I SAW AN
incredible quote
the other day on
Instagram and
I immediately
reposted it. It said
this: "When you
complain, you make
yourself a victim.
Leave the situation,
change the situation,
or accept it. All else
is madness." – by
Echart Tolle
I am a huge fan of inspirational quotes, as those who
know me can attest to. And this one really hit home.
I've been guilty of complaining about things: my weight,
certain relationships, my hnancial situation, etc. To me,
I thought by venting it would just get it off my chest. I
never thought of myself as a victim. I can't stand it when
people act like victims to their situations. So, when I –
and I consider myself to be a very strong, independent
woman – saw myself as victim (based on that quote),
it completely frazzled me. I'm no victim! I refuse to be a
victim! Therefore, I refuse to be a complainer.
Instead, I'm going to re-examine the things I've
complained about in the past and do one of those three
things: leave it, change it or accept it. Night be difhcult at
hrst, but it's better than being a victim. A victim implies !
have no power to do anything. And that's simply not true.
! hold all the power to lose weight, get ht, make more
money, end bad relationships, etc. It's time to be a victor,
not a victim. And for those things I cannot change, as the
serenity prayer states: God grant me the serenity to accept
the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I
can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Something else inspired me this week and that
something is a person: Dallas Robinson. I had the pleasure
of speaking with him on the phone for a few minutes to
get some additional details for his article appearing in this
magazine, and wow, what a guy! He works full time for
the Army National Guard and as a coach at a university.
He refuses to take on anything that would impede his
ability to serve his country or coach and minister to college
kids. Even when he was training for the Olympics, he held
onto both jobs, trained hard and took vacation time to do
interviews and to go compete. Talk about dedication! Find
out more about Dallas on pages 36-37.
I hope I've inspired you a little today. Feel free to e-mail
me at editor@maxmuscle.com and let me know your
thoughts.

MORE OF EVERYTHING
After recently completing Basic Combat Training(BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT, which
is job training) and returning to Orange County, I got really into fitness and health. I've always had
muscle but just bulky and far from toned muscle since I had always played sports in the past but
never knew about clean eating or supplements. Upon my return, I have grown passionate about
changing my lifestyle by improving my knowledge in nutrition and physical training. Max Muscle
is minutes from base, so I go quite often on my lunches. Max Muscle has helped me acquire new
knowledge on ways to better myself and my performance. I am currently doing CrossFit at CrossFit
RXD in East Anaheim, and have been using Max Muscle supplements to get the best results of my
new lifestyle. Being passionate about my level of fitness has been beneficial in every aspect of my
life, especially being in the military. Not only do I hold one of the highest Physical Training scores in
my unit, but I also influence those around me with the new knowledge I have. Other soldiers see my
dedication to eating clean and working out, and now come to me for advice or are complimenting
me on my meals and workouts, which is very meaningful to me. So, with all the products and
knowledge I've been getting from Max Muscle, I've been getting in better and better shape. I feel
better all around. I get better sleep. I've hit multiple personal records and I'm more tone than I've
ever been.
–Heather Doppke, strong Max Muscle customer, Westminster, California
CRITICAL PART OF HIS SUCCESS
In college I shattered my tibia and fibula playing football and had to have a
steel rod and two screws inserted in my leg for a year and a half. I retired from
sports at the advice of my parents and doctor but stayed active with wrestling
as an assistant high school and middle school coach for 8 years until a new
job wouldn’t allow me to coach anymore. I moved to the Bay Area from
Philadelphia in February 2009 to take a job with Kaiser Permanente. I was
230 pounds and hadn’t seriously worked out or trained since I broke my leg in
1997 (I'd lost the motivation since I wasn’t competing in sports anymore).
I started to lose some weight on my own and was working with a few
different personal trainers, training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and taking the
supplements they recommended that the gym sold. I wasn’t really seeing results
that I wanted. I even ended up injuring my shoulder in a workout because they
wanted to go “beast mode” instead of training smart and for a purpose.
Then I started training with Bryant Pangelinan in the summer of 2011
post shoulder surgery and he developed a training strategy to get me back
to training BJJ and also suggested I talk to Kenny Tali at Max Muscle Walnut
Creek about supplements to help me recover from workouts. I began to
compete in BJJ in January 2012 and have been pretty successful, making the
podium 22 times. Max Muscle supplements also played a big part in me
recovering quickly from major knee surgery in 2012 and allowed me to return
to competitive BJJ in less than a year. The combination of training with Max
Muscle athlete and trainer Bryant Pangelinan and the supplements from Kenny
Tali and his Max Muscle Walnut Creek team are a critical part of my success!

IT ALL!
I stumbled into your store [Max
Muscle Fort Myers, Florida] by
chance. It was the best thing I've
ever done. Your nutrition plan and
education on macronutrients set off
a change in my journey that I could
never have imagined. I've lost a total
of 86 pounds, 26 percent body
fat and increased my lean mass all
while using your products at different
stages of my journey. Currently my core products are your High 5 protein, Cleanse & Lean Advanced,
Vit-Acell and I'm starting the MaxxTOR I purchased today. I truly believe in your franchise, your products
and everything it stands for. Currently cutting down to 8 percent body fat hopefully for my first photo
shoot then a little leaner for my first physique competition.

12 WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM ı JUNE 2014
Pre-workout meals, snacks or
shakes are a vital part of any training
program. Let’s face it, working out
is not easy. Especially if you are
supersetting or training intensely for
more than 30 minutes. If you have
ever bonked, then you know what I
am talking about. Bonking is an old
marketing term for hitting the wall or
simply running out of nutrients to fuel
your workout. By taking a little extra
time to make sure your body has
the fuel to energize a great workout,
you can dramatically improve your
results. Here are a few simple tips
to help ensure that you will be
energized for your next workout.
I am sure you have all heard
the phrase, “carbing up.” We make
sure to focus on carbohydrates in
our diet to fuel our next workout.
Carbohydrates are quickly broken
down through digestion and stored
in our muscles as glycogen, which
is commonly referred to as “muscle
fuel.” Glycogen literally fuels your
muscles and when it is present,
you can do more reps, ultimately
increasing your endurance and
strength during your workout.
Be cautious of getting too much
hber or grains that may be unsettling
as you train. Pasta, fruit, sugars, non
FOREVERYOUNG
hbrous veggies, etc. can help quickly
fuel your next workout.
Small amounts of protein (8-15
grams) before a workout can be
benehcial in elevating your nitrogen
balance and ultimately preserving lean
muscle tissue. As your body is stressed,
it will need amino acids, which are
derived from protein. Amino acids are
readily available in your bloodstream
for 4 to 5 hours after you consume
protein. This is why most nutritionists
recommend protein every 4 to 5 hours
in smaller meals. Otherwise your body
will break down lean muscle tissue to
fuel stressed muscles and that’s not
good.
The reason why I recommend small
amounts of protein before a workout is
that protein is very hard to digest, so
if you take in 30 grams, your body will
actually use energy for digestion rather
than training.
Lastly, avoid fats or make sure fats
make up a very small amount (less than
5 grams) of your pre-workout meal.
I love to make a quick shake about 45
minutes before I train. Here is a great
pre-workout recipe for an energizing
shake:
Extreme Pre-Workout Drink
• 6-10 oz apple juice
• 6-10 oz water (optional – or use more
juice)
• ½ cup ice or frozen berries (or both)
• ½ banana
• ½ scoop MaxPro vanilla protein (15g)
• 1 scoop of Full Blown Extreme
Blend it all together and enjoy!
This shake will give you
approximately 30-40 grams of
carbohydrates and 15 grams of protein.
I add in the Full Blown
Extreme to get some extra
energy for my workout.
Stop by your local Max
Muscle store to design
your own pre-workout
shake. Our Certihed
Fitness Nutrition
Coaches will make sure
you get energized and
ready for your next
workout. MS&F

