Brown wins primary, dashing
hopes of electing states rst

BALTIMORE Lieutenant Gov. Anthony Brown
on Tuesday easily won the Maryland Democratic
gubernatorial primary, ending a spirited eort
by lesbian Del. Heather Mizeur to become the
nations rst openly gay elected governor.
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Brown
defeated Attorney General Doug Gansler by a
51-24 percent margin. Mizeur (D-Montgomery
County) came in third with 22 percent of the vote.
In November, Marylanders will have a real
choice between returning to the failed Republican
policies of record spending and corporate tax
giveaways, or standing with us as we write the
next chapter in Maryland by strengthening
middle-class families and growing our economy,
said Brown in a statement he issued along with
his running mate, Howard County Executive Ken
Ulman.
Outgoing Gov. Martin OMalley said in a
message his political action committee sent
out shortly after the Associated Press projected
Brown had won that he and the lieutenant
governor worked together to raise the states
minimum wage, secure marriage rights for same-

As the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Courts
decision against the Defense of Marriage Act arrived this week,
the Justice Departments interpretation of the ruling is inspiring
mixed reactions among LGBT advocates, though most are
happy with the results so far.
Last week, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced
in the form of a memo to President Obama the Justice
Department has nished its yearlong review of the Supreme
Court decision striking down Section 3 of DOMA, a law that
prohibited recognition of same-sex marriages at the federal
level.
The DOMA decision, which was handed down alongside
the Supreme Courts ruling on Californias Proposition 8 on
June 26, 2013, will see its one-year anniversary on Thursday.
Some advocates say theyre happy with the administrations
interpretation of the decision, and others want more action in
terms of support with litigation and legislation.
Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for

Gansler and his running mate, state
Del. Jolene Ivey (D-Prince Georges
County), addressed supporters at the
Bethesda North Marriott in Bethesda.
Mizeur became emotional at times
as she spoke at the Maryland Historical
Society in Baltimore. Her wife, Deborah
Mizeur, her parents and running mate,
Rev. Delman Coates of Mt. Ennon Baptist
Church in Clinton, joined her on stage as
she thanked her supporters.
Our journey hasnt ended, she said.
Mizeur, who is not seeking another
term in the Maryland House of Delegates,
said she would support Brown going into
the general election.
I would be his partner in ensuring his
victory in November, she said.
Larry Hogan, who was a member of
former Gov. Bob Ehrlichs administration,
easily defeated three challengers in the
Republican gubernatorial primary. He will
face Brown in November.
Brown raised nearly four times as much
money as Gansler during the lengthy and
often contentious campaign.
Mizeur, whose platform included a plan
to legalize marijuana as a way to fund
universal preschool in the state, was the
rst gubernatorial candidate since 1994
to accept public campaign funds.
Brown and Gansler exchanged
increasingly pointed attacks against
each other during the nal weeks of the
campaign. These include the attorney
general last week reiterating his previous
claim that Equality Maryland traded its
endorsement of the lieutenant governor
for his support of a transgender rights bill
that OMalley signed into law in May.
The Equality Maryland PAC is delighted
that Democratic voters have chosen
Anthony Brown and Ken Ulman for the
nomination for governor, said Equality
Maryland Executive Director Carrie
Evans in a statement. The Brown/Ulman
administration will work hard to ensure
we keep moving forward on issues of
importance to the LGBT communities of
Maryland.
State Sen. Brian Frosh (D-Montgomery
County) defeated state Del. Jon Cardin
(D-Baltimore County) in the Democratic
primary for attorney general by a 48-31
percent margin. State Del. Aisha Braveboy
(D-Prince Georges County) came in third
with 21 percent of the vote.
Frosh will face Towson lawyer Jerey
Pritzker in the general election.
I cant express how thankful I am to
Maryland voters, said Frosh on Twitter
after he won his primary. We look
forward to keep going forward.
State Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County), whos gay,
defeated Gender Rights Maryland
Executive Director Dana Beyer by a 58-42
percent margin in Senate District 18.
I am pleased with the victory and look
forward to working to make Maryland a
more prosperous, fair and welcoming
place for everyone, Madaleno told the
Washington Blade.
Beyer, a longtime transgender
rights advocate, in a statement wished
Madaleno all the best as he continues to
represent our district in Annapolis.
I enjoyed the competition, and I hope
this campaign leads to bigger and better
things for the residents of Montgomery
County over the next four years, she said.
We are faced with daunting problems,
and must remain steadfast to overcome
them and create a more perfect union.
The race between Beyer and Madaleno
in recent weeks became increasingly
heated as they attacked each other over
their role in securing passage of the trans
rights bill the incumbent Montgomery
County Democrat introduced in the
Maryland Senate earlier this year. Equality
Maryland, which endorsed Madaleno, also
criticized Beyer, who is a former member
of the organizations board of directors.
We are proud of the voters in District
18, who rejected the slanderous tactics of
Dana Beyer and overwhelmingly re-elected
Senator Rich Madaleno, said Evans.
Gay state Dels. Ann Kaiser
(D-Montgomery County), Bonnie
Cullison (D-Montgomery County),
Maggie McIntosh (D-Baltimore City),
Mary Washington (D-Baltimore City)
and Luke Clippinger (D-Baltimore City)
all won their respective primaries. State
Del. Peter Murphy (D-Charles County)
won the Democratic primary in the race
for president of the Charles County
Commission.
Gay candidates Spencer Dove and
George Zokle lost their Democratic
primaries in House Districts 32 and 20
respectively. Jonathan Shurberg, chair
of Gender Rights Marylands Legislative
Committee, also lost in the Democratic
primary in House District 20.
State Del. Don Dwyer (R-Anne Arundel
County), an anti-gay incumbent who
pleaded guilty last October to two drunken
boating and driving charges, lost the
Republican primary in House District 31.
All eight members of Marylands
congressional delegation won their
respective primaries.
Reports indicate that turnout was low
throughout the state.

Pride celebration at Fort Meade
Defense Media Activity, which provides news and information on behalf of
the Defense Department to service members around the world, held its rst-
ever Pride month commemoration on Tuesday.
Washington Blade editor Kevin Na was the featured speaker at the event,
held at the Fort Meade Army installation in suburban Maryland, where the DMA
is located. In his hour-long remarks, Na touched on an array of LGBT-related
topics, including the repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell and the continuing ban on
openly transgender service members.
About 75 civilian staers and uniformed service members attended the event,
which was held in a state-of-the-art DMA television studio and recorded for a
future broadcast on YouTube. Na was introduced by Kenji Mundy, the wife of
a retired service member who shared her story of supporting her spouse from
the closet as she served in Iraq. Mundy said she often turned to the Blade for
news and information about DADT and other issues over the years.
It was an honor to speak at Fort Meade, Na said after the event. I never
imagined 12 years ago when I started at the Blade that within a decade the U.S.
military would be inviting openly gay speakers to its bases to celebrate Pride
month.

Name change for AIDS Walk
Whitman-Walker Health this week announced a name change for its annual
AIDS Walk held in October. Beginning this year, the event will be known as The
Walk to End HIV, to reect the progress made in combating HIV/AIDS.
The 28th annual event is scheduled for Oct. 25 in D.C. The name change is
being touted by Whitman-Walker as the rst such change in the country and
the announcement was timed to coincide with National HIV Testing Day, held
June 27.
Whitman-Walkers executive director Don Blanchon was scheduled to o cially

Defrocked Methodist minister reinstated
LEBANON, Pa. A Methodist minister has been reinstated after he was
defrocked for o ciating his gay sons wedding.
I cant even begin to describe how meaningful this refrocking is to me, said
Rev. Frank Schaefer after a church judicial panel announced its decision as the
Patriot-News reported. I never did understand the severity of my punishment
for an act of love for my son Tim. The committee of appeals understood that my
defrocking sought to penalize me not for what I did but for what I might do in
the future.
A church tribunal last November put Schaefer on trial after it found out he
o ciated his sons 2007 wedding in Massachusetts.
Schaefer was suspended for 30 days, but he was defrocked after he refused
to say he would not o ciate any other same-sex weddings.
Todays decision by the committee is a hopeful sign for our LGBTQ
community, said Schaefer as the Patriot-News reported. They recognized that I
was wrongfully punished for standing with those who are discriminated against.
Schaefer has delivered a number of guest sermons at the Foundry United
Methodist Church in D.C. since he was defrocked.
Presbyterians to of ciate gay marriages
DETROIT Members of the Presbyterian General Assembly last week
approved a proposal that allows ministers to o ciate same-sex marriages in
states where they are legal.
The Associated Press reported the policy which received approval during a
meeting of the Presbyterian Churchs top legislative body in Detroit will only
apply to those congregations in which local leaders approve.
Rev. Krystin Granberg of the New York Presbytery which is in one of the
19 states and D.C. in which same-sex couples can legally marry told the
Associated Press that she frequently receives requests from gays and lesbians
who want her to o ciate their weddings.
They want to be married in the church they love and they want me to do it,
she told the newswire. I want pastoral relief.
But Bill Norton, of the Presbytery de Cristo, which includes portions of Arizona
and New Mexico, is among those who opposed the proposal.
The church legislative body during their Detroit meeting also voted
overwhelmingly to recognize same-sex marriage as a Christian institution. The
Presbyterian General Assembly also approved a proposal to dene marriage as
a union between two people as the Associated Press reported.
Trans Okla. House candidate faces run-of
OKLAHOMA CITY A transgender candidate for the Oklahoma House of
Representatives on June 24 secured enough votes to force a run-o against her
leading Democratic opponent.
Paula Sophia will face Jason Dunnington in the race to succeed lesbian state
Rep. Kay Floyd (D-Oklahoma City) in House District 88.
Floyd won her Democratic primary for Senate District 46 that gay state Sen.
Al McAery (D-Oklahoma City) currently holds. He announced his campaign to
succeed Congressman James Lankford who won the GOP primary in the race to
succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn.

Anti-gay leader reportedly
consulting for Comcast

A conservative leader known for his
vehement opposition to LGBT rights is
engaged in work on Capitol Hill on behalf
of the cable juggernaut that owns the
progressive-leaning network MSNBC,
according to two sources familiar with
the industry.
Ralph Reed, who led eorts for the
recently concluded Faith & Freedom
Coalition conference in D.C., has been
doing uno cial consulting work on
Capitol Hill on behalf of Comcast, which
has owned NBCUniversal, including
MSNBC, in its entirety since 2011.
Sources familiar with Reeds work, who
spoke on condition of anonymity, said
they could not document that Reed has
been engaged in this work, but that its
well-established among insiders.
Its widely known because Ralphs been
on conference calls, one insider said. Its
been at least eight years; its been quite
some time.
Century Strategies, the Atlanta-based
rm Reed owns, has been on retainer
with Comcast for eight or 10 years, the
source said.
Reed has a long history of working
to curtail LGBT rights as a leader in the
social conservative movement. During
the 1990s, he was executive director of
the Christian Coalition and criticized the
policies of the Clinton administration.
Just last week, Reed, during the annual
Faith & Freedom Coalition conference,
made the striking comparison of federal
court rulings in favor of same-sex marriage
to the U.S. Supreme Courts decision in the
Dred Scott case, which a rmed slavery
rights in the United States.
Anybody heard lately that were losing
the marriage issue? Anybody heard that
argument? You notice some similarities?
he said. Im not comparing slavery to
same-sex marriage, OK? Im just pointing
out that when you have these ghts, whats
interesting is that if you look at same-sex
marriage, its now legal in 17 states.
Only six of them, six out of those 17, six
out of 50 states, had done it by referendum
or by state legislature, Reed continued. In
every other case, it was imposed by courts.
Just like the courts had to impose Dred
Scott. Because they couldnt do it on the
country because the country didnt agree
with it. The country, by the way, doesnt
agree with same-sex marriage.
Reeds math is a little o. A total of 19
states and D.C. have enacted marriage
equality. And 11 states and D.C. have
legalized marriage equality through the
legislative or referendum process, although
Reed reportedly said he wasnt counting
states after the Supreme Courts decision
against the Defense of Marriage Act.
The anti-gay leaders opposition to same-
sex marriage stands in striking contrast
to much of the commentary featured on
MSNBC, the Comcast-owned network that
seeks to engage a progressive audience
and covers LGBT issues.
Comcast didnt respond to a request for
comment about its reported engagement
of Reeds company. Century Strategies
also didnt respond to a request for
comment from the Washington Blade to
conrm the reports.
Reeds anti-gay views have landed
him in trouble before. In 2005, Microsoft
dumped Reed as its lobbyist following
backlash from the LGBT community
because the company dropped support
from a non-discrimination bill in
Washington. Microsoft had hired Reed
in the run-up to the 2000 election and
reportedly had paid him $20,000 a month.
According to sources, Reeds
conservative outreach on Capitol Hill is
short of the legal denition of lobbying.
Reed would have to register with Comcast
if he were to engage in o cial lobbying
for the company.
Sources are disclosing Reeds work on
behalf of Comcast to the Washington
Blade just months after Comcast
proposed to acquire Time Warner Cable
for $45.2 billion.

