What Is Leadership?
Leaders are recognized in sports, schools and businesses every day. Not all of these leaders are managers. Some are members of management, but others are employees who lead through example for coworkers. It does not take a specific title to be a leader. Instead, there are skills leaders have that make others want to perform at a high level when either working with them or for them. Leaders improve the performance of everyone around them.
Leadership of a team can be the difference between success and failure. Leadership is the process of determining goals for the team and finding a way for the team to meet those goals. Leadership involves finding ways to motivate team members or employees to reach their goals. Learning how to motivate for leader is not easy, as each employee or person on his team may have to be motivated in a different way. Finding out how to get each team member or employee to perform at her highest level is the job of a leader.
Leadership can be passive or aggressive. Showing good leadership involves reading people you are leading and finding what works with them. An "in-your-face" approach might get high performance from some members of the team, but it also can result in negative feedback from others. A laid-back leadership style can empower employees who work for you, but it can also result in an atmosphere in which the team feels unmotivated. The wrong type of leadership for a team or employee can be more damaging than no leadership at all.
Solid leadership can help explain difficult tasks to an employee. Leadership should involve gaining confidence of your employees and teammates. This can be done by demonstrating your level of knowledge. This avoids having to deal with feedback from employees stating that "you just don't know what this job is like." By showing you understand the challenges and offering solutions to solve them from your own experience in the job, you can gain a level of respect from your employees. If your employees respect you, they will be more likely to follow your directions.
The old philosophy "leaders are born, not made" is incorrect. Leadership skills can be learned. It takes a combination of studying different leadership philosophies and practicing them. Leaders learn skills as they progress through their career. Take notes of at least one positive trait you admire in each boss or supervisor you have during your career. Write down these attributes that you admire, and practice them even if your job is not a supervisory role. Supervisors are not the only ones who demonstrate leadership. Employees can show leadership in how they do their job every day and interact with their coworkers.
Learning successful skills as a leader is possible from books. One of the books that is very popular among managers is the "ABC's of Leadership: 26 Characteristics of More Effective Leadership," by David M. Hall. This book gives skills for new managers and experienced managers as well for leading their teams. Learning is also possible from courses, and the American Management Association has some very good leadership classes for employees and managers. The managerial classes range from beginning management classes to classes for managers with years of experience wanting to fine-tune their skills.
How to Be a Leader
If you would like to take on more of a leadership role in your job or in life in general, it is a straightforward process that can be accomplished. Step 1 The way to be a leader or take a leadership role can be stated in one sentence: Take Action! Step 2 Instead of waiting around for someone else to take action and then following them, YOU take the action. But you must first have a plan. It will not benefit you or anyone else to blindly move forward and take haphazard actions. Step 3 Here is an example of a leader versus a follower: If you are with a group and it is nearly time for dinner, the leader will speak up and suggest a restaurant or a plan for dinner. The followers will likely go along with the first suggestion. The followers may offer some other suggestions but often the leader's first suggestion is used.
Step 4 A good leader takes into account the needs, feelings and desires of the group. So you want to be assertive and state your plan or idea, but not at the expense of damaging relationships with the group around you. Step 5 Always have a plan for what you want to do next, and then you won't be swayed or just drifting along with the current of others. About Leadership Principles in the Bible
The Bible is filled with multiple references to leadership and what it takes to be a good leader. The Bible talks about the effects of good leadership as well as the results of poor leadership. Leaders are responsible for how well they do their jobs and are accountable to God for leading their people astray.
Leadership principles are mentioned throughout the Bible. Leaders were needed from the very beginning, when Moses led God's people out of Egypt through the desert for 40 years and then to the Promised Land. The responsibility of leadership was too great for Moses to handle himself, so he chose leaders to whom he could delegate the lesser tasks (Exodus 18:13-27). See Resources below for more information.
The Bible defines many good qualities for leaders. In Exodus 18, Moses' father-in-law tells Moses to "select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain" for leadership positions (Exodus 18:21). Moses chose "wise and respected men" to serve as leaders (Deuteronomy 1:15). Being "very capable" is very important for being a leader (1 Chronicles 26:6). Good leaders also "judge fairly" and "do not show partiality in judging" (Deuteronomy 1:16-17).
