DENVER … November 19, 2009… Leventhal, Brown & Puga, P.C. announced today
that founding partner Jim Leventhal was named Denver’s Medical Malpractice Lawyer
of the Year for 2010 by Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-reviewed
publication in the legal profession. Leventhal has been listed in Best Lawyers in
America since 1993 in the Medical Malpractice category. This is the first year
that Best Lawyers has bestowed an award for Lawyer of the Year in the Medical
Malpractice category.
Best Lawyers released its 16th edition of the “Best Lawyers in America,”
which showcases leading attorneys spanning various high-profile legal specialties
among large communities. Only one lawyer in each specialty within the largest
legal communities nationwide was named “Lawyer of the Year.”
Each year, Best Lawyers compiles its list of outstanding attorneys by
conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys whereby thousands of leading lawyers
confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The current edition of The Best
Lawyers in America (2010) is based on more than 2.8 million detailed evaluations
of lawyers by their peers. The lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year”
received particularly high ratings in the surveys, which were based on ability,
professionalism and integrity.
Steven Naifeh, managing editor of Best Lawyers, said: “We continue to
believe – as we have for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is
the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession. We would like to
congratulate Jim Leventhal on being selected as the Best Lawyers Medical

Leventhal added: “I am gratified to be chosen by a jury of my peers for

I’ve built a four-decade career and practice centered around this cause, and I am
very honored that colleagues from the Denver area are recognizing our firm’s
dedication to medical malpractice.”
Leventhal has been practicing law since 1974. He began his legal career as a
public defender with the State of Colorado. In 1978, he joined K. Norman Kripke,
a founder of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, as an associate handling
personal injury and medical malpractice work. In 1981, Leventhal started his own
firm emphasizing personal injury and medical malpractice, and was a sole
practitioner for several years. Today, Leventhal, Brown and Puga employs 12
Leventhal serves on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Trial Lawyers
Association; the Board of Governors for the American Association for Justice
(AAJ), formerly American Trial Lawyers Association; and also is co-chair of the
Medical Malpractice Committee for the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. In
October 2003, he was elected co-chairperson of the Medical Negligence Information
Group for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), a position dedicated
to educating attorneys about medicine and medical negligence. Leventhal also
lectures nationally on behalf of the AAJ. Throughout his career, he has appeared
on Dateline NBC, CBS News and was interviewed on National Public Radio.
Over the years, Leventhal has been recognized by the legal profession,
earning the Best of The Bar Award in Plaintiff’s Medical Malpractice – Colorado
2005, from the Denver Business Journal in conjunction with the Denver Bar
Association. He also received the Kenneth M. Kripke Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association in 2006 and was named among the Top 50
Lawyers in State of Colorado, by Colorado Super Lawyers.
Leventhal resides in Greenwood Village, Colo., with his wife and son. He
is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and earned his juris doctor degree
from the University of Denver.
