Zerstrungsfreie Werkstoffprfung
(Oberflchen-Riprfung)
mit DIFFU-THERM Eindringverfahren
Rot - Weiss und
Fluoreszenz-System
_________________________________________________________________________________
Prfsystem Rot - Weiss
Allgemeines
u. a. zweckmige Werkstoffeinsparungen.
Behlter-, Rohrleitungs-, Armaturen-, Flugzeug-, Automobil-, Reaktor-, Tur-
binen-, Schiffs-, Brcken- und Stahlbauer, Hrtereien, Schleifereien, Werk-
zeugmacher u. v. m.
Dosenrand eingeprgt. Die Prfmittel haben eine Mindesthaltbarkeit von 5
Jahren.
erhalten bleibt.
te zeigen tiefergehende Fehler an.

In

Non-destructive material testing
(Surface crack test)
with DIFFU-THERM Penetration
method
Red - White and
Fluorescence-System
____________________________________________________________________________________
Test system Red - White
General
Todays requirement for economic production include among others reasonable
economy of material.
This requires both the exact registration of all stress loads upon the structures
and a thorough test and control of the manufactured parts.
It is just the surface cracks which represent the most dangerous defects in
highly stressed work-pieces as they may lead to fracture within a short time,
due to their notch effect. In such cases the non-destructive testing according
to the DIFFU-THERM method can be highly recommended.
This method is the oldest German red-white penetration method. It was
developed at the Junkers Aircraft and Engine Works at Dessau and patented
as early as 1943 unter DBP No. 895.839.
The inventor was Helmut Klumpf to whom an extended patent under DBP Nr.
1.207.663 was granted for an improved method.
Principle and function
The penetrant DIFFUSIONS-RED is spread on the test surface. Due to its
individual properties (surface tension, viscosity and density) the penetrant,
by capillary action, enters even in micro-cracks open to the surface.
The developer, which is applied after the excess penetrant removal, dissolves
the dye and absorbs it into the remaining developer layer during and after the
evaporation of the carrier fluid.
Existing defects are made clearly visible. Linear indications are a sign of cracks
or lack of fusion, individual point indications are a sign of pores.
Application
The DIFFU-THERM method may be applied for finding surface defects on
any kind of metallic material such as cast steel, grey cast iron, malleable cast
iron, alloyed and non alloyed steels, light metal and to a certain extent
13
also on non ferrous metal and pressure casting as well as on metalloids etc.
The main users are foundries, welding shops, manufacturers of machines,
containers, pipes, fittings, aeroplanes, cars, reactors, turbines, ships, bridges
and steel structures, hardening shops, grinding shops, tool manufacturers
etc. The applied test mediums correspond to the ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code, Section V. The are free of corroding agents.
Specimens of each batch number are examined by an independent official
board of science for materials according to ASTM D 129-95 / D 808-95.
Test certificates with the relevant data are delivered on request.
All packing drums are to be marked with the filling date and the batch number.
On aerosol boxes these data are engraved into the bottom edge of the box
too. The test medium has a durability of at least 5 years.
How is the DIFFU-THERM method applied?
To allow the penetrant to enter into possible surface irregularities, the test
surface must be carefully precleaned. Contaminants like scale, rust, oil, fat,
paint coats or slags must be carefully removed by mechanical or chemical
means. After that the test surface must be dried. It is essential that neither
water nor residues of the cleaning agents remain in the cracks.
Now the penetrant is applied either by spraying, brushing, flooding or dipping
the piece into the penetrant, so that the whole test area is completely wetted.
After a penetration time of 5 to 30 minutes at a temperature between 5 C
and 50 C follows the excess penetrant removal. Depending on the surface
condition the excess penetrant ist completely removed with water or a
DIFFU-THERM cleaner, but in such a manner that the penetrant in the
irregularities is not removed. In case of cracks and other defects with
considerable surface openings (0,1 m or more),the excess penetrant rem-
oval is to be preferred, as the penetrant emulsifies with water and seals off
the irregularities, so that a removal of the penetrant within the irregularities is
prevented.
If you use a cleaner (solvent), there is always a risk that the cracks are washed
out and the indication is adversely affected.
Then follows the drying of the test surface, either with a lint-free cloth or by
compressed air. Warm air up to 50 C accelerates the drying process.
Immediately after drying the developer is applied evenly and in a thin layer.
Appropriate for this are spray cans or spray gun as described on pages 50.
Application with a brush is not admissible. Before and during use the
developer should be shaken well so that the white pigments contained in
the carrier fluid do not settle. The spray can contains a mixer ball that
keeps the white pigments suspended when the can is shaken.
Overhead valves make it possible to spray from any position.
The development time is generally 5 to 30 minutes.
The developer can be made washable or permanent.
14
While in the washable developer the defect indications are steadily
ncreasing - this is called bleeding - in the permanent developer they are
bound for a limited washing after evaporation of the carrier fluid (approx. 1 to
2 minutes). This has the advantage that the test piece can be assessed or
photographed with an unchanged defect indication later. The assessment of
the test surface starts immediately after the end of the development programm
and ends according to the specification after max. 30 minutes. On the basis
of the colour indication the assessment of defect depths can only be
approximate. If the colour indication is pale red, the defect spot does not go
deeply into the material. Dark red lines or dots are an indication of deeper
defects. With intensive red indication, the depth of the defect may be estimated
by the number of applications by repeated wiping off and repeated appliations
of the developer (until a pale red indication appears).
After the test the washable developer can be easily wiped off.
The permanent developer BEW, however, must be removed with the BRE-
cleaner. In order to ascertain through-thickness cracks in case of thin-walled
test pieces you spray the penetrant on the one side and the developer on the
other. The penetrated penetrant is visible on the developer layer.
Test System FLUORESCENCE (water-washable)
All prescribed applications and test procedures of the test system red-
white apply to this system too.
During the excess penetrant removal, however, the test surface should be
examined for residues of the penetrant UV-FLUORESCENCE UVF - 4.
This is done with a UV-lamp during and after the excess penetrant removal.
The wet developer is applied by spraying. The dry developer is preferably
used in crack test systems. It is applied on the test surface by even spraying.
The inspection of the test surface is carried out under UV-radiation. Existing
defects appear as fluorescent dots or lines.
When post emulsifiable fluorescent penetrants are applied, an emulsifying
process must be carried out between penetration and excess penetrant rem-
oval.
The emulsification time is to be fixed in such a way that during the subse-
quent excess penetrant removal with water only the excess penetrant is
removed.
NEW improved penetration process
The advantage of this process is that slight contaminations in the cracks as
e.g. oil and fatty residues are dyed by the penetration. A further advantage is
that the applier can recognize when the penetration time is over, i.e. as soon
as the user fluid has evaporated. This is indicated by a change of the colour
into brown. The penetration time depends on the test temperature. In case

