Israel warns it will hold Abbas accountable for Hamas - Tovah
Lazaroff and Khaled Abu Toameh -

Israel warned it would hold Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
"accountable" for Hamas terrorism as the reconciliation agreement between that
group and Fatah moved a step closer toward implementation on Thursday.

"He [Abbas] will be accountable for and responsible for [Hamas]'s violence against
Israel," an official in Jerusalem said.

Abbas asked Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah to form and head a Palestinian unity
government. It's a move that strengthens the possibility that the two groups might
really reconcile for the first time since Hamas ousted Fatah from Gaza in a bloody
coup in 2007.

Still, differences between Fatah and Hamas led to the postponement on Thursday of
the anticipated announcement that the new government had actually been formed.

Israel suspended talks with the Palestinians when the Fatah-Hamas unity deal was
announced and refused to negotiate with Hamas, which it calls a terrorist
organization bent on Israel's destruction.

A Palestinian source in Ramallah said the new unity government could be
announced next week.

Such an announcement would doom whatever fragile hope remains to resume the
peace process between Israel and the Palestinians, because Prime Minister
Binyamin Netanyahu's government refuses to negotiate with Hamas.

On Wednesday, US President Barack Obama omitted the Israeli-Palestinian conflict
in a major policy address he delivered in Annapolis, leading to speculation that the
US was pulling out of the peace process after an intense period of involvement.

On Thursday, WAFA, the official Palestinian News Agency, said Obama had sent a
letter to Abbas in which he stated his commitment to a negotiated peace process.

"As I emphasized during our meeting, the United States remains deeply committed
to a negotiated outcome between Palestinians and Israelis that results in an
independent, viable and contiguous Palestinian state living in peace alongside the
state of Israel," Obama wrote.

"I am hopeful we can continue to work closely together to achieve this goal and
further strengthen the bonds between our two people," the letter said.

Netanyahu's government had suspended talks with the Palestinians to protest
Fatah's decision to unify with Hamas, a group that has refused to recognize Israel or
renounce violence against it.

Still President Shimon Peres plans to meet Abbas at the Vatican on June 8, after
Pope Francis used his trip to the Holy Land earlier this week to invite both leaders to
join him there to pray for peace.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said on Thursday that the two had
accepted that the meeting would take place on a Sunday afternoon.

That morning the pope will be presiding at a Pentecost Sunday service in St. Peter's

Francis told reporters on the plane returning to Rome from Israel, that he was not
getting directly involved in the stalled Middle East peace process, something he said
would be "crazy on my part."

But, he said he hoped the prayer meeting, which comes after flailing diplomatic
efforts to end the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, would help create an atmosphere that
would assist the eventual resumption of talks.

"Courage is needed to do this and I am praying to the Lord very much so that these
two leaders, these two governments, have the courage to move forward. This is the
only path for peace," Francis said on the plane.

But an Israeli official warned that such talks would not be possible if the Fatah-
Hamas unity pact is cemented.

"Israel is concerned that Hamas will use this pact with the PA to strengthen its
presence in the West Bank and in so doing, become a graver threat to Israel and the
future stability of the Palestinian authority," the official said.

It said it planned to hold Abbas accountable for Hamas's actions.

"If after this marriage is consummated, there is fire from Gaza into Israel, Abbas will
have to understand that the government of Israel will be fully entitled to hold him and
his Palestinian Authority accountable for such attacks," the official said.

On Thursday, representatives of the two rival parties held discussions and
consultations in a bid to remove the obstacles facing the proposed unity

The two sides have yet to reach agreement on the foreign affairs and interior
portfolios in the unity government, the source added.

Moreover, Abbas's insistence on keeping Minister for Religious Affairs Mahmoud
Habbash in the government has prevented the two sides from reaching agreement
on the make-up of the government.

Abbas's decision to entrust Hamdallah with the task of forming a unity government is
seen as a way to avoid the crisis with Hamas over the line-up.

In Gaza City, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said the reconciliation with
Fatah would not become an alternative to "resistance" against Israel.

Haniyeh said the deal would allow Hamas to hold on to its weapons "and defend the
unity of our people in the face of occupation."

Haniyeh told reporters that the "resistance that liberated the Gaza Strip is also
capable of liberating the West Bank, Jerusalem and the rest of our land."

Americans fed stories - not truth - about Israel - Jim Fletcher -

Jim Fletcher laments when journalists aren't journalists

Some of us who aspire to be serviceable writers wonder about objectivity. Can we
be objective? Do we always reach first for truth? Did we shade reality with a
carefully crafted headline or even a single descriptive word that mischaracterizes an

I write quite a bit about the Arab-Israeli conflict, and last year an ideological
opponent in that long war accused me of having an agenda. I did chuckle; either he
was unaware that every human has an agenda, or he is aware and was trying to
throw me off the trail.

I suspect the latter.

Every writer/journalist has an obligation to try and find the truth in a story. If we don't,
we do a great disservice to readers.

