arnivals, county fairs and
street festivals can make
for fun family outings.
The nice weather just beckons
people outdoors, and weekend
after weekend resourceful carni-
val goers can probably find a fair
nearby. But revelers need to make
sure their experiences are as
safe as they are fun.
The Outdoor Amusement
Business Association estimates
500 million guests visit carnivals,
fairs and festivals each year. More
than half of them participate in
mobile amusement rides, among
other recreational
pursuits. Such pursuits can not
only be fun, but they also can be
dangerous, especially for young
children. As a result, parents tak-
ing their kids along to enjoy this
wholesome fun should con-
sider the following precau-
tions.
•Be prepared. Research the
fair or carnival and know
what to expect when you
arrive. How big is it? What
are the types of attractions
and what vendors will be
included? What is the parking
situation? Are strollers
allowed? Knowing what to
expect can make the occasion
a little less stressful. If your
child is old enough to under-
stand, explain what the fair
entails and how it can be
crowded and noisy.
•Dress for the weather. It is
important to wear sturdy, com-
fortable footwear. Many carnivals
are set up in fields or empty park-
ing lots. There will be a lot of

J
im rushed home after
leaving the hospital where
his mother just endured a
non-emergency heart valve
replacement procedure, after
which, the surgeon placed
Martha in the hands of the
after surgery cardiac care
physicians. This team of doc-
tors did not want the new
valve to be over-stressed, so
they gave Martha medication
to slow-down her heart rate.
As it turned out, they slowed
it down so much and so fast
that Martha died and they
couldn’t bring her back.
Martha was 77 years old.
Jim, the eldest brother of
4 children, was distraught to
say the least, turning next to
sorrow then to anger, Jim
called me from the funeral
home to tell me this story,
cursing and threatening to sue
the doctors for killing his
mother. I was Martha’s and
her late husband Bob’s finan-
cial advisor for over 20 years
and adored these wonderful
people and they felt the same
way about me. I was horrified
when Jim called me with the
devastating news that Martha,
my friend, would be my client
no more. What Jim said to me
next made an indelible
impression.
Early in my career, some
33 years ago, I instructed my
clients to list me in their little
black book, you know the one
I am talking about, their
address and phone book. I
told Martha to list me under
“F” for Financial and under
“L” for life insurance and
again under “I” for income.
Martha and Bob were loyal
and faithful clients who fol-
lowed my suggestions and rec-
ommendations to the letter.
Her calendar and appoint-
ment book had my name and
number in all of the places I
told her to place it, “just in
case”. Now Martha was gone
and the life insurance claim
forms needed to be completed
and filed. The lawyer wanted
to charge the family thousands
of dollars to probate the
estate. Stopping that, I told
Jim it would be my honor and
obligation to help him
through the process with no
cost whatsoever! And that is
exactly what we did.
Jim explained that his
mother had the ultimate trust
in me for she left multiple
notes to him so that it would
be impossible to overlook just
one. Martha left more than a
dozen “Little Yellow Sticky”
post-it notes anywhere Jim
would look in her house for
anything important. She
posted those “Little Yellow
Sticky’s” all over the house.
One on her night stand and
one more in the night stand
top drawer. There was a L.Y.S.
in the bathroom and another
on and in her strong box. One
more was found in the car
glove box too. There was a
Little Yellow Sticky on the
refrigerator and one more in
the basement by Bob’s tools.
Jim told me that he found 13
Little Yellow Sticky’s in total.
I was warmed and
enthused that Martha listened
to me and performed to per-
fection. You see that each and
every L.Y.S. was really a
L.O.I., Letter of Instruction,
written to Jimmy, her eldest
and geographically closest son.
Her L.Y.S.-L.O.I.’s all deliv-
ered identically the same mes-
sage.
“Jimmy – if you’re read-
ing this, I must be incapacitat-
ed or dead. Call Mark
Charnet for help and guidance
immediately, his number is:
973-831-4424.
And that is exactly what
Jim did. I was there to help
him when his head was filled
with emotion, sorrow and
remorse, confused further by
the funeral obligations. Jim
was in need of a financial
friend on retainer at no cost
for life, just like his mother

