From Our Heart

Each year we honor our graduating students with a Senior Recognition Weekend. They participate in a Robing Ceremony where they
get to step out of the spotlight and honor someone else who helped get them to this point spiritually. Some choose a parent, Sunday
School teacher, a coach, but all who are chosen have made a signicant impact on their spiritual life. We also give them a framed
copy of something I have had taped in my Bible since I was in High School, as a challenge and a reminder of the God who has
redeemed them and wants them to be as much like Jesus as possible. This was found tacked to the door of an African pastor who
was martyred for his faith. The culture that these Seniors will be leading in the immediate future might just demand a similar price.
For His Glory!

My Commitment as a Christian
Im a part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has
been made. Im a disciple of His. I wont look back, let up, slow down, back away or be still.

My past is redeemed. My present makes sense. My future is secure. Im nished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning,
smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living, and dwarfed goals.

I no longer need pre-eminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudits, or popularity. I dont have to be right, rst, tops, recognized, praised,
regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power.

My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way rough, my companions few, my guide reliable, my mission clear. I
cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed. I will not inch in the face of sacrice, hesitate in
the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder in the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity.

I wont give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of
Jesus. I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till all know, and work till he stops me, and when He comes for His own, He will have
no problem recognizing memy banner will be clear.

10 THINGS KIDS LEARN
FROM THEIR PARENTS
MARRIAGE

Not long ago, I was asked if I
intentionally taught my kids about
marriage. My answer was yes and
no.#
Yes, there are times when weve
talked specically about marriage
(either ours or ones that our kids
have observed). But for the most
part, Cathy and I have been wise
enough to know that our kids are
constantly watching and learning
from us. Our actions (both good
and bad) are always teaching them
about marriage.#
I would be thrilled if my kids had a
similar type of marriage that Cathy
and I share. Like everyone else, we
dont have a perfect marriage. But
were both very proud of what
weve developed over the years.#
Here are 10 things that I know my
kids have observed from our
marriage over the years:#
1. A!ection: Cathy & I are very
a$ectionate and I like having my
kids see me holding their moms
hand, hugging, kissing,
cuddling, etc., as often as I can.#


2. Saying, Im sorry: I want to
be quick to use this phrase and
I want my kids to hear me say it
(and I have to say it a lot more
than Cathy).#
3. A"rmation: this is my primary
love language so its easy for me
to dish out encouraging words.
My kids get a lot of verbal
a%rmation, but they also hear
me directing it toward my wife
(which is really easy).#
4. Attraction: I think Cathy is
hot and, I make it known
around our family. Ill regularly
say, Isnt your mom beautiful?#
5. Time: Our kids know that we
like to spend time together.
When they see us steal time
away to sit in the backyard and
talk, or go in the hot tub, or go
on a date night, or sneak away
for the weekend its exactly
the message I want to send
them.#
6. Laughter: We laugh a lot in our
house and my wifes sense of
humor cracks me up. I like
having my kids see that my wife
makes me laugh.#
7. Respect: As often as I can, I try
to show Cathy simple signs of
respect, like opening the door
for her, saying thank you, and
please.#


8. Faith conversations: We dont
always pray in front of our kids,
but they hear and see our faith
conversations and know that
were always talking about
Jesus and what it means to be a
follower.#
9. The value of friends: Our house
is well worn from the tra%c of
friends in and out of our house.
We love having people over and
the Fields house is a regular
hangout for some incredible
friends.#
10.Servanthood: I know my kids
have had a better example in
Cathy than with me because
shes the ultimate servant. She
is always asking, How can I
help? What do you need to
make life better? Serving one
another is seen in the daily, little
things and there are many
opportunities to serve.#
Kids are always watching their
parents marriage and yet too many
marriages underestimate the power
of modeling! Children are taking
daily recordings of what a marriage
looks like and those recordings are
denitely inuencing and shaping
their view of marriage. So, live your
marriage wisely to make sure the
message you are sending your kids
is the message you intend to send.#

It seems that whether the issue is drugs,
alcohol, bullying, risky driving, media
consumption, or sex, studies show that
parents consistently underestimate their
own kids interest or participation in
these behaviors. As it has been said,
denial is not just a river in Egypt. What
drives this type of parental denial, the
Not My Kid Syndrome (NMK), held by
so many? There are several primary
factors at play:#
1. Some parents have a hard time
moving past viewing their kids as
innocent children. Parents invest
years in protecting their kids,
controlling and monitoring activities,
and trying to instill values. They
want to believe that theyve done a
good job at parenting and many
have! They have a hard time coming
to terms with their kids leaving
childhood behind and starting to
experience new levels of adult-like
engagement with the world.#
2. Kids mature di$erently. Because
there is no normal when it comes to
adolescent development; no xed
template that all kids follow on the
pathway to adulthood, parents
arent always aware of when
adolescent changes are taking
place. The development process,
unique to each adolescent, can
make it easier for parents to believe
that their kid isnt there yet when it
comes to typical adolescent
interests and behaviors.#
3. Not all kids engage in at-risk
behaviors. The simple fact is that
not every teen has sex, drinks
alcohol, takes drugs, views porn,
drives like a maniac, and texts 100
times a day. These facts make it
easy for parents to make a simple
assumption that their kids are in the
NMK category, whether they are
or not. But in reality, while not all
kids engage in at-risk behaviors, all
kids think about them and are
susceptible to temptations and peer
pressure.#
4. Parents are uncomfortable talking
about tough issues. Most parent
dont relish discussions with their
teenagers on tough issues like
dealing with peer pressure,
sexuality, or drugs and alcohol. The
hesitance to talk about these topics
make it easier for parents to
rationalize that their kids arent
ready or interested in these issues.#
Rather than being a NMK parent, the
wise course of action is to prepare kids
for the process of adolescence and the
pressures, challenges, and temptations
that accompany it. Talking to kids about
these issues in an atmosphere of
acceptance and openness will help kids
face challenges when they arise. But
parents who live this season of life with
a Not My Kid attitude actually put their
kids at greater risk of being hurt along
the way. Its far better for parents to live
with a preventative Why Not My Kid?
point of view.#
