In 1980, near the Danube River , in the Hinova region, Mehedinți County, not far from the
Drobeta-Turnu Severin municipality, archaeologists discovered the largest autochthonous
treasure in Romania , consisting of over nine thousand six hundred thirty-nine gold pieces
weighing approximately five kg and dating from the second century BC. The treasure consists of
a tiara, several bracelets, sleeves and rings, and also a necklace containing hundreds of pieces
and thousands of small beads of rhombohedral shape made of gold foil.

Surprisingly, Constantin Brâncuşi will name the rhombohedral elements of the Endless Column
(in Romanian: Coloana fără sfârşit) after the beads. Inspired by the discovery, he envisions the
Column as a necklace of eternity and as a column uniting earth to heaven. The rhombehedral
shape found in the traditional house porch pillar is without a doubt another source of inspiration
for Brâncuşi. He uses this porch pillar model and projects it in his sculpture as a universal pillar.

The link between Brâncuşi’s sculpture and the visions of Antiquity makes of this funeral
monument a monument of primordial tradition as well. The Endless Column is indeed a column
of infinity, a cosmic pillar, a symbol of dignity and human greatness, a symbol of eternity, a
sacred symbol of the being. Brâncuşi accomplishes a huge restoration of tradition and brings
the medieval man and the Edenic man to an encounter with the Pauline man.

The Column germinates from a single element – the “seed”, which represents the shape of the
hourglass found in the stone stools from the Chairs Alley ( in Romanian:
Aleea Scaunelor - another monument of Brancusi ’s sculpture assembly).

Brâncuşi said that the Column is ascending from a blade of grass.

The Column , as he enjoyed calling it, is the soul itself – the pulse of life, which can be felt not
only in this reiterative, infinite rhombohedral element, but also in the lisp of the leafs and the
swaying of the flowers in the park. It is the Column of the world’s infinity and of God’s, whose
time can only be measured through man’s breaths. It is the Column of the sun, the Column of
light - the liberating soul-uplifting flow.

From the depths of the archetype comes forth the relevance of mythological time, ancestral
time, symbolic time, which the primordial tradition carries within.

The Endless Column is a flowering of life’s quintessence, of the primordial ancient wisdom and
of our spiritual life. It is a column of eternal gratitude and of perpetual remembrance of the
freedom fighters, a column of the ancestry which imbues the wisdom of the Carpathian-BalkanMediterranean space, and a column of man’s history and of his humanity. In this context, it is a
column of humaneness.

Having arrived in Târgu Jiu from Paris at the request of the Women’s League in Gorj, Brâncuşi
comes with the idea of implementing this rhomboedral element as an obelisk in the monument
that he has been requested to build. He asks for total creative freedom and assembles the
monument on the site of the old hay fair.

As it happens, the young engineer Ștefan Georgescu Gorjan, son of Ion Georgescu
Gorjan, the old protector of Brâncuşi during his studies in the country, is the assistant to the
director of the Central Workshop in Resiţa , where the Endless Column is to be cast in iron and

For the pedestal of the Column, Brâncuşi, together with the carpenter foreman CAROL FLISEC,
prepares a lime wood module, like the statue of a man, with a height of 180 centimeters , the
high side being 90 centimeters and the short one, 45 centimeters . The Column will be built to a
height of 29.35 meters . It consists of 15 stacked octahedral modules, whose top and bottom
halves, when joined, form an open chain structure uniting the sky to the earth.

As early as 1907, Brâncuşi had “a project for a column which once enhanced could sustain the
sky”. This project will be implemented technically by the engineer Ștefan Georgescu Gorjan,
based on resistance calculations made by engineer Nicolae Hasnaș. An entire team of the
Central Workshop is dedicated to the exceptional engineering project. Among the workers are
Romanians, Hungarians, Germans and Jews.

