NED University of Engineering and Technology
Karachi, Pakistan

Dr. Muzzaffar Mahmood
Pro Vice Chancellor-I
NED University of Engineering & Technology
It was some date in May 1980 that I came to NED University of Engineering & Technology to see the then Chairman
of the Mechanical Department, Dr. Jameel A. Khan. I was looking for a job where I would be able to use what I had
learnt after leaving NED College as a student. I had just landed after six year stay at Cranfield, England, where I had
completed my Master's and Doctorate in Applied Energy. What I remember of that day was clamor of the students
and the warmth shown by Dr. Syed Firasat Ali. Dr. Jameel managed to get me appointed as an ad hoc Assistant
Professor in about two months.
I joined in July 1980 and from then onwards, except for some hiccups during earlier years, it has been an excellent
experience till I formally retired on 1st January 2011 after having reached 60. Looking back thirty years, I am glad
to have taken teaching as profession. I have been able to pass on whatever little I had learnt to the future
generation. During my teaching career I came across some wonderful students, and it is indeed very pleasing to see
them reach peak of their professions. The rewards of being a teacher cannot be measured in worldly terms.
Nothing satisfies me more than meeting a familiar face at the airport telling me that he was my student, say in 1987,
and he still remembers me smoking like an engine during the class and, somewhat to my embarrassment, on some
occasions trying to write on the board with a burning cigarette instead of chalk.
During my teaching career I taught Heat Transfer for most of the time and I feel happy to meet former students who
have taken advance course(s) in this subject and followed careers in thermal sciences. Their claim that I was the
main instrument which made them make this choice gives me pleasure which cannot be described in words.
I was later given the task of helping to set up new departments at NED and was involved very deeply in setting up
Textile Engineering and later in setting up the Automotive and Biomedical departments. While I have been given
several other administrative tasks, what I will remember most are the years when I have stood before the
blackboard in the class. At times it seemed to be an oasis in a desert. I enjoyed entering the room with all those
eyes watching, some with a twinkle of mischief, some looking bored and tired, some dutiful, most of them benign
and then the change I could see during the course of an hour: attention and satisfaction; even happiness perhaps
knowing that the hour is over but what I would like to think is the feeling that the hour was well spent.
What NED stands for is something which can truly be understood only by those who have been in NED: education
being provided almost free of cost, admission being on merit, students coming from simple background; and with
desire of becoming good and effective professionals.
With best wishes for NED Alumni.

NEDIAN-NA Chairmans Message
Dear Fellow NEDians and Friends of Ned University,
Assalamo Alaikum
NEDIAN-NA is the national platform for NEDians in North America. It has taken us 2
years to organize and move closer towards the goals set up by the Alumni Outreach
Committee (AOC) preceding the 2010 Chicago convention. The role of the NEDIAN-NA
has been gradually evolving as we meet at our annual conventions from New Jersey last
year and on to our Washington, DC convention this year. The unity and our ability to
work together has been exemplary as exhibited by the democratic organization structure
with input from partnering networks consisting of Silicon Valley (San Francisco / San Jose area), Southern California
(greater Los Angeles), Houston, Chicago (includes Indiana, parts of Michigan, Iowa), Tri State (New York / New
Jersey),New England (Connecticut), Alberta (Vancouver / Calgary-Canada) and Washington DC.
We believe that it is now time for us NEDians in North America to establish an endowment fund. The fund is
designed to be a vehicle for undertaking projects that will support our Alma Mater and NEDUET students as well as
engineering projects within our local communities in North America. The NED Alumni Endowment Fund (NED ALEF)
launched today in DC is being managed by NEDIAN-NA. NED ALEF will be jointly sponsored and funded by the
network of the NED Alumni Associations across USA and Canada with support of friends and well wishers.
NEDIAN-NA has strengthened its ties as an umbrella organization with NEDUET, at the same time embracing the
direct contributions of its networks to NEDUET. NEDIAN-NA provided financial and moral support to NEDUET team
in competing at Shell Eco Marathon, 2012 in Malaysia where The N5 vehicle achieved 103 kilometers per liter,
highest in its category from Pakistan and took 4th position in its category.
Our ongoing/future goals are:
1. To become a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.), a program designed to facilitate the professional
development of PMI members, PMI credential holders, and other project management stakeholders.
2. Conduct technical seminars in collaboration with national professional organizations in USA.
3. Coordinate and arrange special classes / seminars by NED Alumni at the NEDUET campuses.
4. Compile a ready list of experts available in various fields of engineering to facilitate webinar classes for
multiple disciplines.
5. Provide a bridge to the business community and chamber of commerce activities here and in Pakistan.
6. Facilitate and or conduct feasibility studies on infrastructure projects in Pakistan in water resources,
transportation, energy, environmental assessment and other subjects of interest.
We love to promote our outstanding fellow alums for their achievements. A sample of just a few success stories that
have been shared by NEDIAN-NA with its members, fellow alums and friends are:
Ashraf Habibullah, CEO of Computers and Structures, Inc. received the Structural Engineers Association of Northern
California (SEAONC) H. J. Brunnier Lifetime Achievement Award for changing the practice of structural engineering
for the better with his development of efficient and usable structural analysis programs, in addition to the American
Concrete Institute (ACI) Charles S. Whitney Medal for development of world-class computer applications.
Dr. Jami J. Shah, Professor, Arizona State University received American Society of
Mechanical Engineers (ASME) CIE Lifetime Achievement Award In recognition of his
outstanding contribution to furthering the discipline of computers and information
engineering.
Khawaja Nizamuddin took charge as president of Structural Engineering Association of
Illinois (SEAOI) which represents over 4000 practicing Structural Engineers; Nizam holds the
honor of being the first South Asian to be elected to this post at SEAOI.

DARE TO DREAM
NED 2012 DC
8th International Alumni Convention

Athar Javaid
Chairman, NEDA - DC Board of Directors
Dear Fellow NEDians, NED Supporters and Honored Guests:
Every NED convention is a glowing endorsement to the philosophy of blending business and philanthropy for
common good and service to the society we are part of. NED conventions are reminiscent of what Nadirshaw Edulji
Dinshaw did nearly a century ago.
NEDA-DC as host of this Convention is thankful to all those NED Alumni who have in a way rekindled the spirit of
Nadirshaw Edulji Dinshaw by their generous financial contributions to make this convention a possibility. Next, my
heartfelt thanks are due to a wonderful and diligent NED 2012
Convention Steering Committee that worked hard for almost a year to
ensure that this convention, like many others in the past, will be a
memorable one.
Alumni associations are a force for service and support to the alma
mater. However, alumni associations of overseas educational
institutions functioning in various parts of the world have to be aware of
their obligations to their adopted homelands and be inclusive in the
service to the community and society they are part of.
Since its inception in January 2011, thanks to a dedicated team, NEDA-
DC has achieved:
Registration of the organization in Washington, DC
Alumni interaction and networking through various events such as Annual Dinner, Technology Lectures, Picnics
and Eid get togethers
Initiating formation of NED Alumni Endowment Fund (NED ALEF)
Hosting the NED 2012 DC, Eighth International Alumni Convention with the theme Dare to Dream
As a new kid on the NED Alumni Associations block, NEDA-DC has its share of fresh thinking and new ideas to
running Alumni Associations: namely, responsibilities to adopted homeland, service and support to the community
we are part of, and our strong belief in NED for a Better World.
As our token of concern and deep commitment for prevailing conditions in Pakistan, NEDA-DC is facilitating a
dialogue on Project INDUS: a proposal to mobilize the intellectual capital of Pakistan both overseas and in Pakistan
cultivating leadership evolution to help attain sustainable political strength and stability. Once we are on the road
to developing a strong passionate and selfless political leadership, the rest takes care of itself.
As a service to the alma mater, NEDA-DC has led the idea of NED ALEF. A North American NED Alumni Associations
Endowment Fund will provide service and support as well as help to NED students. Under the banner of NEDIAN-NA
and with the help of each and every one of you, we will make a difference for the better.
We firmly believe that NEDs continued strength will come from the strength of its homeland, Pakistan. We
therefore believe that collectively, the NED alumni associations should shoulder their part of responsibilities
towards a stronger Pakistan. Our initiatives to serve the Alma Mater and the Motherland are our contributions in
living NEDA-DCs slogan NEDians for a Better World: The journey has just begun..
May the plumb rule prompt us
that neither passion nor prejudice
should make us deviate from the
strict path of virtue; the level
whisper to us that we should
neither look down upon some nor
cringe before others; and
hammers remind us that skill
without exertion is of no avail.

