David Cameron visits Hammersmith to
support local elections
Alix Culbertson, getwestlondon
Thursday 15th May 2014
The Prime Minister with Cllr Charlie Dewhirst, Cllr Greg Smith
and local Conservative activists, backing the Conservatives’ 20%
reduction in Council"Tax over eight years.
The Prime Minister popped into Hammersmith today to support his
fellow Conservatives running in next week's local elections.
David Cameron swung by the Hammersmith and Fulham
Conservative headquarters in Greyhound Road this morning to show
he is fully behind the Tory's bid to stay in power in the borough when
people go to the polls next week.
He told getwestlondon: "I wanted to come to congratulate the
Conservative council here for providing four years of providing good
services while reducing council tax. They have reduced costs by
joining up with Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster for many
back office services which is a model for everybody else.
"It seems to me the Conservative councillors here are fighting their
campaign very well and have demonstrated a really important way of
helping people with the cost of living. I'm very proud of them.
"For example, they recently raised £88 million from high value council
housing which wasn't being used and are now pouring it back into
social housing to provide for more people."
Talking about Charing Cross Hospital, one of the most contentious
issues in the borough, he accused Hammersmith MP, Andy Slaughter
of not giving out the true facts about the hospital.
Mr Slaughter has relentlessly campaigned with the Save Our
Hospitals group, saying Charing Cross is to be closed which will risk
But Mr Cameron said: "Andy Slaughter is not giving the true facts.
Charing Cross will retain its A&E and services, it will still be a very
good hospital with a fantastic cancer care unit so I think the
Conservatives councillors are correct to write to local residents to put
the facts right."
The Prime Minister also spoke about the proposed third runway at
Heathrow, saying the commission set up will look at the various
proposals and the big decisions will be made in June 2015 following a
report by Sir Howard Davies who he trusts to make a fair decision.
He finished at the Conservative headquarters by saying: "People are
electing councillors for the next four years, we live in a democracy but
I hope people will choose to keep the Conservative council in place in
Joining the Prime Minster was Hammersmith MP hopeful, Charlie
Dewhirst and Council deputy leader, Greg Smith.
Mr Dewhirst said: "We've been fighting a very hard campaign to
ensure the Conservatives keep the borough because we've got so
much more to offer people. I'm going to be running for MP next year
but the focus at the moment is very much on the local elections next

Greg Hands MP has welcomed new figures showing that the number
of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in Chelsea & Fulham has
fallen by 395, over the last year alone. Since 2010, under this
Government, the number of local people on unemployment benefits
has fallen by 758 locally.
The figures also show that, nationally, employment (those in work) has
reached 30.43 million - up 283,000 this quarter, and up 1.59 million
since the election. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate has fallen to
6.8 per cent - down from 8% in May 2010.
Jobs have been created in Chelsea and Fulham in places like TNT
Post UK’s new delivery unit in The Old Gas Works, Parsons Green.
Last October, 75 new postmen were recruited from the local area
when the depot opened. The Fulham depot joined five other new TNT
Post delivery units in the South West London area, providing a new
delivery service to local residents and businesses. Over 500 new jobs
have been created by TNT since June 2013.
Greg said: “It’s great news there are now 395 fewer people on
unemployment benefit in Chelsea and Fulham over the last year.
That’s 395 people no longer relying on benefits to get by, with a more
secure, brighter future ahead of them.
“With the economy growing and jobs being created by businesses like
TNT in Parsons Green as just one example, and other local
businesses are setting up and expanding. It’s clear the Conservatives’
long-term economic plan is working, and the foundations of a broad
based recovery are in place. We need to keep working through the
plan, which is creating jobs, giving more to people who want to work
hard and get on the security of a regular pay packet they can bring
home to their families.”

Fulham Foodbank in ‘marathon’
Greg Hands MP is supporting the Hammersmith & Fulham Foodbank
in its latest fundraising effort. A volunteer for the foodbank is hoping
to raise £5,000 by running the Great Wall of China Marathon, and
Greg is calling on local residents to support his sponsorship drive.
George Bodkin, who is the son of one of the foodbank volunteers, and
who grew up in the area and now lives in Singapore, will run the
Marathon on Saturday 17th May. Amazingly, the marathon covers not
just the usual 26.2 miles, but takes place in soaring temperatures and
has 5,164 ‘man-size’ steps thrown in.
George Said: “I am running on 17th May - and I have decided to
support the Hammersmith and Fulham Foodbank because it does
unglamorous, but vital work, in the part of west London where I lived
before I moved to Singapore, and because my family supports it as
He added “If the Great Wall of China is one of the Seven Wonders of
the World, the eighth must surely be that I ever agreed to run a
marathon along it. Apparently it's not unusual for participants to crawl
on all fours for certain uphill sections - anyway........ I am going to
need a lot of motivation to get over the line.”
Greg Hands said: “I wish George the very best of luck in this
challenge. I have supported the foodbank since it’s opening in early
2010 and have visited to help out several times since. I would
encourage anyone who is able to do so, to support this noble and
H&F Foodbank is an independent charity providing nutritionally
balanced grocery parcels to people in difficulty. About a third of the
recipients are children. Last year HFFB gave enough food to prepare
up to 10 meals for 4,180 people, equivalent to 42,000 meals. HFFB
relies on unpaid volunteers. Money is needed to pay for food, its
storage and transportation. HFFB is part of Trussell Trust, you can
follow them on twitter at @hffoodbank.
People wishing to sponsor George in his marathon run can do so via
JustGiving here: www.justgiving.com/owner-
email/pleasesponsor/george-bodkin. You can continue to sponsor
even after the 17th May. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast
and secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell
them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your
money directly to the charity.

H&F Council calls for more Foster Carers
A campaign to recruit more foster carers in the local community is
being backed by Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council.
More than 10,000 children in London are living with foster families,
and research from The Fostering Network shows that another 1,000
new families are needed to be recruited by the end of the year to meet
the growing gap in demand.
The council, which is taking action to reverse the dangerous shortage
of foster carers in London, is calling for foster carers ahead of Foster
Care Fortnight, the UK’s biggest fostering campaign.
During Foster Care Fortnight, which will run from May 12 to 25,
specially trained frontline council staff will be wearing ‘Ask me about
fostering’ badges. These council workers have learnt the key facts and
contact details about fostering, and are happy to answer any
questions residents have about fostering in H&F, Kensington &
Chelsea or Westminster.
Kerri Newton, from the Tri-Borough Fostering and Adoption Service,
said: “Foster Care Fortnight is all about challenging the stereotypes of
who can and can’t foster, and encouraging people from our
community – who will have a range of skills and backgrounds – to get
in touch and change a child’s life.
“All we are looking for is motivated, enthusiastic and caring individuals
or couples to join our Tri-Borough team, and help us ensure that
together we make a positive contribution to local children in care.”
The London boroughs of H&F, Kensington & Chelsea and
Westminster share fostering services to help ensure that children in
their care are placed with the best possible families. It also means that
they can devote more resources to helping find foster carers for the
children who need them.
Victoria Francis, a foster carer backing the recruitment drive, revealed
that she decided to look after children in care to make a positive
contribution to society.
She said: “It is about helping the children grow and develop as young
men and women, and having the self-confidence and courage to face
their fears. They may have had a difficult start in life, but that doesn’t
have to be the final outcome.”
Over the next few months the Tri-Borough fostering service is holding
information evenings for potential new foster carers in Hammersmith
and Kensington town halls as well as Westminster City Hall. For more
information please contact 0800 169 3497 or email@example.com.
