HOW THE COLD WAR
STARTED
Theory 1: U.S. and U.S.S.R couldnt
agree on what a rebuilt Europe should
look like. Started tension and bitter rivalry
between Soviet Union and United States.

Theory 2: During WWII- Soviet Union
wanted the Americas to open a second
European front earlier in the war. America
secretly developed a atomic bomb and
soviet spies and stole the plans and
began to manufacture their own atomic
bomb.
CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS
(1962)
U.S. caught Russia building nuclear missile bases in Cuba just 90 miles from
U.S. soil.
Kennedy vs. Khrushchev
Sent 100000 troops deployed to Florida for a possible invasion of Cuba.
Naval vessels sent to Caribbean.



CONSEQUENCES OF THE
COLD WAR
Soviet Union expanded and took over
other countries on its drive into
Germany to overthrow Hitler.
Stalin promised and hold elections to
these countries so they could
determine own future.
Stalin held free elections in the Soviet
occupied land. Candidates who did not
back the Soviets were either jailed,
killed, or bribed.
NATO
(North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
Alliance among many nations to ensure safety against communist threats.
Warsaw
Pact
The treaty called on the member states to
come to the defense of any member
attacked by an outside force.
A pact that put the Soviets in command of the armed
forces of the member states.
HOW COLD WAR AFFECTED
OTHERS
AFGHANISTAN
The Soviet invaded Afghanistan in order to create a Soviet government in
Afghanistan. Over 100,000 Soviet troops swept into the nation. Soviet communism
collapsed.
VIETNAM
Vietnam War- North Vietnam (Communist) wanted to invade South Vietnam
(Democracy) in 1955
American pledges its forces to South Vietnam after France suffers from defeat.
In 1975, American withdraws from South Vietnam due to a variety of reasons.
KOREA
Korean War- North Korea (Communists) crossed 38
th
parallel and began to invade
South Korea (Democracy)
North Koreans used aircraft and tanks to sweep through South Korea. Only city left was Pusan.
General Douglas McArthur suspected the North Korean Lines were weak and vulnerable to
attack.

DUCK AND
COVER
Duck and cover is a method of protection for
yourself against nuclear explosions.
United States government taught the school
children this method to ensure their safety.
