycross Beetle will be driven by proven and talented drivers giving
them every opportunity to challenge for victory in one of the most exciting forms of motorsport around.
This Media Guide provides you with detailed information on the various areas of our motorsport pro-
gramme. Our communication team, under the guidance of Andre Dietzel, is always more than happy to
answer any questions or queries you may have.

Volkswagen in
motorsport:
in action around the world
Volkswagen Motorsport Programme 06
Whether the World Rally Championship on four continents, national
one-make cups or the international promotion of junior drivers
Volkswagens commitment to motorsport is consistently based on
production-based technology, and technology based on production
vehicles. The close cooperation between production developers and
motorsport engineers ensures that both sides are able to beneft from
innovations: production technology proves itself in motorsport, while
racing know-how fnds its way into production development.
Volkswagen fnds itself in the role of the hunted in the FIA World Rally
Championship (WRC). Having won all the World Championship titles
on ofer in the Polo R WRCs debut year, the World Rally Car from
Wolfsburg is now the car that the teams from remaining three manu-
facturers are out to beat at events on four continents from the leg-
endary Monte and classics in Sweden, Portugal and Argentina, to
the Rally Australia and on gravel, asphalt, ice and snow. The goal is
clear for Volkswagen: to be crowned World Champion again.
Whether we are up against strong opponents at the highest techno-
logical and sporting level in the World Rally Championship or promot-
ing young drivers in one-make cups and entry-level, one-seater series
around the world, Volkswagen always uses production-based tech-
nology, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. Part of the
philosophy of the Volkswagen brand involves demonstrating our engi-
neering achievements, not only with high-class commercial products
but also on the motorsport scene. Both sides production development
and the motorsport department beneft from the active transfer of
know-how between the two specialist departments.
Project title defence: the WRC
The torrid heat of South America on the one hand, icy Scandinavian
temperatures on the other the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)
not only combines climatic extremes in one motorsport series, but also
features a diverse range of surfaces, which must be taken into con-
sideration when developing a car for the World Rally Championship.
The scope of surfaces encountered in the WRC ranges from gravel,
mud and shingle to ice and snow. Volkswagen is taking on this new
challenge with the Polo R WRC, which has been the subject of detailed
further developments, and a select squad of drivers. At the wheel of
Volkswagen Motorsport Programme 07 07
the World Rally Car from Wolfsburg with the World Champions num-
ber 1 are Sbastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F), the number 2 car is
driven by Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) and the third car
number 9 by Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko Markkula (N/FIN).
Typical Volkswagen: the Scirocco R-Cup
Now in its ffth year, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup provides young
touring car drivers with driving, tactical and technical training, and
allows them to go head to head with experienced pros. A host of other
ideas make the series an innovative force among national and interna-
tional one-make cups.
Made in Wolfsburg: when the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup was held
for the frst time in 2010, it combined numerous fundamentally new
ideas. Thanks to its natural gas engine, it signifcantly reduces the
amount of CO
2
emissions involved a unique feature in a motorsport
environment. Innovative concepts like the Push-to-Pass system, which,
at the push of a button, allows the driver to briefy call upon an extra
50 hp of power, result in exciting battles and a tactical element previ-
ously absent from one-make cups.
The Junior and Pro classes also ensure the feld is both varied and
high-class. The Legend Cup will no longer be held in 2014. Instead,
high-class guest starters will line up at the seasons nine races, which
are held over the course of six events.
XXL action: Volkswagen in Rallycross
In 2014, Volkswagen will start in two internationally renowned Ral-
lycross championships. The Polo will appear in the FIA World Rally-
cross Championship. Marklund Motorsport has developed the Polo
RX Supercar for the 2014 season. The 560-hp (412 kW) Rallycross
Polos will be driven by Toomas Topi Heikkinen, the 2013 Global
Rallycross champion, and Swedens Anton Marklund. In cooperation
with Volkswagen of America, Andretti Autosport will line up in the
Global Rallycross series with a Beetle. And they do so with a strong
driver line-up: Tanner Foust and Scott Speed will be at the wheel of the
Global Rallycross Beetle, which also generates 560 hp.
Volkswagen Motorsport Programme 08 08
Formula 3: catalyst for big careers
Motorsport legends, such as Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen
and Bernd Schneider all took the frst steps towards their careers in
Formula One, Le Mans and the DTM in Formula 3 and powered by
Volkswagen at that. The career catalyst from Wolfsburg is still in great
demand in 2014: Volkswagen continues to act as engine supplier to
the worlds most important single-seater junior series with a newly
developed, thoroughbred 2-litre racing engine.
In 2014, Volkswagen engines will be used by numerous teams in the
FIA Formula 3 European Championship, the British Formula 3 Cham-
pionship and the German Formula 3 Cup. Volkswagen also plays a
crucial role at Formula 3 Grands Prix: Antnio Flix da Costa secured
Volkswagens eighth victory in the unofcial Formula 3 World Cham-
pionship at the fnal race of the season in Macau in 2012 no other
manufacturer has enjoyed greater success there. In 2013 the young
Portuguese driver fnished runner-up.
Between 1982 and 1991, and after its return as engine supplier in
2007, Volkswagen has claimed over 60 international titles in
Formula 3 championships. In 2013, Marvin Kirchhfer won the ATS
Formula 3 Cup to add another championship to the list of triumphs,
while Jordan King also won the British Formula 3 Championship.
Powered by Volkswagen: the ADAC Formula Masters
For many young drivers, it is the frst step towards higher single-seater
classes after karting: the ADAC Formula Masters. A 1.4-litre engine,
consistently modifed in line with the demands of motorsport and
powered by Volkswagen is the power source for the standard,
single-seater cars used in the ADAC Formula Masters. The car
responds well with virtually no modifcations, allowing the youngsters
to concentrate fully on the most important thing: racing.
Volkswagen models for the basis for championships around the world
A global idea for national championships. Whether in the Polo cups
in India and South Africa, the Scirocco R-Cup China, the Volkswagen
Castrol-Cup Poland with the Golf, or Formula Volkswagen in South
Africa: what combines Volkswagens global involvement on the motor-
sport scene is its commitment to production-based technology.

