RECAP: The Rainiers scored 3 runs over the final 4 innings, but couldn’t overcome and early deficit as Tacoma lost to El Paso 3-4 on
Friday night. DH Corey Hart (1x3, 2B, BB), 1B Justin Smoak (1x3, R, 2B, BB), 2B Nick Franklin (1x3, RBI, BB), 3B Gabriel Noriega
(1x4) and C Humberto Quintero (1x4) each recorded 1 of the 5 Rainiers hits in the game. Starter Matt Palmer (5.2,7,3,3,3,4,HR) recorded
his 5th loss of the season, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 5.2 innings. RH Chance Ruffin (1.0,1,1,1,1,0) allowed a run in the bottom of the
7th inning, while RH Stephen Kohlscheen (1.1,0,0,0,0,1) retired the final 4 batters in order to close out the game.

OF NOTE: RH Jordan Pries has allowed only 4 runs over his last 3 starts (1.83 ERA /4 ER, 19.2 IP). Since April 30, Pries is 4-4 with a
2.41 ERA (18 ER, 67.1 IP) in his last 10 starts. During this stretch he has limited opponents to a .225 average (55x244) with 21 walks and
52 strikeouts. Overall this season with Tacoma, Pries has tossed at least 6.0 innings in 9 of his 13 starts, while allowed 1 run or less 8
times. Since allowing a 1 earned run (2 R) in 0.1 innings in his season debut on May 31, RH Todd Coffey (2-0-2, 0.96) has allowed only 3
hits and struck out 10 in 9.0 scoreless innings. Since J une 1, INF Gabriel Noriega has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games, batting .328
(21x64) with 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 6 RBI, 2 walks and 1 stolen base.

SMOAK ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: 1B Justin Smoak began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on J une 18. In 8 rehab starts with
the Rainiers is he batting .233 (7x30) with 4 runs scored 3 doubles, 1 home run, 3 RBI and 4 walks. He was placed on 15-day disabled list
with a strained left quad J une 11 (retro to 6/10). Smoak had appeared in Seattle’s first 63 games of the season prior to missing the game
on J une 10. In 63 games, he is hitting .208 (45x216) with 26 runs, 12 doubles, 7 home runs and 29 RBI this season.

HART ON REHAB ASSIGNMENT: OF Corey Hart began his rehab assignment with AAA Tacoma on J une 21. In 5 rehab starts with
Tacoma, he is batting .300 (6x20) with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 1 RBI and 1 walk. Hart, 32, was removed from May 18 vs. the Minnesota Twins
with a strained left hamstring. He was evaluated by Mariners Medical Director Dr. Edward Khalfayan the following day in Seattle, where he
was diagnosed with a grade 2 hamstring strain. In 37 games this season Hart was batting .209 (29x139) with 5 doubles, 5 home runs and
17 RBI. He missed the entire 2013 season after undergoing a pair of knee surgeries.

COACHING STAFF: Roy Howell is the 29th manager in Tacoma franchise history. Howell is in his third season coaching in the Mariners
organization after two seasons as the hitting coach at Class-A Advanced High Desert. His managerial resume includes 3 seasons at short-
season Eugene (2003-05), 3 seasons with San Luis of the California Collegiate League (2007-10) and one season leading the field staff for
the Road Warriors of the independent Atlantic League (2011). A former first-round selection by Texas in the 1972 draft, Howell logged time
in the PCL as a player with Spokane (1974) and Portland (1985), as well as three seasons as a hitting coach with Portland (2000-02).
Pitching coach Jaime Navarro, who is entering his 6th season with the Mariners organization, returns to the Rainiers after spending the
last 3 seasons as the Mariners bullpen coach. Cory Snyder, who spent the last 3 seasons with J ackson, will serve as hitting coach. Tom
Newberg and BJ Downie each return to Tacoma as part of the training staff, while Gabe Bourland will be the team’s performance coach.

RECAP: The Generals scored 5 runs combined in the 3rd and 4th innings, but allowed 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning as J ackson fell to
Tennessee 5-6 on Friday night. CF Leon Landry (3x5, R, 2B, RBI) and DH Kevin Rivers (3x4, R) each recorded a team-high 3 hits, while
RF Julio Morban (2x4) picked up the only other multi-hit game for the Generals. Rivers hit his 3rd home run with J ackson with a solo
homer to lead off the 3rd inning. Starter Tyler Pike (2.0,2,2,2,5,1) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits in 2.0 innings, but did not factor into the
decision. RH Forrest Snow (4.0,2,0,0,0,5) struck out 5 in 4.0 scorless innings and RH Stephen Shackleford (1.0,0,0,0,0,1) struck out 1 in
a 1-2-3 9th inning. RH David Colvin (1.2,3,3,3,0,2) and RH Mayckol Guaipe combined to allow 4 runs in the 8th inning. Guaipe recorded
his 2nd loss of the season.