•Family Promise of Passaic County is
had, and I was there for her
and Bob and now Jim the son
and Jim’s children as well.
Let me pause to ask you a
few questions. Do you have a
financial friend on retainer at
no cost for life? Do you have a
name to put on your own
Little Yellow Sticky-Letter of
Instruction to be there to help
your spouse and or kids after
you’re incapacitated or gone?
Do you have ample life insur-
ance as Martha did to pay all
of her taxes, obligations and
funeral related expenses and
more? Do your kids have a
relationship with your finan-
cial advisor or retirement and
estate planning specialist?
Don’t you think it’s about
time that you answer all of
these questions, yes? Well, I
do and would like to be the
name on your L.Y.S-L.O.I. like
so many of your neighbors.
For 33 years, people have been
putting my name on their
L.Y.S.-L.O.I. after we’ve
developed a tremendous
financial advisor/client rela-
tionship. I couldn’t be more
proud of my American
Prosperity Group family of
clients as they have taken the
steps to “Maximize their

ing, protecting and perpetuat-

n a study that examined
the impact of sweet and
sour candy on teeth,
researchers tested four brands
of candy that are sweet and
sour: Jolly Rancher, Life
Savers, Mike and Ike, and
Twizzlers.
Upon examination with
microscopes, the researchers
noted that the teeth exposed
to the sour candies had signif-
icant softer enamel than the
teeth exposed to the sweet
ones. The largest erosion in
enamel was seen with the sour
Jolly Ranchers.
According to the
researchers, sour candies have
high levels of citric, fumaric
and malic acids. The first
comes from citrus fruits and
juices, and is common in a
number of real foods and
candy. Fumaric and malic
acids are a bit more hidden,
used not only to make candy
sour but also as additives in
processed foods.
The Minnesota Dental
Association launched a cam-
paign called “The Power of
Sour on Your Teeth” to
increase awareness of this new
and emerging concern.

walking, and you want to be
sure you are comfortable.
Check the weather before
going and dress for the tem-
perature. Wear hats to shield
your faces from the sun and
lather on plenty of sunblock
for protection. Avoid wearing
any dangling clothes and jew-
elry. Tie back long hair to
reduce your risk of accidents
on rides.
•Identify security guards or a
security kiosk upon entering.
Let children know where safe-
ty personnel are stationed.
Establish a meet-up point that
is very conspicuous should
anyone get separated from the
group. This central location
will be checked first and
should be easily identifiable
for young children. Instruct
the child to stay there until
you find him or her.
•Put your mobile phone num-
ber in your child’s pocket. Put
your name or “Mom/Dad” on
a sheet of paper with a contact
number and put it in your son
or daughter’s pocket. Should
he or she get lost, the child
can approach a security guard
and give that person your
phone number.
•Take a current photo of the
kids. Use your smartphone or
camera to snap a picture of
your children when you arrive
at the event. This way you
will have a method of helping
others identify them should
they get lost.
•Observe the rides in
advance. Watch rides before
you get in line to try them out.
Figure out if it is appropriate
for a child and acclimate any-
one who is nervous. Carnival
rides often have a “you must
be this tall to ride” sign at
their entrance gates.
•Look for inspection stickers.
Carnival rides often have to
be inspected for safety. If the
ride doesn’t have a current
inspection sticker, don’t ride
it.
•Stay hydrated. Pack plenty
of bottled water for the day.
Fairs make a lot of money on
concession sales, and buying
beverages all day can get
expensive. Dehydration is
common when spending
hours outdoors in warm
weather. It can make a person
dizzy and feeling sick to their
stomach. If you feel thirsty,
you already are dehydrated.
•Eat light. If you will be rid-
ing a lot of rides, it’s better to
eat light meals beforehand.
Heavy, greasy foods in your
stomach coupled with motion
sickness can lead to trouble.
Wait until after you have got-
ten your fill of the rides before
indulging in funnel cake.
•Stick together. It can be
tempting to separate when
you get to the carnival, as
older children may not be
interested in the same rides as
their younger siblings. But
separating increases the risk of
someone getting lost.
•Seek shelter in a storm.
Thunderstorms can roll in
unexpectedly. Remember,
lightning will seek the easiest
method to reaching the
ground. Tall rides could be
strike points. Get out of the
weather and move indoors or
to a car if possible.
Carnivals and fairs are
staples of the warm-weather
season across the country.
These enjoyable outings are
even more fun when families
play it safe.