Protection of labour
DIFFU-THERM test means are classified and marked according to the EC-
regulation.
When dealing with test mediums, the following regulations have to be
observed: Regulation for the prevention of accidents, rules for working with
dangerous materials, the relevant environmental safety precautions and the
information on the containers. Safety data sheets acc. to 93/112 EC are
presented for all products.
When applied in small rooms, there must be effective ventilation. Special
care must be taken when used inside tanks.
When entering tanks, it is absolutely necessary to observe the regulations for
prevention of accidents. Within containers and closed rooms the use of
breathing apparatus and filters is not admissible. Only breathing units are to
be used that are independent of the air at the working place, e.g. hose units,
oxygen- or compressed air-units. Skin contact should be avoided, and the
instructions on the containers concerning the prevention of accidents are to
be observed.
Advantages of the DIFFU-THERM-method:
maximum reliability of test result
simple operation
quick performance of test procedure
nearly all materials can be tested
non-destructive testing
economical testing
Approval
Almost all DIFFU-THERM test media are type approved and acccepted as
per DIN EN ISO 3452, part 2 (page 39) and DIN 54152, part 2.
of low temperatures evaporates more slowly. During intermediate cleaning
the dried penetrant is removed with purifier or water from the test surface.
Washing the penetrant from the cracks is not easy to do. After spraying on
the developer the indications are clearly contrasted. The developing process
is completed when the developer is dry. Even after days no change in the
indications can be seen.
The process in patent pending.