Those in leadership positions bear a heavy burden. They are to serve as examples to those who they are leading by living in faith and by modeling a way of life that they want the people to exhibit (Hebrews 13:7). Leaders are often privy to information that the masses do not know, so leaders must determine what to share, what not to share, and how best to direct others who do not have access to the whole picture (Galatians 2:2).
Leaders have the power to lead people in the wrong direction (1 Kings 16:2), and God holds those in leadership positions responsible when they lead His people the wrong way. (Isaiah 3:14) The Bible is filled with warnings to leaders who lead God's people astray (Leviticus 4:22). God promises to punish leaders for doing a bad job in leading God's people (Jeremiah 25:34), particularly when they lead God's people into a sinful lifestyle (Zechariah 10:3).
God calls certain people into leadership positions (1 Samuel 9:16). In fact, leadership is one of the many roles that is necessary for the Body of Christ to function well (Romans 12:4-8). God expects His people to obey and submit to the authority of the leaders that God has put into place (Hebrews 13:17). God wants leadership to be joy, not a burden (Hebrews 13:17). The best leaders lead willingly and give "freely and wholeheartedly to the Lord," which results in rejoicing by the people who are being led (1 Chronicles 29:9).
How to Be an Effective Leader
Are you a leader? What skills and talents are required to be an effective leader? Often individuals are thrust into a situation which requires change, forward progress, accountability, and tangible outcomes, but they find themselves swimming in paralysis because they can't seem to make necessary changes. Effective leadership skills are necessary to propel an agency, company, or group of people toward a common goal. It is not easy, but with a handful of specific tools, it can be done! "A great leader doesn't look for followers, they look for other leaders". This is a quote from an unknown author which holds a vast amount of wisdom and insight. Why would a great leader look for other leaders in order to accomplish a goal? Well, you would think that answer would be a no-brainer, but often we see leaders hire individual who need regular prompting, a lot of oversight, and are great "yes ma'am and yes sir" people. In some respects, this type of personality is nice because it offers the leader a sense of loyalty, however, it is an unproductive relationship and one that is less than effective if forward progress is the goal. So what are the principles of a great leader? Do you have them? Step 1
Vision: The leader must have the ability to see how each area/department can work together for the interests of the company. Departments and staff should not work in a vacuum and they, whether they are different or not, should not work completely independent of one another. If departments work for the same company, what affects one will affect another-all of which will affect the company. An effective leader will see the vision of the company and be able to bring the departments together in a way that create functioning systems all geared toward the ultimate goal of the organization. Step 2
Commitment: The leader cannot be faint of heart. If systemic change is necessary, it will likely be chaotic for a while and staff may be somewhat resistant to the change (particularly if it is different than what they are familiar with). Once a vision and ultimate goal is established, the leader must be willing to accept chaos for a while and trust that the outcome can be accomplished on the heels of the upheaval. It is during this difficult time that leaders typically give in and change the course of the ship because they lost their commitment in the sea of natural chaos. Hang in there and let staff know that chaos is only a temporary state until things get ironed out. Just be aware that issues will only be ironed out if the leader is committed to the process and continues to propel the staff/organization in the direction that they have established. Step 3
Transparency: The leader must be transparent with staff in all dealings. It is critical that the staff know what the vision of the agency/company is, and it is also critical for the staff to know why the company is headed in a particular direction. If the answer is negative (i.e. compliance issues, funding/revenue issues) this information is important for them to know. If staff understand the issues of the company it will be easier for them to help keep the momentum going in the right direction. If this critical information is withheld from them, they might want to try to help, but they will be blind in their efforts to assist. It is also of utmost importance that the leader communicate progress with staff on a regular basis. Reaching critical milestones is an enormous reinforcement to all involved and will serve as natural positive and healthy momentum in reaching the ultimate goal toward the vision of the company. Finally, with regards to transparency, the leader must be willing to recognize staff for their ideas and contributions along the way. This "public" recognition will empower staff and provide credit where credit is due. When staff feel empowered and a part of the process of change, they will likely find themselves invested in the new direction and ultimately become highly instrumental in helping the company reach its intended targets. Doing this requires the leader to have sufficient self-confidence. Many leaders are threatened by their subordinates, and will stifle their talents as a result. Step 4
Consistency: Leaders must ensure that they are consistent with staff and that they manage situations according to policy. Staff are aware of inconsistencies and they don't appreciate them especially when they are on the "losing end" of one. Make sure policies are well thought out and applied across the board. If staff see that policies are applied and enforced fairly and consistently, they will respect the boundaries set forth through the policy and whatever issue that prompted the policy in the first place will become less and less problematic. Step 5
Insight: The leader must have a certain level of insight and do their best to align company needs with the talents and skills of the staff. When people are engaged in areas that they possess talents, and are supported and encouraged to use those talents, the company can and will see tremendous progress. If the company insists on keeping someone in a position (because they have always done that) but the position really does not tap into that persons true skills/talents, then it can create a no-win situation for everyone, including the company. Avoid this trap, use insight and realign duties if possible.
