ASTRO DESCRIPTION OF HOUSES

First House [Lagna]:



1. Personal identity and information about physical appearance, vitality and self-confidence.
2. Determines how an individual presents himself/herself to the outside world.
3. Shows the circumstances of birth and the body itself.
4. It is a summary of the complete horoscope and the most important house in the
horoscope.
5. A favorable lagna bhaava can neutralize many of the problems in the remainder of the
horoscope.
6. In mundane (state or political) astrology, the lagna signifies the people of the country.
7. In a horary chart, this house shows one's mind, physical features of the consultant and
his/her health. It represents the person who asks the question. It also indicates diseases to
one's enemies, journeys of one's children and the friends of one's brother/s.

Second House [Dhanabhaava]:

1. The second house is the house of money and money matters and largely decides the net
balance of an individual in his/her life.
2. It denotes the financial circumstances or fortune, profit or gain, loss or damage and
general financial prosperity of the native.
3. This house shows what the person acquires by his/her individual efforts and the degree of
prosperity which one will enjoy.
4. In short, all that is acquired through one's power and resources come under the purview
of this house.
5. This house indicates the native's worldly attainments by means of possession of extrinsic
value such as money or those things held to represent money such as jewelry, precious
stones, bank drafts, bonds, stocks and shares, insurance etc.
6. This house deals with family. It includes all close relatives of the native, the grandfather,
grandmother, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters etc. (kutumbam). There is no
particular reference to any single relationship, but the entire kutumbam is included.
7. Another important influence of the second house is the native's ability to express his
thoughts. This house rules vak, meaning speech.
8. The second house governs second marriage. This is so because the 2nd house is the 8th to
the 7th representing the first wife and it is generally after the death or separation from the
first wife that one gets married the second time. Though marriage is largely the concern
of the 7th house, the second house can show the time of marriage, description of the
partner and the state of married life.
9. The second bhaava also represents vision or the power of observation. The right eye
(generally eye) (the 12th is said to govern the left eye), memory and imagination are
governed by the second house. The other parts of the physical body governed by the 2nd
house are the nails, tongue, nose, teeth, cheeks and chin.
10. One has to judge the second house to find out whether the native will protect others and
whether he gains or losses through those who are dependent on him/her. Also the general
understanding between the native and the family members is judged from this house.
11. The second house also concerns law suits, uses of ordinary or costly metal, his/her trade
and business according to the native's ability to buy and sell and also faith in ancient
cultures and customs.

13. Being a maaraka sthaana, the second house shows the death of the native. The kind of

14. The second house should be considered along with the 5th house if one has to find out if

quality of the sign in which the cusp of the house falls.
15. In mundane astrology, this house signifies national wealth, banking activities and all
matters concerning revenue to the state.
16. In horary astrology, the second house shows the money of the querist, his loss or gain in
speculations relating to business and also the loans and debts of the querist.

Third House [DhairyaBhaava or SahodaraBhaava]:

1. Dhairya (courage, firmness), duschikya (bad thoughts), vikrama (prowess), bhraatru
(brother or sister), veerya (heroism) and pourusham (mental strength) are the terms
describing the third house.
2. This house rules one's mental inclination and ability, memory and the inherent
propensities of the mind and intellect. It shows the inclination to study, but the ninth
house is the one that actually shows higher education, research, wisdom and
philosophical tendencies.
3. This is the house of courage, firmness, valour, prowess and heroism.
4. It is the house representing the native's younger brother or sister. Cousins, kindred, casual
acquaintances and neighbors are also governed by this house.
5. It is a sahaayasthaana and thus one should refer to this house to see whether the native
has the assistance of others or is completely self-made.
6. It also deals with short travels, especially short inland journeys. However, long journeys
are represented by the ninth house.
7. All kinds of correspondences, letters, papers, couriers, accounting, mathematics, means
of communication such as telephone, telegraph (now internet and email) fall under this
house.
8. This house also governs change of residence (being 12th to the 4th), restlessness, want of

Fourth House [MaatruBhaava]:

1. The fourth house represents the Mother of the native.
2. This house relates to one's home, residence, domestic environments and general condition
of the native in the later part of his/her life.
3. This house is also concerned with all hidden aspects of one's life, mysteries, secrets,
private affairs and secret life.
4. It also shows one's immovable property (buildings, lands etc) and those holdings which
one takes on lease or rent, as also those rented or leased out to other people.
5. This house also shows one's vehicles (own or rented).
6. This house governs patrimony, especially with reference to hidden treasures.
7. This house has a bearing on the education and qualifications of a person. This house
indicates school and collegiate education as against higher education (post graduate,
doctoral and post-doctoral) which is governed by the 9th house. The third house shows
the mental inclination to study a particular subject.
8. The fourth house bears significance to the termination, conclusion and end of every
undertaking, whether in the nativity or in horary astrology.
9. In state astrology (political astrology), this house governs mines, gardens, public
buildings, crops, agriculture and determines the termination of any public undertaking.

