Battenkill Conservancy Names
Sally B. Tefft,
Greenwich Resident & Businesswoman as Community Citizen
Battenkill Conservancy will present its annual Community Citizen Award to
long time Greenwich resident and businesswoman, Sally B. Tefft.
The sharp-minded, and sprite nonagenarian who
moved to Greenwich in 1941 will be presented
with the award at The Battenkill Runs Through
It Beach, Music & Food Festival that takes
place on
Saturday, May 31st from 1- 6 PM
at the Greenwich Town Beach.
Up until last fall, Mrs. Tefft was actively in-
volved in running one of the oldest independently
published newspapers in the country, the Green-
wich Journal Salem Press and served as Publisher
Emeritus during the papers transition to new
ownership. Originally from Connecticut, Ms
Tefft attended Middlebury College in Vermont
where she met her future husband, Richard S. Tefft,
son of one of the papers original publishers and
partners. In 1941, the newly married couple re-
turned to Greenwich where she has lived ever
since. She remembers her first few years in the
Village as the United States entered WWII and
how residents took precautions by turning off all the lights. In between raising four
children, she began working at the paper, first helping with collating duties and later
with advertisers in the Troy area. In 1969 when the Journal Stationers (then located on
Hill Street) began selling school supplies, she began working full time. Taking on
more responsibilities, she has ensured the paper provided uninterrupted service through
its various management transitions right up until last years sale of the paper to Atticus
Communications. She recently retired from her final position as Publisher Emeritus
believing the ownership transition is now complete. Many in the village of Green-
wich can attest to her work ethic, her commitment to the paper and her daily walks to
the papers former office on Salem Street from her current home on Church Street.
The Battenkill Conservancy chose Ms. Tefft as the recipient of this years award
based on her nearly 75 years of community service to the area and her recognition of
the Battenkill as one of the areas most important natural resources. Over the years
the paper has featured the Battenkills importance to the community as both a recre-
ational and economic driver for Washington County. She has many fond memories of
bringing her children to the beach and how its was always being well maintained with
qualified lifeguards. When asked about her thoughts on the river, her response the
Battenkill has been a wonderful friend.
Mrs. Tefft will be presented with the award the day of the festival, Saturday, May 31,
2014 at approximately 3:00 PM.
The Battenkill Conservancy is an all-volunteer, non profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhanc-
ing the Battenkill watershed through education, conservation, advocacy and the River Watch Program. The
Battenkill Conservancy is managed by a Board of Directors and maintains an office in Cambridge, New York.

NEW LIFE FOR THE BATTENKILL KITCHEN- The Bat-
tenkill Kitchen is now part of the Courthouse Community Center,
and an astounding group of food enthusiasts is breathing new life
into the venture. A hands-on committee has met regularly to dis-
cuss new possibilities. The group steering the kitchen in a new
direction includes Tom Kerr, Majken Sellar, Dottie Schneider and
Tara Hughes. Recently, Tom, Majken and Dottie devoted count-
less hours reorganizing the kitchen and providing it with a fresh
coat of paint including colorful new accents. The inviting environ-
ment has attracted new classes and instructors including a beer-
making class offered on April 25 that was filled to capacity. The
new Battenkill Kitchen will be taking part in the Salem Town Wide
Tag Sale. The Kitchen will be open on Saturday, May 24, offering
a nice selection of merchandise. However, there are never enough
items for an event like this and merchandise or monetary contri-
butions from supporters would help the sale greatly. Donations
may be dropped off at the Kitchen between 9 am and noon on
May 24 please call ahead at 854-3032. The Kitchen is located
right behind the Salem Courthouse Community Center at 58 East
Broadway across from the school.

