Leading Citizen recognition

While the scenes from a John
Steuart Curry exhibit on display at the
Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) in
West Bend are more than 70 years
old, they are still very familiar to many
residents in the state.
The exhibit, John Steuart Curry:
At Home in Wisconsin, features work
created by Curry from 1936 until his
death in 1946, a time when he served
as the artist-in-residence at the
University of Wisconsin College of
Agriculture. Curry was a Kansas
native who was one of the leading
artists in the regionalist art movement
of the 1930s.
The exhibit opened June 27 and
runs through Sept. 14.
Anybody who loves Wisconsin, is
proud of Wisconsin maybe they
went to (UW) Madison, they love
Madison football anybody who
grew up on a farm is going to love this
show, said Graeme Reid, MOWA
director of collections and exhibitions.
This is a classic example of what
regionalism is all about, that was you
paint subject that the ordinary man or
woman can understand.
Reid then pointed to a scene from
canvasses which showed images of
tractors and contour farming along a
gradually rolling hillside.
Imagine this is hanging in a live-
stock barn in State Fair Park in 1946.
Youve got a bunch of farmers coming
in there theyre going to totally get
this, theres no abstraction, theres no
mystery to this, Reid said.
Reid noted that many of the
images still exist in the state today, as
he recalled a recent bicycle ride
through Washington County where he
saw red barns and blue skies.
Its still around, you can still see
this in Wisconsin today, Reid said.
The link between the past and
today in Currys work over that
decade is another part of the connec-
tions his work sought to make in role
as an artist-in-residence at Madison.
This was setting a trend, Reid
said of Curry coming to UW. Currys
arrival was profiled by Time maga-
zine.
That is a national story that
theyre bringing in an artist of that cal-
iber to campus, he said.

the Wisconsin Idea the concept

boundaries of the campus. He said the idea
is about bringing the university to all resi-
dents of the state, including its farmers. In
that regard, staff from the universitys
College of Agriculture could explain the con-
cepts of contour farming and how to improve
milk yield to farmers, while the discovery of
specific types of vitamins by UWresearchers
improved the health of state residents.
One scene on display at the exhibit
seeks to bring together the link between the
farmer benefitting from the assistance of the
university.
The exhibit will include several pieces
that are displayed for the first time in
decades and some that are displayed
together for the first time. The exhibit includes
drawings created for the universitys year-
book, a draft from the panel for the bio-
chemistry building and studio drawings. Also
included are two telegrams in which Curry
was offered the position and his acceptance
of the post.
In many ways were still benefitting from
the Wisconsin Idea, Reid said. A lot of
technological advances come out of the uni-
versity, so this is what is happening here
the university is making peoples lives better.
You might not be able to hear of it, but that
what research scientists are doing at
Madison theyre coming up with ways to
make peoples lives better.

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight under-bite,
otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight.
I had braces on my top teeth at a young age
and as I grew up my under-bite worsened. This
under-bite has resulted in some unnatural wear
and chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Do
you have any non-surgery solutions available?
Dear Ted, there are many options for fixing
underbites that are non-surgical but I cannot
comment on your options until I have
completed an examination and x-ray visit.
Sometimes orthodontics can correct your
problem other times crowns can be used to
change your bite. So surgery is always the last
option considered. It is important to
remember that once significant wear and
chipping has occurred, the teeth that caused
this chipping also need to be corrected to
recover the space that was lost from these teeth
erupting in to the chipped areas.
Dear Dr. Winter, I had a tooth break at the
gumline. I really dont want a bridge as I have
heard they have to shave down the other teeth
and those teeth will be weakened. I am also
concerned that I might need bone grafting to
have an implant. What is your opinion about
placing implants the same day the tooth comes
out? Can this help me avoid a bone graft?
Dear John, the ability to place an implant the
day the tooth is removed is dependent on
several factors. First the remaining bone
should be intact and thicker than 1.5 mm so
that there is good blood supply to fill in the
gap between the implant and the remaining
tooth socket. Next there should be good
stabilization of the implant and if it can not be
placed with good insertion torque, it may be
better to graft the socket and come back in 3
months to place the implant after bone fill has
occurred. The literature supports both means
of placing implants but it is still dependent
upon clinician skill, bone quality and quantity
and cosmetic expectations of the patient.

tucked safely in the garden.

The 14th annual Battle of the Bands will
be held on Tuesday, July 22 from 5 p.m. at
11 p..m. at the Washington County
Grounds in the entertainment tent. The
Washington County Fair Grounds are
located at 3000 Hwy PV (Pleasant Valley
Road) in West Bend. The following are
expectations for all bands performing at
this event:
There will be an entry fee of $50 for
all bands selected to perform. This is due
once you are accepted as a participant for
this event.
Participants will arrive prior to the
start of the event and stay at the fair
grounds for the entire event. They will be
notified of the exact times prior to July 11.
The majority of bands members must
be between the ages of 14-21. We have
extended the age range of those who are
eligible to compete to included older
youth/young adults.
Bands will be assigned times to play.
In order to accommodate all interested
bands, we will be sticking to a very strict
schedule. You must be set up and ready to
go at your scheduled time.
The amount of time you have to play
will be dependent upon the number of
bands participating, but in general you will
have between 15-25 minutes.
Music selected must be appropriate
for an all ages type of showno profanity,
references to drugs, alcohol or violence.
Any band who ignores this rule will be dis-
qualified.
At least one member of band must
attend a mandatory meeting in late June or
early July. Information on the date and time
will be sent to the contact person listed on
the sign up sheet.
Keep in mind that this is sponsored
by STAND (Students Taking Action Not
Drugs). Select clothing free from tobacco,
alcohol and drug references.
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will
be chosen. 3rd place will receive $100,
2nd place will receive $200 and 1st place
will receive 300.
