About the Scholar Recognition Program
The program began as an Otsego County Chamber of Commerce initiative. It has grown to be
a program that enhances relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions
of higher and continuing education. The program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement
by a member of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the
DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas. It also recognizes teacher nominated by each student
scholar for having a signifcant and benefcial infuence on his/her education.
Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service
to his or her school and community. Teachers can be from any grade level and any subject area, from
kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The Scholar Recognition planning committee consists of representatives of Mang Insurance,
DCMO BOCES, ONC BOCES, Catskill Area School Study Council, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick,
SUNY Delhi, and Alan Lincourt Photography.
In this booklet, you will see a brief profle of each selected student and teacher to be honored,
along with a profle of the sponsors who have made this program possible.

How can I possibly say how much Mrs. Phetteplace has meant to my
education in only 100 words? I had the pleasure of having her as a teacher
for my fourth and ffth grade years. We had a bit of a rough start but right
away, we just clicked. She made learning fun through projects like the
historical bottle fgures and the many fox stickers I received on papers.
The greatest lesson I learned from her was that true beauty lies not in what
is on the outside, but in having a beautiful mind as well.

Jonathan Andrews, class of 2014 at Andes Central School, is the son of
John and Laurie Andrews. Throughout high school, Jonathan has completed
the most rigorous academic program available to him, always pursuing
excellence. In addition to his high school courses, he will have completed 12
credit hours of college coursework by the end of his senior year. Jonathan has
been elected to the National Honor Society and plans on majoring in History
in college. His goals include teaching social studies at the high school level
and eventually becoming a school administrator.
In addition to being an outstanding student, Jonathan is very involved in
school and community activities. He is a member of high school chorus, has
played leading roles in six musical productions and is involved in numerous
clubs and service organizations at school and in the community. He is also
a member of the track and feld team.
When this task was laid before me, I immediately thought of my former
Spanish teacher Mr. Rhone. Mr. Rhone is an extremely special sort of
person who is very dedicated to his career. I remember struggling through
Spanish class; however, Mr. Rhone’s assistance was a constant. Mr. Rhone
always found time to help me whether it meant time before or after school.
But what he really “educated” me on is much more important than school
curriculum. Through our many discussions Mr. Rhone has given me insight
into life, taught me how to be kind, wise, and happy; all characteristics that
he embodies. Mr. Rhone has surpassed being a mere teacher, I consider him
a personal mentor.

Mr. Alex is the technology teacher and was one of my past class advisors.
Even though I have only taken two classes with him, he still managed to have
a signifcant impact on my education. He showed me that education was
not about earning the highest grade possible by whatever means necessary,
but instead he showed that education was about learning the material and
obtaining knowledge. My father had always said this, but through Mr. Alex,
I understood it. He infuences everyone in a positive way with his ability to
make you crack a smile. Thank you, Mr. Alex.

It started with a documentary on Industrialization, then a lecture after
school because I didn’t understand Reconstruction, and then it spiraled
into the most wonderful educational experience I have had in high school.
Soon, lunch didn’t mean social hour in the cafeteria, it meant listening
to Mr. Noto’s fascinating, impassioned, and absorbing lectures. Not only
did Mr. Noto bring me to love American history, he helped me realize the
complexity, depth, and drama of all history. He challenged my writing skills,
encouraged me to make connections I never imagined existed, and taught
me to appreciate the pervasive infuence of history.

Emily Greenberg was a pleasure to have in class and may be the best
student I have ever taught. She is motivated by a genuine intellectual curiosity
and a sincere thirst for knowledge. She assumes responsibility for her own
learning and takes advantage of every opportunity to do extra work—
not as a chance for extra credit, but as another opportunity to learn. Emily
wants to learn for the sake of learning. Emily demonstrates the ability to deal
with complex historical questions and the ability to see connections across
historical time. She brings to her studies a “humanities-like approach.”
What she learns in one discipline, she applies in all. She is adept in
the use of both primary and secondary sources; and being a tremendous
writer, she presents interpretations in well-developed papers. Emily has the
intellectual ability, the discipline and determination to go along with the research, writing and speaking
skills to be a genuine scholar. She will someday write books and deliver lectures to both scholars and the
general public.

Out of my four years of high school, this man has helped me throughout
my mathematics path in high school. No matter whether it was algebra or
calculus, he always presented the information he was teaching in a way that
everyone could understand. Not only did he make himself available when
I needed help outside of class or when I needed help getting caught up and
understanding everything I missed due to surgery the past two years, he
also taught me everything I needed to know about college. He has taught
me everything about the application process, how to transfer my present
college credits, and provided me with the information about scholarships.

