1. The function f is defined by

(a) Express f (x) in terms of partial fractions. [4]

(b) Use your result to part (a) to find the value of f (0). [3]

2. Find the equation of the tangent to the curve

at the point (2, 3). [4]

3. (a) Find all values of in the range 0 X X 360 satisfying

4 cos 2 = 1 2 sin.

(b) (i) Express 8 sin x + 15 cos x in the form R sin (x + ),

where R and are constants with R 1 0 and 0 ! ! 90.

(ii) Find all values of x in the range 0 X x X 360 satisfying

8 sin x + 15 cos x = 11.

(iii) Find the greatest possible value for k so that

8 sin x + 15 cos x = k

has solutions. Give a reason for your answer. [7]

4. The region R is bounded by the curve the x-axis and the lines x = 3, x = 4.

Find the volume generated when R is rotated through four right-angles about the x-axis. Give

your answer correct to the nearest integer. [5]

5. Expand in ascending powers of x up to and including the term in x

2

.

State the range of values of x for which your expansion is valid.

Hence, by writing in your expansion, find an approximate value for in the form

where a and b are integers whose values are to be found. [5]

8. Water is leaking from a hole at the bottom of a large tank. The volume of the water in the tank

at time t hours is V m

3

. The rate of decrease of V is directly proportional to V

3

.

(a) Write down a differential equation satisfied by V. [1]

(b) Given that V = 60 when t = 0, show that

9. The position vectors of the points A and B are given by

a = 4i + j 6k,

b = 6i + 2j 4k,

respectively.

(a) Determine whether or not the vectors a and b are perpendicular, giving a reason for your

answer. [2]

(b) (i) Write down the vector AB.

(ii) Find the vector equation of the line AB. [3]

(c) The vector equation of the line L is given by

r = 2i + 6j + pk + ( 2i + j + 3k),

where p is a constant.

Given that the lines AB and L intersect, find the value of p. [5]
