If your response to the idea of doing
something for nothing [and lets not
get carried away, volunteering can be
pretty thankless, people just assume
these things happen but one lives in
the hope that your self-satisfaction will
be recognised at your eulogy!]
If your response is that you are too
busy then you are probably going to
make the best of Volunteers , as a
wise man once said if you want
something done, ask a busy person!
So the time is NOW its NOT some-
one else's responsibility if you live,
work, holiday, or visit the Havens then
YOU can be a warmly welcomed
Volunteer get that self-righteous
smug grin that we all strive for its the
most wonderful feeling !
DISCUSS ! - email your point of
view to havensdiary@yahoo.co.uk
DIARY DISCUSSION!
Has the Havens exhausted its
Volunteer Reserves?
This Community Diary has been
published every month for decades.
Its articles are volunteered and sent in
and its put together into a magazine
style format by volunteers and
distributed by the HCC clerk- thats
the way its always been!
One only has to take a look at the
who to contact page to discover a
plethora of people who are helping
out in the communities of the
Havens, most of them are volunteers.
There are also many groups ; Friends
of the School, Mad Mothers, After-
school club, each raise thousands
of pounds each year to enhance the
trips and equipment of the
playgroups, clubs & school.
Annual events such as the Fireworks,
Carnival, Easter egg hunt, Easter
Bingo, Xmas Bingo, Xmas lights,
Havens Festival week, Stack Rock
Swimall organised by volunteers
..Litter pickers, book groups....many of
whom are the same people, who have
probably been doing it for years!
Now the Havens, especially parents
of school children have a real
opportunity to begin their Volunteering
Career! The Boardwalk that so many
of us used to safely walk our children
to school, or simply meander along on
a pleasant day is actually closed,
fenced off, and is about to be [in part]
lost forever [see pg31] all the hard
work of those past volunteers who
made it happen will be nothing but a
memory
Thank you Mrs B. You will
be missed! Mrs Becky Burch has
been a valued volunteer member of the
Havens Community Diary Team for a long
time now, but she has decided to give
someone else a chance! Becky is a busy
mum who works tirelessly raising funds for
one cause or another so, on this occasion
, well have to regretfully accept her
resignation BUT she has promised to
keep sending in recipes [ hopefully some of
her delicious cakes from her new caf!] and
the occasional article. Thanks Beck x
If you fancy helping out the Diary team
please email in and well provide you
with all the details
Read our special page on Volunteering
Opportunities page 7 and email the
Havens Diary or The HCC clerk if you
think its time that you helped out! Like

Hi, we are looking for someone special
to come and take us out from time to

as we like going to the beach. If you
want to know more, please give my

come round and see us. Tally, Sasha

This winter has brought some fierce
weather to our coasts and it has taken
many hours of dedicated work by
volunteers to clear the resulting litter.
In recognition of this Keep Wales Tidy
and Oriel y Parc are pleased to invite
beach cleaning groups and interested
parties for an evening of talks and
socialising to celebrate Clean Coasts
Week 2014.
The evening is free of charge and will be
held at Oriel y Parc the Pembrokeshire
Coast National Park Visitors Centre in
St Davids on Saturday May 17th
starting at 6.30pm.
Guest speaker, David Jones, of the
Plastic Oceans Foundation will share
his insights into the larger scale problem
of plastic pollution in the oceans and
some of the images he has collected
from around the world while filming and
photographing in the marine
environment. David is an inspirational
and motivational speaker with a clear
picture of the current state of our
oceans and what we can do to change
it. As a commercial and media diving
supervisor and underwater
photographer he has worked for the
BBC Natural History Unit, CBBC, and
other production companies making
underwater documentaries. He is also a
Dive Journalist with regular columns in
Sport Diver.
There will be opportunity to meet some
of your fellow beach cleaners, share
successes and resolve any issues you
CLEAN COASTS WEEK 2014 - ORIEL Y PARC
may face with the help of the Keep
Wales Tidy team who will also introduce
the new Pembrokeshire Coast Care
social media page and take your
suggestions and feedback.
Refreshments will be provided on the
night. Please R.S.V.P. to
clareb@pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk
or by calling 01437 720392. Spaces
are limited so please let us know as
soon as you can if you will be joining
us.
During Clean Coasts Week Oriel y Parc
are running a series of workshops
creating sculptures from the plastics
collected on our beaches. If you would
like to join in with this and build your
own sculpture in the grounds, or
contribute to a collaborative piece, you
would be most welcome. Please