So it is that I truly lament the efforts of Cameron Strang to subvert the truth by
writing and publishing horrifically one-sided versions of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The
latest missive illustrates - yet again - his penchant for framing the conflict in wholly
Palestinian terms and perspectives.

A story broke recently that was picked up by Strang and published in his Relevant
magazine about allegations that Israeli soldiers bulldozed 1,500 fruit trees belonging
to the Nassar family, near Bethlehem.

The problem is that the sources for the story are Al Jazeera and Facebook postings
by Daoud Nassar, whose family runs the farm.

Hardly credible when it comes to portraying the Israelis in any kind of realistic light.

In fact, three sources told me the uprooting of trees didn't happened at all. One said
that no Israel Defense Forces soldiers were seen in the area, and no dozers were
heard operating. Further, the only hard, physical evidence seems to be a pile of dirt,
under which the trees have allegedly been laid to rest.

So why would Strang publish his article and not cite any Israeli sources, such as an
IDF spokesman?

(In writing about this story, I have attempted to get quotes and perspective from
three Palestinian sources, including Palestinian evangelical Christian Sami Awad,
executive director of the Holy Land Trust in Bethlehem. They don't even answer my
calls or emails.)

Strang does what so many of his generation do when writing about controversial

They use narrative.

Narrative allows one to tell a story, of course. Storytelling isn't so much bothered by
facts and documentation, which, we're told, sort of bore people.

No, rather, the heartstrings of passionate Millennials, who long for social justice, are
pulled by sad tales of IDF abuse of Palestinians:
*IDF troops shoot Palestinian women and children, several of whom are trying to
make peace overtures.
*The Mossad laces chewing gum meant for Arabs with chemicals designed to make
them sex-crazed "zombies."
*Israel prevents food, medical aid and electricity from being made available to the
oppressed Gazans.

On and on it goes.

Furthermore, well-meaning Americans are given tours of the Palestinian territories in
which the PA arranges for interviews/teas/sleepovers with regular Palestinian folk
who are eager to read from the script that says the Nazi-like "occupation" is
strangling the Palestinians.

One does wonder, though, about the fervor with which Cameron Strang joins in the
demonization of Israel. A 2009 piece in Relevant recycled a British piece about
Israel harvesting organs of "dead Palestinians." No further context was provided,
including the fact that Israel owned up to the practice, had stopped years before and
when the harvesting was taking place Israeli organs were being harvested, as well.

Relevant's juicy headline for that one read "Israel's Reprehensible Organ Program."

You see what that does, don't you? It consigns Israel and the Jews to the realm of
Middle Ages stereotypes: scheming, bloodthirsty, ruthless.

Strang might deny that is his intent, but who could know? My repeated requests for
clarification or follow-up interviews are always rebuffed. In the latest one, the
publisher said it would be "pointless" to revisit discussion about his March/April
cover story, in which he pushed the "occupation" narrative to new heights.

I think the pushback he received from readers of that piece fostered an attitude of
"let's move on, nothing to see here." This includes Tricia Aven's devastating critique
of the cover story for CAMERA, the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East

Which raises the question: Why does Cameron Strang have a beef with Israel and
the Jews?

There is indeed a sinister side to this overall story.

And it's not the "occupation."

Iranian general vows to destroy Israel if US attacks - By Adiv
Sterman and Yifa Yaakov -

After wiping Jewish state off the map, Iran would turn its armies against America,
says deputy chief of staff of armed forces

A high-ranking Iranian official threatened Friday to destroy Israel should the US ever
attack the Islamic Republic.

Masoud Jazayeri, deputy chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, added that after
the Iranian regime was done wiping the Jewish state off the map, it would turn its
armies against the US.

"They [the US] know that aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran would
mean annihilation of Tel Aviv and spread of war into the United States," Jazayeri
said, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Jazayeri said that US President Barack Obama was a fool for stating that the US
was still considering taking military action against Iran to prevent it from acquiring
nuclear weapons.

"Had the US and its allies the capability to attack Iran they would not hesitate a
moment to carry out their barbaric act," the Iranian general asserted.

"Of course, it is surprising that Obama is not embarrassed to rehash his empty
words," he said.

Jazayeri further stated that he believes the "empire of money and weapons" is
nearing collapse.

In his foreign policy address this week, Obama reiterated that the US reserved "all
options" for thwarting Iran's nuclear program, but was relatively upbeat on a possible
diplomatic solution. "The odds of success are still long, and we reserve all options to
prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon," Obama said at West Point. "But for
the first time in a decade, we have a very real chance of achieving a breakthrough
agreement - one that is more effective and durable than what would be achieved
through the use of force."

Under an interim deal penned in November, Iran agreed to curb parts of its nuclear
program for six months in exchange for limited relief from crippling economic
sanctions. The agreement came into effect on January 20.