The Chairs Chime In:
We Dare to Dream

Its a clich, but true. It seems like yesterday that we met to plan for this day. Now it is here! The journey of
planning and executing the 8th International Alumni Convention has had its ups and down, to be sure. But the ups
outweighed the downs by far.
NED alumni conventions are now an annual tradition over 8 years old which NEDains all over anticipate and look
forward to. Teamwork is needed to pull off such events successfully. We hope that you will find our teamwork
worthwhile. We are blessed to have a dedicated team of volunteers who helped to bring this all together. Each and
every member of the Steering Committee worked tirelessly to put the event together, to make it happen. We are
thankful to all of them. We would like to especially acknowledge some who have gone above and beyond their call
for duty and deserve our special gratitude: Kamal Mehdi, Dr. Asma Ali, and Tanweer Mallick.
This year, in addition to the goal of bringing the NEDians together, we have organized the convention around a
theme: Dare to Dream.
We invite you to join us in a journey to dream big dreams together. We all have had dreams of using our God-given
talents for the betterment of the Society; to use our knowledge and experience to help the fellow human beings.
To various degrees, many of us are fulfilling these dreams. However, there still many more who are now settled in
their professions, have raised their families, and have more resources to devote to the pursuits of helping others.
We hope that this convention will be the start of NEDians coming together to shape our dreams. What can we do
help NED and its students? What can we do to help Pakistan? What can we do to help our new homeland in North
America? What can we do to help the world at large?
Why do we need to dream? We need to dream so that we can create our own reality. We must create the reality
so that we are faithful to our dreams!

NED, O NED!

Glory of NED
Tanweer Mallick, CE 1979
NED was established in 1921 as the Prince of Wales
Engineering College by the citizens of Karachi to
commemorate Prince of Wales visit to the city. It was
affiliated with the University of Bombay and offered
Bachelor of Engineering in two disciplines: Civil and
Electrical-Mechanical. Upon the partition of India in
1947, it was affiliated with the University of Sindh and
four years later, upon the establishment of the
University of Karachi, NED saw its third affiliation.
During the early years of the Ayub Khan regime, when
the wheels were set in motion to create Engineering
Universities it would have been logical for NED, being
the oldest engineering institution in the country, to get
the nod. NED was, however, passed over, and in 1961
the Engineering Universities were created in Lahore and
Dhaka. What followed was years of neglect of NED.
Not only was it deprived of its rightful status, it was also
neglected when monies were being allocated. But NED
survived. Not only did it survive, it thrived. It kept on
taking in young boys (and later girls as well) and making
skilled and capable men and women out of them.
And all these years, NEDians struggle to obtain their
rights continued. In the mid to late sixties, with the
assistance of the World Bank, a plan was initiated for
the construction of a new campus adjacent to that of
the University of Karachi. This plan survived
bureaucratic negligence and incompetence until
construction was finally undertaken in 1973. It took
two years, but eventually the move was realized. On
September 20, 1975, history was made as proud
NEDians boarded a handful of buses, cars and yes
motorcycles, flying the maroon flag with the hammer,
chisel and level of NED to undertake the journey from
the old to the new campus on University Road. NED
had survived to see its move into a brand new home.
The fight for survival was still on. With all its Glory, it
was still an Engineering College, still affiliated with its
new neighbor, the University of Karachi. The strife
continued. In 1976 the Government announced that
NED would be upgraded to the status of an additional
Campus of the University of Karachi, and instead of the
Principal, will now be headed by a Pro-Vice Chancellor
(PVC). This was good; but not good enough. NED had
to become a University: NEDians made it loud and
clear, in their meetings with the Government, in their
General Body Meetings, and in the headline of the next
issue of Maimar, the College newspaper: Let PVC come
with a Date! The message was heard. Mr. Abdur
Rahman Akhund, then Chairman of Pakistan Railway
Board, himself an Alumnus of NED, a career civil
servant, was appointed the PVC and he came with a
Date March 1, 1977.
But there was yet another caveat. As of that date, NED
Engineering College would be upgraded to the
University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi.
Conspicuously absent were the letters NED. The
struggle was not over. So, the NEDians started the
conversation with the Government. The conversations
did not get anywhere. So, as per the custom of the
time, the NEDians boarded a few buses and descended
on the Chief Ministers House. While the rest of them
waited outside, a delegation went in to deliberate with
Mr. Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, then the Chief Minister of
Sindh. After a good hour and a half, or so, the
delegation emerged chanting NED, NED. And the skies
of Karachi filled with roars of NED, NED. NEDians had
prevailed. And so, thirty-five years ago NED
Engineering College became NED University of
Engineering & Technology. It was indeed, the beginning
of another chapter in the Glory of NED.

NED, O NED!
NED ALUMNI ENDOWMENT FUND - NED ALEF
Alumni Associations recognize the need for a
perpetual source of income to support their mission
by building an endowment for sustained service and
support to their Alma Mater as well as objectives
associated with stated mission, focus, and purpose of
the organization. These are generally financial
endowments involving a transfer of money or
property donated to an institution. The endowment
is typically organized as a public charity, private
foundation, or trust.
We believe that it is time for us NEDians to come
together for a greater cause and to give back to NED
and our communities. To that end, we have
established an endowment fund. The fund is
designed to be a vehicle for undertaking projects that
will meet the needs of the Alma Mater and the NED
students as well supporting engineering projects
within our local communities. The NED Alumni
Endowment Fund (NED ALEF) will be under the
management of the NED International Alumni
Network (NEDIAN-NA) and will be jointly sponsored
and funded by the network of the NEDians and NED
Alumni Associations across USA and Canada, with
support of friends and well-wishers. However for the
fund to be effective, it is imperative to have the
partnership of the administration of NED UET. We
have had communications with the administration of
NED to be a partner in this venture. We have an
understanding; details are being worked out.
The endowments financial activity and its outcome
are designed to achieve specific goals. The
Endowments investment capital, its income and use
of the income depends on the objectives and
restrictions placed by donors in reference to funds
utilization. Objectives of an Alumni endowment may
consist of some or all of the following:
Alumni Professional Development /
Academic Enrichment Grants
Alumni Research Grants and Fellowships
Endowed professorships
Endowed scholarship/fellowship
NED - ALEF objectives, as envisioned currently are
listed below and may be modified as and when
needed by a Board of Trustees in view of NED ALEF
performance and/or changing needs of the Alma
Mater and NEDUET students. Additionally, NED ALEF
would also support worthy causes within the local
communities in North America.
Examples of fund allocation include:
A percentage of NED ALEF annual income /
funds allocated to enhancing NEDUET
Academic Excellence. An example would be
eliminating the Curriculum gaps in
comparison to a selected world class U.S.
institution (e.g., MIT). A formal agreement
with the U.S. institution can be made to

