EXT. SPRING CREEK - EVENING - FLASH FORWARD
A weeping willow overhangs a creek. "The Same Boy You’ve
Always Known" by The White Stripes plays.
JERRY WRIGHT (18), sits by the bank. He’s an utter mess in
his busted up tux. He sobs and wipes his eyes. Next to him
is a WHITE JEWELRY BOX.
SUPER: Bellehome, Pennsylvania. Prom Night.
His hand shakes as he pulls out a SILVER NECKLACE from the
box, screams, and heaves it.
It lands with a SPLASH.
FADE IN:
INT. AUDREY’S HOUSE - BASEMENT - EVENING
The song plays through speakers. Jerry sits dazed on a
couch, lost in the music.
His best friend, AUDREY GREEN (18) sits beside him. She’s
gorgeous in that understated girl-next-door kinda way.
Jerry’s in his work clothes, white button-down shirt and
black slacks. She tries to get his attention.
AUDREY
(muted at fist)
Jerry? Jerry? Ground control to
Major Tom?
(louder)
Jerry!
He snaps back to reality.
AUDREY (CONT’D)
You with us?
SUPER: The Previous Saturday.
Still dazed, Jerry glances to his scrawny, nerdy, co-worker
HAYDEN WAY (17) who sits in a chair beside them. Jerry’s
gaze falls on Audrey.
JERRY
Uh, yeah, I just was thinking.
AUDREY
Oh. I missed you at the creek
today. Thought you had the day off.
Jerry shakes his head.
2.
JERRY
I wish.
AUDREY
That’s too bad, Leon was there.
(beat)
Seemed kinda restless. You’re not
still buying from him, are you?
JERRY
Nah, May’s really been on me about
that. He just wanted me to lay some
bass tracks on some samples.
AUDREY
He’s still trying to DJ?
JERRY
Programmer, but whatever. Thank God
he gave up trying to rap.
AUDREY
(teasing)
I thought you were the rapper.
Jerry blushes.
JERRY
I don’t get that stoned anymore.
(beat)
Anyhow, sorry about earlier, I
totally spaced that Lilith needed
the car... calling you outta the
blue felt like such a dick move.
AUDREY
You’re fine. So, two weeks,
parent-free, huh? Lucky.
Jerry shrugs. Hayden chimes in.
HAYDEN
We could always hang out.
Jerry sighs.
AUDREY
(re: Jerry)
Why are you down? Empty house and a
girlfriend on call... Seems like a
pretty sweet deal to me.
3.
JERRY
That’d be nice... Lately May’s
never in the mood. She always seems
"annoyed."
He seems bothered, she notices and tries to comfort him.
AUDREY
(reassuring)
You two are cute together. You’re a
good boyfriend, stop beating
yourself up.
He hands his controller off to Hayden.
JERRY
(re: Hayden)
Here, tag in.
He stands and eyes his phone. There’s a text from MAY. "Babe
meet me at the mall at 7." He heads towards the stairs.
AUDREY
Leaving?
JERRY
Last minute prom shopping, you know
how it is. Gotta get all this
looking sexy.
Glides his hand down his torso.
JERRY (CONT’D)
You know, for the lady.
AUDREY
(teasing)
You’re such a gentleman.
JERRY
See you later, Assafrass.
Audrey rolls her eyes.
AUDREY
At least my ex never called me
Kumquat.
JERRY
May called me Squanto! I thought
Kumquat was his like sidekick.
4.
AUDREY
(teasing)
Bye Jerry. Enjoy getting dressed up
for your hand tonight.
(beat)
And stop worrying, days can only
get better, right?
JERRY
(unconvinced)
I guess.
As he leaves, Hayden steals his seat. Jerry ascends the
stairs, his phone rings, and he answers without looking.
JERRY
Hey babe, I’m heading home now...
INT. LEON’S CAR - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
LEON RENNES, (18) talks on his phone. He’s dressed in
well-worn jeans, a faded leather jacket, and a shirt with a
SEX PISTOLS graphic on it. We can tell by his
Central-Pennsylvania accent that he’s not British, but an
anglophile nonetheless.
JERRY (ON THE PHONE)
Babe?
Leon snickers.
LEON
Babe? You trying to make me cum?
He takes a wide, generous curb.
INT. AUDREY’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
Jerry makes his way through Audrey’s kitchen.
JERRY
Leon? Holy shit! I can’t really
talk right now...