How to Be an Effective Leader Among Leaders
Leadership can be hard sometimes. Quite often it takes a greater toll on you when you are tasked to lead leaders. Great leaders are not born they are made. To lead effectively follow these helpful tips. Step 1 Be Yourself. First and foremost you can not emulate or be someone you are not. Your style is your style and your personality is your personality so you must be who you are first and foremost. Step 2 Put The Mission First. Whatever the mission is, whatever the goal is make it plain for both you and the leaders who are following you to understand that goal. Lay out the objectives. Get buy in from your group that you are leading and make the goals or the mission your priority and everyone should understand this. Step 3 Lead Where You Want The Group To Go. You can not lead where you will not go. Your commitment to achieving the goals of the group and
accomplishing the mission only happens if you take the lead and go where you want the team to go. You have to not just be willing but you must do what you expect the team to do. Step 4 Actively Listen While Maintaining Control. Solicit the opinion of the group. Tailor your questions in a way to get participation yet maintain the control of the group. When you are leading "leaders" many of them want to be in control. You have to maintain your control while listening to their opinions. Implement those opinions that will help achieve your goals. Step 5 Delegate Responsibility, Accountability and Authority. Leaders like responsibility and authority. Many lack accountability. So when you delegate responsibility and authority do it before the group and make leaders accountable. This helps get buy in and shared responsibility. Also you will know the 20% who are willing to actually work. Step 6 Motivate and Inspire Your Team. In sports you hear quite often that the coaches or managers should not have to motivate professional players. That is true in theory but it is not reality. Everyone needs to stay motivated in doing there jobs or following through with their commitment. Money is not the only factor to motivate people. Like a coach you must keep your team of leaders motivated to accomplish the mission. Though you are leading leaders this can sometimes be harder than leading followers. You must turn Indian chiefs into Indians to accomplish your goals and mission. To do so do not coddle them but you must keep them motivated and excited about the mission.

Students learn most effectively when they are engaged. Teachers are the authority figure in the classroom, but they must gain the interest of students by not speaking down to them. By making a student, regardless of age, feel as if his opinion is important, you will make him want to contribute, grow and improve. Leadership is the ability to inspire and direct people successfully in various activities. Successful management of major corporations and large non-profits often depends on great leadership. We know leaders when we encounter them. But what is leadership? And how does one become a leader? Review the steps below required to develop leadership qualities and to be successful in the management of other people. Step 1 Learn What Leadership Is. There are a number of competing theories of leadership. But leadership traits seem to be centered around drive, character, intelligence and self-confidence. Of these, character (honesty, integrity, moral virtue) is the most critical. You can actually work on and improve all four critical traits, despite the belief of many that intelligence is a genetic trait. Young children especially can be shaped by learning and adult example. Step 2 Cultivate Intellectual Qualities That Leadership Requires. Children especially need intellectual stimulation (not pressure) from the time they are toddlers to develop the intellectual curiosity and keen intelligence that leaders need to be successful. The core skills that make up intelligence and intellectual curiosity include verbal abilities, math literacy (“numeracy”), a love of reading and learning, and emotional intelligence. As parents, teachers, coaches and mentors we need to learn how to motivate the behaviors that produce these qualities and be positive role models for others. Step 3 Cultivate the Motivation to Achieve. Children and adults need praise for things done well and constructive criticism for tasks done poorly. They both need to learn how to behave well and work toward excellence whether in a group or alone. We need to teach children (and many adults) how to do tasks well and how to cooperate with others. Over time, achievement will be less dependent on external rewards and should become internally motivated. Step 4 Develop Character. We need to help others, particularly children, develop good character, not only because it will make them happy, but because it is the most powerful characteristic of successful leadership. A leader is only credible to the extent that he or she is honest, objective, and trustworthy. Help others develop character by teaching and modeling what the ancient Greeks called the moral virtues, which