Nove over hu shots - a new
study suggests that ginseng is
your new best friend when it
comes to preventing inhuenza.
Ginseng has long been touted
as a supplement dynamo, said
to be benehcial for stamina and
energy, blood sugar control, even
cancer prevention. But the studies
are often contradictory, leaving
us in the dark - or at least in the
muddy gray - as to what, if any,
benehts this supplement really
has. Now, research from Georgia
State University's new !nstitute
for Biomedical Sciences found that
red ginseng extract has multiple
immune modifying effects that
can protect against inhuenza A,
as well as antiviral activity against
respiratory syncytial virus (RSv)
infection, a major cause of severe
respiratory illness in children.
While it's too early to say if the
results of the study that was done
on mice will hold true for humans,
it's not too early to stock up on
ginseng tea for the cold and hu
season - the warm beverage will
make you feel better even if it
doesn't prevent respiratory illness!

It's Not Me,
It's My Genes!

Are you a lightweight when it comes to tolerating
pain? It may not mean that you’re a baby – but that
you have a gene variant for low pain tolerance, say
researchers who recently presented results of their
study at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual
meeting.
Te study, which involved more than 2,700 people
diagnosed with chronic pain who were taking opioid
pain medications, asked participants to rate their
perception of pain on a scale from zero to 10. Nine
percent of the participants had low pain perception
(high tolerance to pain), 46 percent had moderate pain
perception (moderate pain tolerance) and 45 percent had
high pain perception (low tolerance to pain).
When the researchers then studied the participant’s
genes, they found that the DRD1 gene variant was 33
percent more prevalent in the low pain perception group,
while the DRD2 variant was 25 percent more common
among those who perceived a high level of pain. Tose
who perceived a moderate level of pain had more COMT
and OPRK gene variants.
Nobody (except the scientists themselves) need
remember the specifc gene names. Sufce it to say that
there seem to be certain genes that play a role in pain
perception – and pain tolerance.

Are you ready to start a new eating plan or exercise regime? Researchers from San Diego
State University say that you’ll most likely begin your new lifestyle program, at least by researching
how to go about it, on a Monday – or at least early in the week.
Analyzing Google searches for healthy topics, such as “healthy diet,” the researchers found
that on average, searches for such health topics were 30 percent more frequent at the beginning
of the week than on days later in the week, with the lowest average number of searches on
Saturday. This pattern holds true week after week, year after year.
When the team examined whether media exposure could be driving this pattern of health
behavior, they found that frequency of news stories encouraging healthy lifestyles peaked on
Wednesday and were statistically independent of health searches online. More likely, say the
researchers, that people perceive – especially after a weekend of “bad” lifestyle behavior –
Monday to be a new start, sort of like a mini New Year's Day.

You know that physical
activity is great for you – not
only to get those sculpted abs,
but for an improved mood and
even a spicier sex life! But if
you’re a serious athlete – even
just a weekend warrior –
chances are you’ll eventually
sustain an injury. According
to the U.S. Consumer Product
Safety Commission’s National
Electronic Injury Surveillance
System (NEISS), nearly 2
million otherwise healthy
people each year suffer a
sports-related injury that
brings them to the emergency
room for treatment.
It’s likely that if your injury
requires medical care, you’ll
get the standard treatment
and advice: rest, ice,
compression and elevation
(RICE), a narcotic pain reliever,
perhaps a referral to an
orthopedic specialist if things
are more serious. And in the
worst-case scenario, you may
be sidelined for weeks or
even months. But these days,
sports medicine specialists are
turning to other treatments
that can help to relieve pain
– and avoid overuse of pain
medications – as well as get
you back into the game sooner.
Here are some of them:
GET
BACK
IN THE
GAME
AFTER
AN
INJURY
Sports medicine has
come a long way
in helping all kinds
of athletes get back
to peak physical
condition. Here's a
look at some of the
therapies in use today.
17 JUNE 2014 ı WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM
MASSAGE
“Medical massage therapy is one of
the hrst go-tos for any sort of sports
injury,” said Kathy Gruver, PhD, natural
health practitioner and medical massage
therapist from Santa Barbara, California.
“It’s not invasive, not expensive, and
done by a trained professional, is not
likely to worsen the condition.”
According to Gruver, medical massage
(not “spa” type relaxation massage) is
ideal for shoulder issues, shin splints,
tennis elbow, sciatica or knee pain due
to tightness in the quads. “It pushes
the toxins out, increases circulation,
smoothes scar tissue, eases pain and
increases hexibility and strength," said
Gruver, who uses a combination of deep
tissue and trigger point massage for her
clients with sports injuries.
How It Works: While research on
exactly how massage therapy aids
injury recovery is not conclusive, a
recent study at McMaster University
in Ontario suggests that it triggers
biochemical sensors that can send
inhammation-reducing signals to
muscle cells. In addition, the study
suggests that massage signals muscle
to build more mitochondria, the
power centers of cells, which play an
important role in healing. The beneht is
certainly not lost on professional sports
teams, as an increasing number of
them have added a massage therapist
to the payroll in order to get athletes
back to the held faster.
Cost: The average cost for medical
massage therapy is $60 per hour;
some insurance companies will pay for
it if you have a physician’s order for
treatment.
COLD LASER THERAPY
“Most professional athletic teams
use cold laser therapy,” said Douglas
Johnson, a certihed athletic trainer,
certihed laser specialist and Senior
vP of Clinical and Scientihc Affairs at
Multi Radiance Medical, a manufacturer
of cold lasers. “And the majority of
collegiate teams have it. It not only
accelerates injury rehabilitation, but
it can help to prevent injuries by
decreasing muscle fatigue and helps
athletes to recover more quickly after
performance by increasing oxygen to
the tissues.”
Research shows that cold laser
therapy, also called low-level laser
therapy, is effective to treat all sports
injuries, particularly jumper’s knee,
tennis elbow and Achilles tendinitis.
It has also been found to reduce
pain, decreasing the need for narcotic
painkillers.
How It Works: Laser is a specialized,
concentrated form of light energy
that is absorbed into the body cells,
said Johnson. “It is absorbed within
the mitochondria, the power house
of the cells, causing increased energy
within the cell. It also is absorbed into
the blood, causing nitric oxide to be
released, increasing blood how and
tissue oxygenation.”
Cost: Low-level laser therapy costs
between $75-$185 per treatment;
most injuries require three treatments
a week for 5 to 15 weeks, depending
upon the severity of the injury. Most
insurance companies will not pay for
cold laser therapy.
CRYOTHERAPY WITH
INTERMITTENT PNEUMATIC
COMPRESSION
“Cryotherapy with compression is
underused in sports injuries, yet it’s
preferable to narcotics,” said Nathan
Wei, MD, regenerative medicine expert
and director of Arthritis Treatment
Center in Frederick, Maryland.
Cryotherapy with intermittent
compression, or “cryo with IPC” is a
machine with a cuff that surrounds the
injured area – knee, ankle, shoulder,
arm, hand or back – with cold water at
a precisely controlled temperature, and
at the same time delivers intermittent
air compression (active compression/
decompression rather than static
compression such as with an ACE
bandage). Studies show that this
therapy helps to return athletes to their
activity more quickly as well as reduces
the need for narcotic pain medication.
How It Works: When soft tissue
trauma occurs as a result of injury,
overuse or surgery, it causes an
inhammatory response that increases
the how of white blood cells to the
area to promote healing. But this
increased blood how to the area
also causes swelling and reduction
of oxygen to the area, resulting in
cellular injury and pain. Cryotherapy
works by decreasing inhammation
and the production of pain mediators,
decreasing cellular oxygen demand
and reducing tissue damage. Combined
with active compression, which
mimics the body’s natural muscle
contractions, pumping huids away from
the injury where they can be resolved
by the lymphatic system, healing is
accelerated, and pain reduced.
Cost: You can buy a simple cryo
system such as Dura Kold, Cryo/Cuff
or Polar Care, all of which have cooling
systems and static compression for
about $65-$250. Or spring for a cryo
system with IPC, such as Game Ready,
which costs about $980 for a two-week
rental. Some insurance companies will
pay for all or part of a cryo system. ii

