This is considered a
positive aspect
because kids under
the age of 12 can
play in the park. The
park is clean and safe
for families to come
spend time with their
kids. The people in
the community
wouldn’t have to
worry about broken
glass or any
dangerous aspect of
the safety of their
children.

Clean, neat, cool, and a safe place in the
community where the kids go and play.
This is considered a
negative aspect
because a beaten up
car is taking up space
for a garden or a
community center. A
beaten up car was
not being used by the
owner which gave the
image to the
community it was
okay to have a
beaten up car any
where you like
because no one is
using the vacant lot
for anything besides a
storage space for
broken down cars.
Beaten down rust bucket and very
old.
This is considered a
positive aspect
because in the
Woodlawn
community there
isn’t anything in the
empty vacant lots
and having a garden
is a perfect use for
it. A garden is a
perfect example of
a way for the
community to take
care of the
neighborhood.

Green and earthy, it brings life upon
the community.
This is considered a
negative aspect
because a little girl
had fallen into that
hole. This hole
could be dangerous
to the community
because any little
kid could easily fall
into the hole and
get hurt. The
community should
find a way to either
warn people about
the hole or just fill
the hole with soil.

Dark deep hole in the middle of a
vacant lot. Also a little girl had
fallen into it.

When we went past
65
th
and Kimbark
we saw someone
cutting the vacant
grass. He tried to
make the
neighborhood
better by keeping
the grass
maintained at a
short height.

Community effort: fresh cut grass in a
vacant lot
It’s good to see
many schools in the
Woodlawn
community, so when
people get older
they can give back.
When people give
back it makes the
community look
better and helps
others in the
community.

The walls under the
viaduct are
crumbling. There is
graffiti on the walls
and they are
molded. The water
is leaking from the
surface.

Infrastructure: viaduct at Marquette
(66

There are piles of
trash under the
viaduct. There are
bags, empty liquor
bottles, containers
and piles of dirt in
the trash.

It’s wrong that
people choose to
destroy what so
little good things we
have in the
neighborhood.
Because of that
people on the
outside looking in
judge us.

All the graffiti everywhere
Some areas in the
neighborhood need
to be reconstructed
(for example, all the
empty lots and
abandoned buildings
we saw and pot
holes). It’s a lot of
pot holes around
here in every
neighborhood they
filled the pot holes
except for the areas
Woodlawn – Stony
Island.

Used for negative
activities (trap
houses)

New buildings can
be built.

Can be used for
other things (store,
mall, etc.)

Day care uses

High school and
colleges can be built
for students
academic levels

Clinics (public aid)

Murals can be
created to set a
positive mood.

Make most graffiti
into a different
meaning.

Build more
inspiration for
others using a
positive way for
graffiti.

The decayed pieces
of areas can be
created as a statue
for a bigger
meaning.
Graffiti
Good for safety

Should be placed in
more common
places.

Could help solve a
lot of crime taking
place any where.

More landmarks for
kids to elaborate
on.

This shows the
history of the
community.

The first positive
aspect was while we
were exploring the
community we went
past a beautiful
piece of land, the
65
th
/Woodlawn
community garden.
I believe it’s pretty
important because
it’s symbolic of self-
determination,
team work, and
care. It’s a piece of
art.

The second positive
aspect is the
Woodlawn Adult
Health Care Clinic.
This is a positive
aspect because it’s
more convenient for
people who don’t
have a constant
transportation, and
elderly people who
can’t get to an from.
It makes the
community look
outstanding.

Woodlawn Adult Health Clinic
The first negative
aspect of the
dilapidated house is
it seems as the
government has
manipulated the
building, numerous
half done
construction
projects were done.
They also had an
available entry
opening to thieves
and animals. It puts
a bad imprint on the
community - some
may see it as a trap
house.
Dilapidated House
The second negative
aspect is while we
were on our journey,
we went passed a
big ball of garbage
next to a garbage
can. It shows as if
our community is
unfit to take care of
our land and its just
a negative all over.

In the neighborhood
we saw good and
bad sights. We saw
gardens, all different
types of gardens
such as the Japanese
garden. We had a
tour of the garden.
We also saw old
viaducts and
abandoned
buildings. The
viaduct could use
more work on it.
The church we saw
was a positive thing
for the
neighborhood.

Abandoned
buildings are not
good because
people can get
kidnapped and
taken into the
building. Also there
are broken windows
in the abandoned
buildings.

Abandoned buildings
Bad things about
the viaducts: It was
dark and had
broken glass.

How to make it
better: Maybe some
art work on the
walls and a little
light so people can
see at night. Maybe
they can put some
history of the block
on the wall.

Garden:
-nice flowers
-keeping the garden
up to date
-nice amount of
space
-didn’t have any
negative energy
around
-respectful people
-made people feel at
home
-the garden was
feeding people
-the artwork was
very nice

After hitting that
main street (Stony
Island) many young
African American
boys started to
appear. When we
walked past the
boys they shouted
out “Hey you? What
do #FTL mean!”
Come here” and he
asked how old I was.
As a female I felt
disrespected.
When we hit Stony
Island, we were
surprised that we
saw African
American business
owners along Stony
Island.

Some good qualities
about the
environment is the
buildings are new
and nice and parks
are clean. Another
good quality is the
park is a safe place
to play.

New houses along the block
One negative
quality is the soil
and this is bad for
the community. It’s
bad because of the
littering and now it
hasn’t been kept up
with.
