The Musician/Performer:

1) Should remember that first and foremost that he/she is a student. To accomplish the challenge of being a student and a
musician is never easy. You must be disciplined, dedicated and have clear goals in your mind of what you want to
accomplish and daily objectives to help you reach those goals. You owe it to yourself to get the greatest possible good
you can from your school experiences.

2) Should know they must meet the Wake County School Board & KHS Band Directors eligibility standards. Musicians
must maintain a 1.5 cum GPA or a 2.0 previous semester GPA to participate in any KHS Band/Music Department
extracurricular activity (required or voluntary). Academic Appeals will not be granted. If during the 1st or 3rd quarter
reporting period a student earns two (2) or more failing grades they will be suspended from the extracurricular activity
for three (3) weeks until satisfactory progress is made.

3) Should remember that Band/Activity comes first. You are at all times a representative of your family, school and band.
We expect you to behave, only in a manner that will bring honor to those institutions. Failing to do so will result in
disciplinary action.

4) Will accept, with good grace, the decisions of the chaperones/Band Director Representative (section leaders, Captains,
etc.), and show no disrespect to these decisions no matter how unjust they seem. Disrespect to a chaperone/representative
will result in disciplinary action.

5) Must demonstrate a positive attitude and behavior, on and off the field (or area of activity), which is characterized by
good musicianship, and use of the WCPSS character traits. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.

6) Should, by word and action, only encourage and support fellow musicians. Only positive attitudes are acceptable. You
have no right, at any time, to say or do anything that could be detrimental to classmates, parents, chaperones, or
representatives of the Knightdale High School Music Department. Any student acting in a manner that is unbecoming to
the band/group and band/group unity will be disciplined.

7) Do not allow yourself to be taken out of control by excessive emotional or physical contact (NO excessive PDA (public
displays of affection) and ABSOLUTELY NO FIGHTING). Failure to control yourself will result in disciplinary action.

8) Should know they can be disciplined for behavior that occurs off campus. Serious offenses such as arrests, criminal
charges or criminal convictions can result in dismissal from the Band/Activity and may prohibit further participation in
the Knightdale High School Band/Activity.

9) Should know the use or possession of tobacco, alcohol, or illegal drugs on school campus, at any school activity or in the
community will NOT be tolerated and can result in immediate dismissal.
a) Tobacco:
i. 1st Offense one week suspension from the band/activity (no participation in activity),
ii. 2nd Offense Suspension from the band/activity for remainder of season (no practice or
participation),

10) Should know that any act of insubordination by a band member/participant will result in disciplinary action.
(Insubordination being defined as any act in direct contradiction with the Band Directors/Chaperones/
Representatives instruction. This includes failing to complete a task requested by the Band Director.)

11) Should know that accumulating three days in suspensions from school will result in a one week suspension from the
activity in addition to any punishment issued by the Band Director. Five or more days in suspensions results in
automatic removal from the band/activity for the remainder of the season and any additional punishment the Band
Director deems appropriate.

12) Should know any participant charged with (or convicted of) a criminal offense, misdemeanor or felony, including all
traffic offenses, may be suspended from extra and/or co-curricular activities for any amount of time up to the
remainder of the students high school career. The participant must inform Band Director of any charges against
them as soon as practical, but no later than the students next participation (i.e. practice or event). The Principal and
Band Director will review the circumstances surrounding the behavior and determine what disciplinary action, if any,
is necessary. A dismissal or other disposition of any criminal charges shall not prevent school officials from imposing
discipline based on the behavior. Failure to report a criminal offense as outlined above will result in the immediate
removal of the participant from the band/activity for the remainder of the season and possibly the school year.

the band/activity. A second such offense in the school year will result in suspension from the Knightdale Band or

REC. SPORTS TEAM. A PLAYER SHOULD NEVER MISS ANY KHS PRACTICE OR EVENT DUE
TO A CONFLICT WITH AN OUTSIDE EVENT.

g) Be dressed, on time and at practice everyday. Unexcused absences will lead to reduction in time,
suspension from activity, and/or dismissal. The BAND/Activity needs every member every day!

16) Should know the Band Director will decide what is and is not an excused absence from practice.

17) Should know they cannot train, tryout, practice, or play with any Knightdale athletic team that conflicts with the
band/activity. In certain cases such as individual sports (cross country, tennis, swimming, diving, wrestling) the schedule
is flexible enough to permit participation in both.
