Being a Hall of Fame Dad

In 1983, construction workers were remodeling the Baseball
Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. Moving a display cabinet,
they found something very unusual. They saw an old
photograph tucked behind the furniture – the picture of a
stocky, friendly-looking man in a baseball uniform, with the
words “Sinclair Oil” on the shirt. Stapled to the picture was
a note in a man’s handwriting: “You were never too tired to
play ball. On your days off, you helped build the Little League
feld. You always came to watch me play. You were a Hall of Fame Dad! I wish
I could share this moment with you.” It was a mystery how the picture got there
and who placed it there, but apparently an athlete who was being inducted did
it. He was proud of his dad and believed he deserved special recognition, so
he held his own little induction ceremony. In essence, he was saying, “Dad, you
deserve a place among the best – you are a Hall of Fame Father.”
I would like to think that the ball player told his dad what he did; it would be a
shame if he didn’t. He may have been deceased from the wording of the note.
Too many children and parents go through life without hearing acceptance for
who they are and affrmation for what they have done. Please honor your dad
on this special Father’s Day weekend. If he is no longer living, pause and thank
God for the good things which he taught you and the love which he showed.
I am sure that many sacrifces were made on your behalf. Everyone sins and
makes mistakes. However, “If there is anything worthy of praise, let your mind
dwell on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
If you are a dad, recommit yourself to be honorable as your family honors you
(Proverbs 26:1). Give your children plenty of reasons to “rise up and bless you,”
just as it speaks of the godly woman in Proverbs 31:28. The Heavenly Father
says to us as Solomon spoke to his child, “Be wise, my son, and make my heart
glad” (Proverbs 27:11).
I consider it a great blessing to be the father of Kristin, Evan, and Allyson. My
precious wife, Janet, was blessed by God to not only allow me to father these
children, but to teach them to respect and love me. She flled in the gaps so many
times as I was busy being a pastor and looking after other people’s families.
May the Lord continue to “build the house” (Psalm 127:1). “How blessed is the
man” who has these “gifts of the Lord” (Psalm 27:3, 5).

Faith Family Freedom
By Dr. David Jeremiah
In this study, Pastor and Author, Dr. David
Jeremiah, applies the truth of God’s Word to
each of these common fears: Fear of Failure,
Fear of Depression, Fear of Being Alone,
Fear of Serious Illness, Fear of Dying. The
biblical teachings that he introduces will help
you break free of paralyzing fear through
God’s power and presence.
By Dr. Tony Evans
Witness the majesty and glory of God’s names.
In biblical times, names communicated a
person’s essence...his/her history, nature, or
character. That’s why God revealed Himself
by dozens of different names in Scripture. No
single name could convey the fullness of His
character and works. Learn the meanings
of God’s names to know Him more fully and
experience Him more deeply.

Home Bible & Life Groups (BLGs)
Launching This Fall
Every weekend, we have over 30 adult Bible and Life
Groups meeting on our church campus in what we consider
to be one of the most important ministries at FBCN. BLGs
are where the Bible is taught in a small group format, but
also where life happens and people truly become part of the
family. We want to expand this great ministry beyond the
First Baptist campus, as well as offer a variety of meeting
times during the week. In the fall, we will be launching a
new dimension to our BLG ministry, which we are calling
Home Bible & Life Groups. Groups will meet in homes
around the Naples community, and will usually happen in
the evenings. If you are interested in this new BLG ministry,
please contact John David Edie at