ELECTRICAL MUSCLE STIMULATION
Olympic athletes as well as pro sports teams use electrical
muscle stimulation (EMS) for injury rehabilitation, which
is a treatment where electrical impulses are delivered to
weakened or painful muscles through electrodes on the
skin. EMS makes the muscle contract to prevent disuse
atrophy (loss of muscle); it also relaxes muscle spasms,
increases blood circulation to the muscle and reduces pain.
It is commonly used for muscle pain, spasm and weakness
associated with tendon and ligament injuries.
How It Works: Most EMS machines use an alternating
current, which is delivered to the painful muscle area. When
the current passes through the muscle, it causes the muscle
to contract, then relax and lengthen. One particular EMS
treatment, the ARP Wave, uses a direct electrical current
and a patented bio-electrical current to locate “hot spots,” or
areas of scarring caused by injury, which may be a distance
from where the pain is felt, said Christopher Knott, MS, an
exercise physiologist and neuromuscular therapist from
Colorado Springs, Colorado. “Every injury causes a bio-
electrical disturbance,” he explained. “This creates a wall
of tissue called scar tissue, which keeps the muscle from
doing its job of absorbing force. ARP fnds the electrical
disturbances and neutralizes them, allowing your muscles to
do their job.”
While most EMS machines work while you’re at rest, the
ARP Wave is used while you’re doing a series of range-
of-motion exercises and other exercise techniques, which
more quickly re-educates the muscle and speeds recovery,
according to Knott.
Cost: Length of EMS treatment varies and costs between
$65-$200 per treatment; some types of EMS are covered by
insurance if performed by a licensed therapist.
INTRAMUSCULAR STIMULATION
Intramuscular stimulation, or “IMS,” uses acupuncture
needles to penetrate deep within the muscle to target trigger
points, which are hyper-irritable areas of muscle that have
become shortened, tight and weak. Trigger points can occur
with an acute sprain or with a repetitive stress injury, like a
tennis elbow. “IMS reduces the need for pain medications by
hoping to cure the problem rather than mask the symptoms,”
said Chris Centeno, MD of Boulder, Colorado, who is board
certifed in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as
interventional pain management.
How It Works: IMS stimulates both the muscle and the
nerve, according to Dr. Centeno. When the stretch receptor
in the muscle is stimulated, it produces a refex relaxation,
as well as an electrical response within the muscle to make
the nerve function normally again. The needle also causes a
small injury to the muscle, he added, which draws blood to
the area and helps to initiate the natural healing process.
Cost: IMS treatments are done once a week for 5 to 10
weeks and cost about $50-60 per treatment. Many insurance
companies will pay for this treatment up to a certain amount
per injury per year.
PROLOTHERAPY WITH DEXTROSE
According to Dr. Centeno, prolotherapy is most often used
for tendon problems such as tennis elbow. It involves
injections in the region of tendons or ligaments with a
dextrose (sugar) solution. “Prolotherapy might be used if
IMS is unsuccessful,” he said.
How It Works: The dextrose solution, which is diluted
with water or an anesthetic solution, causes irritation to
the injured tissues, signaling the body to initiate a healing
process.
Cost: Prolotherapy can cost from $100-200 per treatment,
with many people needing 3 to 6 treatments, and is usually
not covered by insurance. ii

ATHLETES & PAIN PILL USAGE
According to a study published in “Drug and Alcohol
Dependence,” retired NFL players misuse opioid pain
medications such as Oxycontin, Vicodin and Percocet at
a rate more than four times that of the general population,
thought to be because players misused painkillers during
their NFL careers.
The extreme physical wear and tear that serious athletes
sustain can cause a number of injuries and chronic pain
conditions that lead to the use – and misuse – of opioid
pain medications. Whether taking too much of a painkiller
or taking it for too long of a period of time, it’s easy to
become either physically dependent or addicted to these
medications. And when athletes become addicted to pain
medications and the prescription runs out, they sometimes
turn to street drugs – even a more readily available street
drug such as heroin – often with drastic consequences.
While the vast majority of people prescribed opiate
painkillers do not become dependent or addicted to them,
it can happen more easily than you may think. Here’s
how to decrease your risk, according to Harvard Medical
School:

Limit the use of an opioid to no more than 7 days. Using one for
more than 30 days can lead to dependence.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed. If you try to reduce
addiction risk by cutting back on the medicine and waiting
until the pain gets unbearable, it can backfire. The memory
of how bad the pain got and the relief you experience
from taking the painkiller can actually increase your risk of
becoming addicted.