NED, O NED!
NED International Alumni Network of North America
NEDIAN-NA
NEDians for NED
Tanweer A. Mallick
CE 1973-79
Secretary, NEDIAN-NA
We know how much involved and how influential
alumni groups in North America are in the matters of
their respective Alma Maters. These groups not only
support their schools with donations and endowments
but are active in policy-making and image-building
activities of their Alma Maters. It has been the desire of
many of us to create an active relationship between
NEDians world-wide and work together to enhance the
status and good name of NED. So while we had the
Alumni base eager to perform, we needed to clearly
define objectives, time-lines and strategies and
establish a means to channel the enthusiasm and fervor
to accomplish these goals.
There were several NED Alumni organizations
throughout North America, serving their members as
well as NED, independent of each other. Since we
believed that The whole is greater than the sum of its
parts, an umbrella organization would be more
effective in coordinating efforts towards realizing goals
that are common to all these groups.
The idea therefore, was to congregate, deliberate and
associate the various NED Alumni Associations across
North America to form an alliance of these
organizations. While the member organizations would
continue to serve their local memberships, the North
American NEDian alliance would work on matters of
common interest. This organization would then
communicate with other NED Alumni (Pakistan, Middle
East, etc.) to create a global NEDian alliance.
As NEDians we share a bond with thousands others
around the world. It is with this sense of camaraderie
that NED Engineers Association (NEDEA) of Greater
Chicago hosted NED 2010 Chicago: Alumni International
Convention with the theme Bringing NEDians
Together. The objective was not just to bring NEDians
together for the weekend, but to create a broad, strong
and long-lasting alliance.
Towards achieving this goal, and upon the
recommendation and authorization of the Steering
Committee of the NED 2010 Chicago (Convention), the
Alumni Relations Committee invited representatives
from all NED Alumni Associations in North America,
plus individuals from regions with large NEDian
population (but no formal Alumni Association) and
formed Alumni Outreach Committee (AOC). The AOC
was charged with laying the groundwork for the
formation of an International NEDian Alliance, starting
with North America.
Indeed, assembling the eight Alumni Associations of
North America in a teleconference on April 4, 2010 was
a wonderful milestone, worthy of recognition and a
congratulatory pause. At this historic teleconference
attended by twenty-one NEDians from the eight
existing regional NED Alumni Associations, it was
unanimously agreed that a need did exist for a
coalition of Alumni Associations in North America to
work on matters of interest common to all Associations,
as well as matters pertaining to NED; and that the AOC
should work towards achieving that goal with utmost
diligence. In subsequent months the delegates
worked hard and developed the Mission, Vision,
Objectives, Structure and Governance of this National
Alliance of NEDians, leading to the declaration on July
31st at the NED 2010 Chicago: Alumni International
Convention of establishment of NED International
Alumni Network of North America: NEDIAN-NA.
Currently, NEDIAN-NAs members are the Alumni
Associations of Greater Chicago, Houston, New
England, Silicon Valley (CA), Southern California, Tri-
state (NJ, NY & CT) and (from Canada) Alberta, (the
Founding Members), and its newest member
Washington, DC.

The Mission Statement of NEDIAN-NA reads: Establish
and maintain a community of Alumni of NED University
of Engineering & Technology, Karachi, Pakistan
connected regionally, throughout North America (NA)
and the world; by building and nurturing a viable and
durable educational, professional and social network of
Alumni, Students, Faculty, Patrons and Friends of NED
across business, industry, government and academia to
enhance educational cooperation between NED and
other educational institutions, benefit NEDians in
particular, and the engineering community in Pakistan
in general, to boost their image and professional
standing, to enhance the image of NED and to
strengthen NED and Pakistan.
The Vision is that NEDIAN-NA will be an umbrella
organization of NED Alumni in North America, linking
Alumni with NED, NED with the Alumni and Alumni with
each other with the ultimate goal of uniting and
empowering Alumni to serving and bettering our Alma-
Mater NED and Pakistan.
So we not only have the Alumni base mobilized as an
entity eager to perform, we have established what
needs to be done and we have a plan on how these
objectives are accomplished. The goals are tri-fold.
Here in North America promote, facilitate and
support the amalgamation of Alumni to enrich
the lives of fellow Alumni and to better the
communities we live in.

Secondly, NEDIAN-NA has been engaged in
communication with NED to come up with plans
of how the NEDians of North America can
contribute towards the betterment of NED.
And, finally, our hearts ache at the sad state of
affairs in the old country, the motherland. Are
we going to allow the status quo to continue, are
we going to let this bleeding to go on, or are we
going to do something about it?
A study of the History of Indo-Pakistan shows how a
group of Alumni shaped history and initiated the
movement that ultimately changed the picture of the
sub-continent, accomplishing the creation of Pakistan.
The students and alumni of the Aligarh Muslim
University did it for us. We have to pay it forward.
Taking inspiration from our grandfathers and great
grandfathers, it is incumbent upon us, the NEDians to
step up to the proverbial plate and go to bat for the
future generations of Pakistan.
Just as NEDians, we have accomplished more than we
thought we could, coming together as Alumni, we can
do a lot more than we realize we can for NED and for
Pakistan.
Build a Better NED, Build a Better Pakistan

nine decades ago, the student population
(undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate) in the
three campuses today is now approximately 8,000.
NED was initially founded as the Prince of Wales
Engineering College in 1921 as a commemoration of the
Princes visit to the city in that year. The school was
funded through the donations of the citizens of Karachi.
The College was renamed as the NED Engineering
College in 1924 in memory of Mr. Nadirshaw Edulji
Dinshaw, a well-known philanthropist, whose heirs
made substantial donations for the development of the
College.
After the creation of Pakistan, the Government of the
Province of Sindh took over the management of the
college and renamed it as the NED Government
Engineering College. Before it was granted the status of
a full university, NED was affiliated with the University
of Bombay (inception-1947), University of Sindh (1947-
51), and University of Karachi (1951-77).
The University presently offers undergraduate

You Made A Difference
Thank you, Sir.
Professor Mohammad Nauman: An institution within an institution
(1951-2009)
Dr. Safwan Shah, EE 1985
CEO and Founder of PayActiv, Inc.

The opposite of the religious fanatic is not the fanatical atheist but the gentle cynic who cares not
whether there is a god or not. Eric Hoffer, American Social Writer
Years ago at the Sakhi Hasan graveyard in Karachi, I
overheard a dervish repeatedly saying, Some people
buried here are not dead. I inquired, So, are they
living inside the graves? The dervish angrily
responded, If a person has brought good to ten people
and those ten people bring good to another ten people,
then the original person doesnt die, he continues to
live through others. We live through our actions and
deeds, only the flesh dies, the deeds multiply forever.
Do good and live forever; do bad and be reviled
forever.
Professor Nauman is an example of someone who
made such a huge social impact that he will continue to
live for generations. Not only was he a revered teacher
to thousands of his students, but he also propagated a
sense of social responsibility and deep compassion in
those he met and knew. There were always a few
compelling causes that he was applying his time, energy
and indefatigable spirit towards. Often these projects
involved using technology to help the poor and
disenfranchised; but more commonly, these projects
involved acts of support for social uplift in the city of
Karachi. I remember spending hours with Professor
Nauman in the mid 1980s when he was helping the
Edhi foundation deploy a communication infrastructure
to help the ambulances get to the needy.
We often talked about the foundations of political
thought, mass movements, progress and repression,
the future of Pakistan and the rising tide of intolerance
and fundamentalism. Professor Nauman had an
amazing ability to separate the superficial from the real.
A true progressive and an enlightened leftist, Professor
Nauman was an institution inside an institution. He
was the soul of NED University.
My last meeting with Nauman Sahib was in March
2009. After spending a few minutes in his extremely
modest home in faculty housing, where he also took
care of an ailing relative, we walked around the NED
campus. I vividly remember that day because for the
first time I noticed Nauman Sahib was a little impatient,
almost angry, as if time was running out and much work
had yet to be done. I carefully asked him if all was well,
he responded in his amazingly gentle way, Are you
hopeful that things will get better? Not knowing what
else to say, I responded, Sir, with you around to inspire
us, hope remains alive. He smiled. A few months
later, in November 2009, Nauman Sahib passed away.
It was like losing dearly very close relative.
Today, Professor Nauman lives and shines brightly in
the hearts, minds and actions of his many students and
colleagues. The Nauman Social Responsibility Initiative
(NSRI), operated by Koshish Foundation, continues to
sponsor NED students and in a small way keep the spirit
of Professor Nauman alive.