Susan Rice criticizes Russia, others over LGBT records
White House forum
focuses on international
rights issues
National Security Advisor Susan Rice
on Tuesday criticized several countries,
including Russia, for their treatment
of LGBT citizens during a White House
forum on international LGBT issues.
Rice also singled out Uganda and Nigeria
over draconian anti-gay laws that took
eect in those countries earlier this year.
She noted that Brunei could become the
eighth country in which those found guilty of
consensual same-sex sexual acts could face
the death penalty if the second phase of the
new Bruneian penal code takes eect.
Rice categorized the Russian law
that bans the promotion of so-called
propaganda to minors as pernicious
and noted a proposal seeks to allow the
government to take children away from
their gay parents. She also highlighted
Harvey Milk, murdered Cameroonian LGBT
rights advocate Eric Ohena Lembembe
and slain Ugandan activist David Kato.
Change never happens without
passionate people willing to sacrice for
what is right, said Rice, referring to the
45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots
and other civil rights milestones in the
U.S. Unfortunately in too many places,
being gay or transgender is enough
to make someone the target of slurs,
torment and violence.
Rice also announced the National Gay
and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has
joined a U.S.-backed initiative designed to
bolster global LGBT advocacy eorts.
Political and social progress indeed go
hand in hand, she said during a speech
at a White House forum on global LGBT
rights that took place at the Eisenhower
Executive O ce Building. Americas
support for LGBT rights is not just a
national cause, but a global enterprise.
National Gay and Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce President Justin Nelson
told the Washington Blade that his
organization through the nearly $4 million
public-private partnership the U.S. Agency
for International Development launched
last April will seek to develop national
LGBT chambers of commerce and other
business groups. He said his organization
hopes to cultivate LGBT entrepreneurship
in Europe, Colombia, India and other
countries in which it currently works.
When you empower LGBT people
through economics, you give an economic
identity to people, said Nelson. People
listen. It moves minds.
LGBT rights advocates from the U.S. and
around the world were among the hundreds
who attended the White House forum.
Activists from Jamaica, Ukraine,
Colombia, Venezuela, Uganda, Malawi,
Nigeria and the Philippines on Monday
discussed the support they said they
receive from the U.S. during a panel at
the Russell Senate O ce Building the
Council for Global Equality organized.
Angie Umbac of the Rainbow Rights
Project in the Philippines said the U.S.
Embassy in her country has sponsored
trainings for authorities who investigate
human rights abuses. She said a lawyer
with the American Civil Liberties Union
has also spoken with Filipino law students.
The embassys been very, very good to
the community, said Umbac.
Mauricio Albarracn Caballero,
executive director of Colombia Diversa,
a Colombian LGBT advocacy group,
described the U.S. Embassy in Bogot,
the South American countrys capital, as
our most important ally in the ght for
LGBT rights.
USAID in 2009 began working with the
Colombian National Police on how to
more eectively work with the countrys
LGBT advocacy organizations. Colombia
Diversa and the Santamara Fundacin, a
transgender rights organization in the city of
Cali, have received USAID grants and other
support to expand their eorts to document
anti-LGBT violence and work with authorities
to better prosecute those responsible.
The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund
and the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for
Justice, which are also part of the LGBT
Global Development Partnership, over the
last year have conducted two trainings in
Colombia that are designed to allow LGBT
Colombians to become more engaged in
their countrys political process.
This support is fundamental for our
actions, said Albarracn.
Tamara Adrin Hernndez, a trans
Venezuelan lawyer and LGBT rights
advocate, said the U.S. and her country
continue to have a very hostile bilateral
relationship amid ongoing protests
between supporters and opponents of
President Nicols Maduro who took o ce
last year after his predecessor, Hugo
Chvez, succumbed to cancer.
Our activities with the U.S. Embassy
are limited, she said.
Rashidi Williams of Queer Alliance Nigeria
said the Nigerian LGBT rights movements
relationship with the U.S. Embassies and
American consulates in his country has
been very important for us.
He said the U.S. Embassy in Abuja,
the Nigerian capital, worked with local
advocates to develop media strategies
around a bill that sought to punish those
who enter into same-sex marriages with
up to 14 years in prison, ban anyone from
o ciating a gay union or entering into
a same-sex amorous relationship and
joining an LGBT group.
Williams said American o cials have not
done any programmatic work with local
activists beyond meetings. He said the
U.S. Embassy has been very quiet since
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan
signed the anti-gay bill into law in January.
President Obama in 2011 ordered
agencies responsible for the
implementation of U.S. foreign policy to
support LGBT rights.
Obama last December selected retired

Caitlin Cahow to join the U.S. delegation to the
2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The
White House last week announced a travel
ban against Ugandan o cials responsible for
anti-LGBT human rights abuses.
Rhode Island Congressman David Cicilline
on June 19 introduced a bill that would ban
o cials responsible for anti-LGBT human
rights abuses in their respective countries
from entering the U.S. and mandate the
State Department to document them
in its annual human rights report. U.S.
Sen. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) last week
introduced a bill that would create a special
envoy within the State Department who
would coordinate Washingtons eorts in
support of global LGBT rights.
Gay congressman weds longtime partner
One of the eight openly LGB members of Congress wed his longtime partner
in New York last week, becoming the third member of Congress in history to be
in a same-sex marriage while in o ce.
Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), who represents New Yorks 18th
congressional district in the U.S. House, wed his partner of 22 years, Randy Gene
Florke, at the Church of St. Mary-in-the-Highlands in Cold Spring, N.Y. O ciating
was Rev. Fr. Shane Scott-Hamblen.
Maloney and Florke issued a joint statement on the day of the ceremony in
which they described the signicance of the occasion.
Even after 22 years together, were overwhelmed by how blessed we feel to
celebrate this special day with our friends and family, the joint statement says. With
our three kids by our side, this couldnt have been a more perfect day. Thank you to
all our friends near and far for their love and support as we continue to ght to ensure
all families can experience the joys of a lifetime commitment.
Maloney, 47, represents the lower Hudson Valley region of New York and is
the rst openly gay member of Congress from the state. Florke, 51, is a real
estate and design executive in New York City for The Rural Connection, Inc.,
which he founded in 1996.
The couple resides in Cold Spring, N.Y., and have three children, Reinel, whos
24, Daley, whos 13, and Essie, whos 11.
Maloney weds as he faces tough re-election prospects to retain his seat
because of a challenge in the centrist district from former Rep. Nan Hayworth,
whom he ousted in the 2012 election.
The other sitting member of Congress in a same-sex marriage is Rep. Mark Pocan
(D-Wis.), who prior to his election to the U.S. House married Philip Frank in 2006.
The rst sitting member of Congress to enter into a same-sex marriage was
former Rep. Barney Frank, who wed his partner Jim Ready in Massachusetts in
2012 before retiring from Congress. The late Rep. Gerry Studds also married his
partner Dean Herra, but that wedding didnt take place until 2004, which was
years after Studds left o ce.

Earnest wont rule out religious exemption in LGBT order
No details given on
timing or scope of
planned directive

White House Press Secretary Josh
Earnest on Tuesday wouldnt rule out
the possibility that a religious exemption
would be included in a planned executive
order barring anti-LGBT discrimination
among federal contractors.
Unfortunately, Im not in a position from
here to give you any insight about the content
of what an executive order like this might
include, Earnest said. But this is something
that the presidents team is drafting, and
once they have nished the drafting of that
and are ready for the president to sign it,
well be able to talk to you in a little more
detail about what actually included in there,
and what the consequences are for the
presidents signature.
Earnest declined to elaborate when
asked a follow-up question about
whether the White House is awaiting an
imminent ruling from the U.S. Supreme
Court in the case of Sebelius v. Hobby
Lobby before settling on the nal details
of the executive order.
Its my understanding that theres
an ongoing process as it relates to the
drafting of an executive order that would
take the kinds of steps the president
talked about quite a bit, Earnest said.
But, at this point, I dont have any update
for you in terms of the content or the
timing of that executive order.
Observers have speculated the Hobby
Lobby case, which will determine whether
employers may qualify for a religious
exemption under Obamacare, may have
an impact on the executive order. If the
Supreme Court issues a broad exemption,
the White House may feel compelled to
include a religious exemption within the
directive to comply with the court order.
LGBT advocates, including from
GetEQUAL, the Human Rights Campaign,
the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and
the National Center for Lesbian Rights,
have insisted that no religious exemption
be included in the executive order or that
an LGBT directive should be along the
lines of the protections aorded to other
groups under Executive Order 11246.
But one fan of including a religious
exemption in the executive order is Sen.
Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). After the White House
announced plans for the order, Hatch said the
directive should include a broad exemption
like the one found in the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act because the legislation
strikes a good balance. Hatch was among
the 10 Republicans who voted for ENDA on
the Senate oor.
Heather Cronk, co-director of GetEQUAL,
said in reaction to Earnest on the executive
order that the inclusion of a religious
exemption would be simply unthinkable.
Similar to the message that a broad
religious exemption in ENDA sends that
discrimination against LGBTQ people is
somehow acceptable and understandable
religious exemptions in an executive
order would cement second-class status for
LGBTQ Americans, Cronk said. The choice
here is clear either the president believes
we should be equal under the law or he
doesnt. I dont see any gray area here.
The Blade also followed up with a
question on why the White House was
announcing an executive order at this time
when it could have acted anytime over
the course of the administration. Before
Earnest could answer, a White House intern
in the brieng room fainted, prompting the
spokesperson to terminate the brieng as
she arose and said she was unharmed.
Earnest already addressed the issue
of timing for the executive order during
a gaggle on Air Force One just after
the news broke that Obama would
move ahead with the directive, saying it
resulted from inaction on the part of the
Republican-controlled House.
Last year we did see the Senate pass the
so-called ENDA legislation, Earnest said.
We have for several months now been
encouraging the House to take up and pass
that legislation. Unfortunately, this is yet
another example of Republicans blocking
progress on the kind of issue that has pretty
strong support all across the country.
Boehner celebrates Civil Rights Act, but wont bring up ENDA