INT. LEON’S CAR - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
Leon cruises through their neighborhood, he scoffs.
LEON
Can’t talk?
5.
INT. AUDREY’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
Jerry walks past Audrey’s dad, KEVIN GREEN (40s), a large
man sprawled out on a recliner with a beer in his hand. An
episode of "Gods, Guns, and Automobiles", plays on the TV.
JERRY
(re: Leon)
I gotta run, my girlfriend’s
expecting me in forty.
(re: Kevin Green)
Catch ya later, Mr. Green.
Green waves as he heads out the front door.
KEVIN GREEN
See you tomorrow, Jer.
EXT. AUDREY’S HOUSE - EVENING
Leon’s car idles outside Audrey’s house and he hangs out the
window, phone still in his hand.
LEON
Please! I need you! You said you’d
help me. Don’t make me fucking beg!
JERRY
What’re you doing here?
Jerry hurries away. Leon follows him with his car.
LEON
I’ve been trying to find your ass,
and when aren’t you at Audrey’s?
(beat)
Now come on, man! You’ll be on your
date in no time!
Leon leans over and pops open the passenger’s side door.
JERRY
You promise?
Leon holds up his hand as if swearing on a bible.
LEON
Fucking right hand, mate.
Jerry wavers, then gets in, and Leon speeds off.
6.
EXT. WAY’S MARKET - NIGHT
Leon’s car pulls up to the side of a closed Way’s Market, a
small "mom and pop" store. On the front door, the HOURS
READ: Mon - Sun. 9am - 8pm.
INT. LEON’S CAR - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
Jerry looks out, noticeably on edge, then back at Leon.
JERRY
(nervous)
What’re we doing here?
Jerry’s phone buzzes, he pulls it out. MAY CALLING. Leon
holds out his hand.
LEON
Gimme your work keys.
JERRY
No way!
LEON
(insistent)
For the fucking senior prank! What
happened to "let’s go down in
history, man?" Now hand ’em over!
(beat)
That’s it, I’m breaking in!
Leon gets out of his car and a nervous Jerry reluctantly
follows.
JERRY
(harsh whisper)
Leon, wait!
EXT. WAY’S MARKET - EVENING - CONTINUOUS
Jerry hurries to catch up with Leon.
JERRY
(hushed)
Dude! I barely remember saying
that! I was smashed! So were you.
Leon does no such thing.
LEON
Fuck your excuses! You wanna be a
legend, right? Gimme your keys and
wait like five minutes. All you
7.
LEON
gotta do is be my Ryan Gosling, how
fucking hard is that?
JERRY
Ryan Gosling?
LEON
(frustrated)
Like Drive!
Finally Jerry relents and hastily digs into his pocket and
tosses Leon his work keys.
JERRY
(sternly)
Five minutes.
Leon rushes off, Jerry hurries back to the car and gets in
on the driver’s side.
INT. LEON’S CAR - EVENING
SUPER: Thirteen Minutes Later...
... Fourteen Minutes
Jerry anxiously gazes out the REAR VIEW MIRROR. A PATROL CAR
creeps towards him. His knuckles whiten around the wheel as
he crouches. The patrol car rolls past and out of sight.
Jerry’s phone rings. He mutes and pockets it.
MOMENTS LATER; Leon tears out of the store clutching a large
box filled to the brim with GNOMES.
LEON
Go! Go! Go! Punch it!
Jerry punches the gas and they speed off. Way’s Market
quickly vanishes behind them.
JERRY
Where’s my key? You remembered to
lock up, right?
Leon tosses him his key back and pulls out a crude joint and
lights it. Jerry shakes his head disapprovingly and glimpses
at the box. At the top is "GEK", a surly old gnome with rosy
cheeks and a great white beard. A broom gripped in his left
hand, he wears green jacket, orange pants, and a red pointed
hat.
8.
LEON
(excited)
Gnomes, you cheeky cunt! Now hit
this!
He offers Jerry the joint, who refuses.
JERRY
I promised May I’d cut down,
remember?
LEON
Yeah, cut down, not stop. She’s not
here, so come on, toke up! We’re
fucking celebrating.
Reluctantly, Jerry takes the joint and inhales deeply.
LEON (CONT’D)
Trust me, this prank’s gonna be
bloody epic!
Jerry warily glances at Gek, then takes another hit.
