JOB TITLE Research Advisor

DEPARTMENT Research Funds

REPORTING TO Associate Medical Director for Research (Research Funds
Manager in his absence)

Purpose of the Job
• To provide scientific advice and support for the Research Funds Department
• To liaise with grant applicants and awardees over scientific issues and to collate and
communicate metrics of outputs from BHF funded research, both within the BHF and
externally
• There will be two Research Advisers. Each will take a lead on issues related to non
clinical and clinical research respectively.

Key Responsibilities
• Advise potential grant applicants on suitability of application approach and
appropriateness of subject matter
• Be familiar with all grant applications (and current awards) in committee of
responsibility
• At application stage, allocate national and international reviewers (with aid of the
Grants Management System and Associate Medical Director)
• At committee stage, take notes of any scientific issues discussed in committee
• At post-committee stage, liaise with the Research Funds Officers to provide accurate
scientific feedback to applicants and/or internal use
• Liaise with the Science Communications team post-award and attend regular internal
grant publicity meetings
• Check on outcomes for all awards in area of responsibility on a regular basis, to
enable an outcome portfolio to be built up for all awards
• Assist with planning and attending when required, BHF Chair site visits, REA
Synergy meetings and site visits, Fellows’ days, scientific workshops and compile
draft reports

Communication
• Engage positively and professionally with all BHF departments and the external
community to promote the work of the Research Funds Department
• Represent BHF on external committees with other partner charities and funders
• Represent BHF at relevant scientific meetings e.g. BSC annual conference
• Represent the department at relevant meetings with trustees and potential donors
• Liaise with the Deputy Research Funds Manager over development of improved
functionality of the grants management system

Administration
• Carry out administrative duties as required
• Maintain and develop office systems, records and archive
• Contribute to the improvement and development of the department
• Duties as required by the Associate Medical Director and Research Funds Manager

= = = Other • One Research Advisor to take responsibility for working with external partners/funders to resolve joint funding issues for clinical awards involving NIHR • Second Research Advisor to take responsibility for ensuring BHF funded trials are logged with the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) = = = PERSON SPECIFICATION = JOB TITLE Research Advisor DEPARTMENT Research Funds REPORTING TO Associate Medical Director for Research (Research Funds Manager in his absence) Experience Required • Demonstrable postdoctoral research experience • Hands-on biomedical research experience • Experience developing website content is advantageous • Experience in an interdisciplinary environment in which basic. translational and clinical research take place together is advantageous Knowledge/ Training or • PhD (or equivalent) in any aspect of biomedical science Qualifications Required • Sound understanding of the legislative and research governance environment and research career progression • Experience and good working knowledge of the use of research databases. such as PubMed and PubMedCentral Skills/Personal • To be an efficient and proactive team member Attributes Required • To promote collaborative involvement • Sound IT skills including MS Office and databases • Strong verbal and written communication skills • Ability to deliver sustainable results in a timely way • To push for the best at all times • To continue to develop in the role • Understand and care about the cause of the BHF .
