A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF CALVARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

UNDER the STEEPLE

A Thank You
from Pastor
Grant

Dear Calvary Family,

We wanted to thank you

for the gracious and
warm send-off on June
22nd. We were blessed
by many kind words and
friendly embraces.

My family has
appreciated our time
serving Christ alongside
you, and you have
helped shape our future
service in ministry.
We will carry the love
you have shared with us,
and gladly know that we
are connected in heart
and spirit each time we
worship and gather at
our Lord's table.

May God continue to

richly bless Calvary and
her ministries.

With gratitude,
Grant, Amy, Lily and
Clara Armstrong
A Chance to Meet-n-Greet with the New Pastors

Keeping Open
Doors at Calvary
New Building Use Policy brings more
structure for ministry and fellowship to
thrive
(Re)Ignite Your
Passion

We believe that church is

more than a building, it is
a bodyone that serves,
laughs, learns, and loves
together.

Whether youre new to

Calvary or have gotten
disconnected, now might
be a great time to explore
new study, service, and
fellowship opportunities
available.

IGNITION is an hour-long
course designed to
overview whats
happening at Calvary,
look at your individual
gifts and skills, and help
you find meaningful ways
to connect into the life of
the church.

To RSVP, stop by the

Connections Center on
Sundays or visit

With a newly expanded building and
i ncr eased oppor t uni t i es t o gr ow,
fellowship and play, Calvarys Trustees
Committee has updated the churchs
Building Use Policy. Calvarys Church
Council recently approved the updated
policy, effective June 1, which is designed
to do several things:

Facilitate a more effective utilization of

the building for Calvary ministries that
are meeting the mission and vision of
the church.

Establish an appropriate fee structure

for non-ministry uses of the building by
various community groups.

Clarify the process and expectations for

church members wishing to use the
church for personal purposes.
Priorities of Use
One of the first things this policy set out to
do was to establish a hierarchy of priority
for activities seeking use of the church
facility. Following are the scheduling
priorities for room usage, from highest to
lowest:

1. Calvary church events organized to

carry out the mission of the church.
2. Church-rel at ed groups f ormal l y
approved as a church-sponsored
organization.
3. Calvary member weddings.
4. Calvary member special events, such
as family reunions, anniversaries, and
birthdays.
5. Non-church member weddings.
6. Non-church related community service
organizations approved by a pastor or
Calvary Committee or represented by
a Calvary member.
7. Ineligible. The facilities of the church
ar e not avai l abl e f or par t i san
purposes, for recruitment of members
for clubs outside the church, for
private enterprise, or for fundraising
purposes for organizations outside the
church.
Update from Dr. Elma Jocson in the Philippines
By Carroll Bross, Outreach Committee

Calvary recently received an update from

our covenant missionary, Dr. Elma Jocson,
telling of her current activities.

She is at home in her native Philippines, on

leave from her normal duties with the
General Board of Global Missions, as she
tends to her own medical needs and the
needs of her aging mother. She appreciates
the resources that are available in Manila as
opposed to those available in the remote
locations in which shes served for a number
of years.

She stays actively involved in her local United Methodist church as well as
conference participation. She fullls speaking engagements and leads a womens
Bible study. Her work in a training hospital as a consultant pediatric surgeon
provides her with opportunities to perform complex surgeries on babies and small
children. She continues to do Gods work, regardless of where she is.

Building Fees
Events and activities that are under
Calvarys ministry committees (categories
1 and 2) have been accounted for through
the annual budgeting process, and will not
i ncur bui l di ng use fees. Weddi ngs
(categories 3 and 5) fall under a special
fee schedule, which is determined by the
wedding party and Calvary at the time of
reservation. Because personal use of the
facility by members (category 4) typically
requires little set-up and maintenance,
there is no fee assessed. For non-church
community groups (category 6) looking to
use the facility, a nominal, at-cost fee
(typically $25 per room) will be assessed
to cover the custodial support and ongoing
maintenance of the building.

Making a Room Reservation

Make a timely request
Because all requests are reviewed by the
appropriate church committee, please
allow at least two weeks prior to your event
date for request approval. Due to the
evolving nature of ministry, we also limit
reservations to no more than 3 months in
advance.

Request through the appropriate

committee
For ministry-related activities, you will need
to determine which ministry committee
your activity falls under: Worship &
Creative Arts, Adult Ministry, Family
Ministry, or Outreach. For personal and
community use, or you may use the
General Request form listed below, which
is reviewed by a Community Engagement
committee. We highly suggest you meet
with the appropriate committee leader prior
to making your request; for a listing of
current committee leaders, contact the
Calvary office at (309) 452-5413.