However, in a January interview, Obama maintained that even after the deal was
signed, all options - including a potential military strike - remained on the table.

Earlier this year, Jazayeri called Obama a "low-IQ US president," whose threats are
oft-cited punchlines in the Islamic Republic, particularly among children.

On Thursday, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commander Hossein
Salami claimed Washington's influence in the Middle East was growing weaker and
that the era of a "global US empire" was coming to an end.

A week beforehand, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed the
US was angered by Iran's opposition to "Western hegemony" and the "colonization"
of Middle Eastern countries.

The US "becomes confused when a certain people in an important country with a
very rich history and unique characteristics stands up to this ugly phenomenon of
dominating [countries]," Khamenei said during a ceremony at an Iranian military
facility, according to a translation provided by the Middle Eastern Media Research

"This is what angers the US, this is what unites the arrogant countries against Iran."

The supreme leader assured his audience that Iran would not be deterred by
Western threats, and would continue to extend the reach of its influence throughout
the globe.

"The [US] got angry, so let them," he said "Let them die in their anger."

Please read our earlier message below to find out how you can be a part of this
blessing, thank you!

As in the days of Noah?

Jesus spoke far ahead of his time relating to us what life would just prior to his
coming. He says in Matt. 24:37-38: "But as the days of Noah were, so also will the
coming of the Son of Man be. "For as in the days before the flood, they were eating
and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the
ark," (Gen.6-7).

Every day I scan the news for headlines relating to Bible prophecy and the End
Times and I have done this for nearly 35 years. In the early eighties, years before
the internet, I would go to the Library and head right to the newspaper section.
There I would read newspapers from all over the world, looking for prophetically
related headlines. It was scarce pickings in those days, maybe one or two a week, a
couple of dozen throughout the year; that were truly prophetic. Fast forward to 2014,
now, there are so many prophetically related headlines, that I have to decide which
one's to post and which one's to pass, or I would be at it all day long. It does not
take a rocket scientist to see that just as the Lord predicted, the time of the end
would be when all the signs converge and increase in intensity and frequency, like
birth pains.

Life will be normal until...

It will occur during a time of prosperity when people are buying, selling, marrying,
planting, and harvesting. This has to occur before the tribulation since the earth will
be devastated by the judgments and wrath of God during the tribulation period. For
example, Almost all the grass and trees will be destroyed and almost all the water
will be turned to 'blood' (undrinkable) Those will NOT be normal times. They ate,
drank, married right up until the time Noah entered the ark. Then the destruction of
the flood suddenly came and they were destroyed. In Noah's day there was plenty of
warning, but no preparedness. Why? Because they didn't heed him, they mocked.

It says they will be marrying and given in marriage. Today we see people being
married and divorced multiple times. This has attributed to our societies breakdown,
no commitment, no love.

Gen. 6:11-12 "The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with
violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had
corrupted their way on the earth." Today we live in a world constantly threatened by
terrorism, in our cities we have hate crimes, drive by shootings, mothers killing their
own infant children, parents killing their children, children killing parents, inhuman
behavior is becoming the norm, we have run a muck having no restraints.

Why? Because there is no law, no real accountability, it's lawlessness. The more
tolerance today the less morals we have. There is a relationship between the two,
no standard and anything goes. In Israel's apostasy at the end of the Book of judges
reads just as our society today, "everyone did what was right in their own eyes."
People go to suicide because they have no hope. Euthanasia is becoming an
accepted alternative. Light is called darkness and darkness is light. In Satanism up
is down, and down is up. It will be a time unlike any other where lawlessness will be
the way people live and we already see this occurring.

It is exactly this pattern of prophetic convergence that I want to show to the non-
believer in my new book and video - "The Storm Before the Calm" - but I need
your help to get it to print, please read my earlier post below, thanks!

The Storm Before the Calm

In between updating the daily news headlines and publishing the daily newsletter
and producing every video that we create, I have also been writing a new book.
Most of the videos that we produce are based on books that I have written. I am
really excited about this new book. It is very timely and deals with Bible Prophecy
and Current Events and how they are all happening and converging at the same
time. The title could change before it's published, but right now it is tentatively titled,
"The Storm before the Calm: A Pre-View of things to come." Before we started
producing videos, we used to only publish and sell our books. Not having a huge
budget, we were only able to self-publish our books, by the time we paid for the
book publishing and then added the cost to ship them to our customers, we actually
lost money on each book. So, we decided to get out of the book business and
thankfully we started making our videos. This was about ten years ago and a lot has
changed since then in the book publishing industry.

Now book publishing is cheaper and faster and way more efficient than it was ten
years ago. I have been researching all the book publishing services, trying to get an
estimate on production and pricing, they are all pretty much the same. The main
cost in most cases is for the initial shipment, the more books you can purchase, the
cheaper the cost. To get the best price and the best service we need to order at
least a 1,000 copies initially. The cost for 1,000 copies will be somewhere between
$4100 up to $4800 depending on the final number of pages, right now as I am
nearing the end I am at 210 pages. We will also turn this book into a video as I feel
that it will reach a lot of people in the world and help them connect the dots between
currents events and Bible Prophecy in a clear and exciting presentation that will
make it hard for any reasonable person to deny!