The Project:
Title defence
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Commitment 13
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Commitment
On gravel, asphalt, ice and snow from January to November,
Volkswagen line up for the project title defence in the FIA World Rally
Championship (WRC). Last years World Champions in Driver and
Co-Driver classifcations, Sbastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (F/F),
together with team-mates Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/
FIN), are also the team to beat in the Manufacturers Championship,
in which they can count on support from Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko
Markkula (N/FIN).
We line up with the number 1 on a Polo R WRC this season, said
Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. That honour is reserved
for the World Champion, and is something we are very proud of. How-
ever, that does not mean that we will be presumptuous or complacent
at the rallies. We approach the task in hand with the greatest respect,
maximum concentration and absolute commitment. It is easier to win
a World Championship title than it is to successfully defend it. But pre-
cisely that is our goal. Each rally will give us an indication of how we
compare to the new and new-look opposition. We are looking forward
to it.
Tried-and-tested team vs. new challengers
Three Polo R WRCs and a proven sextet: Volkswagen lines up in the
2014 WRC with an unchanged team of Sbastien Ogier/Julien Ingras-
sia, Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila and Andreas Mikkelsen/Mikko
Markkula. It will, however face a new opponent and some old foes
who have rung the changes: Kris Meeke and Mads stberg will drive
for Citron, who have won the Manufacturers World Championship
on eight occasions, including fve titles in a row. Among those racing
for M-Sport are Mikko Hirvonen and former Formula One driver Rob-
ert Kubica. Hyundai returns to the World Rally Championship as a
manufacturer in 2014, and lines up with last years runner-up Thierry
Neuville as its number one driver.
Tried-and-tested calendar, plus new territory for the WRC
The World Rally Championship will visit 13 countries on four conti-
nents in 2014. On the agenda: a dozen tried-and-tested venues that
graced the calendar in 2013, and one newcomer instead of the Rally
Greece, the WRC circus takes its battle for World Championship points
to Poland. The season kicked of with a genuine classic the iconic
14 14
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Commitment
Rally Monte Carlo. This was followed in Europe by the Rallies in Swe-
den and Portugal, as well as events in Italy, Finland, Germany, France,
Spain and Great Britain over the course of the season. The teams also
travel to Mexico in North America and Argentina in South America.
Another real highlight comes at the Rally Australia on the ffth conti-
nent.
Tried-and-tested format, new rules
A tried-and-tested format with new rules the 2014 World Rally
Championship sees the introduction of a number of new features for
fans and competitors alike. The hitherto existing qualifying at gravel
rallies has been scrapped. Instead, the cars will start according to the
standings in the World Championship on day one, with the overall
leader frst onto the route. Detailed amendments have also been made
to the rules, which allow competitors to return to action after a retire-
ment under Rally-2 regulations. The itineraries of each round of the
World Championship are to be standardised over the course of the
season. In the future, rallies will open with the starting ceremony on the
Thursday and fnish with the fnal special stage around midday on the
Sunday. The fnal stage will also always form the Power Stage, which is
broadcast live on TV, and on which bonus points are up for grabs for
the three fastest drivers.

A love of detail,

FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Technology 16
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Technology
Steel, aluminium and carbon in its most efcient form the Volkswa-
gen Polo R WRC for the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The
3,000 individual parts that make up the chassis, together with the
engines 300 components, have been cleverly thought through on sev-
eral technological levels. A combination of absolute reliability, consist-
ent lightweight construction, outstanding ease of service, and impres-
sive performance was instrumental in the 315-hp (232 kW) World
Rally Car from Wolfsburg winning all three World Championship titles
on its debut in 2013. With this years mission to defend the hat-trick
of titles, the new Polo R WRC features a number of detailed improve-
ments in 2014. The four-wheel drive powerhouse will once again have
to prove itself in the face of a wide range of adversities.
A car for all conditions
a diverse range of challenges
Flat-out and close to the road on smooth tarmac one minute, drifting
sideways over ice and snow the next, and bounding over raw gravel
shortly after not to mention scorching heat here and freezing cold
there. No other top motorsport championship ofers such a vast range
of climatic conditions and surfaces. Whether being fung round tight
hairpins on one of the many snake-like stages or subjected to a stress
test on full-throttle sections with jumps of up to 60 metres a World
Rally Car must be able to master any terrain. The fundamental desire
to get from A to B as quickly as physically possible is in its DNA.
Made possible by clever solutions
The details behind the performance
Volkswagens World Rally Car is based on the road-going model and
namesake of the Polo R WRC. The homologated model provides the
basis for the body shell, which the regulations stipulate must not be
altered for use in the WRC. The bonnet and tailgate also come from
the production model, with the only modifcation being the striking air
inlet holes, which are assembled subsequently. The Polo R WRC for the
World Rally Championship, whose body shell rolls of the assembly
line at the Volkswagen plant in Pamplona, has also been broadened
to the maximum 1,820 millimetres permitted by the WRC regulations.
From an aerodynamic point of view, wider fenders, the expansive rear
wing, front and rear skirts, and a partially encased undercarriage
ensure the best possible airfow around the car.
17 17
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Technology
Permanent four-wheel drive uses mechanical multi-disc, self-locking
diferential on the front and rear axle to convert the World Rally Cars
315 hp into drive. Perfect contact with the road is not only ensured by
the Michelin tyres 18-inch for asphalt and 15-inch for gravel, ice
and snow but also by the sophisticated independent suspension. For
example, the ZF damper and spring units are key to the perfect set-up
of the chassis. In combination with the maps for the traction and com-
pression phases, the engineers can then, in theory, select from 92,160
diferent set-up variants.
Under the bonnet, a 1.6-litre straight-four turbo engine, in line with
the Global Race Engine Concept, generates 315 hp, which is ef-
ciently limited in accordance with regulations by an air restrictor.
The straight-four engine with turbocharger and intercooling inhales
its air through an opening of just 33 millimetres. This would be com-
parable to a top athlete running the 100 metres whilst breathing
through a snorkel. And yet it still manages to achieve impressive
fgures: the 315 hp (232 kW) are achieved at 6,250 rpm, with the
maximum torque of 425 Nm at 5,000 rpm. A sophisticated anti-lag
system minimises the so-called turbo lag at low engine speeds, and
produces the distinctive staccato crack, which can be heard for miles
around. The Polo R WRC accelerates from nought to 100 km/h in
3.9 seconds. Depending on the transmission ratio, the top speed is
around 200 km/h.
Fit to go in a matter of minutes
the service-friendly Polo R WRC
The engineers and technicians in the World Rally Championship have
only a very limited amount of time to repair and maintain the World
Rally Cars. As a rule, a normal rally day includes a 15-minute ser-
vice in the morning, a 30-minute service at midday, and a 45-minute
service in the evening. When it comes to ensuring the rally cars are
sent back out on their journey in the best possible condition, despite
the enormous stresses and strains they are subjected to on the spe-
cial stages, every second counts. As well as the well-oiled Volkswa-
gen team, Sbastien Ogier, Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkels-
ens technicians can also count on the service-friendly design of the
PoloRWRC. It takes less than 60 seconds to change the wheels, while
the gearbox can be replaced in under twelve minutes.
18 18
FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Technology
In order to guarantee seamless and perfectly coordinated services,
Volkswagen turned to the experience of its mechanics when develop-
ing the Polo R WRC as well as the performance and durability of the
individual components, this is an extremely important criterion when it
comes to efciency.
Modifed for absolute reliability
New details for 2014
The Polo R WRC was the subject of detailed improvements ahead of
the 13 rallies that make up the 2014 season. In making these modi-
fcations, the Volkswagen engineers were subject to very strict restric-
tions. The manufacturers involved in the 2013 World Rally Champi-
onship had agreed not to homologate any new World Rally Cars for
the 2014 season. That left Volkswagen with very little room to play
with within the regulations. This game played under strict rules did, for
example, allow changes to some components to be made on a quar-
terly or free basis. In 2014, newly developed ZF dampers will be in
use. Furthermore, Volkswagen was allowed to play ten so-called Jok-
ers, which allow a manufacturer to modify the components in question
so that they difer to the specifcations in the homologation documents.
The Jokers were played mainly to further improve the durability of
the Polo R WRC. The World Rally Car from Wolfsburg proved itself to
be hugely reliable in 2013. Over the course of the entire season, the
Volkswagen engineers registered not a single retirement due to a tech-
nical fault. The use of the Jokers is aimed at reducing the number of
retirements caused by aggressive driving for example, by ftting rein-
forced chassis components.