U.S. House Speaker John Boehner
(R-Ohio) a rmed on Tuesday the
importance of non-discrimination
protections during a Capitol Hill event
commemorating the 50th anniversary of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964, even though he
has refused to bring up the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act for a vote.
Boehner was among the congressional
leaders who attended the event, which
took place in the Rotunda of the U.S.
Capitol, as they posthumously awarded
Martin Luther King, Jr. and his wifeCoretta
Scott King the Congressional Gold Medal,
the nations highest civilian honor. The
Civil Rights Act was signed by President
Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964.
On July 2, 1964, Congress completed
what may be the most fundamental,
most consequential legislation of our
long history, Boehner said. The Civil
Rights Act of 1964 recognizes that every
citizen has the right to pursue happiness
without discrimination, or segregation,
on the grounds of race, color, religion or
national origin.
Boehners praise for the Civil RIghts
Act of 1964, which bars discrimination
in employment, housing and public
accommodations, stands in sharp
contrast to his refusal to bring up
ENDA, which would bar employers from
discriminating against LGBT workers, and
his personal opposition to the legislation.
I am opposed to discrimination of
any kind, in the workplace and anyplace
else, Boehner said in November. But I
think this legislation that Ive dealt with
as chairman of The Education & The
Workforce Committee long before I was
back in the leadership is unnecessary
and would provide a basis for frivolous
lawsuits. People are already protected in
the workplace. Im opposed to continuing
this. Listen, I understand people have
diering opinions on this issue, and I
respect those opinions. But as someone
whos worked in the employment law
area for all my years in the State House
and all my years here, I see no basis or no
need for this legislation.
Boehners argument against ENDA is
similar to what opponents of civil rights
legislation such as the Civil Rights Act have
said in the past and his points have been
rejected by LGBT advocates as inaccurate.
Michael Steel, a Boehner spokesperson,
said in response to an inquiry about why
Boehner would celebrate passage of the
Civil Rights Act, but not bring up ENDA
for vote, I think the Speakers position on
that legislation is clear.
ENDA passed late last year in the
Senate on a bipartisan basis, but remains
pending in the House despite the growth
of Republican and Democratic co-
sponsors. ENDA supporters say the votes
are present for passage in the U.S. House,
which is all that needs to happen before
President Obama can sign the legislation.
Wade Henderson, president and CEO
of The Leadership Conference on Civil
& Human Rights, said Boehner should
put his money where his mouth is if
he believes the Civil Rights Act is an
important piece of legislation.
Civil and human rights must be
measured by a single yardstick,
Henderson said. Speaker Boehner
should be applauded for extolling
the virtues of the Civil Rights Act, but
that acknowledgement comes with a
responsibility to ensure that no worker
is denied employment protections and
that no citizen is denied the right to vote.
Speaker Boehners words will be empty
should he continue to be a roadblock to
passage of ENDA, immigration reform,
and the Voting Rights Amendment Act.
Also speaking at the event in favor of
the Civil Rights Act was Senate Minority
Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), whos
facing a tough challenge from Democrat
Alison Lundergran Grimes in his re-
election bid this fall. Despite his support
for the Civil Rights Act, McConnell was
among the Republicans who voted no
on ENDA when it came up for a vote in
the Senate last year.
Democrats who spoke during the
event were House Minority Leader Nancy
Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Majority Leader
Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Rep. John Lewis
(D-Ga.), Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and
Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia
Fudge (D-Calif.). A main theme among the
Democrats was bringing up the Voting
Rights Amendment of 2014 for a vote.

Appeals court strikes Utah
marriage ban; fedl panel
overturns in Ind.

The U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals
on Wednesday struck down Utahs ban
on same-sex marriage, becoming the rst
appeals court to rule on same-sex marriage
since the Supreme Courts decision against
the Defense of Marriage Act.
In a 2-1 decision, a three-judge panel on
the Tenth Circuit ruled Utahs ban violates
equal protection rights under the Fourteenth
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Judges
Jerome Holmes and Carlos Lucero were in
the majority, and Judge Paul Kelly Jr. was the
dissent.
Writing for the majority in a 65-page
decision, Lucero determined the district
court that initially struck down Utahs
ban on same-sex marriage in December
was correct in ruling the ban violates the
Fourteenth Amendment.
We hold that the Fourteenth
Amendment protects the fundamental right
to marry, establish a family, raise children,
and enjoy the full protection of a states
marital laws, Lucero writes. A state may
not deny the issuance of a marriage license
to two persons, or refuse to recognize their
marriage, based solely upon the sex of the
persons in the marriage union.
But same-sex couples wont be able
to marry immediately in Utah. In light of
the U.S. Supreme Courts decision to stay
same-sex weddings in Utah pending appeal
following the district court ruling against
the states ban on same-sex marriage, the
judges incorporated their own stay pending
appeal as part of their decision.
The 10th Circuits decision to strike
down the bans on same-sex marriage
wont come as a surprise to anyone
who observed the oral arguments in
the case in April. Lucero and Holmes
expressed skepticism at the time over
the constitutionality of the states law, but
Kelly seemed to side with the state.
Also before the same three-judge
panel on the 10th Circuit is a federal
lawsuit, known Bishop v. Smith, which
is challenging Oklahomas ban on same-
sex marriage. Court Clerk Elisabeth
Shumakertold the Washington Blade she
has no information about the Oklahoma
decision being handed down and didnt
expect a ruling on that states marriage
ban on the same day as the Utah decision.
On the same day as the Utah decision,
a federal court in Indiana struck down
that states ban on same-sex marriage,
aording another win in the unbroken
string of victories to supporters of
marriage equality in the wake of the
Supreme Courts decision against the
Defense of Marriage Act.
In a 36-page ruling, U.S. District Judge
Richard Young, a Clinton appointee, ruled
the states ban on same-sex marriage
violates due process and equal protection
under the Fourteenth Amendment to the
U.S. Constitution.
It is clear that the fundamental right
to marry shall not be deprived to some
individuals based solely on the person
they choose to love, Young writes. In
time, Americans will look at the marriage
of couples such as Plaintis, and refer to
it simply as a marriage not a same- sex
marriage. These couples, when gender
and sexual orientation are taken away,
are in all respects like the family down the
street. The Constitution demands that we
treat them as such.
Young doesnt include a stay in his ruling
and makes clear his order will take eect
on the same day the decision was handed
down. Same-sex couples are expected to
be able to wed in Indiana immediately.

We are afraid: Ukrainians say govt remains homophobic
Mother, gay son meet
lawmakers, White House
during U.S. visit
Helen Globa, co-founder of Tergo, a
support group for parents and friends
of LGBT Ukrainians whose name means
reinforcement in Latin, found out that her son,
Bogdan, was gay when he was in high school
after she found poems on his computer.
She said she spent the next eight years
suering as she tried to learn more about
homosexuality while trying to hide what
was happening in her family. Globa told
the Washington Blade during a June 13
interview at PFLAGs Northwest Washington
o ces with her son that a psychologist
in the city of Poltava told her she had to
change her attitude towards the situation.
Globa told the Blade that she and her
psychologist frequently discussed how
other parents respond to their childrens
homosexuality. She said it was her son who
ultimately came up with the idea of her
organization that she co-founded last year.
Eight years of suering and research is
just a waste of precious time, said Globa.
Globa and her son, who is the executive
director of Fulcrum, a Ukrainian LGBT
advocacy organization, spoke to the
Blade during an eight-day trip to D.C. and
Maryland that ended on June 18.
They met with U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy
(D-Conn.), o cials at the White House, the
State Department, the U.S. Peace Corps
and LGBT rights advocates from Spectrum
Human Rights and other groups while in the
nations capital. The Globas also participated
in a protest outside the Russian embassy in
Northwest D.C. on June 12.
They marched in the annual Baltimore
Pride parade on June 14 with a PFLAG
contingent.
For us its an advocacy trip, Bogdan
Globa told the Blade.
Bogdan Globa, now 26, in 2008 became
the rst openly LGBT person to testify
before a parliament in the former Soviet
Union when he spoke against a bill
that would have banned so-called gay
propaganda in Ukraine.
After his speech in parliament, I didnt
sleep for a week, said Helen Globa,
discussing concerns for her sons safety.
I was just waiting and praying.
The Globas were among the hundreds
of thousands of people who protested
in Kievs Independence Square known
as Maidan against then-President
Viktor Yanukovychs decision to reject
an agreement that would have brought
Ukraine closer to the European Union.
The protests began last November,
but Bogdan Globa told the Blade through
his mother who interpreted that radical
parties would have attacked him and
other LGBT rights advocates if they had
come into the square with rainbow ags.
Its not about LGBT, he said. We stood with
the European ag or the Ukrainian ag. We
didnt stand with the rainbow ag or something
else and we didnt say rise for LGBT.
Bogdan Globa was carrying tires for
makeshift barricades in the Maidan on Feb.
19 when police opened re on protesters
and killed more than 100 of them.
Helen Globa, who had moved to Kiev
from Poltava in 2012, was unable to
travel to the square because authorities
had closed the Ukrainian capitals subway
and she did not know her way without it
because she had just moved to the city
from Poltava. Helen Globa was also sick.
The Siberia-native who studied in
Uzbekistan told the Blade she received
hostile text messages from her friends
and former classmates in Russia that
asked her why pro-European Ukrainians
wanted war and said they may be the
reason for the Third World War.
I was just trying to explain to people,
but they didnt listen, said Helen Globa.
Meanwhile, she was worried about
her son who told the Blade that he didnt
realize the extent of the violence that had
taken place in the Maidan on Feb. 19 until
he returned home later that night.
The Maidan was taking place in a very
large space, said Bogdan Globa. You saw
just pieces and bits of something happening.
You realized and you could see the whole
picture when you got home.
The Globas said the ongoing violence and
escalating tensions between pro-Russian
separatists and militants and Ukrainian
troops in the eastern part of the country
have had a signicant impact on the regions
LGBT residents and their supporters.
Bogdan Globas organization has an
o ce in the city of Donetsk.
He said the self-proclaimed Donetsk
Peoples Republic that has declared itself
independent from Kiev has banned so-
called gay propaganda to minors in the
region over which they claim jurisdiction.
Bogdan Globa told the Blade members of a
pro-Russian paramilitary group earlier this
month attacked those who attended a gay
party that took place at a Donetsk nightclub.
Helena Globa said that many of her
organizations members who live in
eastern Ukraine will not travel to meetings,
events and other gatherings because of
the deteriorating security situation.
It has a very negative inuence on our
work, she told the Blade.
Putin is a dictator
Ukraines LGBT rights record remains poor
compared to other European countries.
Amnesty International and other
human rights groups have noted anti-
LGBT discrimination and violence
remain widespread in Ukraine. Bogdan
Globa experienced anti-gay bullying and
harassment while in high school and at a
local university so he decided to move to
Kiev in 2005.
Poltava is very homophobic, said his
mother.
Parliamentarians since 2012 have
considered two gay propaganda
measures similar to the law that Russian
President Vladimir Putin signed last
June, but they have not had a nal vote.
The lawmaker who sponsored the most
recent bill is no longer a member of the
Ukrainian Parliament because he is from
Crimea and the Kremlin annexed the
strategic peninsula in March.
Putin is a dictator, Bogdan Globa told
the Blade, pointing out that Crimea should
return to the Ukrainian homeland.
Its very complicated to have a positive
attitude towards him.
Olena Shevchenko, a Ukrainian
LGBT rights advocate, told the Blade
in April that lawmakers who introduce
repressive bills only give legitimacy to
such violations.
Ukrainian parliamentarians in March
with the apparent approval of European
o cials in Brussels approved an anti-
discrimination measure that did not
include sexual orientation.

