SCREEN ANALYSIS
(Wiley Mill and Sieve Shaker)
INTRODUCTION
Size reducuon is the produotion of snraller pa*icles from larger particles of the same
material. A fracture in the larger particles takes place in the operation upon the
4plication
of
pressure.
The effectiveness of a
given size reduction operation can be evaluaJed by making a
screen analysis.
In making a screen aralysis, the screens to be used are cleaned with a brush md tapped
free from any adhering
particle. They are nested together with dre lowest mesh number at the bp
and dre highest mesh number st the bottom. A botbm pan and top mver are put in place
to
complete ihe set. A weighed amount of material is placed
on the iop screen. The screens are
shaken long enough for the particles to &ll through until a screen is acquired where the openings
are too small brthe
particles to pass through. The weight of the material retained on each screen
is detemrined.
Screen analysis can be represented by a gaph of mass fraction of the matenal retained on
each screen versus ihe average diamoter of the particle. ?he mass t'action of the material
retained on a screen
(x) is equal to the mass of the material retarnod on lhe screen divided by the
mass of the sample, The average diameter of the particle (D^) is the arithmetic mean of the
apertures of two successive screens.
For the purpose of firrther analysis, the following panicle
size representdions can be
computed:
(1) The lengih mean diameter, D,, is used in the study of co mparison ofdroplet evaporation.
"'=+,.#ii
(2) The volume mean diameter, D".r, is used in the study of distribution ofmass in a spray.