If you need pain medication for longer than a week, talk to your
doctor about regular checkups to assess whether the medication
is still needed and if there are other options available to
you. MS&F
PLATELET RICH PLASMA
AND STEM CELL THERAPY
Both platelet rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy, like
prolotherapy, are delivered through a needle. And according
to Dr. Wei, these treatments, which utilize the body’s own
cellular growth and healing factors to heal damaged tissue,
are the wave of the future. They are used for rotator cuff
tears, Achilles tendon injuries and even ACL injuries.
How It Works: PRP, which has been used for about 15
years in professional athletic injuries, is an injection of an
“ultraconcentrated” form of your own blood, said Dr. Wei.
“Blood is drawn from your vein and then spun down in a
centrifuge to obtain a higher concentration of platelets, flled
with growth and healing factors.”
Then, using imaging techniques, a needle is placed into
the defective ligament or tendon, and the area is “peppered”
(multiple small punctures), then the platelets are injected,
resulting in natural healing both from the needle injury itself
– as well as the growth factors in the platelets.
For more serious injuries that don’t respond to PRP, stem
cell therapy, which uses either your own stem cells from
your bone marrow or fat cells, or those from a healthy donor
or umbilical cord blood, can be delivered to the injured
area in much the same way as PRP therapy. “Stem cells are
‘blank slate’ cells,” said Wei. “They can become any cell you
want them to be.”
Cost: The cost of PRP and stem cell therapy varies,
depending upon the area to be treated and the number
of injections needed. PRP ranges from $300 to $750 per
injection, while stem cell therapy costs about $750-$2,650
or more. At present, these therapies are not reimbursed
by insurance. But “insurance coverage at some point is
a foregone conclusion,” said Dr. Centeno. “Many studies
have shown that dollar for dollar these procedures are less
expensive than traditional surgery. This doesn’t even include
the long-term costs associated with continued care for re-
injury, surgical complications and arthritis.” MS&F

COVERSTORY By Amy Schlinger • Photos by JamesPatrick.com
You’ve heard it before; maybe you’ve even said it yourself
– that athlete you’re playing against was born with good genes.
He’s genetically gifted and even if you gave the game your all,
he’s predisposed to be better. Turns out, while being active in
general at a young age is good, the gene theory isn’t exactly
true. “There are a few things that are pretty resistant to training
like flat out top speed, but almost every other athletic trait can be
improved,” said David Epstein, author of The New York Times
Bestseller, The Sports Gene. “These skills are all built up through
practice that mimics game-time situations.”
Repetition through practice is key. “You want to train your body
to perform efficient movement patterns specific to your sport or
activity,” said Curtis Williams, NASM-CPT and former pro football
player. “Your body will adapt and begin to do these movements
naturally.”
Self-regulatory behavior is important, too. Going to a driving
range and just hitting a bunch of shots isn’t as productive as being
focused and making quality drives. Assessing your performance
more frequently and wanting to better yourself is a necessary trait
in a good athlete.
Ready to step up your game? Use our experts’ tips to help
improve these athletic traits.

to stop great speed without losing
balance requires a lot of core strength
and power in the hips,” said Williams.
Sprint short distances and see if you
can come to a complete stop without
being off-kilter.
READING THE PLAY
Studying other players and opponents
movements and patterns as well as
game and practice hlm is one of the best
ways to know what's coming on the held
in the future. You must be, as Williams
refers to it, a student of the game.
Overthinking in a high-pressure situation
can make of break the outcome. “That
half a second spent thinking can be the
difference in reacting to what you’re
seeing and making a huge play,” said
Williams. “The more you understand
about your opponent will enable you to
act instinctively.”
IMPROVING SPEED
As mentioned earlier, top speed cannot
be changed. However, there are tips
and tricks to come off the line fast
when sprinting. “Get a more steep
angle of the lower leg to the ground,”
said Epstein. “This keeps you from
having your back foot underneath you
in the hrst steps which you don't want."
It’s best to have the leg behind you for
the hrst few steps. Nany sprinters use
the toe drag to help ensure their leg
stays behind them.
UP THE ENDURANCE
Nost people tend to train under their
lactate threshold, or training at a
medium level as to never max out the
cardiovascular system. However, it’s
been seen in sports recently that this
may not be the best way to train. “Take
HAND-EYE COORDINATION
While you can’t improve reaction
time, you can learn patterns. “People
talk about the game ‘slowing down,’
but really athletes are just seeing
what’s coming, before it’s coming,”
said Epstein. Baseball players use
simulations of balls being pitched at
them and learn to see the patterns on
the ball. This allows them to identify
the pitch so they know if and when to
swing. It’s also important to recognize
what the person who is throwing the
pitch or pass or kicking the goal does
with their body. The more and different
opponents you face, the better.
CHANGING DIRECTION QUICKLY
Balance, balance, balance! Without
equilibrium, when you’re looking to
change direction quickly, you may end
up wiping out. “Understanding how
BUILD FAST-TWITCH MUSCLE FIBERS
¨Fast-twitch muscle hbers are good for
any explosive sport that requires quick
bursts for short amounts of time,” said
Williams. “Think track sprinting, football
or basketball.” The best way to build these
hbers? Loading up your strength-training
program so you’re working with heavier
weight. Plyometic training like box jumps
and burpees can also be benehcial.

the Dutch speed skaters at the Sochi [Winter Olympics]
for example. After 40 years of training at a medium level,
they switched to polarized training,” said Epstein. “There’s
no medium intensity – it’s either doing close to nothing or
going all out.” And if you watched the Olympics you know
this theory worked well for the Dutch, and more and more
evidence is coming out in support of polarized training.
RECOVERY
With the numerous hours of training plus actual game
time, athletes are putting a lot of beating on their bodies.
Giving your body the proper recovery it needs, starting with
even just stretching, is so important to be able to continue
to perform at an elite level. Supplements and certain
ingredients in supplements can also help your body bounce
back faster. “Beta-alanine is a great option to take because
it reduces the lactic acid in your muscles,” said Scott Herkes,
a Nax Nuscle Sports Nutrition franchisee and certihed
htness nutrition coach. ¨Studies have shown that taking 3.2
ounces a day – and it can be split up over the course of
the day – within in two months, there’s been an 80 percent
increase in carnosine in the muscles, which is a molecule
that helps eliminate acid.” Be aware: taking the full dose as
opposed to splitting it up over the whole day can give your
skin a prickly sensation, but that tends to go away once you
start working out. Beta-alanine and a good isolate protein
can really help you after a grueling workout to be ready to
go again the next day. MS&F
IMPROVING VERTICAL HEIGHT
Many jumpers who start with a run, tend to
begin their jump too low. “It’s important to
take a really long second to last step and
a short last step,” said Epstein. “If that’s
not intuitive for a jumper, you have to learn
to do it and learn how to transfer that
energy.” A lot of trainers will have athletes
jump over and over again, until they get to
a point where they aren’t going any higher,
or they end up breaking momentum.
Lower body strength is important as well.
Exercises like squats and deadlift help build
lower body strength.
Max Muscle Sports Nutrition is proud to introduce
XTINGUISHER, a scientifically-based formula that supports
the muscles production & maintenance of carnosine and
aerobic ATP production. Using XTINGUISHER will allow you

