B.Tech IV Year I Semester Examinations, December-2011

POWER SYSTEM OPERATION AND CONTROL

(ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING)

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80

Answer any five questions

All questions carry equal marks

---

1.a) Define the following:

i) Heat rate curve, ii) Cost curve,

iii) Incremental fuel cost and iv) Input-output characteristics.

b) The fuel cost of two units are given by:

Rs/hr 1 25 1 . 0

1

2

1 1

+ + =

G G

P P C

Rs/hr 2 38 2 . 0

2

If the total demand on the generators is 300MW, find the economic load

scheduling of the two units. [16]

2.a) Explain the penalty factor.

b) Derive the general expressions for transmission loss coefficients and mention any

assumptions are made. [16]

3.a) Explain the short term Hydro-thermal scheduling problem with necessary

expressions.

b) Discuss the optimal power flow with inequality constraints. [16]

4.a) What are the reasons for limit on the system frequency variations.

b) Two generating stations A and B have full load capacities of 200 MW and 75 MW

respectively. The inter connector connecting the two stations has an induction

motor/ synchronous generator (plant C) of full load capacity 25 MW. Percentage

changes of speeds of A, B and C are 5, 4 and 3 respectively. The loads on bus bars

A and B are 75MW and 30 MW respectively. Determine the load taken by the set

C and indicate the direction in which the energy is flowing. [16]

5.a) Draw the block diagram of load frequency control and economic load dispatch.

Explain its combined operation.

b) Prove that steady state response is zero for isolated power system with PI control.

[16]

6. Explain how the control scheme results in zero tie-line power deviations and zero

frequency deviations under steady state conditions, following a step load change

in one of the area system with neat block diagram. [16]

7.a) Compare the different types of compensating equipment for transmission systems.

b) What are the specifications of load compensation? [8+8]

8. Write short notes on the following:

a) Optimal parameter adjustment

b) Compensated transmission lines

c) Hydro electric power plant model. [16]