igh-schoolers envi-
sion many different
scenarios for prom
night. They may have their
wardrobe picked out, the
transportation arranged and
the group of friends with
whom they will celebrate.
What prom-goers may not
foresee is heading to the prom
without a date. The reality is
that students go solo to the
prom each year and still have a
very good time in the process.
Prom is a highlight of
high school for many
teenagers. But a great deal of
pressure is placed on students
come prom night, when stu-
dents’ worries about their
attire pale in comparison to
the social pressure many feel.
Many would-be prom goers
would prefer to go without a
date to alleviate some of the
pressure to live up to certain
prom night expectations.
Today it is quite common for
groups of friends to go to prom
or homecoming together.
For students attending
the prom without a date, there
are still ways to enjoy the
event to the fullest. These are
some tips for having fun at
prom if you’re going stag.
•Establish a party within a
party. Use the prom as an
excuse to hold a singles mixer.
Spread the word that there
will be opportunities for other
singletons to meet at the prom
and perhaps pair off if a con-
nection is made. There are
likely many other boys and
girls at the school who are
attending the prom without a
date, making prom night a per-
fect opportunity to meet some-
one new. Knowing there will
be a new group of friends to
meet once they arrive could
motivate students to attend.
•Take a friend. Provided the
school doesn’t have strict rules
about prom “couples,” bring
whatever friend you want to
be your prom “date.” You are
likely to feel much more com-
fortable with someone you
know by your side hamming it
up for photographs and mak-
ing sure you don’t share all of
your secret dance moves on
the dance floor.
•Sibling set-up. Sometimes a
well-meaning brother or sister
can suggest one of his or her
friends to be a date for the
prom. Older siblings who have
already gone through the ritu-
al of prom and understand the
pressure of finding a date may
alleviate those concerns by
making a match for their
teenaged relative. The date
needn’t be a romantic one, but
just a way to spend time
together and pose for pictures.
•Take to social media. Social
media has enabled teens to
expand their social circles
regardless of geography. Ask a
social media friend who might
live outside of your school dis-
trict to be your date for the
prom. This can be a great way
to grow your friendship and
have a fun night together.

eing a responsible pet
owner requires a sub-
stantial commitment.
For dog owners, ensuring a
dog is well fed and exercised,
and receives routine medical
care are essential elements of
responsible pet ownership.
People new to dog ownership
may not realize the impor-
tance of early socialization
and training of their new pet.
The American Veteri-
nary Society of Animal
Behavior has outlined the
importance of early puppy
socialization, preferably before
a puppy reaches 12 to 16
weeks of age. This is a period
of important critical develop-
ment, which can help the ani-
mal grow into a well-adjusted
pet.
New pet parents are
encouraged to enroll in a
training class for their puppies
or, at the very least, to expose
their puppies to other animals
and people at an early age.
The experience not only helps
owners develop a strong bond
with their pets but also
enforces positive behavior in a
fun atmosphere. If not social-
ized, dogs may become aggres-
sive or extremely off-put by
other animals and people.
Such dogs run a greater risk of
being surrendered to a shelter.
Although puppies may
not have completed their
entire run of immunizations at
an early age, many vets agree
that early socialization with
other animals outweighs the
risk of contracting an illness.
The benefits of this socializa-
tion include proper interac-
tion with people, off-leash
play to learn boundaries and
bite inhibition with other
puppies.
Young pups are eager
sponges, ready to absorb infor-
mation from their environ-
ment and families. Early stim-
ulation in a fun and support-
ive manner will help prevent
some potential behavioral
problems that can become
more difficult to correct as a
puppy grows into adulthood.
Although it is possible to
teach an old dog new tricks it’s
much easier to teach dogs
when they are still eager pup-
pies willing to learn.
Barking, biting, digging
and jumping are all behaviors
puppies are likely to engage
in. It is key for pet owners to
discourage these behaviors as
early as possible because it can
lead to a strained relationship
between pet parent and ani-
mal if the dog continues to
engage in these acts into ado-
lescence. Very often dogs are
chastised or surrendered sim-
ply because they were never
taught the proper way to
behave.
It is not necessary to
enroll in a puppy training
class if owners feel confident
in their abilities to train the
dog on their own. Working
with the pet each and every
day for a small amount of time
will gradually drive home the
necessary lessons. Heaping a
large amount of praise on a job
well done will positively rein-
force desired actions. If a
puppy training class is not part
of a dog’s upbringing, at-home
training and visits to a dog
park or puppy daycare can
provide the socialization the
dog needs.
Puppies are willing and
able to learn a great deal of
behaviors at an early age.
Responsible pet owners must
set the course for discipline,
socialization and training that
can foster a long and healthy
relationship.

