Match Report;
Wellington Diesels snatch overtime victory over Parramatta Rams --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wellington,NZ- The Wellington Diesels made the shrewd decision this off season to spend good money to sign Punter Adam Moala and Kicker Jay Hald. Coach Nick Flemming had signalled Special Teams as one area the Diesels could make significant improvements and today against the Rams it paid dividends. After the Rams took the lead 13-10 thanks to an Ethan Ritchie field goal with just 44 seconds remaining, it seemed this tight encounter was turning in favour of the visitors. Yet Peni Puna hit Rowan Binge and then Neil Palau to get the Diesels to the Rams 32 yard line. The problem was that Hald would be kicking into quite a gale but it proved no problem at all as the NFL kicker nailed the 3 pointer from 49 yards out. Not satisfied with sending the game into overtime, Hlad was called upon again this time after Parramatta gifted Wellington field position when Brandon Binge muffed a punt return at his own 19 yard line. Wasting no time Flemming sent Hlad straight out and he nailed the winner.
"It was not our best performance but it was a win and we needed one no matter how we got it" said Flemming after the game. He must have been concerned as his Quarterback Puna threw three first half interceptions of which the Rams claimed 10 points from the mistakes. Earlier Chris Woodbine had taken full toll of a Trent Cannon pick as the rams Quarterback rolled out of the pocket to his right and in desperation only found the Diesels cornerback who easily took it back 10 yards for the score. Canon rebounded when he connected with impressive import Matt Jones from 17 yards. Jones used his size to fend off the coverage.
Wellington tied the game away at 13all early in the third quarter but from here right up until Parramatta re-took the lead in the final moments the game was a stale mate.