You Made A Difference
My Most Unforgettable Character
Qamar Kazmi, BE Civil, 1976
Of course, I am borrowing this title from the Readers
Digest, but also from my friend, Saif Ahmed Saeed (CE,
1976), especially as it relates to Mr. A.K.M. Rasheed,
who taught us Soil Mechanics in the third year and was
my groups external advisor for the final year project.
Saif has often said that Rasheed Sahib, or AKM, as he
was sometimes referred to by us, was the Most
Unforgettable Character he had met.
When I decided to write about Rasheed Sahib, I
reached out to friends and his former students for
comments that I could share with you. In addition to
Saif, a number of them shared their memories of this
great man: Abdul Moid and Rukhsana (Rahman)
Rahooja (both CE, 1976); and Qamar Hanafi (ME, 1982).
When he came to teach us, Rasheed Sahib was the
Chief Engineer at Haydari Boring and Piling Company. I
remember his first class when he walked in his usual
brisk manner, smiling, and took us by a storm! One of
the first things he told us was If you are concerned
about how you will do in this class, dont worry. I
assure you that the whole class will score at least first
class [more than 60 percent] marks. How much more?
That will depend on you.
Rasheed Sahib had a phenomenal memory. Not once
did he walk into the class with a set of notes or books!
He engaged his students by his animated lectures which
for some of us became the reason to pursue careers in
geotechnical engineering. Several years after NED, one
friend told me that he met Rasheed Sahib after a
number of years and Rasheed Sahib picked up their
conversation from the last time they had met!
There was not a single student in our class whom
Rasheed Sahib had not paid a visit outside of the class
room whether at their own home, a friends home, or
in their hostel rooms. When your teacher takes that
much interest in you, it is difficult not to become
interested in the subject he is teaching.
Some excerpts from those who shared their memories
of Rasheed Sahib follow:
AKM called my Chacha Abdul Karim and asked for his
permission to meet him in the capacity of my teacher.
Chacha was immediately swept off his feet by AKM who
had come to meet him at our family home From then
onwards, AKM and Chacha Abdul
Karim became buddies!! I
moved to England in 1976 after
completion of my BE to join my
parents there and was surprised to learn that AKM and
Chacha remained in touch. May Allah bless their souls
in heavenly abodes. AMEEN!
I will never forget the day when I was very cross with a
friend I was working with and was ready to tell him
what I thought of him, when Rasheed Sahib stopped me
and drove to meet me just to tell me that even though I
am right, I am old enough to learn to close the door
and not slam it when leaving after having a difference
of opinion with someone.
One thing which impressed me so much was his care,
not only about us but our family as well. I remember
the day when my father died and he came to know
about it. I did not ask for any financial help to foot my
father's hospital bill. When I joined the office after two
or three days, Rasheed Sahib went to Seth Ghaffar (the
then- MD of Haydari) and brought a check of Rs 5,000
and told me that this money is for the medical expenses
of my father while he was in hospital.
He was a teacher, a great friend, and a father to us. I
worked for him for a number of years. He used to guide
us and give us work according to the family situation we
were in. Not many bosses know this trick. I still get
tears whenever I think of Rasheed Sahib. We can never
repay for what he did for us.
During college days AKM had given me permission to
call him late in the night if I had a problem with my
studies. It was usual of me to call him at 12 midnight or
even as late as one in the morning. After he got
married, I was hesitant to call him late. He asked me
why I had stopped calling. When I explained, he
answered in his inimitable style: You are being
unnecessarily kind to me. You see I am an unorthodox
person...so you can call me just like before I got
married...
It may be a clich but it is so true for Rasheed Sahib:
Hazaaron saaal nargis apni bay-noori pay roti hai
Bari mushkil say hota hai chaman mai.n deedawar paida

You Made A Difference
An Inspiring Teacher Zafar Razzak
Anas Hashmi, BE (Civil) 1994

It is often said that if parents give their children a good
foundation, they will grow up to be happy, well-adjusted
adults. While this cannot be disputed, it can also be said
that a good foundation is built upon by the teachers we
were lucky enough to have in our lives who contributed in
molding us into what we are today. A teacher has great
opportunities to inspire a student; not only to achieve but
more importantly, to dream of the many.
Many of us can reflect on our educational experiences
and think of few teachers that truly made
a difference in our lives. It may have been
a teacher who supported us at a
challenging time, a teacher who inspired
us, or maybe a teacher who instilled a
hope of a possibility we had not
considered.
Zafar Razzak, was one of those teachers.
He left a lifelong impression on me with
his approach to life and teaching. He
made me realize that nothing is difficult
and it only depends how it is presented to you. He
brought his passion for teaching and his sincere
commitment to the class every day. He had great
expectations for every student in his class and
motivated each of us to meet those expectations. His
support, encouragement and smile were always there.
I started my classes in Civil Engineering Department at
NED University in hot summer days of July in 1989. Like
every academic year, I found some of the courses
interesting and easy while others appeared as if they
were not for me. One of those was the Statics portion
of Engineering Mechanics. From the very first class, I
believed that if I was able to get passing grades in that
class, I should consider myself more than lucky. The
only thing I understood in that first class was that the
book we are going to use for this was written by a
pioneer of modern Engineering Mechanics: Timoshinko.
The next few classes were not much different. Each
class left me uninspired; and disconnected me more
from the subject than before. I found that I was not the
only one; the whole class felt the same.
After about a month into the classes, the professor
stopped the lectures and we discovered that he would
not continue. Our new teacher for the subject would
be Zafar Razzak. His very first class made me feel that
there was something special about this person. The
concepts which were unimaginable to grasp started to
make sense. In a matter of days, the subject became
one of the favorites of the entire class. Everyone
started working hard with an ever-increasing interest.
Before the final viva exams, I was with him when a
group of my fellow students came to his office. One of
the clarifications they sought was: would
he ask us questions blowing us off or would
the viva have questions which could be
answered? He replied, I feel that these
exams are to see how much a student
knows and not to find out how much they
do not know. So I am not going to start
from the end but will start from the
beginning to go as far as you can take me.
He added that even a person who has
studied and taught this very course for
years can stumble with questions if
someone really wants to do that.
The most effective educators truly dedicate themselves
to the job. They celebrate student successes, show
compassion when they are struggling, tell stories from
their own lives, share their unique quirks, and aren't
afraid to be imperfectly human in front of their
students. These teachers are a special and a rare breed
who play a multitude of different roles in a given day
with fluidity and grace, while remaining true to
themselves that is how Zafar Razzak was. Though he
himself was a gold medalist of his class, he understood
the needs of all his students and reached to the level of
each individual to help them connect and be effective.
He was only in his mid 40s when he left this world on
November 18, 2007. Though he is no longer amongst
us, the hope and inspiration he created is alive in his
students wherever they are. The intellectual curiosity
and occasional merriment that characterized his classes
will be missed by students at NED University. He will
always live in the memories of the pupils hearts he has
touched in his short stay in this world.
May Allah bless him and give him place in Jannah.

