The UK Book Publishing Industry in Statistics 2012

1 UK publishers total sales of digital and physical books

The invoiced value of UK publisher sales of books rose 4% in 2012 to 3.3bn with a 66%
increase in digital sales offsetting a 1% decrease in physical book sales. Digital sales now
represent 12% of UK publishers total digital and physical book sales.

2 UK publishers home and export sales of physical books

The 1% decrease in the invoiced value of physical book sales in 2012 reflected a 1%
decrease in both home and export sales. Volume sales to home market fell by 1%, while
volume sales to export markets fell by 3%.

3 Home (UK) physical book market

The value of the UK physical book market in 2012, at end purchaser prices, is estimated
to have been 3.1bn. This was 0.2% higher than in 2011.

3.1 Consumer expenditure on books

According to Bowker Market Researchs Books & Consumers, consumers aged 12-74
bought 344m books in 2011, spending 2.1bn.

3.2 Total consumer market (TCM) through the retail market

According to Nielsen Book, the TCM value sales of physical books through the retail
market declined by 4.6% to 1.5bn in 2012, while volume sales fell by 3.4% to 202m.

3.3 Library expenditure on books

The following table provides expenditure on physical books by the British Library, public
libraries, university and higher education college libraries and the school library service
(although the there is no update for the latter). Unfortunately there are no statistics for
specialist libraries (i.e. libraries in commercial/industrial or non-commercial organisations)
and no up to date figures on school library service.

4 Number of book publishers

4.1 Number of ISBN registrations

3,657 UK publishers registering for their first ISBN prefix rose in 2012.

4.2 VAT-based book publishers by turnover bands and employment size

There were 2,115 book publishers registered for VAT as at 1 March 2012, according to
the Office for National Statistics. 1 845 of the publishers had revenues of less than 1m,
while 95 had turnover of over 5m. 1,580 had four or fewer employees and just 15 had
more than 250.

5 Book production

5.1 The number of titles

Nielsen Book recorded the total number of new and revised titles as being published in
the UK as 170,267 in 2012, down from 189,979 in 2011.

5.2 Most widely used formats

Paperbacks are still the most widely used formats, while ebooks for the period 2010-
2012 is as follows:

5.3 Translated literature in the UK and Ireland

According to, the number of translated titles in the UK and Ireland increased from 1,721
in 2000 to 2,207 in 2008.

6 Number of booksellers

6.1 Booksellers in membership of the Booksellers Association

The Bookseller Association of Great Britain and Ireland, which represents 95% of
booksellers in the UK and Ireland, had 3,655 members at the end of December 2011,
1,094 of these were independents. .

6.2 Number of VAT-based booksellers

There were 1,030 booksellers registered for VAT at 1 March 2012. Of these, 980 has
turnover of less than 1m, while 15 had turnover of over 5m. 720 had four or fewer
employees, while just 5 had more than 250.
