IGNITE – HIGHER EDUCATION

THE PROBLEM
Dwindling number of Master’s and PhDs  Not enough PhDs to meet the growing staff requirements of universities  Employability and skill level of graduates

THE EFFECT
India is looked upon as a country which can do the low skill level BPO work but not the knowledge intensive work (Mind here, I am saying India and not Indians)  The best brains from India interested in research (top students from IIT’s and other top engineering colleges) migrate to developed countries

UNDERLYING ROOT CAUSE
Low quality and shortage of faculty

Low participation of corporate in developing skills

Unskilled and unemployable graduates

Hurdle in growth of knowledge intensive industry

Employability and performance in job issues

THE BIG IDEA
India needs to produce large number of quality graduates rather than a large quantity of low quality to take advantage of the “demographic dividend”  Who all should be involved

 Government  Corporate

 Master’s

& PhD graduates

3 PRONGED APPROACH
Ensure quality and not just quantity

Stimulate corporate participation

Lure Master’s and PhDs into teaching profession

Higher Education System

HOW TO ENSURE QUALITY & SUSTAIN IT

Focus should be on intellectual curiosity rather than on competitive excellence

Fields except engineering and medical need brilliant brains to create better prospects and develop such fields Government should promote industry to create opportunities

Raise the passing standards from the engineering institutes
  

Passing out should mean a bare minimum employability skill Marking mechanism should not only be exam based but practical based Regularly update the curriculum based on the contemporary technologies

HOW TO LURE MASTER’S & PHDS

Two motivations which can lure them
 Intellectual
 Highly

satisfaction

motivated and enthusiastic students will prompt them to put in efforts  Support from industry in terms of projects which are challenging
 Better

pay packages

 Better

graduates should mean corporate should support colleges in keeping good academicians with them

HOW TO STIMULATE CORPORATE PARTICIPATION

Incentivize participation of corporate at engineering college levels

Tax benefits to corporate involved

Last year at college can be a training ground for the corporate who otherwise spend huge amounts of money in training at offices
Train students by giving projects and let the teachers look over the process  Teachers can be paid based on the performance of graduates conducted by corporate after training

STRIKING BALANCE

Stress on passing quality graduates might initially lead to a drop in the number of students graduates but it will create a long term trend of ensuring quality Too much involvement of corporate might lead to controlling issues. So a healthy balance should be ensured between what the corporate need and what should be taught to ensure sound knowledge
