III.- READING AND GRAMMAR

READ AND DO THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES.

Anne Frank was a young Jewish German girl who gained international fame after her
death following the publication of her diary. She wrote about her life, thoughts and
experiences of hiding from the Nazis in World War II. Her account of her two years
spent in an attic in Amsterdam became an international best seller. She died aged 15
in a German concentration camp.
Anne Frank was born in 1929 in Germany. Her father was a German officer from World
War I. Anne was a very studious and diligent student who had a passion for books. She
moved to Amsterdam with her family after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933. She
attended a Montessori school and was a very energetic and outgoing girl.
In June 1942, Anne received a notebook for her thirteenth birthday. She decided to use
it as a diary and wrote about her dreams to become an actress. In July, she and her
family were ordered to go to a work camp. Instead, they hid in the attic of her fathers
workplace. They shared the small space with another family for two years.
In August 1944, German security police discovered the hideout and arrested its
occupants. Anne was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp. Anne died in March
1945 and was buried in a mass grave, the whereabouts of which is still unknown. Her
diary was found and given to her father. It is one of the most widely read books in the

IV.- READING COMPREHENSION (5 POINTS)

THE MEANING OF DREAMS

For centuries, people have asked: Why do we dream? What do our dreams mean?.

Today science doesnt have definite answers to these questions, but we do know some
things about dreams. First, we all dream, often four to five times a night, second, we
dont usually remember most of our dreams. And finally, when we dream, our brains
are very active.
Thousands of years ago, people began to study dreams. In many cultures people
believed dreams were messages from spirits or gods. Later, the ancient Greeks and
Romans had a new idea; Dreams come from a persons mind . Doctors studied dreams
to help sick or worried people.
In the past, some cultures used dreams to predict future. They thought dreams could
help a person choose a husband or wife, guess a babys birthday, or start a business,
In some places , this practice is still common.
Today , scientists think dreams are about our thoughts and feelings. Our minds send
us messages about our lives. Unfortunately, many messages are often strange or
confusing. People wake up and think: What did that dream mean?
So, how can you understand the messages in your dream? Think about the events in
the dream. What do they say about your life? For example, one common dream is
about flying . Sometimes this dream means you feel free or want freedom. Other times
it means you feel afraid. What do your dreams tell you about your life?
