About this book...

Why Readers? My students are still learning the alphabet.
successintesl readers have been used with outstanding success in literacy classes in which half of the students were not literate in their first language. They work because students are using meaningful language about adult topics. They learn to sight-read highfrequency words like 'the' and 'he'. They learn directionality of print. They learn to sound out words using text they know. Students are especially proud of being able to read their first book.

Why Canadian Holidays?
Students connect with their new community by learning about Canadian customs.

Why Ethnic Festivals?
Good teaching starts with what the students know. Teaching ethnic holidays both validates the students and demonstrates that Canada is a multicultural, multi-faith country. It also helps students adjust to life here by relieving some of the isolation newcomers can typically feel, especially at holiday time.

No time? Then just talk about the holiday with the big pictures and do a card exchange.

How about Multi-Level?
The content-based approach used here is ideal with multi-level. Remember to go from speaking to writing. Pair students for reading activities. Encourage students to help their partners with writing as necessary. Think of your class as a family, where "older" members help the "younger" ones.

Our Holiday is Different!
To the best of our ability, we have tried to give an accurate portrayal of general customs for each holiday or festival, but there are variations between regions and even families. We have necessarily had to simplify for the level. We welcome your input however!

Holidays for Literacy (& Low 1)

Holidays
Holidays are roughly arranged by date, but some dates vary considerably. Check the December edition of the Westcoast Reader for a calendar of holiday dates. It is generally better to teach about the holiday before it occurs: i.e., teach about Canada Day in June and BC Day in July. 1-32 33-44 45-80 81-110 111-136 137-167 168-201 202-229 230-268 269-303 304-336 337-381 382-416 417-449 450-478 479-513 514-529 530-722 Lunar New Year (China, Korea, Vietnam) (date varies: see p. 1) Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14th) Nah Rooz (Persian New Year : Iran and Afghanistan) (March 20, 21 or 22) Easter (date varies) (secular and religious holiday) Vaisakhi (April 14th) Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May) Victoria Day (last Monday on or before May 24) Father’s Day (the third Sunday in June) Canada Day (July 1st) BC Day (first Monday in August) Ramadan (date varies; one month of fasting followed by holiday “Eid”) Thanksgiving Day (the second Monday in October) Diwali (on new moon between October 13th and November 14th) Halloween (Oct. 31st) Remembrance Day (Nov. 11th) Christmas (Dec. 25th, but really the activities start about 3 weeks before) Days/Months/Seasons Big Pictures

Phonics: Words with C (circle and write): "Candy Goes Shopping"

Before giving out the handout, talk about the story on the overhead by covering the text and only showing the pictures. Start by uncovering the family pictures. Elicit and choral who each is (i.e., son, daughter, and husband). Ask what Candy is doing and elicit what she buys for each person in her family.
508 509-510 511 512 513 Crossword Christmas cards  We Wish You a Merry Christmas  Jingle Bells Sample Field Trip Worksheet

Students need to know ahead of time exactly where they are going, and when they will be back. Go over the route for several days ahead of time, using transit maps and an expanded map of the route. As a follow-up, give the cut-up, scrambled steps (without numbers) and have the students work in pairs to order. Bring a camera and take pictures of each step (meeting at the school, getting on and off the bus, etc.). Print the pictures in black and white on regular paper and use them to review the trip. Make a class book that each student can keep with one picture per page (similar to the holiday readers in this binder, but using real photos).
Extra Activities 1. Potluck party. 2. Decorate your class. Have your students make the decorations in class, such as snowflakes (fold paper and then cut out diamonds and slits to make a ‘snowflake’). Hang them from the ceiling with thread. 3. Secret Santa: set a limit such as $2. Take them on a field trip to your local Thrift Store or Dollar Store to do their shopping. 4. Field Trip to See Christmas Lights and Displays. Take your class out to the nearest shopping centre. Before going, spend time going over the route, times, etc. Make a worksheet on which they check the things they see or write down store hours and prices for some common items. 5. Card Exchange. Do a Christmas card exchange not only within your class but also between classes. This makes a great warmer to a multi-class potluck.