OF NOTE: OF Julio Morban his hit safely in his last 5 consecutive games, batting .450 (9x20) with 3 runs scored, 2 doubles and 1 walk.
Since May 24, INF Jack Marder has hit safely in 20 of 25 games with 10 multi-hit efforts, batting .356 (32x90) with 16 runs scored, 5
doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 12 RBI and 5 walks. C John Hicks has hit safely in 10 of his last 13 games, batting .342 (13x38) with 5
runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 RBI, 3 walks and 2 stolen bases. OF Leon Landry has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games with 10 multi-hit

PETERSON PROMOTED TO AA JACKSON: INF D.J. Peterson was promoted from A High Desert to AA J ackson on J une 24. In order to
make room for Peterson on the J ackson roster, INF Mickey Wiswall was released from his minor league player contract. In 65 games with
the Mavericks, Peterson hit .326 (89x273) with 51 runs scrored, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 18 home runs, 73 RBI, 23 walks and 6 stolen bases.
At the time of his promotion, he ranked among the California League leaders in nearly every offensive category, including slugging
percentage (1st/.615), total bases (1st/168), RBI (1st/71), extra-base hits (T1st/42), home runs (2nd/18), doubles (3rd/23), hits (T5th/89)
and average (6th/.326). Since May 8, Peterson leads all minor league players with 57 RBI, while ranking 2nd with 16 home runs. Peterson
hit 16 of his 18 home runs with High Desert over 37 games (5/11-6/23). He hit safely in each of his final 10 games with 8 mutli-hit efforts,
batting .442 (19x43) with 11 runs scored, 7 doubles, 6 home runs, 22 RBI, 5 walks and 1 stolen base (6/9-23). He also hit safely 20 of his
last 22 games, batting .424 (39x92) with 22 runs scored, 13 doubles, 9 home runs, 35 RBI, 11 walks and 2 stolen bases (5/28-/623).
Between May 8 and J une 23 he hit .363 (61x168) with 36 runs scored, 19 doubles, 16 home runs, 57 RBI, 17 walks and 4 stolen bases.
During this stretch he has raised his season batting average from .267 to .326.

SOUTHERN ALL-STAR GAME RECAP: The Southern League rallied for 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning, but fell short ast the North
defeated the South 6-4 in the Southern League All-Star game on Tuesday night. J ackson SS Ketel Marte batted lead off for the North
Division All-Stars, going 2-for-5 in the game. RH Mayckol Guaipe (1.0,1,0,0,0,1) tossed a scoreless 6th inning, allowing 1 hit and striking
out 1.

COACHING STAFF: After managing High Desert in 2013, James Horner will take over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the
Southern League, the J ackson Generals. Horner enters his 8th season with the Mariners (2005-10, 2013-current), but second as manager
since returning to the organization prior to last season. Pitching coach Lance Painter returns to J ackson after spending the 2013 season
with the High Desert Mavericks. Painter enters his 9th season with the Mariners, including his 4th with J ackson (2010-12). Entering his 4th
season with the Mariners organization, Mike Kinkade will serve as the Generals hitting coach. The rest of his staff will include athletic
trainer Eduardo Tamaz and performance coach Ryan White.

RECAP: The Mavericks rallied for 6 runs between the 6th and 8th inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome an early deficit as High Desert
lost to Modesto 7-14 on Friday night. C Steve Baron (2x5, RBI) and CF Travis Witherspoon (2x3, 2 R, 2B, HR, RBI, BB) each recorded 2
of the Mavericks 10 hits. Witherspoon recorded his 8th home run of the season with a solo homer with 1 out in the 3rd inning. Starter Brett
Shankin (3.0,9,7,5,0,1,HR) recorded his 2nd loss, allowing 7 runs (5 ER) on 9 hits in 3.0 innings. RH Andrew Kittredge (3.0,6,7,4,2,4)
allowed 4 runs in 3.0 innings, while LH Jordan Shipers (3.0,1,0,0,1,3) held the Nuts scoreless over the final 3.0 innings in relief.