Fifth House [Putra Bhaava]:

1. The fifth house is the house of progeny. It denotes whether one will have children or not.
Benefics in the 5th house and the 5th cusp falling in fruitful signs are conducive for
begetting children. The fifth house shows the first conception or pregnancy. The seventh
shows the second and the ninth the third and so on.
2. The fifth house presides over pleasure, society and social inclinations. It deals with tastes
and fancies, artistic talents and property derived through the wife or business partner's
luck.
3. The various types of recreation and entertainment, amusements, sports, love and romance
and similar interests that appeal to a person are denoted by the fifth house.
4. It is connected with all material and physical pleasures such as games, sports, cinema,
opera, drama, music, dance, banquets and amusements of all sorts. It also indicates places
of entertainment.
5. Being a trine house, it shows poorvapunya, the meritorious deeds one has done in the
previous births.
6. It is also concerned with speculative affairs and all matters of enterprise prompted by
desire.
7. All gambling games (races, lotteries, cards etc) and speculative pursuits (stock exchange
trading) come under the domain of this house.
8. The native's love affairs, the degree of success or failure one achieves in love affairs and
courtship is shown by this house.
9. It also shows licentiousness, legitimate and illegitimate affairs.
10. As it represents the seat of physical attraction between the opposite sexes, all kinds of
rape, kidnap, sexual offences etc come under the purview of this house.
11. In political astrology, the fifth house indicates envoys, ambassadors and political
meetings and banquets.
12. This house also indicates short journeys to the younger brother, mother's bank position,
changes in maternal uncle's position, his loss or hospitalization etc.

Sixth House [RinaBhaava or RogaBhaava]:

1. This is known as the house of sickness. It indicates disease and sickness, the real state of
the disease, recovery from it and whether it is of a long or short duration.
2. The sixth house is concerned with disease; the 12th (6th to the 6th) is concerned with
hospitalization and the 11th (12th to the 12th) with discharge from the hospital.
3. This is a very important house for people who deal with patients and sick people.
4. This house also governs food and dietary habits of the native.
5. The sixth house is also connected with the work and service rendered by the native to
others (working for an employer) and the exhaustion caused due to it.
6. It also denotes ones' servants, subordinates and employees working under one. The
condition and faithfulness of the subordinates is to be ascertained from the sixth house.
7. It also denotes loss to the opponent and gain to the native.
8. This house also governs all pet animals and cattle.
9. It also governs tenants (agricultural or house tenants), enemies and foes.

13. It indicates the loans taken by an individual and how much one will be in debt in his life.


Seventh House [KalatraBhaava]:

1. This is the house of earthly union and ties. It represents legal bondage and marriage in
one's life.
2. Although the seventh is the principal house governing an individual's marriage, the
houses 2 and 11 also need to be judged.
3. Besides the life partner, this house also indicates the partner in business or trade. The
degree of success or failure in business or partnerships is also shown by this house.
4. The seventh house also governs all those with whom the native enters into an agreement
or contract and also those with whom the native is engaged in quarrels, litigations,
scuffles and fights.
5. This house shows anyone who competes with the native in any undertaking, minor or
major.
6. In short, the seventh house governs all those with whom a native transacts or deals with
in any manner (one's lawyer, doctor, contractor, architect etc). The person who lends
money to the native or one who borrows from him/her is also shown by the seventh
house.
7. This house denotes whether one will mix freely in society or be reserved.
8. Fines, divorces, legal bondages, agreements, contracts etc. are other matters which are
ruled by the seventh house.
9. This house shows break of a journey. The third house shows short journeys and the ninth

the planets signifying the seventh house.
11. The seventh house opposes the first house and hence is a maaraka house and also it is the
12th to the 8th which governs longevity.
12. In horary astrology, the seventh house answers queries relating to the recovery of lost or
stolen property and describes the thief. The lagna represents the owner of the stolen
property, the fourth bhaava the place of the stolen articles and 7th the thief.
13. The seventh also shows change in one's residence. This house along with the third house
needs to be judged for answering queries concerning change of residence.
14. In mundane astrology, the seventh house shows international relations, wars and
arbitrations. This is the house of open warfare and enemity as well as the house of treaties
and alliances.
15. It also shows the third brother or sister to the native. It is also the house of self-
acquisition to the native's servants/subordinates or employees.
16. This house shows the native's second conception or second child.

