AUXILIARY WINDING

The auxiliary winding is another winding inside the stator slots. It's eletrially
inde!endent "ro# the #ain stator winding and its "untion is to su!!ly an inde!endent
soure o" !ower to the A$R "or a onstant %oltage.
There are two &ig ad%antages when a generator is su!!lied with the aux winding'
() The %oltage is onstant during a short iruit' In a generator without the aux winding
the A$R is ta*ing !ower "ro# the #ain ter#inals. When you ha%e a short iruit on the
#ain ter#inals o" the generator the A$R is not a&le to get !ower "ro# the #ain ter#inal.
+or this reason the A$R doesn,t wor* and the exitation syste# is de-!owered. The
generator swithes o"" and you are not a&le to reogni.e that there is a short iruit on the
generator ter#inals. I" you want to &e sure to reogni.e that there is a short iruit/ the
generator should &e a&le to su!!ly during a short iruit/ a short iruit urrent e0ual at
least 1 ti#es the no#inal urrent. You an use eletroni de%ies onneted to the A$R
2li*e the $ario#! de%ie in the 345 series) or the aux winding. When you use an
eletroni de%ie there is always the !ossi&ility that the eletroni de%ie doesn't wor*
and there is also a little delay &e"ore its ati%ation. With the aux winding you don't ha%e
these !ro&le#s' the %oltage is si#!ly always the sa#e. With a onstant %oltage su!!lied
to the A$R you ha%e a short iruit urrent e0ual 1 ti#es the no#inal urrent.
6) The %oltage is onstant during a transient !hase' In a generator without the aux
winding the A$R is ta*ing !ower "ro# the #ain ter#inals. When you ha%e a load
suddenly a!!lied to the generator the %oltage o" the generator dereases to a %alue
ty!ially e0ual to 47 - 879 o" the no#inal %alue 2de!ending on the %alue o" this load).
This %oltage dro! de!ends only on the eletro#agneti harateristis o" the generator
and doesn't de!end on the way to su!!ly !ower to the A$R 2"ro# the #ain ter#inals or
"ro# the aux winding). 5ut a generator with the aux winding is &etter a"ter the "irst !hase
when the %oltage is less than the no#inal %alue/ the %oltage that the A$R is ta*ing "ro#
the aux winding is e0ual to the no#inal %alue/ also i" in the #ain ter#inals there is a
redued %alue. :n a generator without aux winding/ the A$R is ta*ing a %oltage that is
less than the no#inal %alue; +or this reason in the generator without aux winding <ust
when the A$R needs #ore !ower &eause it has to inrease the %oltage to the no#inal
%alue/ it is ta*ing less !ower &eause the %oltage is less than the no#inal %alue. :n a
generator with aux winding the %oltage is e0ual to the no#inal %alue also in this situation
so the A$R an wor* &etter than without aux winding. +or this reason the transient
&eha%ior o" a generator with aux winding is &etter &eause the reation o" the A$R is
stronger. In the end/ the generator is a&le to o#e &a* to the no#inal %alue o" the
%oltage in a !eriod o" ti#e shorter than a generator without aux winding or on the other
hand you an a!!ly a &igger load with the sa#e !eriod o" ti#e o" redued %oltage.