So you decided to save a little
cash, or maybe you thought dieting
and working out with your spouse
would increase your love connection.
Save money and your marriage?
Sweet!
But what do you think will happen
when you remind your wife or husband
not to take that extra serving of
lasagna? Do you think your wife will
enjoy it when you tape measure her
mufhn top? Are you sure you want to
be the cop who suddenly turns the
tables on what was supposed to be a
romantic candlelit dinner?
As a marriage family therapist who
has seen hrsthand how easily the
best of intentions are misunderstood,
I can tell you that a conversation
between couples about healthy living
can quickly morph into a conversation
concerning just about anything else:
1. Control issues: “Honey, you might
want to think before you pick up that
cookie.”
2. Bad timing: “How come every time
I talk about us you start talking about
food?”
3. An endless parade of unmet
expectations: “You didn’t get up with
me to go running at 6 this morning like
we talked about. I feel like you’re not
committed to me or this relationship.”
You would be hard pressed, in fact,
to hnd a difhcult aspect of your love
life that would not unexpectedly rear
its head in your quest to “assist” your
partner towards better health.
The root of all of this, I believe, is
power differential. Basically, a certain
amount of authority has to be vested
in the person who “encourages”
proper diet and exercise – authority
that anyone in a committed, equitable
relationship would be ill-advised to
take on if he or she has no formal
training in personal training.
Your connection to your spouse is
complicated enough already. Why add
to it? A certihed personal trainer is the
true authority who knows far more
than you do about what to eat, when
to eat and what level and types of
exercises and workouts are appropriate
and feasible for your body type and
lifestyle as a whole. Bonus: you won't
have to feel the embarrassment or deal
with the nagging if you are working
with a professional.
So, it may be well worth your time,
money and relationship to outsource
what could be your own bad advice.

MAXCHAMP By David Calhoun, 2013 MaxForm Life Challenge Champion
In the last month I have seen so
much heart and positivity from those
around me and in the Max Muscle
community. I get so motivated when I
see people overcoming giant obstacles
in their lives and always pushing
to be better people than they were
yesterday.
It all started with my dad's (David
Calhoun Sr.) injury. He cut his hand
very bad. He had to have surgery and
is currently going through rehab for
recovery. This injury would darn near
stop anyone, but not my dad. He just
adapted to the situation and made the
best of it. So he changed his workouts
and not only did he adapt but he
overcame – the old man is working
out harder than ever and screaming
his saying, "PMA" (positive mental
attitude) every step of the way! I'm
blessed to have come from such a
strong man.
Shortly after dad hurt his hand, I
strained my back and my trainer said
I could not lift for a while. Blasphemy!
I became very frustrated only doing
cardio, stretching and rolling out every
day. So I called up my friend Cory
Jackson (Fayetteville, NC Max Muscle).
I knew with Cory being a powerlifter
he would understand my frustration
and could give me some solid advice
and motivation. Cory told me he had a
patellar tendon tear. The doctors told
him it would be one year before a full
recovery.
Taking weights from a beast like
&RU\ LV OLNH WHOOLQJ D ¿VK QRW WR VZLP
I asked Cory what he did to keep his
sanity and his response was, "I worked
on my weak areas and did the best
that I could with what my body would
allow." It was so motivating to know
that someone else was going through

something far worse than what I was
going through and still had a smile on
his face and motivation in his voice.
Talking to Cory got me so motivated
the rest of the week. I did my cardio
with a smile on my face and felt
silly for ever feeling frustrated. I'm
blessed to have such a strong-
willed friend.
Also this week I made a new
friend. Her name is Trisha Weltz
and she is in the MaxForm Life
Challenge contest this year. She
is kicking butt. She has lost 30
pounds since December and 50
pounds total since she began
her weight-loss journey.
With Trisha's son Hunter
cheering her on and being
her motivation, nothing can
stop this woman. She has
an amazing story to tell,
too. Trisha may be one the
most inspirational, positive
and upbeat people I have
ever had the pleasure of
talking to. Hearing someone
so positive and upbeat
made me think that maybe
I should add a little more
positivity to my life.
Talking to Trisha also
made me realize there is
always room to grow.
This group of people
has motivated me to
the point of no end
and made me hungry
for more on my everyday
journey to be better than I was
yesterday.
A big thank you to my Dad, Cory
Jackson and Trisha Weltz for all the
love, encouragement and motivation!

MAXHEROES By Jackie Classen
A TRUE
WARRIOR
AND
ATHLETE
Dallas Robinson never thought he’d
be an Olympian Bobsleigh brakeman,
but as an elite athlete with years of
training the opportunity found him back
in 2010 and he decided to give it a
shot. He then earned a spot on the
4-man and 2-man Sochi 2014 Olympic
Team. Though he didn't medal, the
experience was an incredible honor.
MULTISPORT ATHLETE
At 32, Dallas rehects on a
distinguished athletic career
that started at Eastern Kentucky
University in Richmond, Kentucky
where he played football and ran
track. Built bigger than a typical
sprinter, Dallas used his football
power and his sprinter speed to
make a name for himself. At 6 foot
+ and 230 pounds, his ability to
sprint and break records was unique,
but this natural athlete transitioned
successfully between college football
and track, to professional track and
held, to the U.S. Rugby Team
and eventually to the USA
Bobsleigh team.
When asked what he
likes best about his new
sport, Dallas responded
enthusiastically, ¨! really
enjoyed training! As a sprinter,
especially as a big guy, ! never
really ate much and ! couldn't
lift because !'d get too big.
But as a brakeman on the
bobsleigh, ! get the best of
both worlds! ! get to train like
a sprinter but lift and eat like a
power lifter!"

SERVING HIS COUNTRY
The story is even more intriguing
when you realize Dallas committed
to serving his country in the Army
National Guard between college and
his Olympic debuts and was admitted
to the elite Army World Class Athlete
Program. Dallas and teammate
Nick Cunningham, lead driver for
the bobsleigh team, were honored
to represent their country in the
Olympics. They were part of only six
soldiers to compete.
COACHING OTHERS
Dallas is settled back at home on his
farm in Kentucky and back at work
for the Army National Guard where
he is a Sergeant and works in the
Resilience ofhce at the Frankfort State
Capital teaching courses on adversity
and positive thinking. Dallas enjoys
his work with troubled teens in the
Youth Challenge Academy and strives
to provide positive resources, support
and encouragement.
Dehnitely a busy man, Dallas is
also in his seventh season working
as a full-time coach for Georgetown
College. Using his years of training
as the foundation, Dallas specializes
in coaching young athletes in sprints,
jumps and hurdles in Track &
Field. Always competitive at
heart, Dallas is excited
that this past season,
Georgetown broke
nine school records!
As much as this
Olympic athlete likes
to win, he said the
best part of coaching is
helping kids achieve their
dreams. “There is very little
more rewarding than helping
kids reach their goals and making
their dreams yours!” Dallas said. “I am
by far the best version of myself when
I am with them.”
FAVORITE PRODUCTS
As a longtime Team Max sponsored
athlete, Dallas has hne-tuned his
high level athleticism including

helpful in keeping his body
performing at peak levels. His
favorite products include:

Q: How did it feel to compete at
the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics?
A: For me it was a long 15-year
journey to get there. Kind of surreal.
You look back at everything you
learned to get to that point and
the hundreds of thousands of
people along the way. ... It's like a
graduation. The work is done. It's a
humbling experience.
Q: How did Max Muscle's
supplements help you at the
Winter Olympics?
A: To be honest, the supplementation
for me has more to do with my
journey to the games ... I look at
it like a retirement account ... I've
continued to use their supplements,
continued to make the deposits, it's
what I took over the course of eight
years that helped me build the wealth
of htness that allowed me to make the
team and separate me from the others
who didn't make it the team. ... As
hard as I train, and for as many years
as I've trained, I could not have
done it without Max Muscle.