This process is coordinated by the foreman chief Ion Romoan. are to be displayed along the steel axis. finally. The elements of the Column are rasped on the joints and then grouted with metallic dust. Ultimately.the octahedral elements. The Women’s League in Gorj persuades the Government to allocate significant funds and. After the assembly. over ten million lei are committed. like beads on a string.The beads . The sum is to cover the cost of the entire project and also the enhancement of the old street. he is the only one capable of creating a monument in memoriam of the heroes of the Jiu River . when sculptor Milița Pătrașcu. Each module is assembled with the help of wooden scaffolding and some handspikes and pulleys. eventually accepts the proposal. Grigore Săftoiu. with a large square base of 4. They are then pulled along the steel axis. For resistance. In the concrete block a special structure – a crossed gantry of 3 meters – is inserted. The sculptor. a team led by the foreman Augustin Perini lays the foundation of the monument in the shape of a truncated pyramid. In her opinion. the Column is transported module by module to Târgu Jiu with a specially constructed iron cart carried along two-car tracks. The history of the construction of this monument begins in1934. In October 1937. Corrosion protection of the steel is achieved with a minimum of three layers of leadbased paint. The angle profiles and steel plates are specially laminated with increased resistance at Reșița. . denies her own competence and invokes the name of her master Brâncuși. Constantin Brâncuși is present and is assumed to be the person sitting in the park near the Column wearing a grey coat and fedora. including compensation for the demolition of some buildings. Their lateral displacement is secured with thin metallic wedges. starting from east to west. Madam Arethia Tãtărăscu visits the sculptor in Paris and carries out a long conversation with him. who is asked by Arethia Tãtărăscu to build it. who has been wishing for a long time to create something significant in Gorj. the interior of the module at the base of the construction is also cemented. Seventy-five cubic meters of concrete is poured. At the assembly of the first two modules. The Heroes’ Path (in Romanian: Calea Eroilor) is to transect the town in two halves. they are sandblasted and coated using a thermal brass spraying process. which is fixed to the base of the block with rag bolts of 2 meters .5 meters and a depth of 5 meters. whose kernel is made of a square cross section. at a distance of 1759 meters .

Bounded by thirty stools. . The upper portion of the portal looks like a hope chest and is projected like a triumphal arch of the young who have gone to war. and in the chirping of birds. he imagines a complex plan consisting of a meditation table. the path represents the corresponding ritual in an Orthodox funeral. like the stone tables in the front of traditional house porches. in the rustling of willow branches and wild grass. Portal of Great Silence – The Gate of the Kiss. prolonging the symbol in the hourglass chairs.Initially. round. the murmur of their thoughts is to be heard in the rippling of water.a place of spiritual victory and a place of committing to the Holy Communion. merging with death. the funeral convoy walks on the path to Saints Peter and Paul Church (in Romanian: Biserica Sfinţii Petru si Pavel) for the last church service and passes through a portal. Form 3 It is the path of heroes’ souls who reach the church . each consisting of three hourglass stools on each side. It is a triumph of life against death. The path is “watched over” by five groups of chairs.a Jacob’s ladder on which they will climb to heaven. From the church they will proceed to the funeral pillar . Near the gate two simple benches are placed to symbolize the contemplation before The Last Judgment. Surrounded by twelve chairs. which depicts the ritual of The Last Supper. a path of liberation. but also the place from which the heroes depart towards the high path. He envisions a table consisting of two millstones. a number which represents the symbol of a sacred meditation. the table embodies the capsule of time that flows like the water of the Jiu River . the millstone symbolizing time and destiny. It is a table of the the Holy Communion. right on the sit where battles had been fought for the town’s safety. Brâncuși comes with the idea of creating the Endless Column before the other monuments. of eternal life. At this table the heroes introspect. From the table of remembrance. But during his meditations on the bank of the Jiu River .

Brâncuși searches everywhere and for a long time for the stone from which the table. accompanied by his entourage. For the stools on the Chairs Alley. with a length of 5. the family table. at Viștea. choosing at last the limestone he finds in Transylvania . the shades table. the chairs.15 meters and a thickness of 43 centimeters and of a base in travertine brought from Câmpu-Lung. Around the table are placed twelve hourglass chairs and another thirty chairs watch over an alley of time which leads to the gate between. wants to climb down the scaffolding and grate the prince. prince Mihai of Hohenzolern arrives. the gate of death’s kiss that the soldiers receive. Brâncuși will develop in the Public Garden of the city. Brâncuși will choose this sit to build a table of celebration – the table of silence. He searches the country’s quarries. the table of The Last Supper. a structural complex of limestone brought from Banpotoc. in the Public Garden pre-existed few sculptural works such as this one which was destroyed by communists in 1944. solemnly. The young stone sculptor Ion Alexandrescu. in Hundoara County . but the sculptor stops him: “keep working!” . Of course. which has a diameter of 2 meters with a thickness of 45 centimeters . In that summer. Mircea Eliade says that: “The Gate watches over the marriage. Due to economical reasons. the round table.” In 1938. near Hunedoara. the future king. near Cluj and at Banpotoc. the gate and the two benches will be made.45 meters . Brâncuşi chooses identical dimensions: 55 centimeters height with a square side of 45 centimeters .69 meters . and under the gate the dead went. he chooses the limestone from Banpotoc. and the traditional table. on the bank of the Jiu River . with a diameter of 2. The Table of Silence (in Romanian: Masa Tăcerii) consists of a stone table top in travertine brought from Banpotoc. at the sit of the construction. after the construction of the Endless Column.13 meters . On the stanchions which sustain the upper section is graven the symbol of kiss. The Gate of The Kiss (in Romanian: Poarta Sărutului) has a height of 5. and the props have the side of 1. the table of the starving. each having a diameter of 45 centimeters and a height of 55 centimeters . who helps Brâncuşi. The table is surrounded by twelve stone chairs with round seat. the apostles’ table. to the one's last resting place.