yellow on his wings and tail (particularly noticeable on a sunny day). The female is
a dull green-brown. The Greenfinch is similar to a House Sparrow in terms of size.
Traditionally a bird of farmland or woodland, this species has only been a regular
visitor of gardens since the early 1900s but is now one of our most familiar garden
birds. The beak is strong and robust, perfect for its diet of seeds. The Greenfinch
prefers to eat seeds found within fleshy fruits like rosehips, but also eats the large
seeds of trees such as Elm and Hawthorn. As seeds become depleted in one area
the birds must travel to find new food sources and some migrate from Norway to
Britain late each autumn. Where there is sufficient food nearby, several pairs of
Greenfinches may be found nesting in a small area. Birds are even more social in
the autumn and winter, searching for food together in flocks. The chicks are fed
regurgitated seeds and insects but the adults eat only seeds. Greenfinches are
susceptible to the parasitic disease Trichomonosis, although it is not clear as to why
they seem to be more susceptible than species of similar habits. In some areas,
there was around a 20% decline of the breeding population between 2005 and
2006. Affected birds appear lethargic, fluffed up and sometimes drool at the mouth
(though these may also be general signs of ill-health). You can help to reduce the
risk of disease transmission by keeping feeders and water dishes clean.
Did you know?
Over the course of two months, bird ringing has shown that
over 1,000 Greenfinches used a single garden; despite no
more than 12 birds ever being seen together at one time!
Look out for the Greenfinchs forward threat display as they
dominate the bird table or feeder
The Welsh name is Llinos Werdd
How to attract them to your garden: Greenfinches
particularly enjoy sunflower hearts but will also feed on peanuts (always use a
metal mesh feeder) and black sunflower seeds.
Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern).
Garden BirdWatch data show that since the outbreak of Trichomonosis, numbers
of Greenfinches in gardens remain lower than pre-disease. When I began the
survey in 2004 I regularly had 40 or more individuals in my garden but in 2013 I only
ever saw one or two at a time. Disease will have played a large part but perhaps it
is also due to the increasing variety of bird species competing for food in my small
garden.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - BROAD
HAVEN BOARDWALK
The Community Council, with the
support of Pembrokeshire County
Council, have repaired and maintained
the Broad Haven Boardwalk throughout
the last ten years. However, we are
now in a position where the yearly costs
outweigh the available local Council
funds and alternative funding is
required.
In light of this we made a number of
efforts to find local residents interested
in forming an Environmental
Group/Association with a view to
applying for one of the Community
Grant Funding Schemes available.
Unfortunately, there has been no local
support for this project and we now
need to take steps to safeguard both
local people and visitors to the area.
Please note, therefore, the following
action will be taken over the next four
weeks.
1. Pembrokeshire County Council will
put together a plan to drain and tarmac
the path from the Swanswell footpath to
the Viewing Area.
This work will be added to their 2014/15
Maintenance Programme.
2. The Community Council will arrange
for any necessary repairs to be done to
the Viewing Area.
3. Pembrokeshire County Council will
be contacted for advice on the best
method to remove the remainder of the
walk.
4. The owners of the land will be
advised that we have been unable to
raise funding and in accordance with the
conditions of the lease we will remove
the structure to ensure no liability risk to
them.