The Frenchman was something of a late-starter in rally terms, only
joining the sport at the age of 22 and that despite the iconic Rally

the French Maritime Alps. However, when Sbastien Ogier made his
frst appearance in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) just
two years after his frst rally, he did not need much time to adapt. He
immediately scored a World Championship point on his debut in Mex-
ico in an S1600 car. However, the dominance he showed in winning
the Junior World Rally Championship (JWRC) in the same year was
only the start of a spectacular rise in the World Rally Championship, in
which Ogier already had seven race wins to his name before starting
with the Polo R WRC in 2013.
Prior to his frst complete World Championship season in Citrons jun-
ior team in 2009, he made a guest start in the Intercontinental Rally
Challenge (IRC) at his home event, the Monte and won at the frst
attempt. The following year, Ogier claimed his frst World Champion-
ship victory at the Rally Portugal, and was soon promoted to the French
works team as a result. Ogier quickly established himself as world
champion Sbastien Loebs biggest rival and pushed his compatriot all
the way in the race for the Drivers Championship. Despite fve wins
the same number as Loeb and a further two podiums, Ogier ulti-
mately had to settle for third place overall. One nice consolation was
his victory at the Race of Champions at the end of the year, which he
contested as a Volkswagen works driver.
The biggest success of his career came in 2013: driving for Volkswa-
gen, Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were crowned World Rally
Champions for the frst time on the back of nine race wins. And to cap
it all, the title came in the debut season for the Polo R WRC, which he
helped to develop.

Just like his driver Sbastien Ogier, Julien Ingrassias career to date has
seen him rise dramatically through the ranks of his sport. No wonder:
after all, the two Frenchmen frst joined forces early on in their careers
when they won a one-make cup in France. What follows is a modern
rallying fairy tale: victory in the 2008 FIA Junior World Rally Champi-
onship (JWRC), frst outing in a World Rally car, frst stage win in the
World Championship and all that in the same year.
Ingrassias progress as Ogiers co-driver continued at speed. In Janu-
ary 2009 the pair won the iconic Rally Monte Carlo at the frst attempt,
and then caused a stir in the World Rally Championship whilst driving
for Citron. One year later they won their frst World Championship
rally together in Portugal, after which they were promoted into the
French manufacturers works team. There too they performed superbly,
fnishing second and frst in their frst two starts as works drivers, out-
performing their team-mate Sbastien Loeb on both occasions.
In 2011, Ingrassia and Ogier won a further fve World Championship
rallies and were in with a shout of winning the Drivers title right down
to the fnal race. The pair then both switched to Volkswagen Motor-
sport, where they started work on the development of the Polo R WRC,
with which they promptly won the titles in the Drivers, Co-Drivers and
Manufacturers Championships at the frst attempt.
Before starting out on a professional rallying career, Ingrassia com-
pleted an economics degree in 2002 and went on to work in the auto-
motive and drinks industry. He enjoys spending his free time on the
coast when not trying his hand behind the wheel of a rally car.

FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) Drivers
Jari-Matti Latvala

Even before his birth, there was a very good chance that Jari-Matti
Latvala would become a professional rally driver. His father, Jari,
had been racing in rallies since 1981, during which time the Latvalas
became a true rally family. Jari-Matti was still mastering the art of
walking when he completed his frst laps in a go-kart at the age of just
four. When he was eight, his father gave him his frst rally car. By ten,
Jari-Matti was practicing rally driving on frozen lakes in Finland.
Jari-Matti Latvala took his frst steps in professional rallying before
he even came of age, making his World Rally Championship debut
in Great Britain in 2002. He then spent four years gaining valuable
experience with diferent cars in various teams, before contesting his
frst full World Championship season for Stobart-Ford in 2007. Latvala
regularly fnished in the points, with the icing on the cake coming at
the Rally Ireland, where he came home in third place. Promoted to a
Ford works driver the following year, Latvala and his co-driver Miikka
Anttila claimed their frst win at a WRC event at the Rally Sweden. At
the age of just 22, this made Latvala the youngest winner in the history
of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) a record that still stands
today. Since then, Latvala has won at least one World Championship
rally every season. He has also fnished in the top four of the overall
standings for the last six years.
In his free time, Latvala likes to relax by playing a lot of sport. This
allows him to fnd a balance between relaxation and the demanding
and sometimes hectic life of a rally driver. He is not one for lounging
around, although he does prefer to sit about sweating during the sum-
mer months in a sauna, preferably at a lake in his home country of
Finland.