You Made A Difference
Suhail Akbar, BE (Computer Engineering) 1993
men
.
tor: a wise and trusted counselor or teacher (American Heritage Dictionary)
The first day of classes at any university is hectic; mine
was no different at the NED University. It was a bright
sunny day back in 1988. Unaccustomed classroom,
strange faces, unfamiliar corridors and new teachers--
newness was the order of the day. Teachers would
enter the classroom, briefly introduce themselves,
deliver their lectures, and would leave. Third or fourth
teacher to enter the room was somewhat different.
Different because, first, the teacher was a woman: slim,
tall, young and graceful; second, she was very confident
and quickly had the whole class (including the
backbenchers) under full control; and, third, her lecture
was well-prepared and excellently delivered.
Yes, that teacher was Madam Neelofur Master.
Madam Neelofur Master taught us Chemistry and
taught it really well. Outside the class, Madam
educated us and did so
subtly, without the
students even realizing
it. Many students used
to visit her office. She
would patiently listen,
advise, and, if appropriate, would get involved to make
things easy for the student. I was a first-hand witness
to her amazing counseling skills. Madam Neelofur was
the true embodiment of the word mentor.
Since 1981, Madam Neelofur Master has been serving
my - and her- beloved NED University, and continues to
profoundly influence young minds. Currently, she is the
Acting Dean of Bio-Medical Engineering.
Without a doubt she is a change-maker in the society
we all care so deeply about.

NEDIANS FOR A BETTER WORLD

OBAT Helpers

Started and being managed by Anwar Akmal Khan, NEDian, BE Mech, 1982 and his wife Afshan Khan

OBAT Helpers is a non-profit, 501(C) 3 organization
committed to providing aid, support, education and
economic empowerment to the unfortunate, displaced
forgotten population residing in camps in Bangladesh.
Commonly known as stranded Pakistanis, they have
been suffering silently in the countless slums or
makeshift camps scattered across Bangladesh, for the
past 40 years. They are unclaimed by both the
governments of Bangladesh and Pakistan. Altogether,
there are about 300,000 people languishing in sixty-six
makeshift camps in extremely poor conditions. They are
a population living in abject poverty with no access to
basic amenities or sanitation facilities.
These people in the camps have no access to clean
water and live on less than a dollar a day; they live in
tiny tin and bamboo huts; their children dont go to
school so that they can help their parents make a living;
they suffer from infectious diseases and malnutrition;
and the living conditions are unsanitary and shameful.
These people need immediate help. OBAT has
established schools, health clinics, tutoring and
computer training centres and most importantly, a self-
empowerment program. The underlying goal here is to
improve the lives of these unfortunate people and to
replace the misery in their lives with happiness, hope
and self-worth.
OBATs mission is to work for the welfare, support and
rehabilitation of indigent, stateless and displaced
people. The primary focus is to alleviate the suffering of
thousands of stateless people stranded in refugee
camps. The goal is to provide them with better living
conditions, education and economic empowerment.

Currently, the target is to build and provide basic
amenities and decent living conditions for the camp
dwellers. Education and economic empowerment are
the areas of focus. The emphasis is on providing them
with tools to help themselves and their fellow beings in
the community, in the most effective manner. The
philosophy is that a judicious and strategic mix of aid,
education and vocational training and self-
empowerment initiatives will help achieve this goal.
OBAT Helpers is incorporated as a non-profit, non-
religious, and non-political organization in the state of
Indiana, to address this predicament. It is solely
dependent upon donations and volunteer support to
carry out its programs and activities.

THE SET SCHOOL
A school project started and operated by an NEDian Syed Niaz Hussain, BE Civil, 1983
The SET School, started in 1998, is run by the Saran
Educational Trust in Karachi, Pakistan. It aims to provide
quality education at the cost that is affordable by most
segments of the society, particularly the less-privileged.
The School has two
campuses, one for
elementary and
primary classes
and the other for
secondary classes.
The school boasts
two libraries, two
computes labs and
a science lab.
The SET school
currently has 360
students on the roll. The fee structure is 25 to 50
percent lower than other private schools. Additionally, a
subsidy of 30 percent is given to needy students. Sixty
percent of the students at SET School benefit from the
subsidized fee structure. Half of the schools expenses
are met from the tuition fee collected from the students
and the other half is met from the donations given by
several philanthropists. Throughout the school year,
students take part in co-curricular activities, including
excursions, inter-school competitions, and sports events.
The school is registered by the Board of Secondary
Education, Karachi. Since
registration, three batches
have graduated from the
school and passed their
matriculation examination
with good grades. The school
alumni have been able to

NEDIANS FOR A BETTER WORLD
THE ALI ACADEMY
A school project started by an NEDian, Arjumand Zaidi, BE Civil, 1989

Dr. Arjumand Zehra Zaidi and her team of dedicated
volunteers operate Ali Academy in a suburb of Karachi,
Pakistan. It is a pilot project focused on bringing social
reform as well as education to the kids who live in
make-shift shelters along the roads and have no access
to education. Without education, most of these kids
will spend their entire lives in poverty and will be forced
into odd jobs at an early age, never really living or
enjoying their childhood.
Ali Academy has dedicated its efforts to bring hope into
the lives of these kids and give them a chance for a
better future. Dr. Zaidi and her family have a dedicated
the upper floor of their house for the school. It is a
relatively small school with only one class room of
about 30 kids ranging from 4 to 10 years of age. Each
child at Ali Academy is provided with a school bag, pair
of clothes, art and school supplies. Kids at Ali Academy
study math, reading and writing, English, Urdu, and
Arts. The objective of Ali Academy is to educate these
kids enough so that they can hopefully join a
mainstream school.

Dr. Safwan Shah, (EE, 1985)

No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.
- Yoda, Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

To be admired by everyone that knows you and respected
by the ones that you have differences with is no small feat.
Very few people can claim an honor so powerful. It is my
privilege to know such a person Syed Mehdi Kamal our
friend, Kamal Bhai.
A few weeks ago, when asked to put together a few words
about Kamal Bhai, I agreed instantly. It should take me
only a few minutes, I thought. Well, it didnt quite turn
out that way. Every time I started writing, words escaped
me. This happened several times and then I gave up,
dreading that I wont be able to keep my promise, until I
went to Karachi and met some old friends and talked to
them about Kamal Bhai.
One conversation went like this:
Me: Yaar, Kamal Bhai yaad hein?
Friend (smiling): How can one forget him?
Me: What do you mean?
Friend: Yaar, acha aadmi tha. Kahan hai aaj kal?
Me: Amreeka mein.
Friend: Hmm. Hamari qismat hi kharab hai.
Not satisfied with this conversation, I decided to have this
conversation differently and with more specifics with
another friend:
Me: Yaar, Kamal Bhai yaad hein?
Friend: Unko kaun bhool sakta hai.
Me: Kyon, un mein kiya khaas baat thee?
Friend (thinking): Yaar, hamisha behtri karney ki
sochta tha.
Me: kiya matlab?
Friend: (Describes a personal story of how Kamal Bhai had
helped him.)
Still not getting anywhere, I decided to start calling other
friends and asked them about Kamal Bhai. After a dozen
calls, the net result Kamal Bhai has no glaring faults and
flaws, he is a good man, he went out of the way to help
me (a common theme). Seems impossible, but that is
what I heard from everyone I called. Just to make sure, I
also asked about other people and usually the responses
about them were dismissive when compared to Kamal
Bhai.
So, what is it that makes Kamal Bhai revered and
respected by almost everyone? Speaking for myself, it is
his complete sincerity and earnestness. His selfless
outlook and never judge anyone attitude. His
compassion for the weak is astounding and I often think
that if he hadnt become an engineer he could have
become a mystic or a social worker like Edhi or Ansar
Burney.
So many times I remember him talking about the less
privileged and figuring ways to help them through
scholarships and other support. As I think more, one other
aspect of his personality that stands out is that he never
looked for anything in return. So what does this make
him?
Whereas most of us are transactional: do this for me and I
will do that for you; give this to me and I will give you that;
Kamal Bhai just did. For me, Kamal Bhai is the most
transformative figure that I know. He makes you feel
better, do better, be better, do more, be more and he
has been doing it for the 30 years that I have known him.
May Kamal Bhai continue to share his amazing gift.