are excellences of human character. Teach others about behavior that is just, temperate, courageous, and prudent. These qualities are displayed by great leaders. Who wants to follow someone who is unjust, intemperate, cowardly or rash, or imprudent? Step 5 Develop Self-Confidence. Help develop self-confidence in others by encouraging them to undertake tasks and jobs for which they are well prepared and likely to be successful. Step 1 Have you ever heard someone say, “Actually, I have to admit that I think I have bad leadership skills. My co-workers all hate me and I’m incapable of doing my job”. The answer is no, of course. No one says this either because they don’t believe they have poor leadership skills, or because they don’t want to appear incompetent. Unfortunately research tells us that from the employees’ perspective, there are many managers out there who have poor leadership skills and communication skills. What should we take out of this dichotomy? Perhaps at the least, we could all admit to ourselves that there is room to improve our leadership skills and enhance our communication skills to increase our ability to be an effective leader. After all, it’s not the sort of skill that is easy to get 100% right all of the time. It might just be that we don’t specifically know what improvements to our leadership skills we need to make, so here’s 10 ways to start: Step 2 Get a reality check Finding out what others think of our leadership skills and our communication skills can be real eye-opener, and is often the most powerful driver for change. Using a 360 survey where you receive feedback from your staff, peers and manager, and family gives you some concrete information on a sometimes intangible subject. Use an existing tool (and there are some highly regarded ones out there) or else simply let your staff know that you are seeking feedback from them in order to improve your leadership skills. A word of caution though, your staff may not feel safe in giving feedback if they believe you are going to use it against them, or become defensive about what they say. It’s up to you to create a safe environment so they feel comfortable in being open and honest with you. Step 3
Don’t use the power of your position to get things done If people are questioning why certain things are done, or the logic of decisions, never pull rank in response. A critical component of effective leadership skills is getting the buy-in from your team and colleagues. You don’t get buy-in by telling them that the decision is the right one because you are the boss and you made it so your communication skills are extremely important. Your team may not always agree with what is being done, but they are more likely to respect you if you take the time to explain your rationale. Step 4 Don’t think of employees as things that need to be controlled or managed Instead, give them the latitude to take actions and make decisions. Trust is a vital component of leadership skills. If you can’t trust people to do their jobs well, then you either have the wrong people in the jobs, or you have the right people but you haven’t trained them sufficiently. Let them do what they are there to do, without leaning over their shoulders all the time, or demanding to know how they spend each minute of their time. Step 5 Listen, listen, listen If there are unhappy or disgruntled people in your business, you can guarantee that at some stage they’ve tried to tell you what the problem is. It’s likely you weren’t listening (or didn’t want to listen), or perhaps your initial reaction made the person think twice about bringing the problem to you. Truly listening is one of the greatest leadership skills to develop, regardless of your role. Good listeners are genuinely interested, convey empathy, and want to find out what’s behind the conversation. Great leaders have great communication skills –without exception. Step 6 Stop providing solutions Managers often achieve their positions after being technical specialists, and so will have an opinion or view on how to "fix" situations or problems. They believe that it's faster to tell someone what to do, or do it themselves, than give their employees an opportunity to figure it out. By always providing the answers, managers take away opportunity for their employees to learn and come up with alternative (and potentially better) ways of doing things. Step 7 Always be constructive – always Language and communication skills set great leaders apart from mediocre ones. Don't patronise or be critical of others - take complete responsibility for how you are heard. If you catch yourself about to make negative remarks, take a breath and rephrase your words to get your message across without the emotional attachment. One of the Great leaderships skills is to always find a way to say things calmly and constructively.