Eighth House [Ayurbhaava]:

1. This is the house of longevity. The 1st, 3rd and 8th houses are to be judged in order to
know the longevity of a person.
2. It is also called as the house of death and it indicates the mode and place of death.
3. It is related to all inheritances, legacies, wills, insurance, gratuity etc., which usually
come after the death of the owner of the will/insurance etc.
4. This house shows the mode of death, whether it is natural, sudden, accident, suicide etc.
and also the place where one dies.
5. The time of death is found out from the 2nd and 7th houses along with the baadhaka
houses.
6. The 8th house indicates surgeons, medical officers, health inspectors, slaughter houses,
butchers, and coroners and so on.
7. Jupiter or Saturn signifying the 8th house cause one to develop a deep interest in occult
sciences and mystical subjects.
8. In mundane astrology, this house deals with public mortality, the death rate of the
country, epidemics, serious accidents, mass deaths etc.
9. In horary astrology, this house has to be referred to for information relating to crossing of
rivers, difficulties during a journey, and sufferings due to enemies, sudden happenings
and accidents.

Ninth House [AcharyaBhaava or PoorvaBhaagyaBhaava]:

1. This is the house of faith, wisdom and divine worship. It is an auspicious house as it
shows one's fortune in the present as a result of poorvabhaagya. It shows the good deeds
one has done in previous births.
2. Since this house rules philosophy, religious and philosophical beliefs, if Jupiter happens
to be a significator of the 9th house, the native will be religious, devoted, orthodox and
kind hearted.
3. All affairs concerning temples, places of worship and all religious institutions, including
those devoted to promoting the spiritual welfare of people, are to be ascertained from the
9th house.
4. This is the house for pilgrimages, holy places, circular wells, sacrifices and charity.
5. This is the house of higher learning and research. It has domain over higher research,
innovation, discovery, invention, exploration and submission of thesis.
6. This house rules the Father of the native and also the preceptor of the native (Guru or
Acharya).
7. This is the house of spiritual initiation, law and legal arbitration.
8. Dreams and visions come under the purview of this house. Also the ability to be a
clairvoyant, to communicate with spirits comes under the purview of this house.
9. This is the house for long journeys, away from the place of primary residence. It also

native.

Tenth Bhaava [Karma Bhaava]:

1. This is the Madhya (Meridian Coeli) of the horoscope, representing Jeevana (livelihood),
raajyapada (kingdom), sat (goodness), kriya (work), vyaapara (commerce and trade), jaya
(success), aspada (rank or position), aachara (good conduct), maana (honor), guna
(quality), artha (wealth), gamana (gait), pravritti (inclination) and karma (occupation).
2. This is also known as the midheaven, or angle of the south, whose cusp, the Sun touches
every day at noon at every place on the earth. Hence it is regarded as the chief or supreme
angle of the heavens.
3. In astrological predictions, it is the most important bhaava concerning one's fame, name,
honor and recognition.
4. It is one of the four Kendra (angular) houses, the others being 1, 4 and 7. It is said that
planets occupying the Kendra houses are the strongest in their disposition. Houses 2, 5, 8
and 11 are called as the succedent or panaphara houses and planets in these are endowed
with moderate strength. Planets occupying the cadent or apokilma houses, i.e., 3, 6, 9 and
12 are said to have the weakest disposition as far as strength is concerned.
5. The tenth house is described as the house of lordship, honor, dignity and public esteem.
As it is at the apex of the heavens, it rightly represents the worldly attainments of the
native, achieved through name, fame, power, prestige, credit and conduct, success and
status, rank and reknown, respect and reputation and ambition and authority.

nature and type of one's profession/business. The houses 2, 6 and 10 are known as the
material trinity as they correspond to the 2nd, 6th and 10th signs of the zodiac which are
earthy signs denoting material gains.
9. The tenth house is also known as karma sthaana. It includes doing the last rites to one's
parents, performance of religious functions, yagnas etc.
10. Sometimes, in certain horoscopes it is very evident that every time one gets a very good
advancement in professional life, one loses one of the parents. Being the second to the
9th representing Father, the tenth house is the maarakasthaana for the father. It is also the
maaraka house to mother by being 7th to the 4th.
11. The tenth house has reference to the employer, superior, master in trade or profession,
judge and the government.
12. In horary questions, this house concerns the judges, judgment and the substances taken
away by the thieves (being the 4th to the 7th denoting the thief).
13. In mundane astrology, the tenth house deals with the government in a general sense, its
affairs and the chief executive of the state. It signifies the head of the state, whether he is
the monarch or the president.
14. The tenth house also signifies self-earned money of one's father by being the 2nd from
the 9th representing Father.