Lesbian conrmed to Puerto Rico Supreme Court
The Puerto Rico Senate on Monday conrmed the nomination of a lawyer who
will become the rst openly gay judge on the U.S. commonwealths Supreme Court.
Senators initially approved Maite Oronoz Rodrguezs nomination in a voice
vote, but they debated it after Sens. Mara de Lourdes Santiago and Larry
Seilhamer made the request as the newspaper el Nuevo Da reported. They
ultimately approved Oronozs nomination by a 16-10 vote.
The constitution says that the dignity of the human being is inviolable; we are
all equal under the law, said Senate President Eduardo Bhata. We have the
ability to build a democracy where everyone is equal under the law.
The most important things are her professional qualications, the historic nature
of her nomination and her work as a lawyer, added Sen. Tony Fas Alzamora.
Former Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz is among the six senators who
opposed Orodozs nomination.
Gov. Alejandro Garca Padilla earlier this month nominated Oronoz to ll a
vacancy on the court.
Oronozs partner, Gina Mndez Mir, is Bhatas chief-of-sta.
I applaud her for this recognition, said Garca in a statement after the Senate
approved Oronozs nomination. I echo my words from when I nominated her:
She is an example of what this new generation can oer to Puerto Rico.
Pedro Julio Serrano of Puerto Rico Para Tod@s, a Puerto Rican LGBT advocacy
group, also applauded Oronoz.

but called on him to support litigation
to extend marriage rights to same-sex
couples nationwide.
Todays announcement that same-sex
spouses in states that refuse to respect
their marriages will be denied the Social
Security benets they have paid for and
earned, and that LGBT veterans who
have served this country will be treated
as second-class citizens, underscores
how far we have yet to go to achieve true
equality, Kendell said. We call on the
administration to redouble its eorts to
stand up for these families and to support
litigation to challenge discriminatory and
unconstitutional state laws that exclude
same-sex couples and their children from
the protections of marriage.
The administration has aorded many
benets to married same-sex couples
following the decision last year, ensuring
they ow to gay couples regardless of
whether they live in a jurisdiction where
same-sex marriage is legal. Among those
were benets related to immigration,
taxes, employer-provided pensions and
federal employee benets.
But in the memo, Holder says the Justice
Department concluded as part of its review
it cannot extend certain Social Security
and veterans benets to these couples if
they live in one of 31 states where same-
sex couples cannot legally marry.
Because federal law governing certain
Social Security and veterans benets looks
to the place of residence, not the place
of celebration, in determining whether
a couple is married, the administration
determined Congress must pass additional
legislation to extend these benets to
married same-sex couples living in non-
marriage equality states.
Despite the denial of these benets,
most LGBT advocates praised the Obama
administration for its response to the
courts ruling.
Rea Carey, executive director of the
National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, gave
the Obama administration a grade of A
for the extension of benets to married
same-sex couples.
The U.S. Attorney General and the
administration deserves an A grade for
their eorts to fully implement the Supreme
Courts Windsor decision, a long list of
changes that deeply and positively impacts
the lives of millions of same-sex couples
and their families, Carey said. Moreover,
it speaks volumes about the values of
inclusion and diversity that underpins
President Obamas approach to delivering
freedom and justice for all Americans.
Also happy on the day the completion
of the review was announced was Tico
Almeida, president of Freedom to Work.
Last week, Labor Secretary Thomas
Perez announced his department is
issuing a new rule to ensure individuals in
same-sex marriages can take leave from
an employer to care for a spouse under
the Family & Medical Leave Act. This new
rule builds o an earlier announcement
that this benet would be available in the
wake of the DOMA decision, but only for
same-sex couples applying for the benet
in states with marriage equality.
Almeida, who had pushed the
administration to make the rule change,
said the new policy will let employers in all
50 states know that gay and lesbian married
couples must be treated with respect when
they seek workplace leave to take care of a
same-sex spouse that gets into an accident
or is diagnosed with an illness.
There is no doubt that this
administration has already done and
continues to do more to promote LGBT
fairness than any other in our nations
history, Almeida concluded.
But that sense of satisfaction wasnt
shared by everyone, particularly LGBT
groups that were pressuring the Obama
administration to enforce Social Security
and veterans laws in such a way that married
same-sex couples could receive related
benets in non-marriage equality states.
Vickie Henry, a sta attorney with
Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders,
expressed general satisfaction with the
implementation of the DOMA decision,
but acknowledged her group had
previously said all Social Security benets
should ow to married same-sex couples
regardless of where they live.
We have advocated with the White
House and the Department of Justice that
there was room for them to interpret the
Social Security Act to allow the extension
of benets, Henry said. Theyve reached
the conclusion that theyve reached. We
thought that they had some room, and
they are pursuing a legislative solution.
Henry advised same-sex couples that
live in non-marriage equality states and
think theyre entitled to Social Security
benets to keep those claims alive and
apply despite the administrations post-
DOMA policy.
Weve had people here whove called
us because they had a spouse and they
couldnt continue to live in their home, and
they lost their home, because they werent
immediately able to access their Social
Security benets, Henry said. The harm
here for real people can be quite signicant.
Despite the general rule about
withholding Social Security benets
for married same-sex couples in non-
marriage equality states, the Justice
Department found limited workaround.
If a married same-sex couple applies
for benets in a marriage-equality state,
but moves to another state that doesnt
recognize the marriage, the agency wont
withhold benets based on the place of
residence standard during or after the
application process.
Further, same-sex couples living in states
with domestic partnerships or civil unions,
but not marriage equality, would be eligible
for Social Security benets. Those states
are Colorado, Wisconsin and Nevada.
Stephen Peters, president of the
LGBT military group known as American
Military Partner Association, called on
Congress to take action, saying hes
saddened and frustrated that the Justice
Department has decided it cannot aord
to extend spousal veterans benets
to same-sex couples in states without
marriage equality.
While the administration has made
great eorts in providing legal recognition
to married same-sex couples wherever they
determined it legally possible, it simply isnt
enough, Peter said. Our LGBT veterans
have served, sacriced, and in some cases
died right alongside their heterosexual
counterparts, and our nation cannot allow
this injustice to continue.
As with Social Security, veterans benets
would still be able to ow to married same-
sex couples in non-marriage equality
states for the purposes of 1) transfer of
GI-Bill education benets to dependents;
2) access to group life insurance and family
insurance group life insurance programs;
3) and eligibility for dependent and survivor
education assistance.
Moreover, the VA recently instituted
a rule change to allow joint burial for
the same-sex partners of veterans in
domestic partnerships or civil unions.
But according to the American Military
Partner Association, veterans in non-
marriage equality states still wont
have access to important benets like
ChampVA (health care for spouses of
disabled veterans), higher disability
compensation for disabled veterans with
dependents, full access to VA home loans,
and many survivor benets for widows.
One piece of legislation that would
extend all of these benets is the Respect
for Marriage Act, sponsored by Rep.
Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) in the House and
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in the
Senate, which has a certainty principle
that would ensure the federal benets of
marriage would ow to married same-sex
couples regardless of where they live.
The Social Security & Marriage Equality
Act, introduced by Sen. Patty Murray
(D-Wash.), would address issues related
to Social Security benets, while an
amendment introduced by Sen. Jeanne
Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.)
along the lines of the Charlie Morgan Act
would address veterans benets. The
Veteran Spouses Equal Treatment Act,
sponsored by Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) in
the U.S. House, would also address issues
related to veterans benets.
But movement on any of these bills
would be extremely di cult in the
Republican-controlled U.S. House, and
even in the Democratic-controlled U.S.
Senate given the limited time remaining
in the legislative calendar this Congress.
Moreover, whether President Obama
would work to guide them toward
passage remains to be seen.
Shin Inouye, a White House
spokesperson, enumerated the bills that
could address the situation when asked
if President Obama would call for a vote
on them in the U.S. Senate by years end.
We look forward to working with
lawmakers to pass legislation like the
Respect for Marriage bills introduced by
Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Congressman
Jerrold Nadler, the Social Security &
Marriage Equality Act introduced by Sens.
Mark Udall and Patty Murray, and the
Veterans Aairs amendment proposed
by Sens. Mark Udall and Jeanne Shaheen
earlier this year, Inouye said.
Another ruling from the U.S. Supreme
Court instituting marriage equality
throughout the country would also
address the situation. Litigation continues
to percolate through the judiciary, so a
nal ruling from the Supreme Court on
the marriage issue is expected by the
middle of next year.
Dena Iverson, a Justice Department
spokesperson, emphasized the
importance of legislation as a means to
address the issue when asked about the
pending litigation.
I will refer you to our release today that
said, The administration looks forward to
working with Congress to x these parts
of the law to ensure that Americans who
rely on these programs can obtain these
essential benets no matter where they
live, Iverson said.

Trans activist to speak at Frederick Pride
Fresh o of being named the Activist of the Year at Baltimore Pride, Sharon
Brackett will be the principal speaker at Frederick Pride on Saturday. Brackett, a
Laurel, Md. resident, will discuss transgender issues.
In 2010, Brackett was selected by Washington SmartCEO Magazine as one of
Washingtons Smart100 CEOs for 2010 and then again, after transition, in 2011.
She is a founder of Gender Rights Maryland, a trans civil rights organization, and
serves as its board chair.
The festival takes place from 12-6 p.m. at Carroll Creek Park in the downtown
area of Frederick.
City Uprising plans health fair
As part of National HIV Testing Day on Saturday, a series of block party events
are scheduled that are aimed at providing more than 800 community members
with HIV testing, health screenings, and wrap-around services. These events will
be held at ve Baltimore City sites, located in zip codes facing high rates of HIV
and other health disparities.
Hosted by The JACQUES Initiative of the Institute of Human Virology at the
University of Maryland School of Medicine in partnership with the Gallery
Church of Baltimore and Hope Springs, services will include free HIV testing
and linkage to care, blood pressure screening, healthy lifestyle education,
medication reconciliation, case management services, oral cancer screening,
oral health education and legal advice. This years event will have a special focus
on engaging young people.
They will take place at: Martin Pollack Project, Inc., 3701 Eastern Ave. 12-6
p.m.; St. Matthews UMC, 416 E. 23rd St. 12-6 p.m.; Payne Memorial AME, 1714

GLCCB to hold town hall meetings on Pride
Kelly Neel, executive director of the Gay & Lesbian Community Center
of Baltimore, announced following the conclusion of the Baltimore Pride
celebrations on June 14-15, the organization will seek input from the community
in an eort to improve the annual event in future years.
Organizing Baltimore Pride is an around-the-year undertaking, explained
Neel in a statement. In an eort to engage and inform the Baltimore LGBT
community, The GLCCB and its Baltimore Pride committee will host a series of
Pride town hall meetings in July to wrap up this years event, recruit members for
next years Pride organizing committee and discuss improvements for Baltimore
Pride 2015. Dates and locations for our Pride Town Hall meetings are being
nalized.
After being situated in Mount Vernon for the Saturday block party and Druid
Hill Park for the Sunday festival, the GLCCB, which has operated Pride for more
than 35 years, changed venues this year. Both days events took place in the
Mount Royal area, several blocks north of the previous location and attempted
to control drinking with the establishment of two beer gardens.

