The Canadian Supreme court is the main committee that provides oversight to
major government decisions. Its responsibility is to provide the ultimate expression
and application of Canadian Law and bring all lower courts under the same
umbrella. The appointed justices are required to retire by 75.
The nine serving Supreme Court justices are;
Beverley McLachlin is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She was born on Sept.,
7, 1943 in Pitcher Creek, Alta. Her alma mater is the University of Alberta, and was
appointed to the Supreme Court by Brian Mulroney in March 1989. Jean Chretien
later appointed her the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in January 2000 and is
required to retire on Sept., 7, 2013.
Louis Lebel was born Nov., 30, 1939 in Quebec City, Que., and graduated from the
University of Laval and the University of Toronto. He was appointed to the Supreme
Court on Jan. 7, 2000 by Jean Chretien and is required to retire on Nov., 30, 2014.
Morris Fish was born on Nov., 16, 1938 in Montreal, Que. His alma mater is McGill
University and was appointed to the court on May 8 2003 by Jean Chretien and is
required to retire on Aug., 31 2013.
Rosalie Abella was born on July 1, 1946 in Stuggart, Germany but grew up in
Toronto, Ont. She was appointed in April 2004 by Paul Martin and is required to
retire on July 1 2021.
Marshall Rothstein was born on Dec., 25, 1940 in Winnipeg, Man. His alma mater is
the University of Manitoba and was appointed to the court by Stephen Harper on
March 1, 2006. Rothstein is required to retire on Dec., 25, 2015.
Thomas Cromwell was born on May 5, 1952 in Kingston, Ont. He attended Queens
University and the University of Oxford. In December 2008, Cromwell was
appointed to the Supreme Court by Stephen Harper and is to retire on May 5, 2027.
Michael Moldaver was born on Dec., 23, 1947 in Peterborough, Ont. Moldaver
attended the University of Toronto and was appointed to the court by Stephen
Harper in October 2011. Moldaver is set to retire on Dec., 23, 2022.
Andromache Karakatsanis was born on Oct., 3, 1955 in Toronto, Ont. She attended
Osgoode Hall Law School and was appointed to the Supreme Court in October 2011
by Stephen Harper. Karakatsanis is to retire on Oct., 3, 2030
Richard Wagner was born on April 2, 1957 in Montreal, Que. Wagner attended the
University of Ottawa and was appointed to the Supreme Court on Oct., 5, 2012 by
Stephen Harper. Wagner is set to retire on April 2, 2032.