MATTERS ARISING
Notice of Casual Vacancy A letter has
been sent to Electoral Services and
notices regarding the Councillor
vacancy have been posted in Broad
Haven and Little Haven Notice Boards,
the Village Hall, the Community Diary,
the website and restaurants in the area.
Broad Haven Boardwalk The clerk
advised the Council that over the last
five months only one person had made
contact with a view to joining an
Environmental Group/Association. It
was suggested that there should be one
last effort to generate support by
posting a request for volunteers in the
school's newsletter at the end of the
week.
Bowen Memorial Hall Unfortunately
the Clerk has been unable to obtain the
Hall End of Year Accounts, therefore, a
decision on a contribution will be put on
hold for now.
Budget The April 2014/15 Budget was
agreed and signed by Cllr Mary
Whitewright [Chair].
AGENDA ITEMS
Retired and Senior Volunteer
Programme Rachel Evans, of CSV-
RSVP Wales, the UK volunteering and
learning charity thanked the Councillors
for inviting her to the meeting and gave
a short background talk on the activities
and projects supported by CSV both
nationally and internationally. Their aim
is to change lives by strengthening
communities. One of the most popular
projects is the facilitating of community
handicraft groups where people can
learn new skills and make new friends.
The RSVP, Welcome Friends Project - A
Call for Volunteers. aims to reduce
social isolation amongst the over 50s.
By becoming a Welcome Friends
Volunteer you can help support a
socially isolated person and make them
feel that life is still packed with potential
and possibilities. Volunteer roles can
include one to one befriending,
introducing people to local groups,
organisations, clubs and/or societies
and helping people revive old
friendships or make new ones.
Details of how to contact Rachel in
order to get help to setup a group,
volunteer or let her know of someone
that is socially isolated will be published
in the Community Diary and put on the
web.

THE LITTLE HAVEN & BROAD HAVEN REGATTA COMMITTEE
The two great local summer holiday
events are the Carnival based in
Broad Haven and the Regatta based
in Little Haven.
This years Regatta is planned for
Sunday 10
th
August and will follow
the same programme as in other
years. It is in many sections with
young childrens games on the beach,
childrens swimming and diving,
sailing races, kayak races and last,
but not least Tudors Mackerel Race.
A day for all the family, but especially
for dinghy sailors.
Why 10
th
August? Well we are at the
mercy of the tides for much of the
programme and the date of the
Regatta is chosen from the best
Sunday (from the tide point of view)
from the end of July to the first two
weekends in August. In addition we
are members of the Pembrokeshire
Yachting Federation and the dates for
regattas all round the coast are
scheduled with minimum clashes so
those prepared to travel can
participate.
Last year the very lively and wet
weather created some of the most
challenging conditions and exciting
racing I have seen for many years.
Indeed, sadly the poor conditions
meant the childrens games were
cancelled I am sure we can expect
better weather this year!
Our AGM is Friday 30
th
May and we
would like to see new faces there to
vote on the election of officers and
with a view to become members of
the committee. There are usually just
committee three meetings a year,
two before the regatta and one after
so it is not demanding on committee
meeting time! However it is nice to
get help setting up and taking down
all the materials necessary to stage
the regatta on the day.If you would
like more information then please
dont hesitate to contact me. Patrick
Hellings, Hon. Secretary, Regatta
Committee 01437 781 319
Well if you have read this far then
maybe you can help? The Regatta
Committee has shrunk with some peo-
ple retiring after many years of great
contribution to the planning and stag-
ing of this annual event.

EASTER EVENT SUCCESS!
Two Easter events were organised
by the Carnival Gang over the
Easter Holidays :
The Family Bingo event hosted by
Mostyn, Kaye, Tom & team at The
Oceans was a very successful
evening on Wednesday 16th. Every
seat & table in the bar & cafe was
chock-full ! It was lovely to see the
usual loyal support of local Bingo
whizzes joined by holidaymakers of
all ages. Chocolate Egg prizes of all
sizes were won during the 9 Bingo
games and buttered Hotcross buns
were enjoyed at half time !
On Sunday the buzz moved across
to Anchor House for the Childrens
Easter Egg Hunt. Despite a rain
shower at exactly 3pm, more than
50 children aged from 0 to 11 years,
had great fun collecting 600 eggs in
less than 10 minutes! Thanks to Ian
& Helen of Anchor House B&B for
providing their lawns allowing a safe
place for the fun to take place.
These two events raised 162 in
funds for community amenities.
Thank you to all those that took part
and those that arranged the fun!