HENRY COLLEGE- Emory & Henry College has equipped its
graduates well with the tools to lead lives of integrity, according to
the founder of the Church Health Center in Memphis, Tenn., the

vided lessons in honesty, kindness and service. But, he said, "From
this point forward, you will be your own moral compass." The
Church Health Center cares for more than 58,000 low-income
and uninsured patients annually without relying on government fund-
ing. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income, and no
one is turned away.

the French & Indian War Encampment at Rogers Memorial Park,
4928 Lake Shore Drive, Bolton Landing, NY 12814 on June 14 &
15, cost is FREE! Lake George was the all-important water high-

Commander, the Marquis de Montcalm, gathered troops at this spot
to prepare for the attack against the British at Fort William Henry in
1757. This victory proved to be a pivotal moment in the history of
our country. Visitors to the encampment will experience the camps
as they prepare for war and witness the daily life of the soldiers and
camp followers. Battles between the bateaux and shore forces with
cannon will take place at 2:00pm each day. Sutlers will offer 18th
century wares. In addition to the battle and childrens activities

CHEESE AND SPIRITS- Nettle Meadow Farm, a
goat and cheese dairy, that produces highly-acclaimed
and award-winning cheeses, invites regional makers of
wine, beer and cider to participate in a cheese and spir-
its pairing in the loft of the farms historic barn on Sat-
urday, June 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Almost mid-way
between Lake George and Gore Mountain/North Creek,
the pairing, coupled with Martins Lumber Woods Walk
held nearby earlier in the day, should draw a significant
number of tourists from both regions. Those interested
in showcasing their beverages should contact the orga-
nizers as soon as possible in order to be listed on the
event website and in other advertising and so Nettle
Meadow can find suitable cheeses to pair with each
beverage. Please email Cheese@NettleMeadow.com
or PersisGranger@aol.com to indicate interest and ob-
tain more details. Participants will be required to dis-
play appropriate permits at the event. The Nettle

year to promote local agri-business.
SAVE VAN EXPANDS SERVICE- The Salem Area Van
Endeavor (SAVE) van, under the management of the Salem
Courthouse Community Center, has expanded its service to help
meet the needs of Salem area residents. A short while ago, the
only pharmacy in Salem closed its doors. Many older residents
no longer drive, and this has posed a serious problem for them.
The SAVE van will transport passengers to the Greenwich CVS
on Tuesdays and the Granville Rite Aid on Thursdays. Those
who have transferred their prescriptions to the Rite Aid in
Cambridge may obtain assistance as well. SAVE is a joint venture
organized and supported by Salem-area churches, civic
organizations and businesses. There is no charge for this service,
but donations are always welcome. Passengers are picked up at
their home, and assistance is provided where needed. To
participate in this wonderful service, please call the SAVE
dispatcher (Ken White) at 854-7497 or the CCC at 854-7053.
NEW ART EXHIBIT- The Saratoga County Historical Society
today announced the new art exhibit, Local Beauty by landscape
artist, Takeyce Walter, at Brookside Museums Long Room Gallery
from May 20-June 27, 2014. Walter, a Saratoga County artist
and art instructor, will display some of her works in oil and pastel
that feature the rural landscape of upstate New York, the
Adirondacks, Cape Cod, and Vermont. We are very excited to
display Takeyce Walters paintings, said Brooksides curator,
Kathleen Coleman. Walter donated a painting of the Neilson
House (at the Saratoga Battlefield) to the museums collection a
few years ago. Since then Ive wanted to display more of her
beautiful landscapes. We are focusing on female artists in 2014,
so the timing is perfect. Walter has been documenting her art
process on her personal blog at http://takeyceart.com/home/blog/
. Her work will remain on display at Brookside until June 27. A
public reception will be held on Friday, June 6 from 5 8 pm as
part of Ballston Spas First Friday event. The Saratoga County
Historical Society at Brookside is a non-profit organization located
at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa that inspires community
memory by telling the story of Saratoga County through engaging
exhibits and interactive programs. Brooksides programs and
services are made possible in part by the New York State Council
on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the
New York State Legislature. For more information, please visit

, at 6:30 pm, rain or shine.
By conditioning hay with the Macerator, drying time can be shortened by
one whole day, with good conditions. Two grooved steel rollers spin at
different speeds to remove the waxy coatings and crush the entire length
of stems to speed up the drying rate. That can mean beating a rain storm
and harvesting hay before it gets over mature. Coarse stems are also
softened by this conditioner, making the hay more palatable to livestock.
Propionate hay preservative is another risk management strategy to beat
the weather and capture high quality in a hay crop. Questions and RSVP
appreciated by contacting Aaron Gabriel, 518-380-1496, adg12@cornell.edu,
Capital Area Agriculture and Horticulture Program, or Ashely Pierce, 518-
272-4210, arp253@cornell.edu, CCE Rensselaer Co.
