This study examines the effects of openings in concrete shear walls on the seismic performance of tall buildings under near-fault ground motions. A 10-story building model was analyzed with three different lateral load resisting systems: complete shear walls, shear walls with a central square opening, and shear walls with an opening on the right side. The building was subjected to time history analyses using ground motion records from the Loma Prieta and Taiwan earthquakes. Results showed substantial decreases in wall strength for models with openings. Maximum displacements were up to 8% lower for the central opening model compared to the right side opening model, and up to 17% lower than the complete wall model. Finite element analyses of wall panels found an ultimate force reduction of up