Anti-gay laws have public health impact: study
NEW YORK Recent anti-homosexuality laws dont just violate human rightsthey
might worsen the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a Johns Hopkins University epidemiologist warns
in a PLOS Medicine essay published this week, Newsweek and other news outlets report.
While many countries and communities are expanding civil rights to the LGBT
community, such as marriage equality, some nations including Nigeria, Uganda, Russia
and India are criminalizing homosexuality or intensifying present anti-gay statutes. More
nations are poised to follow, putting public health initiatives at risk, Dr. Chris Beyrer writes
in Pushback: The Current Wave of Anti-Homosexuality Laws and Impacts on Health.
These laws and policies make it much more di cult to provide HIV services particularly
gay and bisexual men who have sex with men, who really need these services, Beyrer told
Newsweek. It can denitely lead to a worsening of the HIV epidemic in these countries.
For example in Nigeria, where homosexuality has long been illegal, the new Same
Sex Prohibition Act limits free speech and assembly. Advocates say this might push the
LGBT community and its allies deeper underground, meaning these persons wont seek
HIV-prevention or -treatment services. The law, which President Goodluck Jonathan
signed on January 13, has the potential to be especially damaging to the country that
now reels from the second largest HIV epidemic in the world, Beyrer writes.
In Russia, a 2013 law banning homosexual propaganda has also thwarted prevention
eorts there. An HIV testing and counseling clinic in Moscow, with which Beyer
collaborated, closed this past fall because clients and clinicians felt unsafe, he says.
European group works to de-classify gay disorders
LONDON A European group campaigning for the revision of the International
Classication of Diseases has called for the removal of sexual orientation-related disorders
from thehealth care classication system, the International Business Times reports.
According to the report, the move will improve health care in the LGBT community.
The World Health organization iscurrently revising the 10th edition of the ICD for the
new edition due in 2017.
Susan D. Cochran, a professor at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and a member
of the group, said the recommendation, if adopted, resolves a human rights issue.
Legal group launches anti-conversion campaign
SAN FRANCISCO An LGBT legal advocacy group hopes to bring an end to gay
conversion therapy in the U.S. within ve years, LGBTQ Nation reports.
The National Center for Lesbian Rights this week announced the launch of Born
Perfect: the Campaign to End Conversion Therapy, a campaign that will focus on raising
public awareness on how this type of therapy harms LGBT youth, the article said.
The campaign comes just weeks after the Republican Party in Texas endorsed the
practice as a means to cure homosexuality. Legislation banning the practice has been
approved in California and New Jersey but legal challenges followed.
The Center says its working with legislators and LGBT leaders in more than a dozen
states to help bring similar legislation to the rest of the country.
New LGBT Health Center
opens in Harlem
NEW YORK New Yorks Health and Hospitals Corporations Metropolitan
Hospital Center in East Harlem this month opened a new LGBT Health Center
that aims to better serve and remove barriers to care for LGBT New Yorkers,
EDGE Boston and other media outlets report.
The Comprehensive LGBT Health Center will provide specialized and
comprehensive primary, preventive and specialty care by health care
professionals trained to manage the needs of LGBT patients, the report said.
So far I could say that the patients coming here have found the environment
to be welcoming and nurturing. We at Metropolitan have gone through an
intensive cultural competence training over the past year, and are showing great
sensitivity to the needs of LGBT patients, Dr. Nadia Duvilaire, who oversees
patients in the Comprehensive LGBT Health Center, was quoted as having said
by EDGE Boston.
Several studies have shown that not being out to health care providers can
negatively impact health.

Great tips to get your
backside noticed
Though we know theres nothing more
attering for a bathing suit than like a at
stomach or a core thats ripped for the
gods, theres an epidemic going around
called noassatall (no-ass-at-all).
Lets face it, the gay martini look is
never in. Im not saying you have to jump
immediately to big booty Judy, but a
little round perky backside can be a great
commodity.
Some of us were blest with good genes
in this department. But for the rest of us,
here are some tricks of the trade to make
sure guys dont forget me as I walk away.
Squats are one of my favorite exercises
and are a butt blaster like no other. They
also burn a ton of calories. If youre new
to the squatting game, start with body
weight squats, then progress to weighted
and single-legged squats. The key to
seeing progress from these exercises, as
with all exercise, is committing to proper
form. Incorrectly performed squats can
lead to injury and lack of benet.
To do one correctly, keep your
heels at on the oor, knees behind
the vertical plane of the toes, back
straight and head looking up. Think of
pushing your butt backwards more than
dropping down and your body will fall
into place. Remember not to sacrice
weight for form. As I learned back in gay
trainer school, if the form is good, then
the booty will come.
My favorite bum enhancer is the TRX
single leg pistol squat. To do it, face
the TRX band (those suspension training
handle mechanisms all gyms have) and
hold onto both handles. Take a few steps
back so the TRX is taut, then shift your
weight to one leg. Straighten out the leg
so that its in the air and bend at the knee
and hip of the leg thats on the ground.
Form a 90-degree angle at both joints.
Push through the heel to return to the
starting position. Thats one rep. Try three
sets of eight to 12 reps each. You can also
use a pole or wall for support if you dont
have a TRX band.
Another great one to try is the dead
lift, a great lower body exercise that
utilizes lots of muscles, including the butt.
Its just like dropping it low to the oor
in the club, just while holding weights. To
do one, simply stand with weights in hand
and squat to the oor, low enough that
the weights grouch the ground. A good
alternate version is the Romanian dead
lift, where you hinge with the hips instead
of the knees, which puts more stress on
the rear leg muscles.
To do my favorite, the single leg
Romanian dead lift, start by standing
and shifting your weight to one leg. Once
stable, hinge forward at you hips while
keeping your standing leg slightly bent
and straightening out your back leg to
form a straight line with your back. Bend
to 90 degrees or as low as you can go
under control, then return to standing.
Repeat this for three sets of eight-12 reps
on each leg.
With beach season here and jean
season near, its always a good time to
spend a little extra time on your back
side. Incorporate these exercises into
your normal lower body routine three
times a week and youll be turning heads
for all the right reasons.

Before air travelers sported fashion-
able multi-colored, noise-cancelling
headphones, ight attendants would of-
fer passengers a tiny handful of plastic-
wrapped ear-buds and coo sweetly, You
may take them with you, as if they were
your new priceless Bose-buds.
You had to face-plant yourself in your
seatmates lap and plug them into some
unreachably intimate place behind their
knee. They never worked. Thus, over
years of air travel I have watched many
movies without sound and have had to
make up my own storylines. Snakes on
a Plane is an allegory about Adam and
Eve, right?
I live with Sporty Spice, so Im also a
big fan of sports mutability. While watch-
ing Wimbledon, unless I want to share
a pova, I mute the semi-porn shrieking
and groaning during rallies, then un-
mute for Martina Navratilovas insight-
ful commentary. Though I always found
John Maddens Monday Night Football
commentary a helpful sleep aid, I am not
allowed to touch the mute button during
football games. Ive learned to disassoci-
ate through the Sunday NYT crossword
puzzle. The NFL Red Zone, crack for foot-
ball fans, is more compulsively seduc-
tive for excitement addicts, but I have
learned to resist.
For a week now, World Cup Soccer
coverage has been on, mostly muted, in
our house. Since we seem to have work
to do, we walk by, check the score, watch
for a few minutes, then go back to what-
ever. Next Cup, I want split screens of the
amazing footwork, so coverage doesnt
look like 22 tiny gures swarming back
and forth on a pool table. We could get a
better TV. I love the crowd reaction shots.
But perhaps because we have had it on
mute, or ESPN has, we had not heard the
ugly racist and homophobic slurs in what
they call The Beautiful Game. No doubt
the omni-present buzz of vuvuzelas of
South Africas World Cup had drowned it
out four years ago.
Of course, I knew the ugliness. For
years there have been drunken hooligans
rioting at soccer games. I assumed they
werent ghting over parking. In an East-
ern European game, a racist tossed a ba-
nana at the feet of Barcelonas Dani Alves.
But Alves picked it up, peeled it and with
cool, slow deance, ate it. At the World
Cup, Croatian and Russian fans have
been reported unfurling neo-Nazi ban-
ners. Mexican fans chanted puto during
Cameroon and Brazils kicks on their goal.
Puto a male variant of puta, Spanish
for prostitute, translates into fag, man-
whore or coward.
The racism and homophobia are not
new. The sexism that implies that its
still OK to yell puta is as old as machis-
mo. What is new is that it is not being
muted by Univision or conversation-
stiing excuses of you dont under-
stand our culture or free expression.
The accusation of political correctness
is not working. PC always translates as
shut-up. What is new is that FIFA has
an anti-racism task force and FARE is an
anti-discrimination group monitoring
abusive fan behavior at the World Cup.
Slowly, the made-up storyline that its all
in good fan fun is changing.
Time will tell if FIFAs zero-tolerance
stance on racism will also apply to ho-
mophobia. Actually changing fan behav-
ior would involve an examination of colo-
nialism and nationalism, and there go the
Adidas, Hundai and Coke sponsorships.
It also involves pumping up the volume
in a full-throated condemnation of the
dislocation of poor people for stadium
construction, the exploitation of workers,
the suppression of protest and the graft
and corruption in hosting huge sporting
events. Did someone just yell Putin?