Sure, a lot has changed since then. We started out with one truck of milk a day and now use over four million pounds daily.
And, our products are now available nationwide as well as in Australia. But, there are some things that will never change, like
our unwavering commitment to producing the best-tasting, highest quality products and being nothing but good to our fans,

Chobani is 100% committed to every spoonful, of every cup, of every batch—from farm to fridge, from fridge to table, from

There have been a multitude of teachers and friends who have
immensely helped me throughout my school career, but none more than
my English teacher, Mr. Burch. He has not only taught me how to analyze
a poem or decipher a text, but has instilled life lessons and morals that
I abide by regularly. Mr. Burch constantly pushes me to strive towards
seemingly unattainable goals and is always there when I’m in need of
assistance. I cannot express my appreciation nor can I thank him enough.
This recognition should be for him just as much as it is for me; he regularly
makes English enjoyable for his students, and displays a unique passion for
teaching every single day.

When I was informed of my selection as the salutatorian of the Class of

Growing up in a school that has less than three hundred and ffty
kids, I have truly been able to build close ties with the faculty and staff.
There is one person, though, who has undoubtedly infuenced me in the
best ways; my track coach. Track has always been a huge part of my life,
as I had participated in it for the entirety of my high school career. From
grades seven through twelve I have had the opportunity to train with
Mr. West and develop skills that not only prepared me for State Qualifer-
level competition, but for the rest of my life as well. He has taught me the
very aspects of discipline, ambition, and perseverance, and I will appreciate
that for the rest of my life. Mr. West has also helped me and seen me through
some of my worst injuries, and because of that I thank him greatly.

Mr. Hough has inspired me with his attitude towards teaching and
willingness to teach students who want to go beyond the required curriculum.
In Mr. Hough’s seventh grade math class, I found myself getting bored of
how easily I could go through the problems. So I asked Mr. Hough if I
could have some extra work that would be a little more challenging, he
was happy to supply me with a ninth grade algebra book and assignments
solving equations. He was also interested in what his students did outside
of his classroom, either in other classes or after school activities. He was
willing to learn from his students when they knew more about a topic than
he did, and he still keeps up with what his students are up to after they move

Mrs. Jacobus has not only impacted me positively in class, but also as
a role model because she cares for people with the utmost respect. I could
trust her with my personal hardships and emotional stress. Her ability to
persuade students is amazing; no matter what student she had, she would get
them to read books. Her impact on me was even greater; she motivated me
to participate verbally and she helped me to be a better writer. Because of
her sincerity, her comments on my report cards would outshine every other
teacher’s. This made me feel so special and recognized. Her lovable, positive,
persuasive, understanding, and enthusiastic nature puts a smile on everyone’s
face.

One of the most infuential people in my life has my high school math
teacher, Mrs. Pittelli. Ever since I met her, she has always pushed me to do
my best and never anything less. Even though she’s my math teacher I’ve
learned some very important life lessons from, and with her, that I may not
have learned anywhere else. Mrs. Pittelli is very intelligent and is always
learning new ways to accomplish things. I appreciate how much she has
done for me throughout the years and always being there for me. I will be
forever grateful with the fact that I got to be a part of this amazing woman’s
life.

Of all the teachers I have had throughout high school, Mr. Stevenson
is the one who made me most enthusiastic about learning and going to
class each day. His positive outlook, great sense of humor, patience, and
genuine love of chemistry rubs off on everyone who walks into his room.
He genuinely cares about each student and their success both inside and
outside of his classroom. His class motivated me to continue with chemistry
in my future, showing the infuence of his teaching. I am grateful to have
been taught by a teacher as encouraging and inspiring as he is.

Madame Crooker has had a signifcant impact on me throughout my
high school career. She has been my French teacher since freshman year
and since then has been the teacher that I hold the utmost respect for. She is
kind hearted and is always willing to go that extra mile to help out students.
Whenever I have had a question about things, no matter what they were I
knew I could rely on her to give me her honest opinion on things. Madame
Crooker will always be the teacher who I believe impacted me most.

In addition to being an excellent all around student, Myriah made
it a priority to get the most out of her high school career through extra-
curricular activities. She participated in a variety of sports including soccer,
volleyball, softball, and golf. She also found time to be in clubs such as the
Environmental Club, French Club, FBLA, and is a member of the school’s
National Honor Society. She serves as class treasurer; as she has done
each year. She also has been the HOBY representative for the school and
participated with the “Make A Wish Foundation”. She is an excellent role
model and is well-liked by her teachers, peers and teammates.
Myriah has not decided where she will attend college yet, but has
narrowed it down to either Daemen College or Campbell University where
she will study International Business.