Book Excerpts

Below are a few pages from the book, this is still in raw form and not fully edited. I
just want to give you an idea of the direction of the book and what you can expect. It
will be cleaned up and polished before we go to print.

Excerpt #1

"About the time of the end, a body of men will be raised up, who will turn their
attention to the prophecies, in the midst of much clamor and opposition." - Sir Isaac

"Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I
am the Christ,' and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but
see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to
come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be
famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth
pains. (Matthew 24:4-9) - Jesus Christ

We are about to enter a time like no other time, a time that no man has ever seen, a
time like no other time in the history of this world, as a matter of fact we are about to
enter the end times. Since the dawn of mankind there have always been wars and
rumors of wars, earthquakes, famines, pestilences, disease, strange-weather and
false Christ's, just as Jesus predicted. Fast forward nearly 2,000 years since Jesus
made this prediction and you have today's headlines lining up exactly with the Word
of God. The big thing isn't that these events are happening today, it's that they are
all happening at the very same time and increasing in frequency and intensity just
like birth pains; and Jesus said when you see these things, know that I am near,
even at the door.

Never, in the history of the world have so many forces, including economic,
scientific, technological, ecologic, cultural, geopolitical, moral, spiritual and religion,
converged together to bring this world that's already teetering on the edge of the
abyss, to a point of no return.

Excerpt #2

"Now trending", has become a popular term in recent years. For a while, "now
trending," usually just focused on one event, like Hurricane Sandy for example. Now
a days, there are so many things trending at once, that it practically makes one's
head spin just trying to keep up with it all. Here are just a few things that are now
trending almost daily that in past years, hardly even showed up on the news radar.
Major earthquakes and tsunamis, powerful storms including hurricanes, cyclones
and tornadoes. Record heat temperature, record cold temperatures, record snowfall,
record rainfall, record flooding and extreme droughts, landslides and sink holes.

We are seeing a return of disease's once thought eradicated, like Polio, Malaria and
Tuberculosis along with ever resistant super-bugs that are becoming immune to
antibiotics. Newer virus's like MERS and H9N7 Avian bird flu are making headlines
along with mysterious new viruses, meanwhile we are still dealing with a global
AIDS epidemic along with cancer and many other diseases...

Excerpt #3

Our world is rapidly changing! With tremendous leaps of advancement in science,
technology, medicine, communication and information, our world should be getting
better and better. Instead, our world is on the brink of collapse, World War III could
breakout any day. Society in general and especially this generation of children, are
born into a society with almost no morals, where anything goes, there is no wrong or
right, just whatever feels good.

What used to be right, is now wrong, and what used to be wrong, is now right. We
have gone from wholesome family television shows like, "Ozzie and Harriet" and
"Father Knows Best" to the lesbian themed ABC Family show "The Fosters" and the
offensively titled, "$#*! My Dad Says". I am not a big Facebook user, but I do have a
Facebook page to reach out to as many people as possible. I am often shocked
when someone befriends me on Facebook and I read their profile and their likes.
They claim to be a Christian, but their profile often proves otherwise, with favorite
movies like "Knocked Up" and the "40 Year Old Virgin" and "Saw" and favorite
books like " Fifty Shades of Grey" - what kind of message are you trying to send?
Many parents these days, instead of leading and guiding their children and setting
an example, are letting their kids make their own decisions of what is right and
wrong. Do we really want the television and movie industry teaching our children
morality? No wonder our current generation of teens and young children are so
confused about what is right and what is wrong, even our churches are sending out
mixed messages or afraid to speak the truth on account of they might offend

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report' - Hal Lindsey -

Another mass killing shocked America last weekend. A young man went on a
premeditated and planned rampage near the University of California, Santa Barbara.
He stabbed to death three young men in his apartment, then shot two coeds at a
nearby sorority house and another young man at a streetside deli. He also wounded
13 others before taking his own life.

The frantic calls for more gun control began immediately. But the alleged killer, Elliot
Rodger, killed half of his victims with a knife instead of a gun. The point is, the tool of
destruction is not as critical as the cause of destruction.

The FBI defines "mass killing" as those having at least four victims. From 1900 to
1960, when there were very few gun laws if any, there were 28 "mass killings" in the
United States. From 1960 until today (54 years) with gun laws verging on draconian
in some cities and states, there have been 130 "mass killings." And this decade is
on pace to be the worst ever.

What's happening? Besides the near universal presence of psychotropic drugs and
mental health issues in these episodes, what is happening is that we are witnessing
the disintegration of our culture.