o you plan on mixing
pleasure with business
on a trip this summer?
There’s no problem from a tax
perspective as long as you fol-
low a basic precept: The pri-
mary purpose of the travel
must be business-related.
Otherwise, you’ll forfeit valu-
able tax deductions.
On the other hand, if you
stick to the tax itinerary, you
can write off most of your
travel costs – even though
you’re spending part of the
time on personal pursuits. The
key is to record significantly
more “business days” than
“personal days” on the trip.
Example: John Green, a
self-employed individual, flies
cross-country on Monday to
make a presentation to a
client. He is in business meet-
ings Tuesday through
Thursday. On Friday, the
client inks the deal. John
decides to spend the weekend
playing golf and lounging by
the pool. He flies home the
following Monday.
The round-trip airfare
costs John $1,500. He also
incurs $1,400 in lodging
($200 a day) and $800 in
meals ($100 a day) during his
eight-day trip.
On these facts, John
spends six days on business –
the two days traveling count
as business days – and only
two days on pleasure. So the
trip qualifies as business-relat-
ed travel. He can deduct the
entire airfare as well as five
days’ lodging and 50% of the
meals attributable to his busi-
ness stay. Result: John deducts
a total of $2,800 ($1,500 air-
fare, $1,000 lodging and $300
meals).
Note that any personal
expenses, such as green fees at
the golf course, are nonde-
ductible. Also, if family mem-
bers accompany you on a trip,
you can’t deduct their expens-
es, but your travel may still
qualify as business-related.
Of course, this is just a
brief summary of the pertinent
tax rules. To review the tax
requirements for your travel
plans, check with us before
you hop on board.

everal varieties of roses
are thornless or have
very few thorns. Many
plant breeders have developed
roses without thorns, which are
particularly safe for elderly gar-
deners, gardeners who have
young children or pets or those
who simply do not want to
worry about thorns on their
rose bushes. Smooth Touch
roses are a popular and thorn-
free breed of rose developed in
California in the 1960s by
Harvey Davidson. These roses
are touted as 95 to 100 percent
free of thorns. Some of the
Smooth Touch series include,
“Ballerina,” “Moonlight” and
“Snowflake.” A moderate
climber, the “Zephirine
Drouhin,” named after the wife
of a French rose enthusiast, is
another popular thorn-free
breed of rose. Several multiflo-
ra ramblers that descended
from Asian rose species also are
free of thorns. “Ghislaine de
Feligonde,” “Veilchenblau,”
“Goldfinch,” and “Ice Tea” are
others that feature thorn-free
canes and stems.