GOALS
Nauricio hghts at 1+0 pounds and runs
155 pounds between hghts cutting
weight over the 8-week training camp
prior to the next big event. Currently he
spends his mornings completing drills
and running, in the afternoons he trains
in the boxing ring.
The boxer refuels between training
sessions with a combination of Max
Muscle products such as MaxPro, Max
ARM, Iso Extreme and Pro BCAAs. These
products help him fuel and recover for
another hard training session.
The next hght on his schedule is
the July 12, 201+ World Welterweight
Title, which will take place in Las Vegas,
Nevada. When asked why he hghts so
hard, Nauricio said conhdently, ¨You
want to win, you want to be the best.”
TRAINING TIPS
1. Occasionally shock your muscles by
doing a burnout set where you do as
many reps as you can until you get to
muscle failure.
2. Don't be afraid to try new workouts,
this allows you to work new muscle
groups.
3. Make your morning workouts an
important part of your day. Just get up
and do it. If you make it a part of your
daily routine, it makes it a bit easier to
do. MS&F

Mauricio Herrera, 33, of Riverside,
California is a professional welterweight
boxer and sponsored Team Max athlete
for Max Muscle Sports Nutrition. As the
previous holder of the IBF International and
the WBC USNBC State Title, he knows
what it takes for his body to train hard 3
to 4 hours per day in preparation for an
upcoming fight and he focuses on good
nutrition and quality Max Muscle products.
“Using Max Muscle products helps refuel
my body," Mauricio said. "You are putting
good ingredients into your body, you feel
strong; it’s what your body needs! You feel
great.”
Having boxed since he was 13 years
old before boxing professionally for the
past six years, Mauricio said his passion
for the sport is just "a part of my
life and something I can’t do
part time.”
EARLY YEARS
Mauricio started boxing
at 13 with his brothers
Albert and Daniel. His
parents found it was a
great inexpensive way for
their boys to work out all that
extra energy young boys typically have.
Each had an inexpensive pair of boxing
gloves and would go at it giving the
family tons of entertainment in the
process.
The boys had natural talent though
and eventually their mom took them to
a local church gym and Rudy Garavitor
started training them. The boys would
spar with each other, study boxing tapes
and work out at home in the family
garage.
At 18, Nauricio started his amateur
career training under Garavitor until he
was 25 years old. At 27, Nauricio went
pro and began training with current
manager, Willy Silvia. !n the meantime,

MAXPRO- Consuming enough protein each
day can be the difference between getting results and
not. MaxPro is comprised of a blend of whey protein
concentrate, whey protein isolate and casein protein.
Whey protein is an excellent source of glutamine,
glycine and the branched chain amino acids leucine,
isoleucine and valine. Whey protein transits the
stomach quickly for fast absorption by the intestines,
making it ideal to consume post-exercise to speed recovery. Rich
amounts of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, are contained in whey
protein. Glutathione is involved heavily in metabolic detoxification, and
levels of glutathione have been shown to decrease with exercise.
Peptides from whey protein have also shown to enhance the activity of
our immune system.
Recently, whey protein has received attention for being effective in
weight loss and reducing body fat. A newly published research study
had this to say about whey: “Healthy, overweight and obese individuals
participated in the double-blind, randomized clinical trial ingesting a
whey protein shake twice daily for 23 weeks. Participants were provided
no dietary advice and continued to consume their free-choice diets
throughout the study period. At the end of the 23 weeks, subjects in the
whey protein group lost statistically significantly more body weight, fat
free mass and waist
circumference compared to
the other groups consuming
a similar soy protein or an
isoenergetic amount of
carbohydrate (placebo).”
Casein protein comprises 80
percent of the protein found
in milk and does not clear
the stomach as fast as
whey protein. It is a slower
digesting protein, often
referred to as a “time-
released” protein, making
it a good choice to add to
whey protein and to
consume prior to bedtime
when you will be in a
fasting state.
GLUTAMATRIX- Glutamatrix is formulated with three different sources of glutamine, each easy
to use and providing individual benefits for our body. GlutaMatrix helps to speed recovery by enhancing
immunity, accelerating muscle repair and improving brain function. Here are some highlights:
s L-glutamine is easily absorbed into the blood stream, allowing for quick absorption and
immune function

VIT-ACELL ENERGY- Vitamins
and minerals play essential roles in most metabolic
processes in our body. They act as anti-oxidants,
co-enzymes and catalysts playing roles in a
number of chemical reactions. Vit-Acell Energy,
which comes in a delicious citrus flavor, is a natural
liquid nutrition supplement that provides 100
percent or more of 13 essential vitamins and
essential minerals. It also contains a natural juice blend
loaded with antioxidants, 100 mg of colloidal minerals and
energizing herbal extracts such as green tea, ginkgo biloba,
grape seed extract, ginseng, citrus bioflavonoid extract, rutin
powder and herperidin extract. Vit-Acell Energy also provides
100 mg of caffeine coming from green coffee bean extract,
guarana extract, yerba mate extract and kola extract making
it a perfect choice for your morning multi-vitamin. Taking a
liquid vitamin offers even more benefits such as:

ESSENTIAL OMEGA- Most of
us know by now how important it is to supplement
with essential fatty acids. Essential Omega is
simply the best way to do it. Some of the features
and health benefits include the following:

berries their deep bluish-purple color. A study published in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found that the extract from the anthocyanin-
rich bog blueberry protected human skin cells that had been exposed to UV radiation. “When your cells are flush with antioxidants, as well as healthy
fats, hydration and omega-3 fatty acids,” explains Alexis Wolfer, founder of TheBeautyBean.com and author of The Recipe For Radiance, “you are
protecting cells as much as possible for all of the disease-causing free radicals that it comes in contact with on a daily basis.” Include blackberries,
blueberries or raspberries three to four times per week as part of your daily fruit servings.

Green tea is popular all over the world, and its
numerous health benefits make this beverage
a wise choice. The presence of green tea
polyphenols (or GTPs) are effective protection
against the sun’s UV rays, though you’ll need to
drink five to six cups per day to achieve the same photo-
protective effect that was observed in studies on green tea’s efficacy
in this regard. Try a decaf version to avoid jitters, dehydration and
other negative side effects from too much caffeine. MS&F
A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology
found that subjects who consumed lycopene-rich
tomato paste were protected from UV damage
signihcantly more than their counterparts who did not
ingest lycopene. Grabbing a wedge of watermelon this
summer will provide both a healthy dose of lycopene and keep your body
hydrated – a must if you are logging more hours outdoors working out or
just enjoying the warm weather. "Remember,” warns Wolfer, “we’re not
talking about these foods replacing your sunscreen, but boosting the body’s
ability to hght free radicals from the inside out." A serving of watermelon
(about one cup, diced) lends an average SPF boost of about 3.
Chocoholics, rejoice! Chocolate that is high in flavanol content (70 percent or more raw cocoa) can
protect your skin from damaging rays from the sun. A 2009 study found that subjects who were given
high flavanol chocolate over a 12-week period experienced significant sun-protecting benefits while
those who were given chocolate low in flavanol content did not experience any benefit.
To reap the same benefits as the study participants, you’d have to consume more than 3.5 dark
chocolate bars and more than 52 grams of fat daily! Instead, try eating just two ounces of
dark chocolate, suggests Wolfer, and adding a tablespoon of raw cacao powder to your
coffee or smoothie.
Cocoa extract supplements are another great-tasting,
low-calorie way to add an extra flavanol boost to
your pre or post-workout drink. Extra benefit for
athletes: cocoa flavanols are great for circulation
and help keep blood vessels and arteries flexible as
we age.