(Safwan Shah knows Kamal Bhai since 1980. Over the course of these 30 years, he has kept in touch with Kamal Bhai
as a friend and respected him as a mentor. Safwan privately calls Kamal Bhai a Jedi warrior and believes that Yoda is
actually Kamal Bhai. Much thanks to Rashid Ali Baig for his input.)

NEDA-DC

Pilgrimage of an Alumnus the Story of NEDA-DC
Arif Sattar
Director Communications NEDA-DC
When I retrospect to my academic associations - from
St Pauls High School to DJ Science College to NED
University and finally Oklahoma State University in US,
- I have to admit that NED takes the cake and the kitchen
from a life time impact on my personal, professional and
social relationships. I have been in the DC area since
2003 when I moved here from Toronto, Canada to take
an opportunity with a local financial giant. Guess who
played a pivotal role in that life changing event? Yes, it
was an NEDian, Shafqat Mallick, who is like a brother
and friend to me. Shafqat has had also worked for
couple of years on some R&D projects with me in
Pakistan in the early 90s.
As I was settling down, I noticed that the core
ingredients to incubate an NED Alumni forum in DC
metro already existed between VDOT, Fairfax County
in Virginia, a University of Karachi Alumni Association
(UKAA), there was a sizeable number of NEDians who
interacted on a regular basis using personal and social
platforms. I was introduced to this circle mainly by
Waqar Siddiqui, who is still a live wire in these circles.
Though Waqar and I talked many a times about forming
an NEDian group for social interactions and events, we
never pushed the envelope to formalize an organization.
It was not until Fall of 2010, while organizing a UKAA
event honoring Mirza Ghalib, that I was introduced to
Mr. Tanweer Mallick, the key force and architect behind
formation of NED Alumni in DC metro.
The first or the founding meeting was organized at BBQ
Delight, a local restaurant in Manassas Virginia, on
December 4, 2010. Twenty two NEDians, who are also
known as the founding members of NEDA-DC, showed
up and they were very passionate about forming an
alumni organization. At that event I was introduced to
quite a few NEDians, but my blessing was to get re-
introduced to Syed Mehdi Kamal (Civil 82). I cant speak
say enough good things about Kamal bhai; I will need
another article or, more appropriately, a book on to fully
discuss his services to NED and NEDians. Most of you
probably know or have heard of Syed Mehdi Kamal; If
not, please find the time to meet him at the Convention.
you will not regret it.
At the Manassas meeting a small task force was set up
to address mainly three aspects of the organization;
create by-laws, name the organization, and garner more
support. We were to re-group in a couple of months to
formalize a democratic organization. A group of sixty,
mainly 35 NEDians and their families, gathered under
the NEDA-DC name for the first time at Aabshaar
Restaurant, on Jan 29, 2011 - the birth date of NEDA-
DC. The by-laws, which were already published via an e-
group, were approved unanimously by the attendees,
followed by nominations and election of the candidates
for the nine positions forming the first Board of
Directors of NEDA-DC.
Before sharing NEDA-DC activities and the adventures
we have had in the first 21 months of our existence, let
me briefly introduce our mission, goals and
organizational framework. The mission of NEDA-DC is to
build a social platform for NED Alumni and their families
to network locally and to use this platform to promote
and support enhancement of education and image of
Alma Mater, specifically, and of Pakistan, in general.
Locally, NEDA-DCs goal is also to help provide
community integration at our homeland, USA. The
organization itself is structured around four organs
namely: General Assembly, Board of Directors,
Committees, and Charter Members. For details about
these organs and their functions please visit the by-laws
section of our website, www.neda-dc.org.
Development of the by-laws required a lot of thought
and energy as its the foundational document governing
the organization. In this respect, I simply cannot
appreciate in words the efforts of the team consisting of
Mr. Athar Javaid, our respected and fearless chairman;
Mr. Tanweer Mallick, our chief architect; Mr. Kamal
Mehdi, our beacon of humility and empathy; Mr. Arif
Mehmood, who was key to our first by-law amendment
pertaining to creation of a charter council organ; and of
course Mr. Anwar Ansari, our ever curious and
concerned supporter. Last but not the least, I would like

In the first year of our existence there were moments,
such as meeting and events, and then there were
moments of truth. For us the real moment of truth, after
the birth of NEDA DC, arrived on in October, 2011 at the
7th NED Alumni Convention in New Jersey, hosted by
NEDATS. It was my first Alumni event and I was really
floored by the camaraderie, the energy, and the
organization of the event. But the defining moment was
when NEDA-DC board sat across from the NEDIAN-NA
umbrella organization, discussing, and then agreeing, on
to hosting the 8th NED Alumni Convention in DC. I still
cant believe we agreed to this undertaking after just ten
months of existence it was a huge risk, surreal and
dreamlike but we took the challenge like most crazy,
dreamy NEDians would. Now here we are with this event
called Dare to Dream how appropriate! Lets keep
the dreams alive - be it the dream of NED Alumni
Endowment gathering steam and accumulating millions
of dollars for supporting NED and other social projects, or
creation of a strong Indus lobby in the US to help
instrument the right leadership and priorities in Pakistan!
Please keep the dreams alive.

NED Engineers Association
(NEDEA) of Greater Chicago

In August 1995, a handful of NEDians got together at
Pakistan Day Parade at Warren Park, Devon Ave,
Chicago. The group decided to arrange a picnic for the
NEDians residing in the Chicago Metropolitan area. The
picnic was arranged at the Forest Preserve in Kane
County. After the success of the picnic, NEDians
decided to arrange a meeting to establish an
Association. The first meeting was held in December
1996 at Shabbier Hassans basement in Carol Stream,
IL. Many of the attendees did not even know each other
they were from different disciplines and different
batches . However, that NED feeling was the common
connection shared by all of them. They decided to
formalize that connection and formed NED Engineers
Association of Greater Chicago (NEDEA), to include
Chicago and its suburbs, Southern Wisconsin and
Northwest Indiana. Thus was established the first NED
Alumni Association in North America NEDEA.
The objectives of NEDEA were to provide a social
platform for the NEDians and their families, to provide
opportunities of professional growth and development
of NEDians, and to keep NEDians informed of
employment opportunities in their respective fields.
NEDEA over the years has played a significant role in
bringing NEDians, living in the greater Chicago area,
closer.
The founding Members of NEDEA were: Mohammed
Shabbier Hassan, Fatal Hafez, Tanweer Mallick, Khawaja
Nizamuddin, Imia Rehman, Khairulbashar Siddiqui,
Farhan Siddiqui, Arshad Ansari, Rehan Wahab,
Mohammad Naeem Khan, Shamshad Wali and Syed
Naeemuddin.
The founding Chairman of the organization was
Mohammed Shabbir Hassan who served a two year
term, followed by Afzaal Hafeez, Tanweer Mallick,
Khawaja Nizamuddin and Imtiaz Rehman, Khairulbashar
Siddiqui, Anis Paya, and Haroon Sheikh (each of whom
served two year terms, except Khairulbashar and Anis).
The current NEDEA Chairman is Rashid Ahmed who has
been elected for a two year term.
NEDEA is a 501C-7 (Not-for Profit) Organization,
registered in the State of Illinois. Today the organization
has 150 members and is growing. It regularly arranges
family picnics in the summer and a dinner in the winter.
The annual dinner also serves as a General Body
meeting. Besides this, NEDEA has arranged educational
seminars, Iftar parties, cricket matches and has
participated in Pakistan day parade. NEDEA has, over
the years, also established and maintained contact with
the Alma Mater in various capacities, including
providing scholarships and technical and material
assistance from time to time. NEDEA has also
participated in raising funds for relief efforts for victims
of natural disasters in Pakistan.
NEDEA is a member of the Illinois Engineering Council.
It has also collaborated with the Arab American
Association of Engineers and Architects (AAAEA).
NEDEA and AAAEA have discussed the avenues for
cooperation between the two associations
NEDEA was the host of NED 2010 Chicago 6
th

