Matching adjectives to their nouns

An adjective is a word that describes a noun. In French adjectives must agreewith their
nouns, which means that they have to show if they are masculine or feminine and singular
or plural to match the noun.
Invariable adjectives
Some adjectives are known as invariable, which means they don't change at all.
For marron and orange, you don't need to add anything to get the feminine and plural
forms, eg Je porte un pullover orange (I'm wearing an orange sweater); Elle a des lunettes
orange (She's got orange glasses).
Other adjectives like chic, extra, cool, super don't change either.
Regular and irregular adjectives
Some adjectives are regular and follow conventional rules depending on whether they are
masculine, feminine or singular. Some adjectives have different rules - they are
called irregular.
Regular or irregular?
When you look up an adjective in the dictionary, you always see it in themasculine
singular form, eg petit.
If it is regular all you need to do is:
 add -e to the end to get the feminine singular form, eg petite
 add -s for the masculine plural form, eg petits
 add -es for the feminine plural form, eg petites
Follow these simple rules for all regular adjectives that end in -u, -i, -éin the
masculine singular form.
