A certain company retirement plan has a “rule of 70” provision that allows an employee to retire when the employee’ s age plus years of employment with the company total at least 70. In what year could a female employee hired in 1986 on her 30 birthday first be eligible to retire under this provision?

The odds in favour of Team India winning of a Test in 3-series Test-Cricket are 7:4 against the Australian team. If three games are to be played in the 3-series Test-Cricket, what are the odds in favour of the Team India’s winning at least one game?

Solution… • • • • • • India can loose in all the games as : 4 / 11 * 4/11 * 4/11 =64 / 1331 Thus probability of at least one game : 1- 64/1331 = 1267 / 1331 Thus odds in favour of at least one victory is : 1267: 64 answer.

The figure below shows the lengths of the sides of an equi-angular polygon. What is the area of the polygon?

www.afterschoool.tk

AFTERSCHO☺OL's MATERIAL FOR PGPSE PARTICIPANTS

17

Solution…. • The sides are either 1 or sqrt(2). We know that diagonal is sqrt(2) * side. Thus the cross sides have actual side of 1 each if we consider it a square. Thus we have 2 squares of 1 side each. Deducted from an area of 3*3 = 9 – (2) = the area is 7 answer.

In the figure below, ABC is an equilateral triangle having each side 4cm. ABC is formed by joining the centres A, B and C of the three circles where the radius of each circle is 2 cm. The area of the shaded portion is —

AFTERSCHO☺OL's MATERIAL FOR PGPSE PARTICIPANTS

19

Solution…

• • • • • Each angle of the triangle is 60 degree. Let us find area of circle : Pi * radius * radius =22/7*2*2= 12.57 The area of side of square taken by triangle is : 12.57 * 60/360 = 2.095 • Thus area of shaded region = • (sqrt(3)/4 *4*4) – (3*2.095) = .643 answer. • (instead of taking this exercise, you may take half circle as the area of un-shaded region of the trinagle).