Eleventh Bhaava [LaabhaBhaava]:

1. The main terms used to describe this house are - shubhaekaadasha (the auspicious
eleventh), aaya (all kinds of income or receipts), aagamana (acquisitions), praapti (gains),
kaama (desires), siddhi (fulfillment of one's desires), vaibhava (wealth or riches),
shlaaghayata (veneration and commendation) and sarasa (juicy and succulent).
2. In all forms of astrology, the eleventh house is venerated as the house of friends. It stands
for all those people who are allied to the native by liking, sympathy, interest or
admiration. Therefore, the eleventh reveals the type of friends one can have.
3. From this house should be judged all questions concerning ones' hopes, wishes,
aspirations and their fulfillment. In general this house governs success in all
undertakings, be it professional or personal.
4. This house is also commonly referred to as laabhasthaana, denoting profit or gain. It is
through this house that every accumulation of wealth is to be judged.
5. One may earn by self-efforts, which is indicated by the lagna and second houses.
Earnings through publications, agency, younger brother etc. are shown by the 3rd house.
Money received through mother, immovable property, treasures etc comes under the
purview of the 4th house. Gains by speculations, sports, lottery, stock trading,
entertainment etc. are shown by the 5th house. 6th shows income from pet animals, loans,
borrowing, rendering service etc. Income accruing through one's business partnerships,
wife or husband, litigation etc. is shown by the 7th house. The 8th house shows income
from insurance, wills, legacy, inheritances etc. Money or income derived through foreign
collaborations, contracts with strangers, from one' father, or from research or innovations
come under the purview of the 9th house. Lastly income from one's profession, business
or inheritance is indicated by the 10th house. The 12th house of the horoscope shows all
sorts of expenses, investments, withdrawal from the bank or savings etc. Adding the
income resulting from houses 1 to 10 and deducting the expenses caused by the 12th, the
net profit one gains is indicated by the 11th house.
6. The 11th house presides among other things, over pleasure, prosperity, profit, progress in
attempts, peace after achievement of aspirations, partnerships and permanent ties of
friendship (such as business partners and marriage partner).
7. The desire to have a reunion with estranged people is shown by this house and so one has
to investigate this house to infer what sort of emotional attachments one will have.
8. The eleventh house should be judged to ascertain how far one will succeed in social and
financial matters and whether at all one will succeed. The 11th house reflects the native's

11. The 11th house denotes the financial affairs of the employer or those in command over

branches. It represents the wealth and money to the national exchequer or the
government, and also rules the friends and allies of a nation.
13. In horary astrology, this house is concerned with the fulfillment of all desires of the
querist. It also signifies freedom from disease and discharge from the hospital (by being
12th to the 12th).

Twelfth House [VrayaBhaava or Moksha Bhaava]:

1. According to Hindu astrology, the first 8 houses of the horoscope indicate worldly
pleasures and attainments (ihalokasukha), while the last four (9, 10, 11 and 12) denote
paralokasaadhana or spiritual fulfillment. The 9th house is the house of dharma, 10th that
of artha, 11th of kaama and 12th of moksha.
2. The 12th house governs a souls' final emancipation from the chain of births and deaths. It
governs the meditative capabilities and ascetic life style which the native follows.
3. In material terms, it denotes losses and impediments, restraint and limitation, waste and
extravagance, expenses far outweighing income, drudgery and deception.
4. This house also denotes the charity which one undertakes, and one's association with and
donation to philanthropic organizations.

10. It is also known as the house of solitude, secret and silent suffering and self-undoing.
11. The 6th house shows ordinary service rendered to others, while the 12th house shows
profound service rendered to humanity or mankind at large.
12. In mundane or political astrology, the 12th house deals with all philanthropic, charitable
and reformative organizations, jails, asylums, hospitals, and places of confinement. It
refers to crime in general and criminals, spies, foes, secret agents and enemies of the
country in particular.