International Alumni Convention and facilitator for the
establishment of NED International Alumni Network of
North America (NEDIAN-NA), of which it is a Charter
Member.
NEDEA is a staunch supporter and well-wisher of NED
Alumni Associations in all parts of NA. We extend our
heartiest congratulations to NEDA-DC on hosting NED

NED ALUMNI OF TRI-STATE
(NEDATS)
Anas Hashmi, General Secretary, NEDATS
NED Alumni Association of Tri-State (NEDATS)
represents NEDians living in the states of New York,
New Jersey and Connecticut.
NEDATS was formed in 2009 with the objective of
promoting interaction and closer contact amongst its
members for the benefit of NEDians and their Alma
Mater. As a non-profit corporation with formal by-
laws that control its actions, NEDATS is structured to
thrive for many years to come. In the few years of its
existence, our organization has not only been able to
create enthusiasm in alumni by promoting all that has
been good about NED University, but has also
nurtured continued friendships allowing us to
celebrate as a big family. It is because of this zest
that a large number of alumni and their families are
part of this convention and the majority of the
sponsorships for the convention came from NED
alumni associated with NEDATS.
While NEDATS organizes several events during the
calendar year, its annual Eid Milan Party gets the
most attendance. Eid Milan Party 2012 was held on
September 8, 2012 at Hotel Sheraton in Edison, NJ. It
was attended by 250 people and it was unfortunate
that several interested alumni and their families were
not able to join because of limited space.
One of the main goals of our organization is to create
and setup mechanisms so NEDians and their families
can benefit from each other, especially in times of
need. Last year, when a fellow alumnus suffered
from a heart condition which led to a long-term
illness, a fund was created by NEDATS under the
patronage of NEDIAN-NA, which successfully
provided support to the family and lessened their
financial burden.
With the help of generous donations from
prosperous alumni, NEDATS has successfully set up
four annual scholarships in the amount of $2,500
each awarded to deserving candidates determined by
comprehensive evaluation criteria. These
scholarships are provided to NED alumni pursuing a
masters degree or children of alumni pursuing a
Bachelors degree in the United States. Last year, with
the help of funds saved from the annual convention
hosted by NEDATS, we were able to award an extra
scholarship for an NEDian who was enrolled in
masters program.
NEDATS quarterly newsletter, Alumni Konnection
keeps members informed of the activities of the
organization. This newsletter is sent via electronic
mail to all registered members.
NEDATS enjoys unconditional support and
encouragement from NEDians living in the tri-state
area. We are very fortunate to be the home of many
successful NEDian entrepreneurs, who not only take a
keen interest in NEDATS activities but also play an
active role by sponsoring various programs
benefitting the NED community of the tri-state.
NEDATS take this opportunity to thank the entire
alumni community and sponsors for their continued
support and on their behalf we extend heartiest
felicitations to NEDA-DC on hosting this years
convention.

NED Alumni Association of the
Silicon Valley, CA: An Introduction
Imran Qureshi, Prseident

The silicon content of the Silicon Valley soil is no higher
than that of soil in other places. The Silicon Valley
derives its name from the fact that the area around the
south San Francisco Bay and especially the south
peninsula area with the Santa Cruz mountains to its
west and the Bay to its east has for decades provided
a lions share in pushing the world in the modern age of
fast communications and light speed computations; the
semiconductor industryusing silicon based wafers
being the backbone of this high-tech revolution. The
NED graduates have been at the forefront of this
technology revolution. With the oldest NED alumnus in
the San Francisco Bay Area being a 1958 graduate and
the young ones coming every year, the Valley is
estimated to have over two hundred NED graduates.
The NED Alumni Association of the Silicon Valley with a
mission to connect, serve, empower and support
NEDians and the NED University holds regular
meetings on the third Wednesday of every month.

NED ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS NEDA-TX
Mohammed Munawar
President

At last, a handful of NEDians assembled this year in Houston with an ambition to initiate the NED Alumni Association
of Houston, Texas (NEDA-TX). NEDA-TX was registered with the Secretary of State in Austin. It is intended to
include NEDians in the Greater Houston area and neighboring suburbs.
NEDA-Texas will be a non-profit, professional, educational, and social organization with service to NEDians as its
primary objective. The purpose of the association shall be to promote social activities and organize events through
the cooperation and the understanding among its members. NEDA-TX shall promote activities and programs to
foster interaction between NEDians and between NEDian families.
We plan to organize a variety of programs for the community to help with NEDians professional development and
work towards achieving the goals which are essential to such an organization.
The association is still in early stages of existence, but has recently acquired a space to designate its registered
office. We will be applying for non-profit organization status very soon.
Our strength is the large NEDian presence in Houston, which has migrated from Pakistan. Several hundred NED
graduates in the area are estimated to be working in major organizations, city and state agencies, and more
importantly, are owners of the businesses and construction. We are now working towards a membership around 20
to 40 to initiate the elections for formulating the first officially elected working body which could take
responsibilities to organize social activities.
I offer sincere prayers for the success of all NED Alumni Associations. I am confident that all the entities in the
different parts of USA will work together under NEDIAN-NA.
Finally, my best wishes to NEDA-DC for organizing a successful event and hope someday all of the Alumni chapters
could assemble in Houston as well.
Long Live NED.

the founding members of NEDAAAB. Now this association has grown to include over 350 alumni living all over
Alberta. Each year, approximately 30 to 35 new NEDians join our alumni family. Although its not a very huge
number but still this number shows that we are expanding.
NEDAAAB strives hard to contribute positively in the overall growth of Alberta through the continuous introduction
of its best engineering professionals in the local job market. It maintains a high value for its members and it always

CONVENTIONS PAST
First NED Alumni Convention
Houston, TX; July 5, 2005
The First NED Alumni Convention was held in Houston on July 5, 2005.
That year, APPNA was holding its meeting in Houston and spouses of many physicians, who happened to be NEDians
were expected to be present in Houston at the same time. Moin Ahmed was coming in from New York and he
suggested that the Houston NEDians hold a Convention of NED Alumni and officials. He was in touch with
Professors Shamsul Haq and Sahibzada Farooq. This idea was adopted.
Though there was no formal Alumni Association, a group of NEDians (Zareen Sultana, Aman Khan, M J Khan, Arif
Gafur, Shamshad Wali, etc) took the responsibility and the Convention was held at the Sheraton Hotel in the
Houston Galleria area. Approximately 250 people from Dallas area and other places in Texas, Louisiana, New York,
California, Alabama attended the convention. The event had speeches by Professors and local NEDians followed by
dinner and musical entertainment.
The aim of having this Convention was to start a tradition by bringing NEDians together and get to know each other.

Second NED Alumni Convention
Iselin, NJ, August 6, 2006
There used to be social gatherings much before the convention. But when Moin Ahmed approached us and told us
that his umbrella organization is registered and has nonprofit status and we should open an organization as a
chapter, we agreed to hold a convention. The theme of the convention was to create an organization where more
alumni can join in a proper and organized way and use the power of networking to help one another.
The convention was expanded to an all day event. The attendance in the Day session was poor (only 20), but the
evening program saw about 100 NEDians and another 200 guests. Safwan Shah was the keynote speaker.
It was considered a successful convention because the efforts of the organizers to put things together and contact
alumni for the event paid off in the healthy attendance. People came to see their friends and class mates, socialize
with them and get to know one another better.

