FIRST LESSON PLAN (ITS HALLOWEEN)

Minnesota K-12 Standard

Describe the elements of music including melody, rhythm, harmony,
dynamics, tone color, texture, form and their related concepts.
Objectives
The students will be able to read expressively using a variety of different
dynamic levels.
The students will be able to sing expressively using a variety of different
dynamic levels.
The students will know how to distinguish the different dynamic markings
from one another.
Activities
Singing in large groups and small groups.
Assessment
Assessment will be through observation of small groups. The class will be
split into small groups and each will sing the song with proper dynamics.
Rationale
It is important for the students to learn about dynamics because to be a
musician or knowledgeable about music expression is a key element to learn
how to express and distinguish.
Academic Language
Dynamics i.e. p, mp, f, mf, crescendo, decrescendo
Tempo
Coda
Mood
Adaptations
Possible accommodations that may need to be made are maybe in the small
group singing. This may be hard for some students with IEPs. But I believe
that these students will still be able to fully participate. If a problem arises we
will simply keep the class moving.
Materials
No materials needed for this activity.
Preparation for Learning
Going over what the dynamic markings mean so all students are clear.
Explaining that we will be learning a fun song about Halloween.
Reminding the students what coda means.
Presentation, Integration and Application of Information
Chant the song to the students using appropriate dynamic markings.
Chant the song line by line using appropriate dynamics so the students learn
the chant.
Have the students chant using appropriate dynamic markings.
Sing the song to the students with appropriate dynamic markings.
Ask the students what dynamic markings they heard and where.
Sing the song for the students again (if they missed any markings help them
find where they were).
Teach the song to the students line by line being sure to incorporate dynamic
markings.
Once correct markings, rhythms, and pitches are in place they students are
ready to sing this as a group.
After making full sure all the students are comfortable with pitches, rhythm,
and dynamic markings split the group into smaller groups.
Assessment
Have the small groups sing encouraging correct pitch, rhythm, and dynamics
and assess through observation.
Closure
Explain to the students that next time they will get the opportunity to create
their own story with their own dynamic markings, so they should start
thinking about something they would like to write that is fall or Halloween
themed.
