The Book of Proverbs Chapter 20

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Wine H3196- From the Hebrew word: ‫ יין‬yayin yah’-yin From an unused root meaning to effervesce; wine (as fermented); by implication intoxication: banqueting, wine, wine [-bibber]. strong drink H7941- From the Hebrew word: ‫ שכר‬shêkâr shay-kawr’ ׁ From H7937; an intoxicant, that is, intensely alcoholic liquor: - strong drink, + drunkard, strong wine. The first time the word “wine” was mentioned in scripture was in Genesis chapter 9, starting at verse 20 when Noah got so drunk that he passed out and got taken advantage of, and had his nakedness uncovered by his son Ham. Noah was mocked by the wine, and his own son, Ham, thought it was funny. We should guard our souls from evil spirits that want to mock us. Ephesians 5:18 tells us not to destroy ourselves by getting drunk, but let the Holy Spirit fill our lives. Ephesians 5:18 Ephesians 5:19 Ephesians 5:20 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Ephesians 5:21

Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

We are encouraged to drink wine to help our stomach and any frequent illnesses: I Timothy 5:23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

Wine was also used in scripture as a topical medicine: Luke 10:33 Luke 10:34 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

Being a glutton in a sin. Wine is no longer good for you if you are a glutton drinking in excess. The four times that the word “glutton” is used in scripture; it refers to excess use of wine in the same verse; Deuteronomy 21:20 Proverbs 23:21 Matthew 11:19 Luke 7:34 Medical advice directly from God: A warning from God was given to the wife of Manoah not to drink alcohol while she was pregnant. Judges 13:3 Judges 13:4 Judges 13:5 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

Evil people use strong drink in order to take advantage of others: Habakkuk 2:15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

Note: The word “mocker” is used six times in scripture.

Alcohol is linked to 75,000 U.S. deaths per year and is the third leading cause of mortality, a government study has found. Proverbs 20:2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: Proverbs 19:12The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass. Whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul. God was provoked to anger when Israel chose to look to Egypt for help instead of coming to Him. Egypt is a idiom for the world. So we provoke God to anger when we look to the world, to new age doctrine, and to ourselves instead of the true and living God, Jehovah. Jesus died and shed his blood for us. When we look to the world, instead the Lord for our salvation, We provoke God to anger. Isaiah Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the 31:3 LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together. Isaiah For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on 31:4 his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof. Proverbs 20:3 It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling. It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: Genesis 13:6 Genesis 13:7 Genesis 13:8 Genesis 13:9 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

but every fool will be meddling. I Timothy And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only 5:13 idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Christians are prohibited from being slothful in business. A diligent Christian is a biblical Christian. Romans 12:10 Romans 12:11 Romans 12:12 Romans 12:13 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.

Proverbs 20:5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. Jesus compared living waters to the Holy Ghost and said, He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. Even though the book of Proverbs was written before the gospel of John, they have the same author, God. God used water to represent spirit in Proverbs 20:5 John 7:37 John 7:38 John 7:39 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

Proverbs 18:4 The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. Proverbs 20:6 Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find? Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: There are men who do what they do for the plaque on the wall. If someone knows that they are about to be nominated for an award, they are ready to do many superficial good deeds to secure that nomination. God tries the hearts and minds of men. We are constantly being told in scripture what God is looking for in His faithful servants. There is a supernatural benefit to having love in your heart: I Corinthians 13:1 I Corinthians 13:2 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. I Corinthians And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to 13:3 be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. I Corinthians Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself,

is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. I Corinthians For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 13:9 I Corinthians But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done 13:10 away. I Corinthians When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a 13:11 child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. I Corinthians And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is 13:13 charity. The Greek word for charity, [26] αγάπη agape. Agape is unconditional love. A faithful man will have unconditional love and keep the good deeds that he has done for someone else private. Without boasting. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

but a faithful man who can find? We should put our faith in the only one who is true and faithful. II Thessalonians But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil. 3:3 If you put your faith in man, you will be disappointed:

To have respect of persons is not good: for for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

Proverbs 20:7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him. A just man teaches his children that God is watching. He teaches them to have a conscience: Proverbs 3:1 Proverbs 3:2 Proverbs 3:3 Proverbs 3:4 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Proverbs 20:8 A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes. When the King of kings shows his face upon the earth, non of the kings or mighty men will be able to stand before him because of their wickedness. Proverbs 20:9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? Anyone who thinks that they are pure from sin without the blessing of God is delusional: Revelation 18:7 Revelation 18:8 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

When Joshua went to stand before God, Satan was there to accuse him before God because his garments were filthy. Joshua had to be made pure, and have his garments changed, and have his sins forgiven before standing before God. Zechariah Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. 3:3 Zechariah And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the 3:4 filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. Zechariah And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his 3:5 head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by. Before we can stand before God, we have to be born again. We have to be baptised in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Our sins are then forgiven and our filthy garments are supernaturally changed. John 3:1 John 3:2 John 3:3 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Proverbs 20:10 Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD. We are expected to have honest business practices: Leviticus 19:35 Leviticus 19:36 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Below are different types of weight measurements of King Solomon’s time: Ephah - ‫‘ אפה איפה‬êyphâh ‘êphâh ay-faw’, ay-faw’ Of Egyptian derivation; an ephah or measure for grain; hence a measure in general: - ephah, (divers) measure (-s). Hin - ‫ הין הין‬hîyn heen Probably of Egyptian, origin; a hin or liquid measure: - hin.