Step 8 Judge your success by the success of your team The true success of a leader can be measured by the success of the people that work for them. As a manager of others, your prime responsibility is to ensure the success and development of your team. If they are successful, you will automatically be successful. Focus on building their skills and removing obstacles in their way. If you can achieve this, you will see the results in the productivity, motivation and satisfaction of your employees. This in turn filters through to bottom-line results. Step 9 Don’t do things just because they will “look good”. Nothing is more transparent than managers who make decisions and behave in ways simply to look good to their superiors. If you want to improve your leadership skills, one of the qualities you need is integrity. The integrity to make decisions because they are right, and the integrity to stand up when you truly believe something is not in the best interests of the business. Whether or not it is in your personal best interests is much less of a consideration. Step 10 Include humour in your diet Nobody likes to work in an environment that is devoid of any fun. People are more productive when they are enjoying themselves. Creating a workplace where fun is permitted and encouraged can make a significant difference, and it’s even more effective when the boss participates. It increases team spirit, and encourages people to see you as a person, not simply as the boss. Step 11 Let people get to know the real you Being open about yourself helps to break down the barriers that hierarchy puts in place. When your employees know the person behind the façade, that’s when you start to build the foundations of good leadership - trust and respect.

You can be a great leader; just build your skills. Step 1 Develop a vision of greatness. What do your people want or need to accomplish? Where do you need to go together, some point to reach or accomplishment that people must stretch to attain. Some examples could be to win a game, reach a sales goal, write a book, start a business or a church. This vision must be challenging and attainable. It must be relevant to the reason the people are together. Your vision may be the mission of the group or a specific project you are trying to acomplish. Your vision peaks people's interest! Step 2 Communication! Develop an extraordinary sense of communication with your people. You must 'connect.' Leaders speak to their people in such a way that everyone understands; not an easy task. Telling people to do tasks is NOT the same as a developing rapport. Developing rapport means speaking so each listener understands and, then, DESIRES to accomplish the vision. You speak to the listener, but not be condescending. Improve your speaking and listening skills. Excellent communication greatly improves your ability to accomplish strategic objectives. Step 3 Be trustworthy. Probably the toughest leadership trait is to get people to trust you. It sounds easy to just be trustworthy. However, everyone wants to get what he/she 'deserves' out of the organization. When people percieve your personal intentions far outweigh their interests, you lose trust and leadership credibility. The next step explains some of the attributes that help you become trustworthy. Step 4 -Show that you are dedicated to the vision. Believe to the point that you sacrifice or will sacrifice as needed! -Dress the role of the leader. Maybe a suit, maybe coveralls and boots. Your appearance tells people whether or not you are working toward your vision. -Show that you care about your people. Ensure mail and paychecks are delivered. Ensure people take necessary breaks. Ensure people are trained to and understand your standards. -Show confidence in your people. Trust that your people will make good decisions. If you can't do this, conduct training/counseling to build your team's maturity. Usually, the team's maturity mirrors the leader's maturity. -Keep people informed. Develop several communication techniques, ie. face-to-face meetings, written notes, signage, e-mail, daily/weekly newsletters, bulletins, good policy manuals, procedure books, uniforms with a message/slogan. -Follow up, follow up, follow up. If you don't follow up, eventually, tasks don't get done. If you don't care enough to follow up and thank people for their work, you will not succeed and you are not a leader. -Reward people for their exemplary work. their peers! -Develop basic management skills. Management skills include planning, organizing, people/counseling skills, and control skills. Get any basic management book to learn more about these skills. Know who your best planners are (Planning). Likewise, who organizes people and equipment well (Organizing)? Who can train/counsel others (People/counseling)? Who can decide if the team is on the right track or is wasting resources (Control)? You must have a good understanding of each of these. However, if you can deligate some of these tasks to a group expert, you demostrate excellent leadership! -Be technically competent. Know your industry's details. Read trade magazines. Understand what is new and upcoming in your business. Constantly study and learn. Expect your people to do the same. -Display great integrity. Expect people to do as you do. -Have courage and encourage others. Take smart well-thought out risks rather than gamble. -Associate with other leaders. Be involved as a member of leadership associations. -Be proactive. Don't rest on past success. Build for the future. -Be effective and efficient. Use resources wisely. -Stay calm! Find a new way to do it. As the old saying goes, "there's more than one way to skin a cat" (no offense intended to cat lovers here). If at first you don't succeed, try try again. Step 5 Praise and criticize constructively. This is your team, if someone makes you mad or messes up, find a positive way to tell them so. Take them aside, keep it private and get through the situation with minimal stress. Praise in front of everyone. It is always good for others to see and hear you praise those who deserve it. This will go far to keep the momentum going. Step 6 Know what each person is good at. Assign tasks accordingly. If one person is great at planning but not as good at completing a task, divide it up between several of your employees. A leader is a stronger section of monofilament or wire that protects the fishing line from damage. Sometimes a leader may also be used to reduce the visibility of the fishing line. Leaders can range from 3 inches to 10 or more feet in length, depending on the species targeted and the fishing conditions. Monofilament leaders are normally used, except for toothy fish where a wire leader may be called for. All fishermen should know how to rig leaders.