EXT. JERRY’S HOUSE - NIGHT - MUCH LATER
Leon’s dirt covered hatchback park in front of Jerry’s
house. It’s a decent sized TUDOR that screams middle, to
upper-middle-class. Three stories, six bedrooms, four baths
and a long drive way that snakes to the curb.
Jerry climbs the drive as Leon rushes off.
EXT. LEON’S HOUSE - NIGHT
Leon’s shuts off his lights as his car quietly rolls into
the driveway. It’s a small, two story American
Craftsman-inspired green house. The driveway runs along the
side and is bordered by a tall green hedge.
INT. LEON’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Leon sneaks into his darkened house. The light turns on and
he stops dead in his tracks. HARRISON (47) stands at the
switch and next to him MARGARET (43). Both are in pajamas,
awake past any reasonable hour and glaring at their stoned
son. He tries to avoid eye contact and yawns.
LEON
(feigning sleepiness)
Sorry, I had some car trouble...
He shuffles towards the HALLWAY.
9.
HARRISON
Car trouble, my ass!
Harrison drops a huge Zip-lock bag stuffed with PSYCHEDELIC
MUSHROOMS on the kitchen table. Leon freezes as he ogles the
nearly pound of drugs in front of him.
HARRISON (CONT’D)
That’s what I thought.
LEON
Dad!
HARRISON
Don’t feed me your horseshit, Leon!
You can either get out now or the
cops can escort you.
LEON
Cops?!
(pleads)
Mom! Tell dad he’s overreacting!
She says nothing, trying to hold back tears.
LEON (CONT’D)
What about my shit?
HARRISON
Your shit? Your shit is in my
house! Don’t think you’re leaving
with any of it!
LEON
I can’t leave like this!
HARRISON
The hell you can’t! You got your
junkie friends! Borrow a shirt!
Leon takes off down the hallway.
INT. LEON’S HOUSE - HALLWAY - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
He rushes towards his room, Harrison is right behind him.
INT. LEON’S HOUSE - LEON’S ROOM - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Leon runs into his room and slams the door shut. He hastily
slides his dresser in front of it. Furious, Harrison pounds
on the door.
10.
HARRISON (O.S)
Open the door! I swear to God! Open
the fucking door!
Leon hastily packs a DUFFEL BAG as his dad yells and pound
on the door. He messily throws in heaps of clothes, his
laptop. He removes a top drawer as his father pushes against
the dresser. Taped to the back is another large bag of
mushrooms. He rips it off, stuffs it in and quickly zips his
bag.
Leon throws open his window and hurriedly climbs out as
Harrison forces his way into his room.
EXT. LEON’S HOUSE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Inside, Harrison makes a grab for him. Leon stumbles
backwards and topples a short way to the ground. He lands
with an oomph, picks himself up, and runs across the yard.
His father bursts out the side door and rushes towards him
as he jumps into his car.
INT. LEON’S CAR - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
"Heartilation" by Andrew Jackson Jihad blasts from the
stereo as Leon punches the gas. He peels out as his dad
pounds on his window.
EXT. LEON’S HOUSE - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
He SLAMS INTO the garbage and recyclables as he speeds off,
Harrison fumes and catches his breath as Leon’s taillights
vanish down the street.
INT. LEON’S CAR - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
The song picks up as Leon, tearfully hyperventilating, grips
the wheel and races out of his neighborhood. He looks at the
duffel bag on the passenger’s seat, then back at the road.
It’s all too much to process.
FADE TO:
INT. JERRY’S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
ON THE TV, "King of the Hill’s" Hank Hill let’s the world
know, "That boy ain’t right." A stoned and couch-locked
Jerry clicks off the TV and glances to the far wall.
There, a series of EMBARRASSING FAMILY PORTRAITS hang, among
them, two large paintings of Jerry and Lilith’s faces. The
artist’s rendition are less then professional.
He stands and makes his way out of the room.
11.
INT. JERRY’S HOUSE - KITCHEN - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
He walks past the kitchen and peers in briefly. He gazes out
the large FRENCH DOORS to an empty back porch then continues
on.
INT. JERRY’S HOUSE - HALLWAY - NIGHT - CONTINUOUS
Incredibly stoned, Jerry stumbles past his sister, Lilith’s
room. He can hear her talking inside.
LILITH (O.S)
Nah, can’t tonight.... I dunno, I
don’t feel like being groped on by
some horny frat boy, plus I’m done
hanging out with these girls who
are just "finding themselves".
Townie’s are no better!
He ambles towards his darkened ROOM.