compete against other professionals.
When the day is done and the performance is over, after the exhilaration of
competition ends, it is normal to feel exhausted, tired and wiped out. You may
even ask yourself, “how long do I really want to keep doing this?” These are the
times that call for good food in order to renew, repair and re-energize for the next
round of competition.
Even good food can be healthy. Start with lean protein to renew and repair tired
muscles and add carbs that give maximum energy with the greatest blood sugar
balance. Some of the leanest proteins include chicken breast, ahi tuna, bison and
wild boar. Energizing, slow-releasing carbs include sweet potatoes, barley and quinoa
pasta.
Celebrating dads everywhere in June, this recipe let’s you get your grill on while
stepping over to the wild side. Wild boar sausage is steamed in a cast iron skillet on
the grill, sliced and tossed with quinoa spaghetti. A healthy dad’s dream!
Many thanks to Chef Aaron Anderson of Harlow’s Cuisine in San Juan Capistrano,

RENEW, REPAIR
RE-ENERGIZE
Æ
For Sundried Tomato Pesto
(Makes about 1½ cups)
• 20 sundried tomato halves, drained
• 1 clove garlic
• Fine zest of ½ lemon
• Squeeze of lemon juice
• Pinch of crushed red pepper
• 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
• 1½ teaspoons fresh oregano leaves
• 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar
• Pinch of sea salt
• Pinch or two of cracked black pepper
• ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
DIRECTIONS: Place all ingredients except olive oil in
a food processor. Begin processing and drizzle in olive
oil and process until smooth.
For wild boar and pasta
• 1 medium white onion, sliced
• 1½ pounds wild boar sausage (or substitute chicken,
turkey or pork sausage if you'd prefer)
• 1 pound quinoa pasta
• 1 cup loosely packed freshly chopped basil
• Fresh grated Parmesan cheese (about 1 tablespoon
per serving)
DIRECTIONS: According to package directions,
prepare water for quinoa pasta. Preheat grill to medium
heat. Heat medium to large cast iron skillet on grill
until just getting hot. Place onion in the cast iron skillet
(preferably one that has a lid, or use another cast iron
skillet to create a “lid”), cover with lid, and sweat
about 2 minutes. Add sausage and ¾ cup water, cover
and reduce heat to medium low. Allow to steam for
about 20 minutes. Slide lid to the side to release some
of the heat and cook an additional 10 minutes or until
onion has a nice caramelized color and most of the
water has cooked out.
While sausage is cooking, bring pasta water to a boil
and add pasta. Cook according to package directions,
until pasta is al dente. Drain, drizzle with olive oil and
set aside.
Slice sausage into rounds. Toss pasta with sundried
tomato pesto, sausage and onion. Toss in fresh basil
and top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese when
serving.

Recovery is Everything
If you’re serious about fitness, you know that maximizing
recovery is the key to reaching your goals. This holds true
whether you’re a bodybuilder, team sport athlete, runner or
weekend warrior. Recovery is the key to building muscle,
strength, power, endurance and improving body composition.
You’re only as good as your next workout, and your next workout
can only be 100 percent if you are rested, fueled and ready to
give it your all. Quality nutrients from food and supplements can
help maximize recovery, and therefore, your results.
We will look at four ways of improving recovery: a sound
nutrition plan, post-workout nutrition, sleep quality and natural
hormone boosters.
How to reclaim your performance through optimized nutrition.
A Sound Diet and
Post-Workout Nutrition
First and foremost, a solid,
whole-food based nutrition
plan must be put into place
to maximize performance
and recovery. Your body
assimilates nutrients from
IRRGV PXFK PRUH HI¿FLHQWO\ WKDQ
it does from synthetic vitamins.
Plus, taking in garbage only hinders
your body from reaching its maximum
Æ
53 JUNE 2014 ı WWW.MAXMUSCLE.COM
potential, even if you are getting all the
essential nutrients through a few good
meals and quality supplements.
Choose quality proteins that are
complete (contain all essential amino
acids), and have a high bioavailability.
Studies support pre- and post-workout
protein of a high biological value as
benehcial to recovery and muscle
protein synthesis. Poultry, meat, eggs
and hsh should be the primary sources.
Supplementary protein sources can
include protein powders and bars, and
incomplete sources from nuts, beans
and vegetables. If tolerated, dairy can
be a good addition. Protein should be
included with every meal. Daily total
intake for athletes as recommended by
the NSCA is 1.2g to 2g per kg of body
weight daily, depending on training
intensity, sport type, overall health and
total daily caloric intake.
Fats are a dietary necessity in order
to support hormone and adrenal
function, cellular repair and brain
and nervous system health. Include
high-quality saturated and unsaturated
sources, such as avocado, nuts and
nut butters, coconut oil, whole eggs,
all-natural hormone-free meats and
wild-caught hsh.
Carbohydrates are an essential
macronutrient. However, the amount
and type may differ depending on
individual tolerance, fat and protein
intake, diet history and sport type.
Many athletes are now employing
grain-free and starch-free diets and
choosing to get carbohydrates and
hber from vegetables, nuts, and
fruits. Calories from carbohydrate may
be displaced with protein and fat
calories to spare glycogen and
maintain energy. The NSCA
Sports Nutrition Program
recommends the majority
of carbohydrates come
from nutrient-dense,
low glycemic choices.
NSCA suggests
high glycemic
carbohydrates
immediately
post-workout to
quickly restore lost
glycogen. Endurance
athletes will require
more calories from
carbohydrates –
perhaps 60-65 percent
of daily caloric intake –
than strength and power
athletes, who can take in 45-55 percent
carbohydrates without negligible effects
on performance and recovery. Some
athletes thrive on a lower carb intake,
so individual tolerance and diet history
must be included in determining ideal
amounts of carbohydrates.
If you’re an endurance athlete or an
elite athlete training multiple times a
day, glycogen restoration post workout
will be a concern. Strength athletes,
bodybuilders and weekend warriors,
however, will get adequate glycogen
restoration when implementing a
complete nutrition plan 24/7. Carbo-
hydrates consumed post-workout have
shown to enhance muscle protein
synthesis, which is a goal of physique
and strength athletes. However, taking
in enough carbohydrates over the
course of the day will help replenish
glycogen as well.
There are some solid supplements
that have been shown through multiple
studies over time to assist with
recovery. L-glutamine is a top
choice. This vital amino acid
has been shown to be necessary in
times of injury and illness. Supplemental
glutamine has been shown to delay
fatigue as well as improve time to
recovery. Doses are extremely varied,
with anywhere from 1g to 30g daily
being administered. According to a
2008 risk assessment in the Regulatory
Toxicology and Pharmacology
publication, Observed Safe Levels
(OSL) of l-glutamine supplementation
was noted at 14g daily. Most athletes
supplementing with glutamine take
a divided dose 2 to 3 times daily,
including post-workout.
Branched chain amino acids, or
BCAAs, are a popular bodybuilding
supplement. The amino acids with a
branched chain structure are leucine,
isoleucine and valine. These three
aminos comprise 35 percent of the
essential aminos found in muscle
protein. According to a 2008 study in
the Journal of Sports Medicine and
Physical Fitness, BCAA supplementation
before and after exercise was shown
to decrease exercise-induced muscle
damage, enhance muscle protein
synthesis and boost the immune
system.
Max ARM (Anabolic Recovery Matrix)
is a great post-training supplement
that delivers all of these essential
recovery nutrients – and more – in an
easy-to-mix drink for quick assimilation
after your workout. Max Muscle
franchisee and NPC National htness
competitor Erica Baker-Cruikshank
said ARM is “absolutely the best
muscle growth product. With the
combination of creatine and protein,
along with glutamine and fast-acting
carbohydrates,
it promotes
instant muscle
recovery.” In
particular,
ARM touts highly recommended
ingredients that include l-glutamine
and glutamine peptides, BCAAs,
citrulline malate, 19g of waxy maize
carbohydrates and 28g of high-quality
whey protein isolate and concentrate.
Quality Sleep and
Natural Hormone Enhancement
In today’s busy world, eight hours
of quality sleep every night is a rare
occurrence. Work, family time, life and
training make it so that most people
fall somewhere between 5 and 7 hours.
If you can, try to make up for it with
7-9 hours at least two nights a week,
perhaps on the weekend. In addition to
quantity, there are measures you can
take to make sure your 40 winks are
restful and of the highest quality.
Wind down at night by turning
off the TV and media at least 30
minutes before you hit the pillow, as
According to a 2008 study in

