Sample Questions- Techie 50 test

Data Interpretation
This section will have a business case with data. You will be asked few questions about the case and
you need to do some analysis to provide the answer. These questions will require you to do quick
calculations and apply yourself.
Sample case:
You are a Sunstone Techie50 student and have been offered an internship by a fast food company
named ABC food. This company sells few products such as burgers, shakes, French fries, ice cream.
You have been given price and gross margin data for all products and unit sales data for a specific
day. Based on this data, you have to answer some questions important to make business decisions.
Price and Gross Margin data for all products
(All number in Rs)
Price/unit Cost/unit Gross Profit/unit
Veg Burgers 80 55 25
Chicken Burgers 90 70 20
Milk Shakes 60 38 22
French Fries 35 15 20
Hot Coffee 30 10 20

Daily sales data for all products
(all data in unit sold)

8-10AM 10-12noon 12-2PM 2-4PM 4-6PM 6-8PM 8-10PM
Veg Burgers 2 6 20 14 12 15 15
Chicken Burgers 1 4 20 15 9 20 15
Milk Shakes 2 4 15 12 9 8 5
French Fries 12 25 20 20 18 16 20
Hot Coffee 35 15 2 2 10 5 4
*assume this is data on an average day
Answer following questions based on this data:
Q1. For ABC food, gross profit collected during the day is the most important metric. Considering
this, which among the five was the best product for ABC for this day? _______________
Answer: French Fries
For this, we need to calculate sum of unit sold for all products and then multiply it by Gross
Profit/unit. It will provide you the profit generated from each product. Here are the results:

Total Units
Sold
Gross Profit/unit
(Rs)
Gross Profit/day
(Rs)
Veg Burgers 84 25 2,100
Chicken Burgers 84 20 1,680
Milk Shakes 55 22 1,210
French Fries 131 20 2,620
Hot Coffee 73 20 1,460

Q2. Similarly, which is the worst product for this day?____________________
Answer: Milk Shakes
See the calculation above.
Q3. ABC food is focusing on increasing the profits from French Fries during 4PM-8PM. One of the
ideas is to give Rs 5 of discount on French Fries per unit during this time. Management expects that
this discount can help increase the unit sales between 4PM-8PM to 42 units. Assuming
managements expectation is right, do you think providing this discount between 4PM-8PM is a
good idea? Yes or No. Why?
______________________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________________
Answer: NO
At present, French Fries gross profit per unit is Rs 20. Sales between 4-8PM is 34(18+16). Hence the
profit generated is Rs 680. Rs 5 of discount will decrease the gross profit to Rs 15/unit. So, you need
to sell 680/15 = 45.3 units to get same profit. 42 is less than 45 so ABC will make less profit than
before and hence, you should not do it.
Q4. Staff of ABC Food work in shifts. Management team believes that they should move some staff
from low volume slots to high volume (busy) slots. If you can move staff from one specific slot to
another specific slot, what will you do? Check one option to select Move from and another to select
Move to.
Move from Move to
8-10AM 8-10AM
10-12noon 10-12noon
2-4PM 2-4PM
8-10PM 8-10PM
Answer: Move From (8-10AM)-> Move to (12-2PM)
You need to calculate lowest sales volume. Total units sold or total profit generated can be a good
metric. You need to move staff from lowest sales/profits to highest sales/profits. If you calculate it
for different time periods, you will see that 8-10AM is lowest and 12-2PM is the highest.
Q5. Government recently added an extra tax of 12.5% on the sales price for burgers. So, for every
veg burger, ABC Food needs to pay 12.5% of the Rs 80 price to government. Hence, their gross profit
per unit will decrease. How many additional veg burgers ABC will be required to sell per day to
maintain same profit?_____________________________
Answer: 56
12.5% of 80 is 80x0.125 = 10. It means that gross profit for veg burgers will decrease by 10 (from Rs
25 to 15). So, total units sold for veg burgers are 84 for the day. The profit generated by veg burgers
is 84x25 = Rs 2,100. Since profit per unit is decreased to Rs 15, the unit required to be sold to
generate Rs2,100 of profit are 2100/15 = 140. So additional veg burgers required = 56 (140-84)

Analytical Reasoning
This section will have numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning, logical deduction etc. Some samples
questions and solutions are:

Answer: B
The simplest triangles are AHB, GHI, BJC, GFE, GIE, IJE, CEJ and CDE i.e. 8 in number.
The triangles composed of two components each are HEG, BEC, HBE, JGE and ICE i.e. 5 in number.
The triangles composed of three components each are FHE, GCE and BED i.e. 3 in number.
There is only one triangle i.e. AGC composed of four components.
There is only one triangle i.e. AFD composed of nine components.
Thus, there are 8 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 18 triangles in the given figure.

Answer: C
We shall join the centres of all the circles by horizontal and vertical lines and then
label the resulting figure as shown.
The simplest squares are ABED, BCFE, DEHG, EFIH, GHKJ and HILK i.e. 6 in number.
The squares composed of four simple squares are ACIG and DFLJ i.e. 2 in number.
Thus, 6 + 2 = 8 squares will be formed.

Answer: D (This is an alternating division and addition series: First, divide by 2, and then add 8)

Answer: E
This is clearly the best answer because the paragraph directly states that warm weather affects
consumers inclination to spend. It furthers states that the sales of single-family homes was at an
all-time high. There is no support for choice a or c. Choice b is wrong because even though there
were high sales for a particular February, this does not mean that sales are not higher in other
months. Choice d presents a misleading figure of 4 million. The paragraph states that the record of
4.75 million was at an annual, not a monthly, rate.