Americas silence on LGBT
rights abuses in Saudi Arabia

Middle Eastern media recently reported

that the administrator of Saudi Arabias larg-
estonlinenetworkfor lesbians was harassed
and intimidated into closing up shop. The net-
work, which reportedly had more than 4,000
participants, was described by some as avice
ring, but appears to have been just a network-
ing site for consensual, same-sex relationships
among Saudi women.
This incident is just the latest reminder of
Saudi Arabias dismal record on LGBT rights,
a topic that was regretfully absent from Presi-
dent Obamas agenda during his recent trip to
the sexually stied kingdom.
The State DepartmentadvisesLGBT travel-
ers that consensual intercourse between same-
sex individuals is criminalized in Saudi Arabia
and that potential penalties include nes, jail
time or death. The department alsonotesthe
possibility of ogging anddocumentedthat in
2012 the regimes strident religious police de-
clared that LGBT individuals would be banned
from public schools or universities.
Our research has found that the Kingdoms
o cial curriculum continues to indoctrinate
the next generation against LGBT rights.
High school textbooks currently in use sug-
gest that the most important debate about
gay people is how best to murder them. When
the State Department recentlydiscovered as
muchfrom a taxpayer-funded study, it unfor-
tunately chose to withhold its results.
Authorities in the region like to paint homo-
sexuality as a foreign imposition. Saudi Ara-
bias neighbor Kuwait made headlines recent-
ly for saying that all six monarchies in the Gulf
would explore using intrusive medical test-
ingto make it harder for LGBT individuals to
visit the region. And yet, ironically, because the
Gulf monarchies have such strict laws against
the mixing of men and women, many believe
that daily life in some waysencouragessocial
and sexual relationships between same-sex
partners.
Even before the recent dismantling of the
Kingdoms online lesbian network, more than
40 gay and transgender individuals were re-
ported arrested in the Saudi city of Jeddah
since President Obamas visit in late March.
And when the president arrived in Saudi
Arabia for his meeting with the king, that
morning a widely republished Friday sermon
at the Grand Mosque in Mecca specically
singled out the LGBT community for condem-
nation.
Imam Salah bin Humeids March 28 ser-
mon at the Grand Mosquelashed outat ho-
mosexuality as an a iction that seeks to strip
man of his humanity and inevitably darkens
and covers the soul. He also claimed that ho-
mosexuality violates the sanctity of Allah, kills
chastity, and slaughters virtue. Hedescribed
organizations and legislation accepting this
lifestyle as frightening and terrifying, insisting
that being gay is at odds with common sense
and normal souls.
Islamic scholarsdebatewhether or not the
Quran explicitly prohibits men having sex with
men, but Bin Humeid clearly chose to empha-
size the most homophobic possible theologi-
cal view. He also made claims about contem-
porary society that were both oensive and
factually erroneous. For instance, Bin Humeid
claimedthat homosexuality is outlawed by all
religions (its not). In addition, hearguedthat
68 percent of all LGBT people suer from
public health maladies as a result of their be-
havior, including HIV/AIDS, herpes, hepatitis,
gay bowel syndrome, and feelings of inferior-
ity that could lead to homicide or suicide. He
even declared that because homosexuality
makes human beings lower than a beast,
public health organizations should focus on
preventing the crimes of gays and lesbians,
not striving to address public health threats to
the LGBT community.
This bigoted sermon was not delivered at
any old house of worship it was given by
a longtime regime gure and adviser to the
king from the pulpit of the Grand Mosque in
Mecca, where the Saudi regime appointsthe
imams.
It is alsoreportedthat the Ministry of Islamic
Aairs regularly vets sermons before they are
delivered in important Saudi mosques.
The Obama administration broke new
ground in 2011 byrecognizingthat gay rights
are human rights. However, senior adminis-
tration o cials havecededthat the president
did not raise human rights issues of any kind
during his meeting in March with the king. And
there apparently has been no high-level, pub-
lic critique of Saudi Arabias intolerance toward
gays since then from either the embassy in Ri-
yadh or the executive branch.
America is not alone in downplaying its
concerns about Saudi Arabias systematic
human rights abuses, including against the
LGBT community. On the same day as Presi-
dent Obamas visit and Bin Humeids sermon,
retired heads of state from Germany, Austra-
lia, Japan, Malaysia and Brazil wereguests of
honorat the Saudi Kings center for religious
tolerance based in Vienna. Apparently none
of them raised public concerns about this re-
ligious intolerance.
But as Saudi Arabias superpower patron,
America has a special responsibility to help the
royal family do better. As Martin Luther King Jr.
famously said, injustice anywhere is a threat
to justice everywhere. So, when a U.S. ally
broadcasts state-sponsored hate on the day
our president comes to visit, it deserves more
than turning a blind eye.
Campaigns ignoring problems
from California to Iraq
There are days listening to the morning
news when you wonder whether the world is
going mad or you are.
This mornings news could have either sent
me into a serious depression or because of
sensory overload just had me tune out to-
tally. In the rst 15 minutes, I was informed
that Iraq is falling apart; Afghanistan is a lost
cause; the worst drought ever in California
has turned it into a tinderbox and will raise
food prices across the nation; thousands of
children who crossed the border from Mex-
ico are being warehoused in detention cen-
ters; Putin is sending troops to the Ukrainian
border; and Israel hit nine targets in Syria. To
make matters worse, Dick Cheney was being
interviewed on what we should do about all
this. Seriously, Dick Cheney, the man most re-
sponsible for the longest wars in our history
based on the false information he peddled to
Congress and the world?
Next on my morning agenda was check-
ing emails to nd the daily deluge of political
candidates and parties asking for money. It
would appear that when one gives a dona-
tion to anyone even years ago, every person
under the sun thinks you would care about
their election or cause. Candidates running
for commissioner in Los Angeles to some-
one running for mayor of Timbuktu now
have my email address and think a contri-
bution to their campaign is in the o ng.
They no longer even bother to tell me what
they stand for or what the issues are in the
places in which they are running. They think
because I am gay or once gave to EMILYs
List or some conservation cause that if they
mention something having to do with those
issues I will automatically send money. They
brag about how important they are to the
world, suggest that they are either up in the
polls and need to stay there; or are down
in the polls and need money to get on TV.
That alone could be considered a reason to
not give as some poor unsuspecting person
in their District will then be forced to watch
another annoying negative commercial that
I helped pay for.
Not one of those fundraising emails men-
tions anything reported on the news. No
one told me what their plans were to ght
the rising food costs caused by the Califor-
nia drought. They didnt explain their plans
for dealing with the children in the detention
centers in a humanitarian way or what they
would do or even say about the travesty that
is now Iraq and Syria. They seem to think if
they tell me Rosie ODonnell or some other
gay or lesbian icon supports them, that that s
enough to get me to send money. Lately, a lot
of Democrats believe quoting Rachel Maddow
will make a dierence.
In the race for campaign money we have
accepted the dumbing down of political dis-
course. It seems we have forgotten how to talk
to voters about the issues of war and peace
and how we as a nation can positively impact
the world. Not one email request for campaign
contributions this year has talked about those
issues. It seems that those writing campaign
fundraising emails today think everyone reads
People magazine and the more famous the
name mentioned in the request for money
the bigger the response. I guess that must be
working as they keep doing it. Then the subject
line has to be more outrageous each day to try
to get people to open the email before they hit
the delete button.
In many ways our politics is topsy-turvy
as well as mad. Here in the very progressive
District of Columbia we have a Democratic
chair of our Council who believes its OK to
dramatically change tax policy without hold-
ing public hearings. He can do that because
he isnt being challenged in his election so he
doesnt have to send out fundraising emails.
He has gotten the support of all the main can-
didates running for mayor from every party
to go along with this change on a budget that
would make most Republicans in the Con-
gress proud. Instead of putting more money
into aordable housing or helping the home-
less we are returning money to the wealthy
and ensuring that millionaires can pass on up
to $5 million of their money to heirs with no
local inheritance taxes.
Despite all of that, those of us who care, and
there are many, will continue to work on the
causes we believe in and support the candi-
dates we think can actually make a dierence.
But it does seem harder to do that each year.

Legacy of brutal murders
lives on as activists confront
voter suppression
Some things in life are unforgettable.
Ill never forget, when I was 11 and living in
Southern, N.J., watching a CBS documentary
called The Search in Mississippi with my par-
ents in 1964. On the show, Walter Cronkite
reported on the search for three volunteers
with the Freedom Summer Project, a cam-
paign to register African-American voters in
Mississippi, who had disappeared. One of the
volunteers, James Chaney, 21,was black and
from Mississippi. The other two volunteers
Andrew Goodman, 20, and Michael Schw-
erner, 24, were white New Yorkers. They
were among the hundreds of volunteers,
black and white, whod risked their lives to go
to Mississippi that summer to non-violently
ght for the right to vote for African Ameri-
cans. Theyve probably been murdered, my
Dad said, choking up, about the volunteers
whod been missing.
Unfortunately, my Dad was right. They
were killed by the Ku Klux Klan in Philadel-
phia, Miss. on June 21, the rst day of Free-
dom Summer. Forty-four days after they dis-
appeared, their remains were found.
This is a wonderful town, Goodman
wrote on a postcard he mailed to his parents
on the day he was murdered, Our reception
was very good.
This summer is the 50th anniversary of
Freedom Summer. Like many such anniver-
saries, its bittersweet.
In 1964, voter suppression eorts tar-
geting African Americans were among the
highest in the country. In 1962, fewer than 7
percent of black people in Mississippi were
registered to vote and there had been 539
lynchings of African Americans from 1882 to
1964. Over a 10-week period that summer,
volunteers black, white, Jewish and Chris-
tian put their bodies on the line. They were
beaten and put in jail. The amount of fear and
intimidation that they endured is impossible
to adequately convey or imagine.
The beatings and murders of African
Americans hadnt received much publicity.
The bodies of eight other black men were
found with the remains of Chaney, Good-
man and Schwerner. But, because Goodman
and Schwerner were white, their murders
enraged the nation and were covered widely
in the media. President Lyndon Johnson
and Congress used this outrage to pass the
Civil Rights Act on July 2, 1964. Freedom Sum-
mer volunteers established more than 40
Freedom Schools. The schools taught math,
reading, black history and other subjects to
more than 3,000 African-American students
in Mississippi. In 1965, the Voting Rights Act
was passed. These successes are a wonderful
vindication of the Freedom Summer Project
a non-violent, social justice movement. If
only these victories had not come with unjust
bloodshed and loss of human lives.
More important is that so much more
needs to be done before justice will be
achieved. Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court
struck down a key provision of the Voting
Rights Act. After that, immediately a num-
ber of states moved to implement laws
that would essentially reduce voter turnout
among minority groups, wrote David Good-
man, Andrew Goodmans brother, in a com-
mentary for fdlreporter.com.
Today, half a century on from Freedom
Summer, people worldwide, including mem-
bers of the LGBT community, are still ghting
for equality and justice. In the ght for same-
sex marriage, the right to vote is vital.
As a young, black, queer woman who di-
rectly benets from the legacy of Freedom
Summer, I commit to working towards a jus-
tice for all people that is yet to be realized,
Human Rights Campaign Youth and Campus
Outreach Assistant Samantha Master, wrote
on the HRC website.
This summer, the LGBT community has
been marking the Freedom Summer 50th
anniversary. HRC is organizing a Moral Free-
dom Summer voter registration campaign.
This week (June 23-29), Master and other
LGBT leaders, have been featured at the Mis-
sissippi Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary
conference in Jackson, Miss.
In 1964, the young women and men of
Freedom Summer had the courage to go to
the lions den and try to scrub the lions teeth,
Maya Angelou said.
The struggle for justice continues. I hope
we have the courage to go to the lions den.
Ivenever feltprouder
than when my moms
were married

The rst time anyone asked me if I was
disadvantaged to be raised by lesbian
moms was in the rst grade. A friend from
my class asked what my mom and dad did
for a living, and when I told him I had two
moms, he told me that Iwasntnormal, that
we were dierent.
Growing up, friends would ask questions
like, who cooks? or, who works? trying to
t our puzzle piece where we justcouldnt.
To me, my family was dierent because I
had three parents; a step mom and two
other moms; atwin and two step brothers;
the fact that my parents were gay never
made me think of them as dierent, until
those outside my family made a point of it.
Itwasntuntil my freshman year in high
school that I nally saw how my family was
dierent.
Elliott and I woke up early on Jan. 11, 2010,
and put on our only suits. We shu ed into
the back of Kris and Sandys SUV and the
four of us drove across the Bay Bridge to
a Victorian home in San Francisco. There,
we met with Chad Gri n, president of the
American Foundation for Equal Rights, Paul
Katami, and Je Zarrillo (who with my moms
would be the plaintis in the Proposition 8
case). The ve of them stepped outside to
meet the press, and it was Je who said,
Were all Americans who simply want to get
married like everybody else.
In minutes, Elliott and I were on our way
to the Federal District Courthouse. We
were led through the back while our moms
and a battalion of lawyers weaved their way
between picket lines. It seemed that in no
time Judge Walker was banging his gavel
and the trialbegan.
One of our lawyers, David Boies, called
Je and then Paul. The opposing lawyer,
Charles Cooper, cross-examined Paul, and
then, Ted Olson, our other lawyer, asked
Kris to take the stand.
After a few questions, Ted asked Kris
what it felt like to be discriminated against.
It was the rst time I had ever heard any of
my moms describe what it was like to face
prejudice. She told Ted about growing up
in the Central Valley of California and hid-
ing who she was. She told him how she was
teased and mocked as she grew up and
how that blanket of constant hate had low-
ered the quality of her life. She also said she
had never allowed herself to be truly happy
and how she didnt want any kid to know
what that felt like.
Looking around as Kris joined us again
on the bench, I could see my brother, San-
dy, and our friends in tears.
I had nally found my answer: Families
like mine are no dierent than anyone
elses. We share the same love. Were only
dierent in that we felt the brunt of living
under discriminatory laws.
When a family like mine is denied equal
protection under the law, when society
tells us that because you are a minority,
you dont get the rights of the majority, it
hurts. It validates hate against that minor-
ity. It teaches kids in states with same-sex
marriage bans that your familyisntworthy
of protection.
Perry v. Hollingsworth was appealed
again and again until it reached the Su-
preme Court. My rst trip to D.C. was much
like that drive to San Francisco three years
earlier. Elliott and I woke up early to stand
in line outside the courthouse. We walked
behind our parents to sit behind Ted Olson
and David Boies. In the midst of Charles Coo-
pers oral argument, Justice Kennedy asked,
Forty thousand children in California that
live with same-sex parents, and they want
their parents to have full recognition and full
status. The voice of those children is impor-
tant in this case, dont you think? Cooper re-
sponded saying there was noevidence that
children, my brothers and I, would benet
from Kris and Sandy being married.
Today the same question is being asked
in court cases across the country that chal-
lenge state bans on marriage equality and
likePerry v. Hollingsworthhave the poten-
tial to bring the battle of universal marriage
equality to the Supreme Court.
Four months after the Supreme Court
oral arguments, the court lifted the ban on
same-sex marriages in California and I got
to know exactly what that benet is. Take it
from a son Ivenever feltprouder or more
patriotic than when my moms were legally
married one year ago on June 28. Every son
and daughter in every state should have
the right to feel that way.