America is now largely a pagan society. Pagan societies are characterized by the
worship of evil and its manifestation -- Satan and his demonic minions. In popular
music, video games, television programs, even theme parks, Satan and his
influence (demons, witches, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, zombies and the
walking dead, monsters, over-the-top evil characters, and more) are standard fare.
In fact, in the minds of many of our youth, the more gruesome and evil the better!

The Apostle Paul warned of these days. He said, " the last days perilous times
will come." (2 Timothy 3:1) Then he goes on to list a catalog of attitudes and
attributes that could only have been culled from modern newspapers and daily
television shows and radio reports. It's not only uncannily accurate, it's downright
spooky the way Paul described America today.

And the rot isn't found just among our entertainment-crazed youth. If anything, it's
more devious and just as destructive among our adults and leaders. Witness the
scandal exploding within the Veterans Administration. I don't need to detail for you
the shocking revelations that have come our way the last few weeks or the obvious
and frightening parallels with the onrushing Obamacare. The disgusting aspect of
this callous and wanton mistreatment of our nation's heroes is that much of it was
perpetrated by bureaucrats to achieve cash performance bonuses or please their
superiors -- up to and including the President.

I fear that the corruption at the VA is merely a glimpse of the corruption running
rampant in our government -- at all levels -- and throughout the business, academic,
and entertainment worlds. I believe that one thing that has always defined the
United States and made us exceptional is that we were largely a corruption-free
society. In our everyday living, we don't have to pay bribes to everyone who has
authority over us. That's not the case in many nations, even many of our allies.

But corruption manifests itself in many ways. And it always destroys the foundation
that makes liberty, security, and prosperity possible in a nation. Integrity is that
foundation. Liberty dies with corruption because when people are no longer
trustworthy, they have to be watched more closely. But who watches the watchers?

Corruption, like a cancer, eventually kills the very body that gave it life. Proverbs
11:11 warns, "By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the
wicked it is torn down."

Though I was born as the Great Depression was setting in, most of my life has been
lived in America's halcyon days. Over my lifetime, the U.S. has endured many
challenges and hardships, but it has also risen to become the greatest power the
world has ever known. We have been blessed by God with success, prosperity, and
freedoms that no other nation in history has ever enjoyed. And during my lifetime, I
firmly believe America has been God's blessing to the world. We have stopped
forces of evil and secured liberty for untold millions. At times, we have virtually fed
the world. America has been the world's driving force for good in so many ways.

But America is something akin to the Land of Oz from Frank Baum's classic tale,
"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." In that story, Oz was a strange, exotic, and
wonderful place that seemed to promise more than it delivered. When all was
revealed, the wonderful "Wizard of Oz" turned out to be a fraud, an illusion full of fire
and smoke, but with no real power.

So, too, is America now. Once it was not only the most powerful nation on earth, but
perhaps its most trustworthy. I believe that today it is only a shell of its former self.
Fire and smoke with no real power. We've lost our focus on the things that are truly
important. Our allies don't trust us. Our enemies don't fear us. Women and
Christians can be repressed and persecuted around the world and we won't utter a
word of protest. But let a friend or foe fail to affirm the gay agenda and America will
go to the mat to make it pay a price.

But this downfall is not just a result of politics, even ideology. I believe much of the
blame lies squarely with the Church in America. The Book of Revelation describes
seven churches that would have the dominant characteristics of the seven future
stages of Church history. The seventh and final stage of Church history is that of the
Church of Laodicea.

Jesus described it by saying, "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot....
because you are lukewarm... I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, 'I'm
rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing' -- and do not know that you
are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked...." (Revelation 3:15-17) Isn't this a
perfect description of today's lukewarm Church? It isn't cold enough to be easily
identified as a false Church that has lost its fundamental purpose. And it is not hot
enough to preach the Gospel and make disciples no matter the cost in persecution
and sufferings for Christ's sake.

We have forgotten that it is either all about Him or not at all about Him. We've
sought to make Jesus a mere "feature" and not the driving force of our lives. We've
remade God and the Gospel into a simple means to selfish ends -- our own wealth
and pleasure. Too many have made prayer something we do when we're in trouble,
or when we're buying lottery tickets. Fellow Christians are suffering and dying
around the world and we fill our minds and mouths with the latest news about
people we don't even know.

The modern church is miles wide and inches deep. We try to convince the world that
they should accept us because we are like them, not because we have the Answer
or because we stand for something greater. America can only change when the
American Church changes, not before.

Security vs. Freedom -

Our dream of living in a completely free society is stymied by the necessity of having
borders. We are not "free" to randomly walk across those borders. We are not "free"
to go faster than the speed limit, as well as a myriad of other restrictions we call
"laws." For a "safe AND secure" society, the reality is that certain restrictions are

This changes over time. In times without threat, freedom can be bold. We can, if
only for a little while, release the grip on our vigilance of outside or inside
aggression. We enjoy the rest from the general distrust so much that when a threat
begins to arise, we resist awakening and proceed into a period of denial. At this
point, history usually takes the opportunity to wake and refocus us by providing an
event of sufficient shock and overt aggression as to prevent our continued "sleep."