They have been through many highs and lows together: Miikka Anttila
and Jari-Matti Latvala are a well-oiled team in the rally cockpit and
can always depend on each other 100 per cent. The bond between
the two Finns is so deep that Anttila even missed the birth of his second
child in 2011, as he was at the Rally Spain with Latvala.
From the mid-1990s until Anttila established himself as the man at Lat-
valas side in 2003, he had sat in the passenger seat as the co-driver
to many a Finnish rally driver. The fact that Anttila ever became a
co-driver in the sport of rallying is down to a complete coincidence. An
automotive engineering student that time, a neighbour invited him to
help prepare a rally car in Finland in 1993. However, Anttila was more
interested in the job of co-driver, and in 1995 he replied to an adver-
tisement placed in a newspaper by the Finnish Motorsport Federation
for a place on a training course for co-drivers successfully, of course.
Anttilas move to Volkswagen Motorsport in 2013 sees him return to
the manufacturer, with whom he celebrated his frst success at the
start of his rally career. Together with Mikko Hirvonen he won the F2
category of the 2002 Finnish Rally Championship in a Golf kit car. He
has also been loyal to Volkswagen in his private life for many years:
during his free time, he works passionately on his classic Golf GTI.

Andreas Mikkelsen is a true all-rounder. With his heart initially set on
a career as a professional skier, he was called up for the Norwegian
junior team at the age of twelve a feat he also achieved on the moto-
cross scene. However, a knee injury brought his promising downhill
skiing career to a premature end, prompting Mikkelsen to switch to ral-
lying when he was 16.
The Norwegian moved to Great Britain in 2006, in order to be able to
take his driving test at the age of 17. He passed his test just a few days
after his 17th birthday and promptly lined up at the Quinton Stages
Rally which he won to become the youngest winner in the history of
the British rally. He made his debut in the FIA World Rally Champion-
ship (WRC) in the same year, and went on to fnish in the top ten at
three of the eight World Championship events he entered in 2007.
Fifth place at the 2008 Rally Sweden when just 17 years and 233 days
old earned him a place in the rallying history.
In the same year, Mikkelsen worked with two-time World Rally Cham-
pion Marcus Grnholm to improve his driving style. This proved to be
a successful move: after claiming frst place in the 2009 Norwegian
Rally Championship, Mikkelsen burst onto the international stage when
he won the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) at the wheel of
a koda Fabia Super 2000. As well as successfully defending his IRC
title, he also contested eight rounds of the World Championship for
Volkswagen Motorsport in a koda Super 2000 in 2012. Mikkelsen
lined up at nine rounds of the 2013 World Rally Championship with
the Polo R WRC.

Everyone always has room for improvement that is what drives me
on, says Mikko Markkula. A glance at the Finns successful record
shows that he backs up his words with actions. Before he took part in
his frst rally in 2000, he had already completed fve years of inten-
sive training at the side of Finnish drivers and co-drivers, such as Risto
Mannisenmki and Timo Rautiainen.
Having gained national recognition through success including second
place in the 2002 Finnish Rally Championship as Jarkko Miettinens
co-driver, Markkula began making a name for himself on the interna-
tional scene alongside compatriot Juho Hnninen in 2007. The duo
made its breakthrough after switching to koda Motorsport: the frst
race win in the Intercontinental Rally Championship (IRC) in 2009
was followed one year later by the title. For the last two years, Mark-
kula has narrowly missed out on the IRC Title, fnishing just behind a
fellow koda driver on both occasions: Andreas Mikkelsen the man
for whom he has been reading the pace notes at Volkswagen Mot-
orsport since 2013. Markkula had a taste of things to come with the
PoloRWRC in 2011, when he was involved in testing with his driver at
the time Juho Hnninen.
Markkula spends his free time on motorcycles or playing football with

A success story:
Volkswagen in rallying
Rallying history 39
Rallying history
From zero to World Rally Champion: Volkswagen celebrated the
greatest success in the brands motorsport history in the 2013 FIA
World Rally Championship (WRC). In the manufacturers debut sea-
son, all three titles in the Drivers, Co-Drivers and Manufacturers
Championships went to Wolfsburg. The motorsport fairy tale was no
fuke. In competing in the WRC, Volkswagen is adding another chap-
ter to its successful history in rallying. It was back in the 1970s when
Volkswagen began developing rally cars based on the frst generation
of Golfs, and it was not long before the manufacturer had its hands
on its frst national rally titles, such as the one in Germany. The brand
celebrated its international breakthrough with the second generation
of its bestseller: Kenneth Eriksson/Peter Diekmann (S/D) won the title
in the newly created Group A World Championship at the wheel of
a Golf GTI 16V in 1986. The media attention repeatedly focussed
on David in the 200-hp Golf taking on the mighty Goliaths of
the Group B class, with their 500-hp plus proto types. World Cham-
pion Volkswagen played a pioneering role with its production-based
Golf GTI 16V: Group A became the new pinnacle of the World Rally
Championship in 1987, when the unreserved and cost-intensive
Group B was abolished. Eriksson/Diekmann won the Rally Ivory Coast
that year, while their fellow Volkswagen pairing of Erwin Weber/Mat-
thias Feltz (D/D) also in a Golf GTI 16V also caught the eye with
two podium fnishes in Argentina and the Ivory Coast.
In 1989, Stig Blomqvist/Bjrn Cederberg (S/S) claimed another
podium fnish in the Golf GTI 16V at what was at the time by far the
longest and most demanding event on the World Championship cal-
endar the iconic Safari Rally. One year later, the pairing of Weber/
Feltz was back on the podium having fnished third at the challenging
Rally New Zealand in a Golf Rally G60.
Title hat-trick: the Volkswagen era at the Dakar Rally
Volkswagen enjoyed its greatest successes in motorsport after the
turn of the millennium. The manufacturers most recent motorsport
history is dominated by the era of Volkswagen on the marathon rally
scene. From 2003 onward, Volkswagen concentrated the works side
of its activities on outings at desert rallies. In 2009, 2010 and 2011
Volkswagen completes an impressive hat-trick of titles at the Dakar
Rally.

