Quilting Classes Offered

At Bradford Public Library
Quilting classes will be held at the Bradford Public Library again
this summer. The classes are for beginners or advanced quilters.
Everyone must pre-register as there is limited space. Hope to see you
there!
PetAL PLAy - If you love flowers but have no luck growing
them you might want to try creating them with the Appli-bond
method. You use two or more fabrics that are fused together with
HeatnBond UltraHold. The stiffened appliqué pieces are cut out and
attached in the center with embroidery stitches to create three-dimensional flowers. This class will meet Wednesdays, June 11 and 18,
from 6:30-8:30 p.m. You must pre-register at the library before the
first class and get your supply list. Also, every student is required to
purchase the book. It is available on Amazon.
ShAded 9 PAtCh - The Shaded 9 Patch is a good block for
the beginner or advanced machine quilter. Using light and dark fabrics, the blocks are a lot like Log Cabin blocks and can be set together
as such. No two students’ quilts will look the same because everyone
chooses their own setting design. The block consists of 3-1/2” squares
and half-square triangles. This quilt will go together quickly and will
look great hand- or machine-quilted. The class will meet on Wednesdays, July 9, 16, 23, and 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. You must pre-register before the first class and pick up your supply list at the library.
The class is limited to eight students, so register as soon as possible.

sharing Memories of High school
One year ago, I celebrated my 50th class alumni graduation from Bradford High School.
This year, I joined my wife, Ginger, in celebrating her 50th class alumni graduation from the same school.
I like to call it our 50th double header.
Being just one year apart, it was nice knowing classmates from both years. It made it more pleasing, than
some spouses knowing no one.
Also, for two consecutive years I’ve had the honor and privilege of being the Master of Ceremonies for this
annual event.

Valley Farewells

The Bradford Alumni Banquet every year has special meaning for both Ginger and me. Why? Because this
was the first official date the two of us fell in love and dated for the first time.

beaver, robert e., 90 - Formerly of Covington, most recently of Troy. Died Saturday,
May 10, at Caldwell House, Troy.
brandt, helen e., 92 - A resident of Piqua. Died Thursday, May 8, at Upper Valley Medical Center, Troy.
farling, jack d., 83 - A resident of Pleasant Hill. Died Saturday, May 10, in Covington.

Every year we try to attend this annual event, to rekindle our memories and the fun we had in school.
It’s also special to see classmates, friends of other classes, and friends we’ve known for more than 50 years.
Ginger’s class graduated with 30 students. On Saturday, they had 19 classmates join in their 50th anniversary.
Everyone basically said the same thing; “I can’t believe we’ve been out of high school for 50 years.”
For me, the highlight of this year’s celebration was the time spent after the banquet, when most of the class
met at Larry and Diana Beck’s home. Most of us gathered around 8 p.m. and we were still going strong by 1
a.m.
I had forgotten a lot of the stories that most of the men told, but when they finished, just about everyone had
something to add, or to simply say, “I didn’t know that!”
If I was going to pick the story of the night, it was the one about two of the boys deciding they were going to
California at the intermission of their senior class play. Oh, to be young and restless again.

‘Fizz, Boom... Read!
Spark a Reaction!’
Theme of BPL’s Summer
Reading Program
Bradford Public Library has very special plans for area children,
teens, and adults over the next few months! We have plans in motion
that have to do with the very popular S.T.E.M. programming (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math).
The first day of sign-ups was Saturday, May 10, and you can continue to sign up if you are between 0-99 years of age. You can begin
reading for your Summer Reading Program as soon as we have your
official signed sheet. Prizes are very special and chosen by staff librarians. Some of the items include: Louvre Sunglasses, train whistles,
an official “Paul K. Guillow 55 Jetstream Balsa Wood Glider Plane,”
a Bottle Rocket Trip, and for teens: Earbuds, flashdrives, and I-Tune
gift cards.
The drawing for the major Summer Reading Club prizes will be
held at the annual Fishing Derby, sponsored by Stillwater Bass Club,
Miami County Park District, and the library, on Saturday, Aug. 2. Each
child will receive one chance for every reading sheet they turn in and
they must be present to win. The adult prize drawing will take place
Monday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m.
We are all “children at heart” and we love to make and create
things! The library is pleased to present our portable “MakerSpace”
which has been funded by the Miami County Foundation and the Covington Eagles Order 3998. We have a number of craft projects that are
integrated within the “Fizz, Boom…Read” program in the areas of
textiles, jewelry making, science experiments, working with different
digital devices, and many others where our MakerSpace will come in
handy. It will hold the children, teen and adult projects and also the
tools needed to finish the projects.
Sign-ups for the many SRC activities will begin Tuesday, May 27.
Slots will fill up quickly in many of the categories, so be here early
(11 a.m.) to get your name registered for events and activities.
We will be going on field trips which are developmentally appropriate for different age groups. Preschool through those going into second grade will be to the Bradford Ohio Railroad Museum’s brand-new
Interactive Children’s Area. Those going into 3rd through 5th grade
next year will go to an Interactive Museum, and teens will be going
to the United States Air Force Museum. These two will be day trips.
There will also be book clubs for ages 4 thru Grade 12.

“FARM TO FACTORY - WE CAN HELP”

letter to the editor
A gentleman I met by chance at a local eatery, upon hearing I’ve
spent decades writing “Letters to the Editor,” hopefully, to save historic
places, worthwhile causes and, most of all, Mother Nature, asked me
to write a letter for him concerning the West Milton Dam.
Since I don’t “ghost write” I set about asking who, what, why,
when, where and, in addition, what are the consequences of action for
either side. Only then could I write a letter on the issue speaking for
myself.
Time is of the essence for the West Milton Dam, the historic, abandoned hydro-electric plant, and the millpond scheduled for obliteration
this year! A man from the State said it will be taken out before fall,
but you will be given one more chance to speak. The last opportunity
to speak ended in October 2013. I was told only 15 or 20 responded.
Did you fail to act, have you acquiesced, or, like me, were you simply
unaware?
Please, ask questions and Listen now. With an open
mind, weigh the options. I’ve heard several. If the dam goes, it is gone
forever. What will clearing the river possibly bring? Do you want that?
I speak for Mother Nature, for saving your scarce natural habitat,
your 100 years in the making eco-system in and around the pond, the
flora and fauna on the ridge and at the riverside, all doing Mother Nature’s cleaning of our polluted atmosphere. I’m fascinated by the little
spring-fed streams crossing your village.
I am blessed to live in your quaint, exceptional village. Please consider your treasure while you may.
Thank You, Respectfully,
Mary Lou Hoening, West Milton