If you asked me to choose just one teacher that had the biggest impact
on me, there is one that immediately comes to mind, Mr. John Collins
stands above all others. Throughout my Junior and Senior years at Unatego,
he has done so much for me. He pushed me to work harder, and always has
something helpful to say. I will surely take everything I’ve learned from
him with me to college and life in general. I can say with utmost confdence
that I wouldn’t be where I am today without Mr. Collins helping me to see
my full potential.

Tristin Roefs is exemplary. He is an excellent student, but that does not
begin to tell the story of Tristin as a person. As he progresses through the
phases of life, I believe Tristin will be defned by his work ethic, integrity,
compassion and leadership ability. I am continually impressed by the sense
of pride Tristin exhibits in everything he does. I have learned that Tristin
will infallibly stand steadfastly for truth and honesty whether it relates to
someone else’s actions or his own. Tristin always exhibits a willingness to
listen and assist others whenever necessary.
While it is certainly possible to learn many leadership qualities, Tristin
has been blessed with the innate quality that gives him a distinct advantage.
His mere presence in a room draws attention, and others in his company are
naturally drawn to listen to whatever Tristin has to say. In combination with his irreproachable character,
this propensity truly provides Tristin with limitless potential.

Mrs. Brooks has been my math teacher for fve years. She is such an
encouragement to each of her students. Whether by asking how my day is
going or simply talking after class with me, Mrs. Brooks is like a second
mom. She has taught me how to think logically through math problems by
taking the principles that she has already taught and applying them to the
problem at hand. One of my favorite things about Mrs. Brooks is that her
classroom is fun. She teaches the material while keeping the atmosphere
light and winsome. She goes out of her way to get to know her students and
to invest in them personally. She is always putting others needs before her
own, and she inspires me to do the same.

When I walked into Mrs. Tucker’s room for my frst student council
meeting, I had no idea the impact she would have on me for the rest of my
high school experience. Not only did Mrs. Tucker teach me the importance
of being true to myself and in following my dreams, but she also taught
me the importance of stating one’s opinion in a diplomatic way. This has
greatly improved my writing and conversational skills. She has also helped
build up my self- confdence and has always been there to listen.

Her exceptional caliber is easily noted as one views Heather’s success
in academics, athletics, and extra-curricular endeavors. Her involvement in
her school and community is not only impressive but diverse as well. Her
demeanor is one built of passion, upon a strong work ethic, and blended
with an unparalleled dedication and perseverance. People see her desire to
do well, to succeed, and to move herself beyond the norm. What they might
not see is her genuine acceptance of and her compassion for others.
She is strong and sensitive. She cares deeply and thoroughly for those
around her and for those who need an advocate. She does not dismiss others
when she doesn’t agree, but she will respectfully fght for her views. Even
when things do not come easily, she strives to do well. She accepts the
challenges of her generation while challenging all to be better and to see the greater purpose.

Mrs. Hugick inspires me to put as much passion and love into everything
I do, as she puts into being a teacher. Not only does she make math more
enjoyable than I thought it could be, but she also devotes massive amounts
of time and energy to the success of her students. While in the New Vision
program this year, I don’t receive a math credit. Mrs. Hugick records every
calculus class and helps me earn a math credit on my own after school.
She is an amazing individual. I hope to channel her selfessness into my
future career in healthcare, and make my patients feel as cared for as Mrs.
Hugick’s students do.

Ashley displays several qualities needed to succeed in today’s world; she
is hard working and understands the importance of setting goals. From the
frst day Ashley entered school, she has taken an active role in enhancing
her education. Her enrollment in the New Visions Medical program is
an example of her initiative. Ashley’s enrollment does not allow her to
participate in pre-calculus at Worcester so Ashley took the initiative to enroll
in pre-calculus as an independent study so she could receive college credit.
During Ashley’s high school career, she has been an active member of the
National Honor Society, marching band, concert band, chorus, SADD and
College For Every Student and has performed leadership duties in many
of these activities. She has also performed in her school’s annual musical
productions as well as community theatrical and musical events. Ashley also represented her school at
Empire Girls State.
Throughout high school, Ashley has been awarded numerous awards for her exemplary academic
achievements and she is the Valedictorian for the class of 2014. Ashley plans to attend Elmira College and
enroll in a Biology- Chemistry Pre-Med Program.