work, errands and your Facebook status
can keep you from falling asleep and

staying away from your cell phone every

There are many supplements available
that can enhance your ability to fall
asleep as well as the quality of sleep
you’ll get. Many of these supplements
also help with natural hormone
production, since sleep is a major time
when hormone replenishment takes
place.
ZMA is a combination of zinc
aspartate, magnesium
aspartate and vitamin
B6. ZMA has been taken as a natural
testosterone booster and a way to
enhance relaxation and quality of sleep.
USDA studies have shown that 70
percent of Americans aren’t getting the
minimum requirements of zinc, while
less than 40 percent are getting enough
magnesium. Additionally, increased
exercise may lead to a higher loss of
these nutrients, possibly making them

recover quickly and more fully.
Why can’t you just take zinc,
magnesium and B6? The form of these
nutrients must be aspartate, and the
ratio is essential to getting the desired
results of hormone production found in
studies. This makes a ZMA supplement
different from
simply taking all
three nutrients. In
regards to sleep
improvement,
magnesium
alone can help.
WebMD states

stomach 30 to 60 minutes prior to
sleep. Calcium can affect the absorption
of magnesium, so do not take ZMA or
magnesium supplements with foods
containing calcium.
Melatonin is a hormone that helps
regulate the sleep and wake cycle.
It does this by slowing metabolic
functions, lowering body temperature
and causing drowsiness. Melatonin is
natural and non-habit forming. This
supplement has shown mixed results
in studies, but many individuals have

are 3-5mg 15 to 30 minutes before you

CNS Black also has ingredients that
act as precursors to growth hormone,

MTX
MTX was created to be the sister product to 2TX for
testosterone support. MTX’s innovative and evidence-
based formula is driven by the premier patented
ingredient Myotestoserone. Myotestosterone has been
shown in rigorous clinical studies to signihcantly increase
testosterone levels in healthy men. MTX delivers clinically
validated doses of Myotestosterone along with powerful
synergistic ingredients to get the results you expect
from a top-shelf Max Muscle product. Whereas 2TX is
primarily herbal based, using the all-natural, plant-based,
Testofurenol and Testofen as its core root ingredients
(in addition to its own synergistic blend of ingredients),
the Myotestosterone in MTX is sourced from an entirely
different ingredient, D-Aspartic Acid. D-Aspartic Acid
(DAA) is a physiological amino acid occurring principally in
the pituitary gland, neuroendocrine tissues and the male
testes. MTX’s own version of this, Myotestosterone, is so
potent that in many cases it has been shown to take effect
in as little as three days!
WHO IS IT FOR? MTX shares a similar core audience
and intended user base as 2TX. The primary concern
and thus objective of MTX is to aid in the production of
testosterone through natural means. In fact, studies have
shown that through natural means, MTX and 2TX – when
combined – can work in conjunction to "free" a higher sum
of molecules for the body’s testosterone production. It’s
also a good idea to try one or the other to see which one
garners the greatest effect from your body. In most cases,
users should feel tangible benehts from both. !f this is
the case, the best way to bulletproof your hormone levels
and quality of life is to take them both. However, as with
any new dietary supplement, be sure to contact your local
certihed nutrition coach for proper dosing and safety.
NITRO 2
Masterfully formulated to promote the body’s production
of nitric oxide (NO), this scientihcally-based formula
is designed to provide insane muscle pumps, intensity
and performance. Max Nitro 2 is composed of a rapid
responding molecular matrix of powerful ingredients to
promote the production of nitric oxide by supporting
the key enzyme responsible for this process in athletic
performance called endothelial NOS, or eNOS. Max
Nitro 2 is your key product for peak strength performance

ketoglutarate (A-AKG) is a powerful
and special form of arginine resulting
in dramatic NO release. A-AKG has
also been shown to promote growth
hormone and insulin secretion for
additional anabolic effects. Arginine
ketoisokaproate and arginine
monohydrate HCL provide the other
two forms for boosting NO levels.
WHO IS IT FOR? Max Nitro 2 was
designed with a full spectrum of users
in mind, ranging from the weekend
warrior all the way to the professional
athlete. Essentially, anyone looking
for a competitive edge or serious
advantage in achieving their own
personal goals is a prime candidate.

Creatine Effective as an Antioxidant
During Resistance Training

Researchers from the Laboratoria de Fisioilogia, UFCSPA/Porto, Alegre, Brazil
set out to test that creatine supplementation may provide antioxidant activity by
scavenging Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) since this has not yet been described in
the literature. They investigated the effect of creatine monohydrate supplementation
associated with resistance training over maximum strength gain and oxidative stress
in rats. Forty male rats were randomly assigned into 4 groups: Sedentary (SED),
Sedentary + Creatine (SED-Cr), Resistance Training (RT) and Resistance Training +
Creatine (RT-Cr). Results from this 8 week study showed greater strength gains in the
SED-Cr, RT and RT-Cr groups compared to the SED group. The RT-Cr group showed the
highest maximum strength gain when compared to other groups.
Researchers concluded creatine to be an effective antioxidant
with supplementation alone
and also when it was
associated with resistance
training. (Stefani GP,