Fourth NED Alumni Convention
Farmington, CT; November 01, 2008
The growth and evolution of local chapters of NEDians was what led to New England hosting 2008 Convention,
building upon the success of previous conventions. The motivation in hosting the convention was to unite NEDians
in North America. As NED University was facing many challenges that were preventing it to be the prominent
institution it had been in the past. It was believed that a united voice of Alumni through these conventions can
certainly help achieve this goal. It was also felt that the success of many NEDians in business, industry, government
and academia here in the United States could help forge strong and active links in local communities as well as
nationally, by participating and being highly visible and engaged on issues of the larger community
Abul Islam and Aslam Siddiqui with the help of several other dedicated NEDians, spearheaded, coordinated and
monitored all the efforts in putting together the convention and making it a success.

evening was packed with an entertaining and informative program. The keynote was delivered by Mr. Ashraf
Habibullah, the CEO and founder of Computers and Structures, Inc. Mr. Habibullah gave a few lessons to the
audience about structural engineering and then took the crowd on a stroll through memory lane of the old NED
Engineering College. Ashrafs speech accentuated the evening as he received a standing ovation. Saima Khan, Ryan
Khan and Sakhi Kamal entertained the audience with beautiful music and humor. The audience was on their feet
dancing along with Saima Khan and Ryan Khan. Then came the legend everybody was waiting for, Alamgir. He
delighted the audience with a rendition of his everlasting popular songs. The King of Pop, who has been in the
hearts of the music fans for the last four decades, sang with passion. And a moment came when emotions started to
overflow. The audience stood up to give Alamgir a standing ovation. Alamgir responded with even more emotion,
choked voice and teary eyes.
Since everything eventually comes to an end no matter how good, so did the evening of fun and entertainment at
nearly 1 AM. The convention of 2009 attendees will cherish its memories for the rest of their lives!

NED 2010 Chicago; 6th Alumni International Convention
Rosemont, IL; July 30 to August 1, 2010
NED Engineers Association (NEDEA) of Greater Chicago hosted the NED 2010 Chicago: Alumni International
Convention with the theme Bringing NEDians Together. The objective was not just to bring NEDians together for
the weekend, but to create a broad, strong and long lasting alliance. Indeed the crown jewel of a very successful
convention was the declaration on July 31st of establishment of NED International Alumni Network of North
America: NEDIAN-NA.
This was also the first time the convention was held as a three day event. The Friday evening start of festivities did
provided an organized yet informal meeting time and place for NEDians. Indeed, the numerous sights of
handshakes and hugs, of yells and screams, of roars and laughter.. was an experience that you could feel, not
describe. It is not easy to explain you could only be aware of it if you witnessed the zeal and fervor of NEDians
meeting each other; the intensity varying with the distance they had traveled or the time that had lapsed between
the last time when they were together. But, when you listened to them talk to each other, you would not know that
they had been separated by all these miles and years as if their relationship was frozen in time and space.
Notwithstanding the loss of hair and gain of pounds, you were reliving NED once again ban kabab, chai, and all.
And that was just the beginningthere was the morning professional sessions, Success in Professional Life
(moderator: Rasheed Ahmed) and Pioneering Technology and Leadership (moderator Badar Hussain), which earned
the attendees (about 125 of them) PDUs (and a tax write-off!). Then came the customary Pakistani lunch, followed
by the breakout unofficial class reunions.
The day culminated in a sit-in dinner which saw witnessed a piece of NED Alumni History in the announcement of
the establishment of NED International Alumni Network of North America NEDIAN-NA. The evening also featured
a thought-provoking speech by Aftab Rizvi and the ever-amusing antics of Ashraf Habibullah. Then there was the
music program. In addition to up and coming Naila Moghal the audience was reminded of Mehdi Hassan, the
legendary maestro, when their sons sang his songs. The icing on the cake was Alamgir singing and dancing and
motivating a conga-line of middle-aged NEDians snaking around the Westin Ballroom. The madness continued
till wee hours of the morning 4:00 a.m. a new NED Alumni Convention Record!
The next morning was the farewell breakfast, followed by impromptu gathering of whoever was left which saw
exchange of shaaeri and lateefay! Finally they all left, vowing to continue the fun-fare the following year in NJ.
This was a landmark Convention. The eight Alumni Associations in North America had finally come together and
established a North American Alliance an umbrella Association. What had begun five years ago in Houston as a
gathering of hundred or so NEDians, had now become the platform for launching a broad alliance of Alumni across
North America. There was justifiably hope and optimism among the Alumni that, collectively they could endeavor
to make a difference and Build a Better NED and a Better Pakistan.

and Alma Mater will always be drawn to attend these annual NED alumni conventions and reunions. It is always a
joyous and emotional experience. It was a time for renewal and strengthening of our attachments and reliving of
our glorious past and feeling good that we belong to a proud community of accomplished NEDIANS.

The Mystical Land of Pandas

Once there was a land filled with nice, loving
pandas. All of the pandas played with each other
and never fought, but one eerie day, that all
changed
The day started off normal when all of the pandas
woke up. Then they scavenged the land for any
bamboo canes, or fresh water. After that, all the
pandas went off to do ordinary things. But
suddenly a panda cried out, "Human!" All of the
pandas were in a rush. They ran into their favorite
hiding spots, but one baby panda was left alone.
The human ran up to the baby panda, and picked it
up. "Can you talk, baby panda?" she asked.
"Mommy!" it cried, yelling for his mom. The big
momma panda showed up and told the human to
leave. "How did you come here, human?" asked
the big momma panda. "Well theres a big bridge,
leading from our world, to your Mystical land of
pandas," replied the little human. "Oh no! Will you
tell anybody, little girl?" asked the panda. "No, I
wouldn't want them to destroy your land," replied
the sweet little girl. "Good. Now hurry back home,
young girl." And the little girl ran all the way across
the long bride home.
At home her mother asked where she had been.
"At a mystical land of pandas," she said. Oh no she

thought. I told her about the pandas! "Please
dont tell daddy," said the little girl. "I will need to
speak to your father about this." said her mom,
sternly.
When her daddy cam home, the mother told him
where her daughter had been. "So that's what the
bridge leads to? I need to call all of my fellow zoo
workers! We need those pandas for our zoo," he
cheered, happily. The little girl ran up to her room,
crying. S he didnt want all of this to happen. Then
she thought of a plan.
When the clock hit midnight, and everyone was
asleep the little girl sneaked out of her house. She
ran all the way to Mystical Land of Pandas. She
woke up all of the pandas telling each and
everyone that the humans were going to raid
tomorrow and that they should all hide. Then she
ran back home and slipped into her room.
The next day her dad and his friends went to the
Mystical Land. There they didnt find any pandas.
They all went home, upset. The little girl was very
happy and ran to the Mystical Land telling all the
pandas they were safe and could live peacefully
from now on. The pandas thanked her and said
she could visit any time. They all lived Happily Ever
After!

Hope
Whatever you've lost, you will gain
Gain comes with a cost, including pain
Take these words to your heart
And get ready for the end to start

Leader
Doesn't matter what you know,
doesnt matter if you can write.
You need not be a hero,
just a leader with good insight.

To Life
Over the fire, the group, all their worries
forgotten
The deaths of those dear had pained
them hard
And yet today it was as if they had never
been lost
Oh yes, this victory had, had a cost
All had went well the years before war
And now half the army was dead
Some still on a death bed
Today they laughed, danced and raised their drinks high,
To life, they cheered, and to life it was
And as they celebrated, they felt not alone.
Those dead were with them, here today.
Over the dim light of the fireplace those dead and missing were there, laughing, sharing jokes and making toasts.
"To life", they cheered and to life it was.

What is youth to you?
What is youth to me?
To many, we are foolish
How can they be so boorish?
We are unwise
We are inexperienced
We are fools!

Youth is different
It is the age of learning
Not the age of yearning
The age of mystery
The age of history
We are not fools