43
Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Championship
Since making its debut in 2010, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup has
become a real crowd favourite on DTM race weekends. This success
is not down to chance: the one-make cup ofers an attractive overall
concept for drivers and fans alike and it does so in an environmen-
tally-sound manner, courtesy of the natural gas engine. The identical
cars used in the series are looked after centrally. Only air pressure,
anti-roll bar and the position of the seat and steering wheel can be
adjusted.
The attractive composition of the starting feld ensures plenty of
variety. A mixture of talented youngsters, old hand and prominent
guest starters provides the necessary spice and guarantees thrilling
racing.
The drivers can put their foot down with a clear conscience. Thanks
to its innovative natural gas engine, the Cup-Scirocco gives of signif-
icantly less CO
2
emissions than similar racing cars with conventional
engines. The worlds largest supplier of natural gas, Gazprom, has
been on board as the supplier of the environmentally-friendly fuel
since 2013. With the alternative fuel on board, the 285-hp Scirocco
is a powerful racing car that even newcomers to motorsport can push
hard with little practice.
Push-to-pass function: action at the push of a button
The one-make cups environmentally-sound drive concept is the only
one of its type in the world, as is a function that makes the action out
on the racetrack even more exciting: the so-called Push-to-pass button.
A red button on the steering wheel briefy increases the supercharging
pressure and boosts the two-litre engines performance from 235 hp to
285 hp: literally action at the push of a button.
The frequency with which the drivers can activate this electronically
regulated system is limited. This introduces a tactical element for
the drivers. The button should not be used exclusively for overtak-
ing purposes, but also to fend of an attack or set faster lap times
during key phases of the race. Fans at the circuit and watching on
TV are always kept up to speed. LED displays on the cars show how
much of his Push-to-pass allowance a driver still has at his/her dis-
posal.

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Championship
Ten rounds at attractive racetracks
Since it was launched in 2010, the Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup has
been a partner series of the DTM (German Touring Car Champion-
ship), Germanys most important touring car series. The 2014 season
consists of ten races spread over six events. On top of this comes an
additional show race for the frst time, which will be held in Moscow in
July. As well as the two highlights in Hockenheim, the traditional venue
of the season- opener and fnale, the race at the Norisring in late July
is a real treat for drivers and fans.
The series also takes a trip into neighbouring Austria for the race in
Spielberg. After the opening race, the proximity of the second race
weekend in Oschersleben to Wolfsburg makes it something of a home
event for the brand. At the season-opener in Hockenheim, and the
weekends in Oschersleben, Spielberg and at the Nrburgring, points
will also be up for grabs in a second race on the Sunday. A change
has been made to the format here: the grid positions for the second
race are no longer the top eight drivers from race one in reverse order,
but are determined based on the second-fastest qualifying times of
each driver.
A big backdrop, with tens of thousands of fans at the circuit, is guaran-
teed at every event. The Cup is broadcast in Germany by SPORT1 and
SPORT1+ almost 39 million watched the race reports on television in
2013.
Guest starters add to appeal
Another reason for the enormous popularity of the Volkswagen
Scirocco R-Cup is its diversity. Juniors, pros and legends go head to
head in two diferent competitions. Top sports stars from other disci-
plines also embraced the competition out on the track. While there
will no longer be a separate Legends competition in 2014, fans can
still look forward to prominent guest starters. Stars like Formula One
World Champion Damon Hill, Indy-500 winner Arie Luyendyk and
rally champion Carlos Sainz have set the fans pulses racing. As have
former DTM stars: Nicola Larini, Christian Danner, Laurent Aiello and
Klaus Niedzwiedz have also been involved in thrilling duels.

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Technology
In the Scirocco R-Cup, Volkswagen combines motorsport with environ-
mental consideration in a unique manner. Volkswagen is the market
leader in production models with natural gas engines, and consistently
implements this technology in motorsport. The Scirocco R-Cup is the
only one-make cup in the world, in which the standard cars are pow-
ered by natural gas, thus ofering motor racing with a green heart. The
CO
2
emissions are signifcantly lower than with conventional fuel.
The Cup shows high performance, environmental awareness and
emotions can go hand in hand the sound of the natural gas Scirocco
is a delight for any motorsport fan, says Hans-Joachim Strietzel
Stuck, President of the German motorsport association (DMSB) and
Volkswagen Motorsport representative. The worlds largest natural gas
producer, Gazprom, is on board for the second time this season as
exclusive partner.
Environmentally-sound and a true racer
The Cup Scirocco is powered by a two-litre turbo engine. The basic
TIS engine from the Scirocco R, the sports version of the coup, forms
the basis for the power train, which has been optimised for racing
purposes. The engineers have taken the TSI engine and developed a
CNG racing version, which generates up to 285 hp. In contrast to con-
ventional engines, for example, special valves are used for the natural
gas version. The system pressure of 200 bar corresponds to that of the
production cars. The crash test proved fuel tank holds 22 kilograms of
natural gas, which is the equivalent of about 35 litres of conventional
fuel. It is located in the interior of the car behind the drivers seat and
protected by the roll cage. The production car was also the inspiration
for the power transmission, which uses the DSG gearbox.
It goes without saying that huge emphasis was also placed on safety
when developing this environmentally-sound racer. The Cup Scirocco
has been equipped with a roll cage and a fre extinguishing system, in
line with FIA norms. The racing seat also has padded head protection.
A six-point safety harness and the obligatory HANS system protect the
driver in the event of an accident.

Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Race team
ABT Sportsline
ensure equal opportunity
in the Scirocco R-Cup
63
Volkswagen Scirocco R-Cup Race team
Volkswagen guarantees participants in the Scirocco R Cup the highest
possible degree of equal opportunity. This task is implemented by the
racing experts at ABT Sportsline. The Volkswagen cars used in the one-
make cup have been prepared and run centrally by the racing spe-
cialists since 1998. The identical build of the Cup-Scirocco, on which
only details like air pressure, steering wheel height and seat position
can be modifed, means an awful lot of work over the course of a race
weekend. As the Cup cars are swapped between the drivers after each
race, the sponsors slogans, wheels and compensation ballast must
also be exchanged.
ABT Sportsline and Volkswagen Motorsport complement one another
excellently: both parties have a wealth of experience in motorsport on
multiple levels, said Hans-Jrgen Abt. As Technical Manager within
the Kempten-based team, Hans Top is responsible for the prepara-
tion and running of the car, as well as logistics. He can count on the
work of a 26-man crew. Not only is the team in action at every race,
but also at trials and introductory courses. Then there are also other
Volkswagen events over the course of the year, said Top.
A family company with a history of sporting success
Founded by Johann Abt as a farriers in 1896, the company can look
back on a long list of sporting successes. Titles came in the Swedish
Touring Car Championship and the DTM, and the company was not
only represented as a team with the name ABT. Christian Abt, joint
owner of the company alongside his brother Hans-Jrgen, spent many
years driving in the DTM. His nephew Daniel is currently racing in the
GP2 series and Formula E.
The absolute highlights in the history of the Abt Sportsline team, which
has been involved in touring car racing since 1996, are the titles it
won in the DTM all with Audi. In 2002, rank outsider Laurent Aiello
was triumphant in the Abt-Audi TT-R a milestone. Mattias Ekstrm
repeated the feat with the Audi A4 DTM in 2004. In 2007, 2008 and
2009 the popular team from the Allgu region of Germany won a
hat-trick of titles. Abt was not only successful in the DTM, but also in
the ADAC GT Masters: the driver title went to Kempten in 2009, to be
followed by the team title in 2010. Abt Sportsline lines up in the new
Formula E series in 2014.

