Who is eligible to apply? How do I apply?

First year ERE MA students will be invited to apply to participate in the practicum during their 2
nd
year. Applications will
be accepted from May 15, 2014 to June 15, 2014. Submission of a current CV, Spring 2014 academic transcript, and a
statement of purpose will be required.
When will applicants be notified of projects and placements? What is the acceptance rate? How do I enroll?
Client organizations sometimes do not know ahead of time what project needs they will have until closer to September.
We make an effort to gain their confirmation and commitment as early as possible in the summer and aim to notify
students of available projects and make placement offers by early August. At that time, students invited to a practicum
team have the option of proceeding with enrollment or declining. In the 2013-2014 academic year, 42 applications were
received and 24 students were placed in 6 teams. For the 2014-2015 academic year, we anticipate placing 20 students
in 5 practicum teams. Project availability is subject to change. Students who accept a placement are auto-enrolled into
the course by the Registrars Office after notification by our department. Students are encouraged to have an
alternative course selected for Fall 2014 in case a practicum placement is not offered.
Will I receive academic credit? When and how will I be graded?
Yes. 680.775 International Energy and Environmental Policy Practicum counts as a 4-credit course and will be listed on
transcripts for the Fall semester. Grades will not be posted until completion of the Practicum at the end of the Spring
semester. Please refer to the syllabus for 680.775 for information on grading and deliverables required.

What will be the timeline and commitment required?
Project timelines vary and depends on the needs of the client organization. Some teams have scopes of work and
timelines that are heavier in the beginning of the semester, others in the Spring, and others have work more spread out
equally throughout the academic year. Students should plan to commit to their teams and serve as consultants for the
duration of the academic year. All teams are required and should plan to meet per scheduled class times with Dr.
Haskett (more frequently in the Fall semester as teams get started), meet regularly with their faculty advisors, hold
planning sessions with fellow practicum team members, and with clients as needed.

Where will my practicum team meet? What space is available for meetings?
At the beginning of the year, each team is encouraged to figure out a 2 hour weekly time frame that all team members
are available to meet and notify Cristina Benitez, sbenite1@jhu.edu. A conference room will be reserved for your
teams meeting needs for the academic year for a 2-hour time frame of choice. For other ad-hoc meetings and space
needs, please refer to Instructions for Room Reservations & Conference Calls provided to all ERE Practicum Teams.
All requests for room reservations must be submitted at minimum 1 full business day in advance though last minute
requests are granted if feasible during ERE office hours (9:30am-5:30pm).