L
ighter fare is more pop-
ular when the weather
warms up, as many peo-
ple don’t want to feel weighed
down by their diet. Fish is a
popular summertime meal for
many reasons, not the least of
which is that fish tends to be
light but still flavorful. In
addition, many meals featur-
ing fish can be whipped up
rather quickly.
Such is the case with the
following recipe for “Grilled
Garlic Shrimp with a Fresh
Heirloom Tomato Sauce”
from Laurey Masterton’s “The
Fresh Honey Cookbook”
(Storey Publishing). Fresh and
simple, this meal can be
enjoyed as a change of pace at
summer barbecues or simply as
a light weeknight meal with
the family.
Grilled Garlic Shrimp with a
Fresh Heirloom Tomato
Sauce
Serves 6
For the marinated shrimp:
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
¼ cup red wine vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
36 large shrimp, peeled and
deveined
12 6-inch wooden skewers
For the tomato sauce:
3 pounds assorted large heirloom
tomatoes
1 small sweet onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper
1 tablespoon honey, preferably
sourwood honey
¼ cup fresh basil leaves, cut into
thin strips (chiffonade is the for-
mal name for this cut), plus
more for garnish
Sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1. To marinate the shrimp,
combine the olive oil, red
wine vinegar and garlic in a
large bowl. Stir to combine.
Add the shrimp and allow to
sit, covered, for 1 hour. Stir
occasionally.
2. Prepare a medium fire in a
charcoal or gas grill. Soak the
skewers in water for at least 30
minutes to prevent them from
burning.
3. To make the tomato sauce,
bring a medium pot of water
to a boil. Place one or two
tomatoes at a time into the
boiling water. Watch them
and, as you see the skin split,
remove with a slotted spoon
and place in a bowl of cool
water. At this point, it will be
very easy to slip off the skins.
4. Cut the peeled tomatoes
into a small dice. Put the cut
tomatoes into a large bowl.
Add the onion, garlic, salt,
pepper, and honey. Stir gently
to combine.
5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 per
skewer. Grill the skewered
shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on
each side, until they are pink.
Sprinkle lightly with sea salt
and a couple grinds of fresh
pepper.
6. Just before serving, add the
basil leaves to the tomato
sauce. Taste and add more salt
if necessary.
7. Ladle the tomato sauce
onto a serving platter and
arrange the skewers on top of
the sauce. Garnish with more
basil leaves and enjoy!

M
oving is seldom
easy. But even after
all of the boxes
have been unpacked and the
furniture moved in, some of
the difficulty of moving
remains. Much of that
remaining struggle can be
traced to adjusting to your
new environment.
Though many people set-
tle into a new residence after a
short period of time, acclimat-
ing yourself to a new commu-
nity is a taller order, especially
for those without friends or
family already entrenched in
the community. The following
are a handful of ways men and
women who recently relocat-
ed to a new community can
acclimate themselves to their
new surroundings.
•Join a local community
organization. Local communi-
ty organizations provide great
opportunities to meet new
people and learn about a town
or neighborhood. Parents may
find such organizations more
accessible, as associations that
focus on local youngsters are
quite common. Adults can
join parental organizations
sponsored by their children’s
school or volunteer with an
extracurricular organization,
such as a local youth sports
program. These are great ways
for moms and dads to meet fel-
low parents and begin forming
new friendships.
Singles or married cou-
ples without children also can
take advantage of community
organizations. Volunteer with
an environmental cleanup
group or sign up to play in a
recreational sports league with
neighbors in your age group.
Opportunities to assimilate
into your new community
abound, it just takes a little
effort on your part to get
involved.
•Make an effort to meet your
neighbors. The days of yore
when everyone knew their
neighbors are largely a thing
of the past, but that doesn’t
mean you can’t make an effort
to meet the people who live
next door. Once you have set-
tled in, knock on your next
door neighbors’ doors and
introduce yourself. If you real-
ly want to go the extra mile,
host a casual backyard barbe-
cue and invite your neighbors
and their families. Such an
affair can be a great way to
break the ice and you might
just find your neighbors share
similar interests.
•Don’t be a shut-in. Comm-
unities are often home to
numerous traditions, and
many such traditions are
aimed at increasing the sense
of community within a given
town. Summer carnivals or
winter holiday balls can make
for a fun way to assimilate into
a community and meet your
neighbors. Leave the couch
and your television behind to
take advantage of such oppor-
tunities when they present
themselves.
•Join a professional organiza-
tion. Many professionals find
the demands of their careers
are simply too great to give
them the amount of time they
need to fully assimilate into
their new communities. In
such instances, men and
women might want to join
their local professional organ-
ization, which can help them
meet professional peers and
make contacts that can pay
both professional and personal
dividends. If no such organiza-
tion exists in your community,
consider starting one.
The difficulty of moving
is often considered a burden
on children. But adults may
struggle to acclimate to a new
community as well. Making
that adjustment and learning
to thrive in your new commu-
nity may require some creativ-
ity and a little extra effort on
your part, but it can be done.