We then go on high alert, deal with the threat and then gradually proceed back
through the cycle again. If we are lucky there are those that will remember as the
next cycle comes back around. The tendency is to forget. This is where history
starts repeating itself.

The Creation of Monsters

In the well-known movie, "A Few Good Men," Jack Nicholson plays a sad,
dangerous, but possibly necessary character who stays vigilant for society's security
when the rest of us "sleep well at night." He is portrayed as the "bad guy." He makes
seemingly immoral decisions under the justification of our common good.

This is the backside of the cycle of which we spoke. In the severe reaction to overt
threat, a society, if only temporarily, is willing to trade "freedom" for "security." In this
slice of the cycle there are people put in place and organizations created who are
given wide-ranging latitude to violate societal restrictions the rest of us must adhere

If they are successful in thwarting the threat, then the "end justifies the means" and
we go back to our peaceful existence. If it doesn't, we escalate the type and
"flexibility" of the resources until success is achieved.

The difficulty with bureaucracies, no matter how clandestine, is that they act just like
any organism. They have defense mechanisms that assure their survival and
continuity. We have many historical examples of this social reality.

History Still Repeats

In June of 1942, The enormous Japanese Imperial Fleet was directed to seize the
island of Midway. This move was a direct threat to Pearl Harbor and what small fleet
we had. We had to respond. The only advantage we had obtained was the breaking
of the Japanese communications code. With this electronic advantage we were able
to defeat a much larger fleet, which changed the balance of power in the Pacific for
the remainder of the war.

This success was followed closely by the breaking of the German codes that had a
similar outcome in Europe. Even in a time when electronic communication was in its
infancy, this small advantage underscored the importance of stealing, deciphering
and reading the communications of not only your enemies but anyone remotely

The National Intelligence Agency (NSA) evolved through other post-war
organizations who were tasked with this surveillance. It was formed in 1951 as an
umbrella under which to organized these many separate groups. It was tasked with
knowing what Russia, led by Joseph Stalin, and China, with which we were then
fighting, were saying within their electronic communication.

After World War II the electronic revolution was "jump started." But the threat was
still seen as from individual nation-states. The NSA focused on the internal
communications of those obvious nations that were suspect. This was the seminal
beginning of the NSA mandate "to know all."

As we have moved ever so more quickly into an electronically dominated world
culture, the NSA mission has not changed, but is has expanded. As types of new
electronic communication were created, and new creative ways of encryption
developed, it became necessary to expand in size and latitude. Remember, this was
all in response to a perceived threat to our national security interests.

The fear of what happened at Pearl Harbor has guided our security posture through
the Cold War and up to our present predicament in which there are no longer only
two nuclear powers, but many. Much like the Jewish reaction to the Holocaust, the
rallying cry was "Never again." Nagasaki and Hiroshima scared us as much as the
rest of the world. Never again would we be caught by surprise. The NSA was tasked
with ensuring this.

Having survived the Cold War era, we were drifting off into our collective peaceful
repose, when the unimaginable happened. The 9/11 attacks occurred. Over three
thousand Americans were killed, on American soil no less. We were jerked to
alertness. Clearly, the entire intelligence apparatus was taken by surprise. Our worst
fears were realized. An intelligence community that had protected us fairly well for
nearly 60 years had failed us again. Collectively we needed someone to blame.

In the immediate aftermath of this event we made many hasty decisions. Not only
did we allow passage of the Patriot Act, which greatly undermines individual rights,
but once again we broadened the scope and latitude of the Intelligence Community.
It should have been no surprise (and probably wasn't) to Congress and the rest of
the country that the NSA had been recording everything and everybody. We
allowed, asked for, and approved it all.

Maybe that was a different "space and time," but the bureaucracy only knows what it
has been tasked with. It strives to maintain that tact hoping that that will ensure its
continued existence. "Never again."

This in no way justifies violating the Constitutional protections we are afforded. But,
as a society, allowing, and cheering on the agencies that intimately do, and then
vilifying them for the very actions we condoned, is unfair. There are untold (literally
"untold") numbers of NSA agents that have died for this country trying to protect our
freedom to "rest in peace."

What we presently need to do is clean house. We need to clean it of the
bureaucracies that were an overreaction to events. We need to clean it of
organizations that were clearly for a different time and place. We need to sweep out
every corner. We need to pull every weed, no matter how stubborn and ingrown.
Most of all, we need to take responsibility for our nation's actions and reactions.

Take government spying seriously - Bill Wilson -

When I drive down a Maryland road where there is construction, I get angry. They
have on both sides of the road SUVs bought at taxpayer expense equipped with
radar and cameras. If you are going over the speed limit, they take a picture of your
license plate and send you a bill in the mail. They have the same things for red
lights, school zones (even when there is no school), and general traffic on high
traveled roads. The city brags about how much money it has brought in since
installing these cameras on public highways. I get angry because I believe it is an
invasion of my privacy. Public roads are owned by the public, not the government.
But the government has assumed that stewardship is ownership.