Midtown Men singer says eras
music had special qualities

If you loved the smash Broadway
musical Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie
Valli and the Four Seasons, youll probably
also love the Midtown Men, a throwback
group comprised of the four original
Jersey Boys stars who now tour with
their own 60s revue.
The group, in Washington this
weekend for two shows with the National
Symphony Orchestra, has played more
than 1,000 shows together counting their
2005-2008 stint on the Great White Way.
Now with legal woes behind them
there was a back-and-forth in 2010
between Jersey Boys producers and the
Men that was eventually settled out of
court the four actor/singers, Christian
Ho, Daniel Reichard, J. Robert Spencer
and Michael Longoria have earned
raves all over the country for their high-
energy show, which the New York Times
said has the air of the Rat Pack, Motown
and a nightclub act all rolled into one.
It started backstage during Jersey
Boys. Longoria, 33, who originated the
role of Joe Pesci while often playing Valli in
matinees before taking over the role fully
for the last year-and-a-half he was in it,
says the cast would often play other early
60s music backstage on show nights to
help them get in the mood.
We did it to just kind of feel the world
of the 60s and the world Frankie Valli
lived in, Longoria, who moved to New
York in 1999 when he was 17 to go to
New York University, says. Wed play the
Mamas and the Papas, the Beatles, the
Beach Boys, and before you knew it, we
all started singing along together.
After a hit debut singing at Katie
Courics 50th birthday party in 2007,
invitations started pouring in.
When the guys realized it was more than
just a one-o, they started establishing
more repertoire and eventually, after
three years of Jersey Boys, they went
their separate ways for about a year, but
then reunited and hired an agent and
within a month, had a years worth of gigs
booked as the Midtown Men. That was
four years ago.
So is this just Boomer nostalgia in high
gear or is it more than that?
Longoria, who croons with ease in a
buttery falsetto on songs like Breaking Up
is Hard to Do, Sherry, Happy Together
and many more (the group rotates its set
list regularly), says the songs have lasted
because of the uncommonly strong
songwriting.
It was very story driven and has a lot
to do with everyday peoples problems,
he says. Its guys wearing their hearts
on their sleeves. They might be telling
you theyre leaving, but its done in a very
human way. A lot of times in music today,
there are so many bells and whistles,
the words and melody get lost. But back
then, thats all they had, so they just put it
on the table and because of that human
element and that human experience, its
very easy to relate to for an audience.
Longoria also says the style of much
of the singing is well suited to his four-
octave range.
They wrote a lot for guy singers and
they dont really do that much anymore.
He says the vocal eorts arent
particularly taxing. He likens it to going
to the gym and staying in shape with his
voice.
Some of his favorites to sing are Be My
Baby by Ronnie Spector and Wouldnt it
Be Nice by the Beach Boys. Four Seasons
hits like Sherry and Big Girls Dont Cry
are staples of the show.
Longoria says he met Valli many times
during the Jersey Boys run and says the
legendary singer, now 80, was always
very supportive and even gave Longoria
his cell phone number.
I think he saw himself in me a little bit,
Longoria says. He was always very nice
and kind about giving me advice and stu
like that.
After graduating from NYU, Longoria
worked about six months at the famed
Ellens Stardust Diner in Times Square
before being cast in Hairspray with
Harvey Fierstein, a show he was with for
two years before moving ironically just
across the street to Jersey Boys.
It was nice because I still got to see
my Hairspray friends everyday, he says.
Wed ash each other from the dressing
room windows. Girls would show their
boobs. Guys would show their asses. If
you were lucky, youd see a dick. It was a
fun, young time. Very exciting.
Longoria came out at age 15 at the
Los Angeles County High School for the
Arts and says he cant imagine living any
other way. His boyfriend of ve years, a
Broadway producer he declines to name,
sometimes travels with him.
So is Broadway as gay as everybody
tends to think it is?
Longoria says it is, though, there are
lots of annoying straight guys there, too.
Hairspray, he says, was so gay, initially
getting cast in the much-straighter Jersey
Boys provided a tinge of culture shock.
On Hairspray, I never really thought
about it, he says. It was never like, Oh,
theres all these queens back here, you
know what I mean? Harvey Fierstein
was just like this big, gay fairy godmother
and it just seemed natural. But then being
in Jersey Boys, it was a much dierent
experience because I was trying to bring
all this machismo to the role and also so
many involved were straight, married,
had girlfriends. I was the one bringing
guys to meet the cast. It was normal and
accepting, but it did feel a little dierent.
That specic show just had a lot of straight
guys in it.
Often the Midtown Men perform
with a seven-piece rock band, but they
eventually had orchestrations charted of
their music and shows like this weekends
with the NSO Pops became possible.
The last few times Longoria has been in
Washington, its been cold, so he says hes
looking forward to being here in warmer
weather. If youre out this weekend,
theres a chance you could see him at JR.s
or Cobalt. He says he loves checking out
the local bar scene, seeing what the drag
shows are like and giving out Midtown
Men tickets.
Ive made some really cool friends in
really random places you wouldnt even
think would have a gay bar, he says.

How long have you been out and who
was the hardest person to tell?
I came out to friends when I was 15 but
Ive been obviously gay probably since I
was 5. I didnt really come out to my mom,
she found out; but she denitely took it
the hardest. I was raised Southern Baptist.
It was a big struggle for her to nd where
acceptance t in her faith, but I think were
closer now than weve ever been before.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Thats hard because there are so many.
But maybe Ellen DeGeneres because
she had the breasticles to come out on
television back when it wasnt cool to be
gay and she kept a sense of humor about
it, too. Oh, and she has a banging wife.
Whats Washingtons best nightspot,

past or present?
Gay Bash party at Black Cat, hands down. I
love the dark industrial, goth drag and the DJ
makes me dance like I danced when I was 22.
Describe your dream wedding.

I had my dream wedding last October.
Very DIY. Our friends and family all kicked
in to make it the perfect day. It was bicycle
themed and so many people from the wee
corners of the world came together that
day. We had our ceremony and reception
in Greenville, S.C. Bicycled from San Diego
to L.A. and back for our honeymoon. And
then had our civil ceremony in D.C.
What non-LGBT issue are you most

passionate about?
Probably recycling and reusing. I cant
stand throwing things away that can
be reused. I have a closet full of empty
boxes. My wife tolerates it because she
agrees, but I take it a little to the extreme.
What historical outcome would you
change?
I wish that instead of becoming extinct,
dinosaurs had just become miniature so
that we could have them as house pets.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
In grad school, me and ve other girls in
our cohort choreographed and performed
N Syncs Bye Bye Bye in drag for an HIV
hospice benet. I was the only LGBTQ
member. We spent more time practicing
our routine than we spent on any other
project in grad school. Its still on YouTube,
search for NSTYNC at the Palace.
On what do you insist?

A sense of humor. We take ourselves
too seriously and it causes stress which
takes years o our lives and contributes
to the collective bad mood. I always
want to laugh, even if its a stupid joke.
Especially if its a stupid joke!
What was your last Facebook post or
Tweet?
I shared The Whittington Family:
Rylands Story YouTube video about a
young transgender child whose parents
recognized, accepted and supported his
transition at the age of 5.
If your life were a book, what would

the title be?
It would be a pop-up book and it
would be called The Larger than Life
Adventures of Magic Mike.
If science discovered a way to change

sexual orientation, what would you do?
If it was a pill and it was time released, Id slip it
to bigots randomly to make them gay for a day.
What do you believe in beyond the

physical world?
I dont really. I dont have any evidence to
base a belief on. I think this life is good enough
to live for and this world is good enough to
strive to make better. This planet is so majestic.
My motorcycle trip across the U.S. was
probably the closest Ive ever felt to nirvana.
Whats your advice for LGBT
movement leaders?
Dont let the T in LGBT be a tag-
along. If youre going to speak for the
community, speak for all of us.
What would you walk across hot coals
for?
My wife, my dog, my nieces and nephews
and a lifetime supply of good beer.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?

The U-Haul. But its true.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I cant
wait to see it on Broadway!
Whats the most overrated social custom?
Not questioning authority. I think we are
taught from the time we start exploring
our world that someone always knows
better than we do and even if they dont, we
shouldnt challenge the people who are in
control. But seriously, if we all followed that
rule, change would never happen.
What trophy or prize do you most

covet?
Winner of the pie-eating contest during
the Gay Games. Thats a real thing right?
What do you wish youd known at 18?

That marriage equality would be a
reality in my lifetime. I spent a lot of time
angry at the world because I thought it
wouldnt change, but it was changing
all along. I was just stuck in a really
stubborn part of the country.
Why Washington?
Marriage equality, bike lanes, cultural
diversity and Southern charm. Oh, and Obama!

Today is National HIV Testing Day and one local person passionate for
the cause is Michel Mike McVicker, a linkage specialist at AIDS Healthcare
Foundations Blair Underwood Clinic in Washington.
McVicker is an early intervention specialist working with new-to-care and
returning-to-care clients as she walks them through the system, answering
their questions and concerns and making sure they understand what the
Foundation calls their responsibilities to their health care.
HIV has come such a long way and it can be a manageable condition with the
right medicine, the 37-year-old Greenville, S.C., native says. Thats why getting
people the medicine they need to live is the central focus of AHF. Im so proud
to be a part of an agency that is on the frontline of this issue all over the globe.
And Im proud to be part of the LGBTQ community who took up the ght against
HIV from the beginning and hasnt quit over the course of this 30-plus-year war.

Pride events continue in region all summer
Pride festivities continue in the region throughout the coming months.
Next up is this weekends Frederick Pride Festival Saturday from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
Frederick Pride will begin with an ecumenical Pride service at Grace United
Church of Christ (25 E. 2nd St., Frederick, Md.) at 11 a.m. At noon, the festival
begins at Carroll Creek Park (44 E. Patrick St., Frederick, Md.). There will be music,
games, a beer and wine garden, a pie-eating contest and an appearance by Miss
Gay Maryland America Alondra Sancheez.
Keynote speakers will be the Point Foundations Sharon Brackett and
Chris Lynch, a transgender student from Brunswick High School. Visit

A new event is planned for nearby West Virginia. The Eastern Panhandle
LGBTQ Pride in the Park is planned for Morgans Grove Park in Shepherdstown,
W.Va., on July 12. Details available on the Facebook page of the Eastern Panhandle

The Chesapeake Pride Festival set for Aug. 2 from noon-6 p.m. at Mayo
Beach Park (4150 Honeysuckle Dr., Mayo, Md.) in Anne Arundel County. More

Also on Aug. 2, the Delaware Pride Festival will be in front of Legislative
Hall in Dover, Del., from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It will be hosted by Miss Reading Pride
Celebration 2013 Gracie Freebush and there will be a performance by Miss
Delaware Pride 2013 Ivy Profen. More details will be released closer to the event

Ross plays region twice this weekend
Motown legend Diana Ross performs a sold-out show at Modell Performing
Arts Center at the Lyric (140 W. Mt Royal Ave., Baltimore) Saturday at 8 p.m. and
at Wolf Trap (1645 Trap Rd., Vienna, Va.) on Sunday at 8 p.m.
Ross debuted with the all girl-group the Supremes in the 1960s. Their hit
songs included Baby Love, You Cant Hurry Love and Stop! In the Name of
Love. Ross left the Supremes and went on to pursue a solo career. Her songs
Im Coming Out and Aint No Mountain High Enough became chart-topping
hits. Rosss daughter Rhonda Ross will also make an appearance at Wolf Trap.
Though billed as the In the Name of Love Tour 2014, Rosss set list for her June
shows was almost identical to the set list shes toured with the last ve years.