the prevailing sentiment of the time incites the Târgu-Jiu City Council to request to the Committee of Arts the demolition of the Endless Column. under Bolshevik occupation.Year 1938 . can be used in other . his letter. like all the others European artists. In the letter. he is incriminated and labeled an enemy of the regime. In the document. Form 4 Inaugurated in 1938. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… In 1949. it is completely abandoned and deteriorates. is thrown in the trash. through the materials resulting from its demolition. ……………………………………………………………………………………………… Year 1951: The Romanian Academy shows its contempt for the works of Brâncuși. according to this unpublished document. And on March 7. Attacks against the sculptor are permitted. the Communists make a request: “Taking into account the fact that this Column. the work of Brâncuși is called a “metallic column embed in a concrete base without any aesthetics”. At the initiative of George Oprescu and Mihail Sadoveanu. maybe as a warning against the war that is imminent. through which he donates his works from the Parisian Workshop to the Romanian State . 1951. Brâncuși. decadent and bourgeois. Therefore. After the war. feels the dawn of war and raises the monument in Târgu Jiu as a memorial for the fallen of World War One and as a protest against the war which is to follow. is reckoned by Joseph Goebels as “degenerate”. Barlach and Lehbruch. the first attempt of the Communists to demolish the Endless Column takes place. the same City Council of Târgu Jiu sends a letter to the Local Industry and Utility Department (today’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) to demand approval to demolish the Column . the Heroes’ Path is soon considered valueless.the year when the Nazi regime is at its apogee in Europe and when in Germany the art of Brâncuși and of his apprentices. Consequently.

The miners come out of the shift and drink brandy there to clean their throats. another attempt to demolish the Endless Column takes place. In the park. Gvasniewschi. and parceled it out to the citizens in exchange for expropriated lands from the neighborhood situated to the south of the tubular area. The Communist Party finds out about this deed and the activists are required to take them out of the river. . However. This time. On November 21. appropriated these lots and parceled out this land to citizens for building. But the tavern doesn’t have sanitation installed and the people. This action produces nothing but contempt for the Assembly. the Târgu-Jiu City Council requests approval from the competent authorities to parcel out the park area where the Column is placed for individual housing. in a report prepared by the Section of Architecture and Systematization of the Regional City Council of Craiova. In the same year. touched by spirits. In their valiant efforts. archival documents disclose the fact that the Târgu-Jiu City Council legally abolished the park area of the Column. relieve themselves on the sculptures. Tănăsie Lolescu from Hobiţa is given approval to demolish the Column . But in 1953. please give us the rightful approval to demolish it. In that dark decade. near the monuments. signed by the engineer T. a group of nomads is given permission by the authorities to set up their tents in the area of the Endless Column. a tavern is established. Contradictions and personal conflicts between the Communists from Gorj and those from Craiova save the Column’s Park from being parceled out. the request is not approved by the State Committee for City Building and Architecture.urban public works indispensable for the city. Some party activists even throw two chairs into the waters of the Jiu River .” The reason why the Column hasn’t been demolished is unknown. 1956. The miners organize competitions and challenge themselves to move the chairs as far as they can from the Sculptural Ensemble. the following: “More critical is the fact that the Târgu-Jiu City Council abolished the park area of the Endless Column. and parceled it out to the citizens in exchange for expropriated lands from the neighborhood situated to the south of the tubular area.” The severity lies in the fact that the City Council didn’t take into account the previous decree through which the abolishment of the park was forbidden. Fortunately. The world does not understand the purpose of the artistic pieces and the sculptures are called stones. some of the miners drop and chip them.

to eradicate the National Cultural Complex „Constantin Brâncuşi”. whose chief adviser he was. the president of Romania arrives in Târgu Jiu accompanied by the senator Vasile Văcaru. the monuments are left without protection. and to dismiss from the function of chief adviser of the Inspectorate for Culture in Gorj. Viorel Mărgineanu. he will commence preparations for the restoration of the assembly. During the symposium in Targu Jiu. 1996 a new accident is planned. On October 3. it is decided to demolish the Endless Column. Nicolae Diaconu. The accident accelerates the preparations for beginning the restoration work and the Commission of Historical Monuments approves urgently the project Varia. So.