Part of where we went wrong in this country is by allowing the government to
assume that it owns things. The government in of itself would not be able to have
anything if not for the people it taxes. We the people pay taxes to the government
and it buys stuff with those taxes, but it is a steward--not an owner--of the public
trust. Notwithstanding, the trend in government is that it is the owner, provider,
inspector, investigator, and arbitrator of all things. This is very dangerous because
the basis of a free society rests on government being subservient to the people it
governs, governing by the consent of the people. The more government is allowed
to grow, the more power it assumes, the more personal it gets.

The Chicago Tribune reported a woman was cited by the Forest Preserve District for
not buying a permit for a dog park because of remarks she made on Facebook.
According to the story, "The citation arrived at her Bolingbrook home with a letter
explaining the ticket, an application for a dog park permit as well as a copy of her
social media post "admitting her guilt."" The victim of government spying had made
a comment on the Whalon Park Dog Park's group page that she was glad she had
not bought a pass and had not taken her dog there because of a kennel cough that
had been going around among dogs frequenting that park. Eventually, the citation
was withdrawn. But think of the resources spent.

If a government is so large that it is able to employ human and capital resources to
the extent of assuming a citizen's guilt, locating them, and fining them without due
process, that government is too big, too intrusive, and overtly tyrannical. There is no
probable cause, but rather an assumption of guilt. There is no due process because
the citizen is not given the opportunity to face his accuser. There is an invasion of
privacy because your personal effects are being violated without warrant. It is good
policy to obey the law, and to watch what you post in public forums and social
media. But don't buy the lie that the government owns the public. When you do, you
give up your Constitutional rights. As Jesus said in Matthew 24:4, "Take heed that
no man deceive you." Don't be deceived into thinking that you are guilty until proven

Just a Little Bit Longer - Greg Laurie -

They shouted to the Lord and said, "O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long
before you judge the people who belong to this world and avenge our blood for what
they have done to us?"
-Revelation 6:10

In Revelation 6 we read about those who were put to death for their faith. They are
in heaven, aware of the injustice, aware of the fact there were fellow servants still on
earth being mistreated. So they prayed this prayer to the Father: "O Sovereign Lord,
holy and true, how long before you judge the people who belong to this world and
avenge our blood for what they have done to us?" (verse 10). In other words, Hey,
Lord, this isn't right. When are You going to correct it?

Here was God's response to their prayers: "Then a white robe was given to each of
them. And they were told to rest a little longer until the full number of their brothers
and sisters - their fellow servants of Jesus who were to be martyred - had joined
them" (verse 11, NLT).

God's timing isn't always our timing. The Bible says that "He has made everything
beautiful in its time" (see Ecclesiastes 3:11).

It kind of reminds me of taking a trip with small children in the car. You are cruising
along, and an hour into the trip they ask, "When are we going to get there?"

What do you say? "We're almost there. A little bit longer."

The martyred tribulation saints were asking when they would be avenged. And God
was saying, Just a little bit longer.

We say, "Lord, when are You going to come?" He says, Just a little bit longer. When
is judgment going to come?" Just a little bit longer. "When will my prayer be
answered?" Just a little bit longer. Hang on, now. I am in control. I am doing
everything according to My perfect will.

Know this: God's delays aren't necessarily His denials. So keep praying.

Maranatha and Keep Looking Busy - Alf Cengia -

One of the happiest, providential moments that happened to me after I left my New
Age life behind was finding a great Christian Book Store. It had an extensive
selection of Biblical commentaries, apologetics works and books on eschatology. It
often seemed as if a particular book appeared on the shelves just when I needed to
read it.

I can remember the Saturday afternoon I saw J. Dwight Pentecost's Things To
Come sitting there on the shelf, asking me to buy it. Because it was imported from
America and this was an Australian store, the price tag was relatively hefty. But after
a perusal of its pages, I knew it was well worth the cost. I spent the rest of that
Saturday buried in that book.

The term "things to come" is found in several instances in Scripture and inspired the
title of Dr. Pentecost's book. The amount of times it appears depends on the
translation one uses. The New King James notes ten memorable verses: Deut.
32:35; Isa. 41:22; Isa. 45:11; Jn. 16:13; Rom. 8:38; 1 Co. 3:22; Col. 2:17; Heb. 9:11;
Heb. 10:1 and Heb. 11:20.

One of them is an all-time favorite of mine:

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor
powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other
created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ
Jesus our Lord. (Rom 8:38-39)

Dr. Pentecost (affectionately known as Dr. P) went to be with the Lord on April 28
this year. He died four days after turning ninety nine years old. His memorial service
can still be viewed on the Dallas Theological Seminary website.