Olney, Md.-based company
plans diverse stage repertoire

A year and a half after taking the helm as
artistic director of the Olney Theatre Center,
Jason Loewith is still guring out his audience.
We rely on a particular audience to keep
us going and those are the folks who love
Agatha Christies Mousetrap, he says. But
all of Montgomery County and including
the area around Olney have become
increasingly vibrant and younger. We want
to keep the Christie crowd, but Ive been
nding that theres a lot more we can do.
For Olneys summer musical, Loewith has
selected and staged Avenue Q, the funny
2004 Tony Award-winning musical send up
of Sesame Street. But unlike with the kids
show, these Muppet-like puppets (manned
by seen actors) and humans sing side-by-
side about more grownup stu including
prolonged adolescence (I Wish I Could Go
Back to College), porn (The Internet Is for
Porn), political correctness (Everyones
a Little Bit Racist), being in the closet (My
Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada), and their
own inadequacies ( It Sucks to be Me).
The show is such a machine, says
Loewith, who is gay. You just need to nd
the right funny people. Get out of the way
and not fuck it up.
For his production hes assembled a cast
that includes Sam Ludwig, Rachel Zampelli,
and the reliably excellent Stephen Gregory
Smith. Hes tapped popular out actor Bobby
Smith for associate director/choreography,
and the talented Christopher Youstra for
musical director and onstage accompanist.
But not everything that does well in New York
is an automatic hit on the leafy campus of Olney
Theatre. A directors point of view is important.
My approach is to not let the heart
imbedded in the show get lost in its snarky
humor and satire. In the suburbs, a play
must have a way into the heart as well as
the mind. Avenue Q has that, says Loewith
who lives with his partner on Capitol Hill.
Its about why you need to love people.
Ambition and success mean nothing if you
cant share it with those you love. And thats
a path that I follow and believe in.
When Loewith lived in New York, he
worked at the Classic Stage Company just
two blocks from the Vineyard Theatre
where Avenue Q was created.
It really spoke to me at that moment. Im
the same generation as its creators (author
Je Whitty and composers-lyricists Robert
Lopez and Je Marx.).Ten years ago I was 35
and, like the characters in Avenue Q, was still
trying to gure out my place in the world. I
also happen to be very snarky myself, though
not as snarky as some in show biz.
He believes its the perfect follow-up to last
summers A Chorus Line, another smart with
heart, which won the Helen Hayes Award for
Outstanding Resident Musical, Olneys rst
such award since Lucky Sti won in 1990.
In September, Loewith plans to open
Olneys fall season opens with Colossal, a
new play that he expects to resonate with
LGBT theatergoers. Penned by Andrew
Hinderaker, Colossal is the story of Mike, a
disabled man who became paralyzed after
taking a bad hit for his co-team captain
and rst lover Marcus in a college football
game. Seated in his wheelchair, Mike (to
be played by Patrick Thornton, who is
disabled) repeatedly watches the video of
the bad hit. On stage, the hit is recreated by
actors through movement and dance.
Colossal is slated to be staged by Will
Davis, a transgender director. When I
hired Will he was a she. Now hes a he
and its upsetting my male-female ratio of
directors. But thats OK.
Loewith brings energy and innovation to
the job. He meets his challenges with a sense
of humor. And perhaps most importantly,
he holds the company to a high standard: I
dont care if were doing The Little Mermaid
(which Olney is mounting for the holidays),
well attack the project with artistic rigor and
that means working with the best directors,
designers and actors in town.
He cites Broadway director David
Esbjornson, best known for directing
Edward Albees The Goat, or Who is
Sylvia? on Broadway, as an inuence,
especially his mantra that art must lead.
That means if it takes another thousand
dollars to bring the right person to make the
cast work, you have to do it, Loewith says.
A theater will not stay alive by sending out
another appeal letter or making a cut in the
marketing budget. A theater survives by
putting excellent work on the stage.

New Tico has small plates
but big avors

There are so many Mexican/Latin-
styled restaurants in and around Logan
Circle, any new kids on the block need to
do something dierent to get noticed.
Tico (1926 14th St. N.W.) is a brand
new restaurant from renowned Boston-
based Chef Michael Schlow, who has
become one of Americas most respected
and inuential chefs, having mastered a
variety of global cuisines. Tico, however,
is pretty straightforward. Schlow wants
to simply serve excellent food in a fun
environment that his patrons can enjoy.
I remember rst hearing about the
wonders of Chef Schlow when I was
living in Boston years ago. It seemed
like everyone was talking about the
phenomenal dishes that this young chef
was preparing and delivering to the
patrons. I never got a chance to eat at
one of his restaurants when I was there,
but he was denitely on my radar. Hes
appeared on Top Chef Masters and the
James Beard Foundation named him best
chef in the Northeast. When the rumors
rst started about a Schlow restaurant
coming to D.C., I began searching for
all that could be found and eventually it
was revealed that Tico would be opening
in the new Louis on XIV. I could barely
contain my excitement. I could not wait
to see what Schlow was planning to
deliver.
Schlow brought with him his head chef
from Tico Boston, George Rodrigues, to help
open the D.C. location. Rodrigues began his
culinary career in Brazil and later spent time
in Chicago where he served as sous chef
to Chef Jose Garces at Mercat a la Planxa,
discovering there his love for Latin avors.
The build out at Tico creates a very
cool, open and laid-back space that oers
excellent people-watching opportunities.
No matter where youre sitting, you can
pretty much see from the kitchen to the
street outside the wide open folding
glass doors, which overlook 14th Street.
The space has a rich rustic feel even
though it was just created and none of
the walls, not even the weathered brick,
are original. As I gazed out the front of
the space while enjoying my food, I was
nearly transported to bustling, history-
lled Boylston Street in Boston.
The menu at Tico is inspired by Schlows
visits to Mexico, South America and Spain
and each dish reects these inuences in
a slightly dierent manner. The dishes at
Tico are meant to be simple and sexy, both
excellent descriptors of the small plates
served. We ordered several dishes each and
skipped Hibiscus margarits as we waited.
The rst dish to arrive was the exquisite
scallop ceviche. What seemed like a
simple dish at rst glance turned out
to be a multidimensional masterpiece.
The cold scallops balanced with the pico
and topped o with a creamy avocado
dressing all came together in perfect
harmony as they hit the tongue. The meal
was clearly o to a fantastic start.
The local crab tostadas were the next
to arrive and the saltiness of the tostada
and freshness of the local crab melded
together beautifully. Dish after dish
arrived and each provided a new taste of
Tico with a masterful balance of avors
and textures.
The chicarones with white mole powder
are not the pork rinds youre used to.
They were evenly prepared, crispy and
avorful throughout. The peas dish with
bacon was a creative savory take on one
of my least favorite vegetables. The sweet
corn dish was surprisingly one of my
favorite dishes of the evening as the rich
bacon and butter did not overwhelm the
light sweet kernels and the jalapeno slices
added just the right amount of heat.
The nal victory arrived at the table
disguised as mac and cheese, but was
much more. Serrano ham, manchego
cheese and crispy breadcrumbs
accompanied delicate noodles and all it
took was one forkful and I was in love.
Tico was everything I was hoping
for from the moment I heard it would
be opening. The night I went, the sta
provided excellent non-intrusive service
in a comfortable environment. Each dish,
whether it seemed simple or complex,
provided something unexpected. Each
had a well developed, balanced and
divine avor prole. Tico is yet another
standout in the 14th Street corridor of
restaurants and Im hoping that Schlow
soon brings another concept to D.C.

Novel is compelling story
of struggling youth
Youve planned for it, dreamed of it,
wished it would happen. You imagined
yourself with it and envied those who
had it: family, vacation, money, success, a
sibling, a pony. Whatever it was, its been
your most fervent desire since forever.
Yes, youve wanted it your whole life
but, as in the novel For Today I Am a
Boy by Kim Fu, you might not have fully
realized it.
Peter Haung should have inherited the
keys to the kingdom.
Hed been the answer to his parents
prayers: a long-awaited boy, given a
Cantonese middle name that meant
powerful king. He would be the son who
would not shame his father.
It was a role that Peter didnt want. Truth
was, he didnt know what he wanted.
All his life, he admired his beautiful
oldest sister, Adele. She was patient,
generous and agreeable, the sort of
person others took advantage of. Peter
wanted to be Adele, but he didnt want
the things she did to get by.
He loved steadfast Helen but she
seemed incapable of anything but study.
Constantly reminded that her destiny
was law school, she knew that she was
nonetheless a disappointment to her
parents. Books couldnt change her
gender, but they could get her out of Fort
Michel, Ontario.
Sassy, cute Bonnie was the little
sister to whom Peter was closest in age
and camaraderie. It was Bonnie who
participated in Peters schemes, Bonnie
whose hair Peter styled. They shared a
bed when they were young, and pretend-
games as they grew the latter of which
was a secret, lest they anger their father.
Father would be livid if he knew that
Peter wore his sisters clothes and make-
up. Their father never touched them in
anger or aection yet the feelings that
welled up in Peter would certainly have
made him furious.
Peter tried sports and dating girls.
He tried to get used to the thing that
extended from his groin, and he tried a
religious camp to x his longings. He
tried all his life to be a good son and
maybe that was the problem.
Heres a little warning for you: from the
rst sentence of the prologue, itll be hard
to resist For Today I Am a Boy.
Thats because this is an absolutely
gorgeously told story that author Kim
Fu hands us. But its so appealingly

almost surreal at times. We sometimes
cant decide whether hes thinking or
doing, and its di cult to predict what will
happen to him. As a literary device, the
guessing game thoroughly works. And the
ending is absolutely perfect.
This is a relatively short book that youll
want to make last. Its both moving and
sad, but hard to put down.

among options to consider

With nearly 50 percent of the U.S. pop-
ulation owning at least one dog or cat, its
no wonder many homeowners take their
pets into consideration when its time
to remodel. In fact, there are numerous
things homeowners can do to make their
homes more comfortable and functional
for their four-legged housemates. Some
of our top pet remodeling requests at
BOWA include:
Doggy Showers: Often located in a
family foyer or garage, tiled barrier-free
doggy showers are an increasingly popu-
lar option. Special designs with little or no
curb and a hand-held sprayer at a lower
level make easy work of rinsing o muddy
paws after a romp in the backyard or giv-
ing Rover a full bath. Many even opt to use
custom-painted tiles featuring their own
pets breed and other themed graphics.
Feeding Stations: Depending on your
needs and the allowable space, a feed-
ing station can get pretty elaborate. Con-
sider a custom shelf built into kitchen or
family foyer cabinetry, with cutouts for
bowls and a nearby storage area suitable
for large bags of food, treats, toys and
leashes. To take it a step further, we have
had clients install a water line and faucet
with an automatic water attachment as
their pets drink, the bowl is automatically
relled.
Hidden Litter Boxes: Many choose to
hide an unsightly litter box in some type
of enclosure, whether its a purchased
freestanding piece or a specially designed
area in custom cabinetry with a whimsi-
cal cat-shaped cutout entry. Family foyers
are a common location, but with a bit of
carpentry work, you may be able to pro-
vide Fluy access to the garage or anoth-
er out-of-the-way location.
Pet Doors: Since they rst entered
the market, pet doors have come a long
way. Now with styles that t into French
doors, panels that t in screen doors,
some that (believe it or not) accommo-
date pets up to 220 pounds, and infra-
red and magnetic key options, pet doors
are a great way to give your four-legged
family members access to the great
outdoors. Some people even choose to
create special doors inside the home al-
lowing access to a room even when the
people door is closed.
Sleeping Areas and Hideaways: Hu-
mans are not the only ones who enjoy
retiring to the peaceful sanctuary of their
bedroom so do pets. Consider creat-
ing a built-in bed or crate area in your
laundry room or family foyer where your
companion can curl up for an afternoon
nap or escape from the hustle and bustle
of company.
Reality TV: Give your pet their own ver-
sion of reality television in the form of
a window seat or low windows that give
them a view of whats going on outside.
Just like teenagers, pets can entertain
themselves for hours on end by just star-
ing at reality TV.
Most importantly, if you decide to stay
in your home during a remodeling proj-
ect, there are many things that can be
done to make the environment more
safe and comfortable for your pet. For
example, signs can be posted to make
sure certain doors remain closed and
caution is used when entering particular
rooms. Also, extra care should be taken
to ensure hazardous materials are picked
up from accessible construction areas to
protect curious pets.