Volkswagen in
Formula 3:

generation
66
Formula 3 Commitment
Power for careers: its tradition stretches back as far as the 1950s,
yet participation in it is still an investment in the future. Even today,
Formula 3 is one of the best-known junior classes in international
motorsport and has always been regarded as a springboard for
promising youngsters into the pinnacle of single-seater racing
Formula One. Volkswagen is committed solely as engine supplier to
the junior class, which churns out Formula One stars. The Volkswa-
gen brand can look back on a long tradition and successful tradi-
tion through its involvement in Formula 3. Between 1982 and 1991,
just in the German Formula 3 Championship seven titles went to
Volkswagen drivers. These included motorsport stars such as eight-
time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen and seven-time For-
mula One World Champion Michael Schumacher.
Knowing how important this junior class was as a learning period
for the motorsport stars of tomorrow, Volkswagen stepped up
its involvement in Formula 3 in 2007. As in previous seasons,
Volkswagen will once again count on a three-way commitment to
Formula3 in 2014. As well as the Formula 3 European Champion-
ship and British Formula 3 Championship, the focus will once again
be on the German ATS Formula 3 Cup.
Promoting talent with frst-rate technology
The brand ofers many attractive opportunities for those wishing to
enter the world of single-seater racing. The ADAC Formula Masters,
for which Volkswagen is the exclusive engine supplier, is aimed at tal-
ented youngsters taking their next step after karting. It is then possi-
ble to advance to a higher-level Formula 3 series. The successful driv-
ers here have the best chance of switching to renowned series like the
DTM, GP2 and, last but not least, Formula One. Because Formula 3
does not use standard cars, each racing team has the opportunity to
further develop its own cars within the framework of the regulations.
This not only presents the young drivers with outstanding opportuni-
ties to learn how to successfully manage single-seater cars at a high
level, but also talented race engineers and mechanics. The result is
the promotion of talent coupled with frst-rate technology.

Formula 3 Technology
Volkswagen will once again set benchmarks with two diferent engine
concepts in Formula 3 in 2014. The engine concept successfully imple-
mented since autumn 2007 in the FIA Formula 3 European Champi-
onship has been replaced by a new engine. This heralds the start of
a new era: more performance, better handling out with the 210-hp
generation of Formula 3 engines, in with the new generations 225 hp.
The national series that form the foundation for the European Cham-
pionship, on the other hand, will put their faith in the tried-and-tested
Formula 3 engines: the familiar drivelines will still be used in the British
Formula 3 Championship and the German ATS Formula 3 Cup.
The ATS Formula 3 Cup the premier league of Formula 3 employs
a new engine concept in 2014: after Volkswagen supplied a standard
engine with Push-to-pass technology (Volkswagen Power Engine) for
the past two seasons, the teams will take to the track with thoroughbred
Formula 3 engines in 2014.
The new engine regulations in Formula 3 ofer Volkswagen a fan-
tastic opportunity to continue to prove its technological expertise in
this important junior class, said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost
Capito. Volkswagen has developed a lot of outstanding, thorough-
bred racing engines in the recent past. We have won the Dakar Rally
on three occasions with TDI technology. With the Global Race Engine,
a clean-sweep of World Rally Championship titles went to Wolfsburg
at the frst attempt last year. We have now incorporated all our knowl-
edge in the development of the Formula 3 engine, and are excited to
see how it fares against its direct opposition and at the highest level.

Formula 3 History
Whether Michael Schumacher or Tom Kristensen Formula 3 is
a talent factory, churning out the motorsport stars of tomorrow.
Volkswagen can point to a successful record in the junior series. Since
Volkswagen returned to Formula 3 in 2007, drivers have been sweep-
ing up race wins and titles with Power engines. That is the case all over
the world whether in Europe, America or Asia. Many young rac-
ing drivers take their frst steps towards very big careers in this way.
Volkswagen has been supporting this route to the top since 1966,
when it launched its commitment to single-seater racing. Formula V
produced future Formula One World Champions like Niki Lauda,
Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg. This tradition was maintained when
the Formula 3 programme began with the German championship
in 1979. In Germany alone, Volkswagen drivers won 92 races and
seven titles up to 1994.
At the end of 2007, Volkswagen made its Formula 3 comeback in the
Euro Series, and the company did not have to wait long for success
to return. The frst race wins came in 2008, with current DTM driver
Edoardo Mortara claiming the frst title two years later. However, a
host of Volkswagen drivers also tasted success on the international
scene. To date, they have won over 50 titles. Among those who have
won the British Formula 3 Championship, for example, are Johnny
Herbert (1987) and David Brabham (1989), as well as present-day
Formula One drivers Daniel Ricciardo (2009) and Jean-Eric Vergne
(2010). Volkswagen has also won the last fve titles in a row.
Drivers racing for the Wolfsburg-based company have also made
their mark on the most important Formula 3 Grands Prix: between
John Nielsens success in 1984 and Michael Schumachers triumph in
1990, Volkswagen engines have been responsible for fve victories
and two FIA Formula 3 World Cup titles on the Macau street circuit.
In 2009 and 2010, Volkswagen driver Edoardo Mortara became
the frst driver ever to win two years in a row in Macau in the unof-
cial Formula 3 world championship. In 2012, Flix Antonio da Costa
triumphed at the same track with a Volkswagen engine. The engines
from Wolfsburg also captured four Formula 3 wins in Monaco, includ-
ing those by Laurent Aiello (1990) and Jrg Mller (1991). In 2011,
Marco Wittmann became the frst Volkswagen driver to win the iconic
Grand Prix in Pau.