DOG-POOP-BAG-BUSH BLOOMS AGAIN IN BROAD HAVEN!
Once again walkers, visitors &
holidaymakers to Broad Haven will
have been surprised to see this bush
blossoming this weekend its
coloured blooms, usually a drab red
or black could be seen hanging from
at least three trees along the
Haroldstone Woodland walk this
Easter Sunday!
Traditionally this unpopular bush
blossoms during the season April to
September. Those natives that are
unfortunate enough to come across it
should look out for fruits that have
actually fallen from the bush and warn
children not to touch the foul smelling
pile, as it can harbor dangerous disease!
Those of us that have had the misfortune
to step on a fruit, are exposed to the
unpleasant stench that is released and
the abominable task of clearing the muck
out from the tread of shoes!
The most hazardous time of day appears
to be during the early hours of the
morning and again at dusk. This is when
most of the fruits are dropped with
perilous frequency, exposing
unsuspecting walkers!
The seeds of this invasive bush are
thought to have got into the food chain
through tinned dogfood and kibble and is
thought to be propagated by various
dogs that have not had their owners
properly trained in how to deal with the
effects. Those owners whose pet dogs
experience the side effects of dog food &
kibble poisoning should act quickly at
the first sign, which is usually the poopus
drops. These can vary in size and colour
and should be bagged immediately and
disposed of carefully
in a bin or taken
home to be
disposed of
safely.
This invasive
species is now
widely
recognized as a
significant threat
to the economy
of our local
tourism
businesses and
harmful to children. Reports or sightings
of this bush, its seeds or unqualified,
inexperienced dog owners should be
reported to the authorities on :

Personally I blame the parents (and
grandparents) when it comes to
gardening. If they had not drummed
into me the importance of straight
rows and neat edges maybe I would
not be quite as obsessive (my wifes
words not mine of course) about the
look of our allotment today.
I often ruminate on the words of my
forebears whilst tending the plot and
wonder how they would cope with
gardening practices today. Take
potatoes as an example. Always
plant your potatoes on Good Friday
has intrigued me since childhood
could they really have known what the
weather was to be when the date is
such a moveable feast. Just as Good
Friday is central to our Christian faith
so it seems it was to gardening. Or
was it just because it was the first
holiday of the year and the first
opportunity to get in the garden? (but
not on the Sabbath). Having chitted
them up (why under my bed?) plant
them with a handful of peat (a no, no
today!) or with pieces of glass if you
want chips!! (Thanks granddad).
Sorry folks but I planted mine un-
chitted and peat free on April 4
th
this
year.
Then what about Runner Beans?
You should always plant them on 12
th

May. Was the Warwickshire weather
so predictable? at least I dont that
carry that guilt with me today as the
Broadhaven site is far too exposed to
even try.
When I think of how fastidious we are
now about green credentials, I cannot
remember my father ever worrying
THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENS
about a plentiful supply of well rotted
horse manure or good quality compost
when a liberal scattering of National
Growmore was easier and quicker to
apply. A throw back to the Dig for
Victory campaign that began in 1942 -
today I dig for pleasure and exercise.
However, I am also in awe at both my
Fathers and Grandfathers abilities to
spend a full day heavy digging without
complaining (and Voltoral hadnt even
been invented), whereas I am stiff
from just a few hours with a rotovator.
Times have certainly changed but the
truth remains - we are still only
stewards of that part of Creation
available to us (albeit on lease from
the Council) and I regard it a privilege,
whatever practices we adopt.
Why not join us (whatever your
style) as a few plots are still
available? (Patrick - 01437 781319)

They were much sought after for the soft black down on their backs and the white
down on their fronts. Their common name was the Great Auk (pinguinus impennis).
The last two were strangled by collectors on the Isle of Eldey, off Iceland 3rd of July
1844.