How to Make a Fishing Leader
Step 1 Decide if you need a wire or monofilament leader. Use the side cutters to cut the leader to the required length. Make sure that you add 8-10 inches to each end for tying the knots. Step 2 Take one of the barrel swivels and, using a uni-knot, tie the swivel to the fishing line. Trim the excess length from the knot. The monofilament can also be tied directly to the fishing line using 2 uni-knots. Step 3 If using the wire leader, attach the wire to the barrel swivel using a haywire twist. For the monofilament leader, use another uni-knot to attach the leader to the barrel swivel. Step 4 Take the fishing lure or hook and and tie them to the leader. Use another Haywire Twist for the wire leader, or a uni-knot for the monofilament leader. Step 5 Now go and catch the big one, without worrying about the line breaking. Tips & Warnings

appear important, but in reality are important to someone else, not you. They don't make long-term differences. These are things like phone calls, drop-ins, meetings, some mail, texting, email. 4. Is this NOT URGENT and NOT IMPORTANT? This is an area of wasted time. These are activities that give a sense of survival or escape. They are things like mindless TV, certain novels, junk mail, and busy work. Some things fall into this category when we over obsess on perfection, day-dream, or dwell on an issue. Step 4 What things are taking up the majority of your time and how important are they to achieving your overall goals? Ask yourself what you are doing that is important, and what are you doing that is urgent. Often the urgent takes over and the important gets shoved to the back burner to be done another time or day. Step 5 It is impossible to slow the sands of time, but what we can do is make choices that make each grain of sand count for more. Consider how you can eliminate all the things in the third and fourth category by delegating, deleting or delaying. If you spend most of your time in category one and three, are you an adrenaline junky? By focusing on the urgent, you will miss the important. Consider how you can spend more time in category two. Act how you want others to act, keep your word about everything as best as you can, and do your job the way you want other people to do theirs. Don't think leaders can't make mistakes. Leaders own up to mistakes and learn from them. Don't worry about whether or not others treat you the same way as you treat them or handle themselves as you handle yourself. These are certainly concerns, but do not make them the focus. Other people may take some time to come come around themselves (if ever, in some cases). In the meantime consider the fact that regardless of how others act, if you don't keep promises, fulfill obligations, admit your errors and try to learn from them, other people will not respect you and rely on you to be responsible. Without those attributes, you cannot lead people. If people can look to you for those things, then you are more of a leader. Step 8 Promote self confidence in others and encourage them. People who want to be leaders only to serve their own egos do not usually try to make others feel empowered, excited and confident in their own abilities. This is because when someone wants to lead only to feel good about themselves, they tend to also think they'll feel better about themselves if the people around them feel smaller. Strong leaders know how to leverage the power of the many. They don't try to impress everyone by doing everything themselves. You can better leverage the strength of others by encouraging confidence in them. Remember, your job is to inspire those around you, not to have people worship you! Step 9 Be patient and don't expect results immediately or too soon. This applies to your own habits and behaviors, a situation, and especially the people around you. Part of big picture thinking is recognizing that change and growth happens very slowly, and also that it must begin somewhere. Begin holding yourself to a higher standard with the goal of developing stronger, more productive relationships with others but don't expect your effort to bear mutual results instantly.