76 76
FIA Formula 3 European Championship Championship
The return of the Formula 3 European Championship in 2012, after
an absence of 27 years, was a huge success for Volkswagen too.
The prodigious young talent Carlos Sainz Junior powered by
Volkswagen was among the winners and was a key fgure in the
title race. In 2013, the Formula 3 Euro Series rose to become the most
important international racing series for juniors. The motivation for
the drivers is immense. After all, the champion will, like last year, be
rewarded with a Formula One test at Ferrari at the end of the season.
In Carlin, Jagonya Ayam with Carlin, and Van Amersfoort Racing,
three teams with a total nine young drivers are placing their faith in
Formula 3 engines from Wolfsburg in 2014. Among the drivers: two
sons of former motorsport stars. Swedens Tom Blomqvist, son of 1984
World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, lines up for Jagonya Ayam with
Carlin. His team-mates are Sean Galael and Antonio Giovinazzi. The
second junior in the Volkswagen contingent is making his motor rac-
ing debut: Dutchman Max Verstappen, son of ex-Formula One driver
Jos Verstappen, starts for Van Amersfoort Racing. His two team-mates:
Jules Szymkowiak and Gustavo Menezes. Jordan King, 2013 British
Formula 3 Champion with Volkswagen, Ed Jones and Jake Dennis are
behind the wheel for the Carlin team.
The diversifed calendar consists of eleven race weekends this
season, rather than last years ten. Of these, eight will be held at
Formula One circuits. Silverstone, Pau, the Hungaroring, Spa-Fran-
corchamps, the Red Bull Ring, and the Nrburgring each host one
round of the series, while Hockenheim stages two events, including
the season fnale in October. The calendar also includes a tradi-
tional street circuit, in the form of the Norisring, and the frst ever
race on Russian soil at the Moscow Raceway. Each round features
three races, meaning the champion will be determined over the
course of 33 races.
Seven weekends on the DTM programme
On seven of the race weekends, the European Championship will
share the bill with the DTM. It will also feature on the support pro-
gramme at one event in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC)
and the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Another highlight for
the Formula 3 drivers, away from the European Championship pro-
77 77
FIA Formula 3 European Championship Championship
gramme, is traditionally the race through the streets of Macau, which
this year takes place from 14 to 17 November.
Each race weekend in the Formula 3 European Championship lasts
three days. On the Friday, two qualifying sessions determine the start-
ing positions for the three races. The fastest lap time of each driver
in the frst qualifying session decides the starting positions for the
opening race, while the starting grid for race two is determined by the
second-fastest lap times. The fastest times in qualifying two form the
basis for the starting positions for the third race.
Three 100-kilometre races
Each race is held over a distance of 100 kilometres, or a maximum
duration of 35 minutes. The points are awarded to the top ten, accord-
ing to the same system as is used in Formula One: 25-18-15-12-
10-8-6-4-2-1. Since 2013 the cars have had to weigh at least 550
kilograms before the Hancock tyres are ftted. The number of tyres per
driver is limited: they can use one set of used and two sets of new tyres
in free practice. The drivers have access to three sets of new tyres for
qualifying and the race. The number of wet tyres is limited to three sets
per race weekend.
Comeback after 27 years
After a long break with just the national Formula 3 championships in
Germany, Great Britain and Japan, the International Automobile Fed-
eration FIA launched the Formula 3 International Trophy in 2011. The
following year, the European Championship returned as an ofcial
series after an absence of 27 years. It was a successful comeback,
which produced high-class racing. Carlos Sainz Junior, powered by a
Volkswagen engine, was in contention for the title, which was eventu-
ally won by Daniel Juncadella.
In 2013 the European Championship replaced the Formula 3 Euro
Series. With races in eight diferent countries in 2014, it is now the
most important Formula 3 series in the world.

80
British Formula 3 Championship Championship
The British Formula 3 Championship is one of the most important jun-
ior series in the world and the most iconic. For over 60 years it has
been a talent factory, churning out future Formula One world cham-
pions. Ayrton Senna is just one of the legends who appeared in this
series towards the start of their careers. To date, 13 drivers have gone
on from British Formula 3 to amass a total of 22 Formula One World
Championship titles a record that speaks for itself.
In 2009, Volkswagen returned to the British Formula 3 Champion-
ship as an engine supplier. Since then, every title has gone to a driver
powered by Volkswagen. In 2009, Daniel Ricciardo put together an
impressive winning run to be crowned champion. One year later, it
was the turn of Jean-Eric Vergne to lift the trophy. Nowadays, they
both drive in Formula One, the pinnacle of motorsport. In 2011, Bra-
zilian Felipe Nasr completed a hat-trick of titles for the engine supplier
from Wolfsburg. In 2012, Jack Harvey made it four titles in a row for
Volkswagen. Last year, the king of the British Formula 3 Championship
was Jordan King, who claimed Volkswagens ffth triumph.
Just one race outside of Great Britain
The format of race weekends was modifed for the 2013 season. Each
event will consist of three races with a standard length of 30 minutes.
The starting grid for races one and three are determined during a half-
hour qualifying session. The drivers second-fastest qualifying times
are used to decide the starting positions for race one, while the fastest
times form the basis for the third race. The grid positions for the second
race arise from the result of race one. A draw takes place to decide
whether the top eight, nine or ten drivers from the frst race are to start
in reverse order.
The top ten drivers are awarded championship points after each indi-
vidual race. However, this system has also been altered ahead of the
2013 season. In races one and three, the same format will be used as
in Formula One: 251815121086421. For the second race,
in which the drivers start in reverse order, the format will be 1298
6543210.5.
The 2014 season consists of eight races, of which just one is staged
outside of Great Britain: at the famous Spa-Francorchamps circuit in
81 81

the Ardennes, Belgium. The season-opener and fnale will take place
at the Donington Park Circuit. The remaining venues in the United King-
dom are Rockingham, Silverstone, Snetterton, Thruxton and Brands
Hatch.
Where Stewart, Senna and Co. learned to drive
The long tradition of the British Formula 3 Championship stretches
back to 1951, making it the oldest Formula 3 series in the world. Over
the six decades since it was launched, the series has proven to be a
true talent factory for international stars. No less than 13 subsequent
Formula One world champions learned the tools of their trade in the
championship, which is also known as the University of Motorsport.
Among them are Sir Jackie Stewart, Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi,
James Hunt, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Mika Hkkinen
and Jenson Button. British Formula 3 has also produced many Le Mans
winners and champions in other top-level championships. The long list
of former participants is like a who is who of motorsport. Almost all
the major motor racing stars started their careers in this series.
The British Formula 3 Championship remains a springboard to the top
of the sport. Seven of the current crop of Formula One drivers earned
their spurs here: Button, Kevin Magnussen, Sergio Perez, Daniel Ric-
ciardo, Jean-Eric Vergne, Max Chilton and Markus Ericson. Big names
in motorsport also have a tradition in the British Formula 3 Champion-
ship: for example, Sam Brabham grandson of former three-time For-
mula One World Champion Sir Jack Brabham was involved in testing
for Carlin ahead of this season, giving him a valuable frst taste of the
junior series. In order to ensure the young drivers receive the best pos-
sible preparation for higher-level series, British Formula 3 has regu-
larly updated its regulations. Among the modifcations are the addition
of pit stops and mandatory tyre changes.