Thou shalt not have in thine house divers measures, a great and a small. But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.

Proverbs 20:11 Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. Jeremiah was chosen by God to be a prophet, even though he was just a young child. Jeremiah 1:4 Jeremiah 1:5 Jeremiah 1:6 Jeremiah 1:7 Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.

Children that are well trained are called, “peaceable fruit of righteousness”. Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Using the “rod of correction” is literally a form of exorcism: Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Proverbs 20:12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them. The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity. We should use the gift of hearing, seeing and speaking for the Lord: Psalm 94:8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? Psalm 94:9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? Psalm He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, 94:10 shall not he know? Psalm The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity. 94:11 Psalm Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law; 94:12

Psalm 94:13

That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

Proverbs 20:12 also explains the mystery of Hand eye coordination, motor skills, and how hearing works with other functions of the body. Usually when a person goes blind, their hearing and other senses increase. What is in your heart is closely related to how you understand what you hear and perceive what you see. We as Christians are to keep are hearts with due dillgence and guard our eyes and ears from profane and vain nonsense, and filth. Matthew 13:13 Matthew 13:14 Matthew 13:15 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.

Matthew 13:16

If are hearts are waxed gross, we will not know what to watch for: Revelation 16:15 Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.

“They” being the unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. Proverbs 20:13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread. Poverty will come as an armed man to the lazy. In Israel, they had to plant in the cold weather in order to have a harvest in the summer. Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest. How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

Proverbs So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. 6:11 A diligent Christian is a biblical Christian. We are called to be diligent. Proverbs 20:14 It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: Being prudent does not include defrauding your neighbor for goods and / or services: James 5:4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth: James 4:16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil. Proverbs 20:15 There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. God was pleased with Solomon for asking for wisdom rather than riches: I Kings 3:9 I Kings 3:10 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.

Proverbs 20:16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. Proverbs 22:26 Be not thou one of them that strike hands, or of them that are sureties for debts. surety H6148- from the Hebrew word: ‫‛ ערב‬ârab aw-rab’

A primitive root; to braid, that is, intermix; technically to traffic (as if by barter); also to give or be security (as a kind of exchange): - engage, (inter-) meddle (with), mingle (self), mortgage, occupy, give pledges, be (-come, put in) surety, undertake. Proverbs 20:17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. gravel H2687- From the Hebrew word: ‫ חצץ‬châtsâts khaw-tsawts’ From H2686; properly something cutting; hence gravel (as grit); also (like H2671) an arrow: arrow, gravel (stone). It should be our goal to stay away from deceit and be like Christ: Isaiah 53:9 I Peter 2:21 I Peter 2:22 Jeremiah 17:9 Jeremiah 17:10 Jeremiah 17:11 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

Proverbs 20:18 Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war. As we seek counsel, we should remember to seek godly counsel and to involve God in our decisions. For where two or three ar gathered in His name, there He is in the midst of them. Matthew 18:18 Matthew 18:19 Matthew 18:20 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Wise counsel is counsel from people who fear the Lord, Jehovah. Proverbs 24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.

Proverbs 20:19 He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips. Talebearer H7400- From the Hebrew: ‫ רכיל‬râkîyl raw-keel’ From H7402; a scandal monger (as travelling about): - slander, carry tales, talebearer. Flattereth H6601- From the Hebrew: ‫ פתה‬pâthâh paw-thaw’ ּ A primitive root; to open, that is, be (causatively make) roomy; usually figuratively (in a mental or moral sense) to be (causatively make) simple or (in a sinister way) delude: - allure, deceive, enlarge, entice, flatter, persuade, silly (one). According to the Strongs Hebrew & Greek Dictionaries, a talebearer, as used in Proverbs 20:19, is a scandal monger. Leviticus 19:16 Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour: I am the LORD.

If we are worried about what everyone else is doing, then we can’t be efficent or dilligent in doing our part. II Thessalonians 3:11 II Thessalonians 3:12 For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Proverbs 20:20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness. Curseth H7043- From the Hebrew: ‫ קלל‬qâlal kaw-lal’ A primitive root; to be (causatively make) light, literally (swift, small, sharp, etc.) or figuratively (easy, trifling, vile, etc.): - abate, make bright, bring into contempt, (ac-) curse, despise, (be) ease (-y, -ier), (be a, make, make somewhat, move, seem a, set) light (-en, -er, ly, -ly afflict, -ly esteem, thing), X slight [-ly], be swift (-er), (be, be more, make, re-) vile, whet. Proverbs 20:21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed. The parable of the prodigal son, that Jesus gave, from Luke 15:11 - 32 is the perfect example. Proverbs 20:22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee. Vengeance belongs to the Lord: Deuteronomy 32:35 To me belongeth vengeance, and recompense; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.

Vengeance by the disciples on their enemies was rebuked by Christ, because it was inconsistent with Christian spirit. And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

“and bringeth the wheel over them” refers to a theshing wheel used to seperate grain or seeds from the husks and straw. Just like in the parable about the wheat and the tares. Belly H990- From the Hebrew: ‫ בטן‬beṭen beh’-ten ּ From an unused root probably meaning to be hollow; the belly, especially the womb; also the bosom or body of anything: - belly, body, + as they be born, + within, womb. We are the light of the world here to shine for Christ.

Proverbs 20:30 The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly. Corporal punishment drives away demons. Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