CALIFORNIA LEAGUE PLAYER/PITCHER OF THE WEEK: INF D.J. Peterson and RHP Dylan Unsworth were named California
League Player and Pitcher of the Week, J une 16-22. Peterson recorded 4 consecutive 2-hit games after returning from the All-Star break,
batting .533 (8x15) with 3 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 4 walks. Prior to his promotion on J une 24 to AA J ackson,
Peterson ranked among the California League leaders in nearly every offensive category, including slugging percentage (1st/.615), total
bases (1st/168), RBI (1st/71), extra-base hits (T1st/42), home runs (2nd/18), doubles (3rd/23), hits (T5th/89) and average (6th/.326).
Unsworth was named Californial Leauge pitcher of the Week, after striking out a career-hig 12 batters in 7.0 shutout innings on J une 20 at
Modesto. It was his 5th win of the season and first since May 21 at Lake Elsinore. Prior to his start on J une 20, Unsworth’s previous career-
high was 9 strikeouts in 6.0 innings set on J uly 12, 2012 vs. Tri-City with Everett. He is the 3rd straight Mavericks pitcher to receive Pitcher
of the Week honor.

ALL-STAR GAME RECAP: The California League All-Stars held a 3-0 lead after 4.0 innings and held on to defeat the Carolina League All-
Stars 3-2 on Tuesday night. DH Gabriel Guerrero was the lone Maverick on the California League All-Star team. He started at DH and hit
7th in the lineup, going 0-for-2 in the game.

COACHING STAFF: The Mariners California League affiliate, the High Desert Mavericks, will be managed by Eddie Menchaca, who spent
the previous 3 seasons with Clinton. He enters his 6th season in the Mariners organization, including 4 as manager. Menchaca has led his
squad to the postseason in each of the last 4 seasons, accumulating a 238-243 (.495) record. Pitching coach Andrew Lorraine enters his
1st season with High Desert after spending the last 2 seasons with Clinton. Hitting coach Max Venable begins his 1st season as coach in
the Mariners organization. Venable appeared parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues as an outfielder, including stints with the Giants
(1979-83), the Expos (1984), the Reds (1985-87), and the Angels (1989-91). Overall he batted .241 (337x1397) with 176 runs scored, 57
doubles, 17 triples, 18 home runs and 128 RBI in 727 career games in the Major Leagues. His son, Will, is currently an outfielder with the
San Diego Padres. Tyler Moos begins his 2nd season with Mavericks as trainer and first-year performance coach Cory Ritter round out

round of the 1978 MLB Draft. Valle played for 4 teams in his 13-year Major League career, including the Mariners (1984-93), Boston
(1994), Milwaukee (1994) and Texas (1995-96). He finished with a .237 lifetime batting average, 77 home runs and 350 RBI. Nasusel
Cabrera, who also serves as the Latin American Pitching Coordinator, enters his first season with Everett after spending the last four
seasons as pitching coach with Pulaski. Andy Bottin and Mike Davis will serve as coaches, while trainer Shane Zdebiak and performance

2014 Seattle Mariners Minor League Awards:


MLB FUTURES ALL-STAR GAME


Seattle Mariners minor league infielder D.J. Peterson has been selected to play for the U.S.
squad, while outfielder Gabby Guerrero will represent the World team in the 16th annual
SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game to be played Sunday, J uly 13 at Target Field in Minnepolis as
part of All-Star weekend.

The Mariners have had 31 selections to the Futures Game since its first began in 1999. Seven
players on the current 25-man roster (+DL) played in the Futures Game in the past: John Buck
(2002), Robinson Cano (2003-04), Corey Hart (2002), Felix Hernandez (2004), Logan
Morrison (2010), James Paxton (2011) and Michael Saunders (2007). Brad Miller was
selected to the 2013 U.S. Team, but was unable to play due to his promotion to the Major League
squad. Buck (All-Star: 2010, Futures Game: 2002), Cano (All-Star: 2006, 2010-13, Futures
Game: 2003 & 2004), Hart (All-Star: 2008 & 2010, Futures Game: 2002) and Hernandez (All-
Star: 2009, 2011-13; Futures Game: 2004) are each one of 115 players to have competed n both
the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

The SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, which is now in its 16th year, features the top Minor League
prospects competing in a nine-inning contest as part of Taco Bell All-Star Sunday. The U.S.
Team, which has won each of the last four contests, leads the all-time series, 9-6. The game will
begin at 5:00 p.m. (ET)/4:00 p.m. (CT) and can be viewed live on MLB Network and MLB.com.
Featured on MLB Network for the first time, the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game will be called by
Matt Vasgersian, Sean Casey and Heidi Watney, along with MLB.com’s J onathan Mayo.

Major League Baseball, in conjunction with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau,
MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League Clubs, selected the 25 players currently on
