3.3 The Inection Point: Full-Bleed Imagery
Full-bleed imagery is another important
element of our system. To effectively
use imagery to tell your story, there are
several things to keep in mind.
Guiding principles:
Imagery must be full-color.
The imagery should support the story
being conveyed on the inection point
and add visual interest.
Full-bleed imagery backgrounds must
provide sufcient contrast for all other
content in the design. Harmony among
all design elements is important; avoid
visual noise.
The imagery must be consistent with
our overall imagery usage.
If your project cannot be printed full-
bleed, you can still use imagery in this
manner, which is called full-frame.
The image is aligned on all sides to the
sub-margin of the grid. Learn more
about grid usage.
Dont layer images or apply any
computer-generated lters.

Shared Branding: FedEx-Authored Materials
The FedEx logo must be larger than the
third-party logo.
Remember that the size of a logo is not
always measured in inches or pixels but
by its visual weight.
Write copy so that the message is
directed from FedEx to the customer.
FedEx is now the preferred
carrier for XYZ Flowers.
Material authored by FedEx is written
and designed fromthe perspective of
FedEx, yet is customized for a third-party
audience. These materials should reect
FedEx in both design and tone.
Design
Follow FedEx brand guidelines and
standards for design.
Logos
You can use the customers logo along-
side the FedEx logo. If you use the
customers logo, size it smaller than
the FedEx logo, and place it in a position
subordinate to the FedEx logo. Maintain
the respective clear spaces of both logos.
Voice
Follow the FedEx voice for copy. Write
the copy so the message is directed from
FedEx to the customer; use third person
for references to the customer.

3.9 Imagery: Cropping Full-Bleed

A crop shifts emphasis from one
element in an image to another it
draws the eye to whats relevant and
compelling. It also creates drama and
improves the composition, which
results in a more powerful image.
When cropping an image, carefully
consider the story youre telling and
make sure the cropped image supports
that story. Creative cropping can change
the message the image conveys; it also
makes the image more dynamic.
Additionally, cropping an image of a
person or people in different ways can
add personality, energy, and simplicity to
the image, and help balance that image
with other elements on the page.
Following are examples of three images

crop style creates a different focus
and energy.

Color is a meaningful element in our visual design system. It promotes
quick recognition of our brand and adds interest.

never used for decoration.
Guiding principles:
Use color for establishing hierarchy.
Avoid overusing color; dont overwhelm
the reader with too many colors.
In print, solid blocks of color must bleed
off the page in all directions.
Balance solid pages of color with areas
of white space to create an open,
accessible layout.
Be aware of contrast. Consider
reversing text to white when using
a darker background. Consider using
black type on a light background.
Never combine the entire FedEx color
palette into rainbow-like graphics.
Gradients, opacity shifts, and transpar-
ency are not allowed in print materials.