After two years with the Volkswagen Power Engine with Push-to-pass
technology, the teams in the ATS Formula 3 Cup the premier league
of junior single-seater series will run Formula 3 engines provided
by various manufacturers in 2014. Those engines used up until 2013
in the F3 European Championship are now permitted. As well as Van
Amersfoort Racing, the ADM Motorsport, Amkon Motorsport, Lotus,
and JBR Motorsport & Engineering teams will all use engines from
Wolfsburg in the ATS Formula 3 Cup.
Eight race weekends, with a trip abroad
The fact that the series now features eight race weekends, including
a trip to the Red Bull Ring in Austria, which will host a Formula One
Grand Prix again this year, is evidence of the increasing importance
of the series thanks in no small part to Volkswagen. The Lausitzring
and the Hockenheimring both host two rounds. The fnale is scheduled
for the start of October in Hockenheim, in the German state of Baden
Wrttemberg. The remaining venues are Oschersleben, the Nrbur-
gring and the Sachsenring. The ATS Formula 3 Cup will, like last year,
feature on the same bill as the ADAC GT Masters at six events. The
races will also feature on the programme at one DTM weekend.

ADAC Formula Masters:

ADAC Formula Masters Championship
This is where the stars of tomorrow take their frst steps in single-seater
racing: the ADAC Formula Masters is the ADACs Formula School.
The junior series, which has been powered by Volkswagen from the
word go, enters its seventh season in 2014. The ADAC Formula Mas-
ters ofers those making the step up from karting and talented young-
sters the opportunity to gain their frst experience out on the track and
to learn the tools required for a successful career in motorsport. The
series is aimed at youngsters aged 15 and above, and allows aford-
able motor racing in high-tech racing cars without compromising high
safety standards.
With Volkswagen, ADAC knows it has a reliable partner on board.
Equal opportunity and cost-efciency are the motto: all the key details
of the Formula ADAC powered by Volkswagen racing cars are iden-
tical. They have a Dallara monocoque and are powered by a 145-hp,
1.6-litre FSI Volkswagen engine. This allows the youngsters to learn
the fundamentals of car set-up and race operations in a high-perfor-
mance, reliable, safe and afordable car.
International line-up
The ADAC Formula Masters is an international success. The starting
feld consists of 19 drivers from Germany, Denmark, Sweden Austria,
Poland and Switzerland. They are hoping to showcase their talent in
the ADAC Formula Masters, and to use it as a springboard to a high-
er-level racing series, just as Daniel Abt, Pascal Wehrlein and Mar-
vin Kirchhfer have done. Abt is now driving in GP2 and Formula E,
Wehrlein in the DTM and Kirchhfer has made the step up to GP3
after winning the title in the ATS Formula 3 Cup.
Plenty of race practice at top circuits
The 2014 series will once again form part of the ADAC GT Masters
programme at eight events in Germany (Oschersleben, Lausitzring,
Nrburgring, Sachsenring, Hockenheim), Austria (Red Bull Ring), Slo-
vakia (Slovakia Ring), and the Netherlands (Zandvoort). 24 races will
be held this season; with three races per weekend, the talented juniors
will have plenty of opportunity to hone their skills.

ADAC Formula Masters Technology
Equal opportunity and cost efciency
Equal opportunity, cost efciency and safety: the standard Formula
ADAC racing cars, powered by Volkswagen, meet the strict interna-
tional FIA safety regulations in place for Formula 3 and at a total
price of just 49,900 Euros. The 145-hp, 1.6-litre FSI engines from
Volkswagen require no alterations and have a long life cycle the
standard power train can last the entire season.
The youngsters also beneft from Volkswagens expertise. The powerful,
reliable and efcient production engines are modifed and prepared
optimally for use on the racetrack. The 1.6-litre production engine
forms the basis for the power train. The racing version has a special
exhaust system with a racing catalytic converter and lambda sensor.
Components like the lubrication (dry sump instead of pressure feed),
inlet manifold and engine electronics have been modifed to meet the
demands of motorsport.
All the important technical details are identical. The teams are only
given free rein when it comes to confguring the rear wing, chassis
and tyre pressure. This way, the talented youngsters learn the basics of
set-up work and can showcase their driving ability thanks to the equal
opportunities guaranteed by the identical technology.

FIA World Rallycross Championship and Global Rallycross
Rallycross is attracting more and more attention in Europe and over-
seas, and is now one of the fastest growing motorsports in the world,
said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito. The races are short
and action-packed, while the cars are spectacular and look similar
to production models. The demanding Rallycross circuits consist of
a combination of dirt and asphalt sections, while the changes in ele-
vation ensure spectators are treated to spectacular jumps of over
20metres.
As of the 2014 season, Volkswagen Motorsport has entered into
an exclusive three-year partnership with Swedish rallycross team
Marklund Motorsport in the World Rallycross Championship. In secur-
ing the services of reigning Global Rallycross champion Toomas Topi
Heikkinen as its number one driver, Marklund Motorsport has emphat-
ically underlined its ambitions for the World Rallycross Championship.
As well as the Finn, Swedens Anton Marklund will also line up in the
new Marklund Motorsport Volkswagen Polo RX Supercar.
Beetle goes America is the story in Global Rallycross. This summer,
the Volkswagen Beetle will be out to conquer US motorsport. For this
project, Volkswagen of America has joined forces with US racing spe-
cialists Andretti Autosport to form the Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross
Team, which will run two Global Rallycross cars for drivers Tanner
Foust and former Formula One driver Scott Speed. The Rallycross Bee-
tle has four-wheel drive, with the TSI engine generating more than
560hp (412 kW) excitement and pure racing are guaranteed.