I highly recommend watching that video to get an idea of the caliber of the man.
Especially touching, inspiring, and revealing of Dr. P's commitment to Christ, is the
tribute paid to him by Dana Barber.

On the Dallas Theological Seminary website one can find several sermons by Dr.
Pentecost. One of my favorites is Maranatha. As the introduction states, Dr. P
speaks on how we should be living in light of Christ's imminent return.

He recalled how he was given a little apartment at DTS and that President Dr. Mark
Bailey promised to call in on him now and then. Dr. Bailey told him, "I'm coming, I
promise you."

That statement apparently "revolutionized" Dr. P's life. From then on he took to a
stringent routine of keeping his apartment in immaculate condition in anticipation of
the any-moment visit from the DTS president.

The point of Dr. P's sermon is obviously aimed at reflecting how we, as Christians,
should be living our lives in expectation of the any-moment coming of Jesus Christ
for His church.

Sadly, the imminent coming of Christ has sustained a number of attacks by non-
pretribulationists. These attacks often consist of questioning the pretribulationists'
motives. They're often accused of being "escapists" or "easy believers."

Rightly or wrongly, I've adopted some tongue-in-cheek sarcasm to these charges.

If you want to be a super-saint who rejoices in tribulation, go picket the Iranian jail
where they torture Pastor Saeed. Go preach the gospel to the Islamists. After all,
there's a possibility that you'll die before The Tribulation and lose your opportunity
for that Crown of Martyrdom. Moreover, you won't be concerned that Jesus may
come suddenly and catch you napping because He can't come today - right? (Mat
24:36-39, 42, 44, 50, 25:13).

I've read some ingenious arguments against imminence. In response to Gerald
Stanton's Kept from the Hour people like Robert Gundry and Doug Eigsti have
expended a lot of energy arguing that certain events need to occur before Jesus
returns. Their catch phrase is "expectancy rather than imminence."

Space won't permit turning this column into a detailed defense of imminence, yet
some things may be noted. Jesus couldn't have returned five minutes after He
ascended to heaven - Pentecost still had to happen. But that doesn't invalidate an
imminent rapture.

The Lord gave Israel various signs of His return and He also stipulated that it had to
ask Him to come back (Matt 23:39). We're told that there is a surprise coming
involving a time of peace (1 Thess 5:2-6) yet also one which follows calamity (Matt
24: 21; Rev 19:11). All this is contrary to a plain understanding of Mark 13:34-37.
Neither Eigsti nor Gundry explore these apparent contradictions in their zeal to
defend "expectancy" at the expense of imminence.

If I plan a trip to Australia and tell my wife to expect my return at any moment, she
would understand that I can't return until at least after I arrive at my destination. But
my return will be more imminent the longer I tarry.

When I tell her the lights in our house will blink on and off repetitively some time
before I come, or if I make my return contingent on her asking me to, then Mark 13:
34-37 cannot apply. If I tell her she won't know what time, because it is a time she
won't expect, then it does. All the examples cannot be true of the same coming.

As an interesting aside, Eigsti employs several anti-imminence arguments used by
prewrath proponents. It's an irony to me that this view teaches several comings of
Jesus while asserting that all rapture and Second Coming texts point to a single
Advent of Christ. How can that be?

Following Dr. P's Maranatha sermon, I stumbled across Alistair Begg's
understanding of Mark 13. He treats it as A Wake-Up Call. Pastor Begg is no
pretribulationist, and he has some sober advice for us all. His eschatology is not an
overtly developed one and pretribbers will amicably disagree in areas. However, it is
crucial to note what he says:

"Jesus tells His disciples that no one knows when His return will be - even He does
not know! What then is the purpose of prophecy in the Bible? Knowing that our Lord
will certainly return, but not knowing when, motivates us to obey His command,
"Stay awake."' (Emphasis mine)

People like Alfred Edersheim and Robert Murray M'Cheyne saw imminence in
Scripture and recognized its importance. Edersheim wrote that it was vital for the
church's endurance and faith to have that "peculiar attitude" that the Lord could
come at any moment. Likewise M'Cheyne appealed to Mark 13 as he admonished
his congregation to watch - telling them that the Lord is coming back, and could do
so suddenly.

I don't have any special biblical insights to offer. Even so, I suspect that during the
19th century God awakened modern Jeremiahs who began taking prophecy
seriously. They read Scripture and saw a future modern Israel on the biblical
horizon. They did not conspire to bring it to pass and neither did they coerce the
world to hate Israel. Yet it happened.

Similarly, they've been warning of Christ's imminent return and the subsequent
judgments on this world.

Dr. Pentecost has gone to be with the Lord, and so have many other Watchmen
before him. Could it be that God is slowly withdrawing His special verbal warning?
The Lord might return sooner than many scoffers imagine. Hence, the continual
warning to watch.

What are we all doing about it? This is an area where I am found wanting.
