This journal contains six types of visual communication taken from different media that exist in today’s society. The main goal is to analyze the how those images try to send a message to their audience, what is the message and what are the purposes behind this message. In other words, what does the image tells you, and how should you react after being exposed to it? Of course, the interpretation of each image varies from a person to another, depending on numerous “variable” such as the person’s background, its impressions on the subject presented and many others. The following work represents my interpretation on the presented images. Entry # 1
This piece of art is called: City nights by Megan Duncanson. It can also be called Colors of Lights. It is a combination of two things: what we see around these days and of course, the artist’s imagination. Bright, rich colors and abstract composition draws us in for a long- lasting enriching experience .This image states a commercial hub “downtown” where you can find skyscrapers, offices, restaurants, clubs, residents
(apartments), shopping malls, places for entertainment and much more. The work is stating the “night life” and how beautiful it can be. The color red can describe many different feelings like: danger, alert, attention and evilness and in this picture revolving around the "Downtown" region, the color red in the sky shows that many bad things can happen in downtown. It can get really dangerous since there is so much going on in downtowns in nighttime; drug dealing, being one of the deadly addictions nowadays. It indicates how drugs have been so common between us and destroying our lives. Sex, clubbing, drinking and dancing are all part of it. On the contrary, the blue sky is all about peace, happiness and freedom away from downtown. The audience for this art can be the police and the justice system because they should know what problems the city has and how they can be fixed and most importantly it can also be pointed to the youngsters so that they can stay away from evil places and prevent themselves from doing wrong things. Implication: the understanding is right. It makes us understand about all the bad things and the good things happening in this world and also what terrible things can happen. It warns us on where we should be and where we shouldn’t be. Knowing our rights and ours wrongs. Ethically this elegant piece of art would pertain to reality and morality, showing clear examples of life and freedom. Politically it shows the problems in the city and the importance of an action that should be taken against it. We should to start improving ourselves at what we are lacking behind by taking higher security measures. In conclusion, this beautiful artwork shows the peace, love, happiness, sadness and evil of our world today.
As everybody can see, this picture represents four American soldiers doing their “job” in Iraq. But wait a minute! I thought they went there to fight for peace and to offer to population of that country a better political system and a bunch of other rights that every human being should have. When the war started, this is what they were saying, the news on the TV and in the newspapers. Is there a possibility that the information was changed, that we were not being told everything? Just take a look at this image, and you will find the answer. This is a very good example of how an image can talk from itself. I mean, they can tell you that the Americans went in Iraq for political and security reasons, but when you know that they are one of the first petroleum consumers in the world…and they don’t have enough on their territory, photographs like this talk, and they have a lot to say, to everybody! Seeing four soldiers installing a machine that extracts petroleum doesn’t look like war to me. And of course, things like this happened and will continue happening as
long as the government can control the information we get. You will never see an image like this in a newspaper or on the TV, because they don’t want you to know what they are doing there. They don’t want you to think about it, because the truth may come up. They just want you to live your life and ignore the reasons why you can have as much gasoline as you want, as long as the money does in their pockets. Images like this, which can raise questions marks in people’s heads, are extremely important from the political and ethical point of view. Some people have plenty of reasons to keep them down, but ethically, they should be shown to the entire world. In this way, the meaning of “war” may change for many of us.
This is an advertisement, called: “Innovate or die”. The word innovate means to begin or introduce something new or as it for first time. They are looking for innovative ways of channeling pedaling power into energy and everyday use. They held a pedal powered
machine contest all based on simple mechanics of bicycle. The concept behind is very meaningful and interesting. This work states how we can help change our world by just pedaling through. It suggests us to think out of the box and come up with ideas to save our planet. If you will break the chain then the connection will be gone for eternity. The entrepreneurial creative minds are the best for innovation. It gives us the courage to reach high and touch the sky. Innovate! Concentrate with all your power to come up with extraordinary ideas that nobody has considered before. If you visualize it, you will automatically understand that when you will pedal the earth is going to rotate on its axis. It is stating that it is time to get down to some serious business and worry about our future. Globalization. We can save energy! All it will take us some pedaling to be done!. It is in our hands to save the planet we live in today. Implication: aware us bout what is happening and what can be done to prevent it. Our present is our future. It makes us understand that we need to respond to this as quickly as possible. “ Innovate or die”. The audience of this advertisement targets towards average person. It implicates to everybody. Ethically this advertisement pertains to reality and to the future with a great message reaching out to everybody out there. Politically it shows the action we need to take to prevent the problems that we are already facing regarding the planet. In the end, this advertisement sets a good example for the other companies to stand up and innovate!
This is a work of art done by Banksy called: The last glorious days. The title says it all. This image includes a big poster that says “sales ends today” which we usually see in stores (clothes, furniture, utensils, shoe wear, electronics and so on). We see usually see this sign when the stores wants most of their items to be sold out as soon as possible. The color red attracts people, which is one of their strategies. This work states about the conditions of the shoppers who literally “pray” for the sale to go on for a long period. In the expense world we live in today, who would not pray to God to answer their prayers? It is hysterical in a way that how can people go crazy about shopping and are ready to go on their knees so they can find a cheap item but quality also counts. The ladies in the image who are bowed down in front of the sign “sale ends today” gives clear indications about how much it means to them. A question pops up in my head that why there are only women in the pictures? Because men shop too but I think shopping around and doing, bargaining is the women’s job. Implication: it makes us understand the importance of shopping for the
women and sale or discount counts the most. The audience of this advertisement targets the “ shoppoholics” ( anybody who cant wait for the sale period to come). It all makes sense. For example, if I want to buy an Ipod touch but I am like crazy about it and I can’t wait to buy it! I buy the gadget and it’s very expensive. Now after some time, the sale is on! And I find the same gadget for a lower price. What I am asking is what do you prefer? So begging for sale is not after all that absurd. Ethically it explains that saving is a kind of blessing. Politically it shows that the prices have increased over a certain period of time and now since it is getting out of hand so eventually people are begging for the sales to go on. To finish, there is nothing negative about this Work of art. Actually I think it stands as a big warning for all those who made sale-time their God. Entry #5
Fear Factor was an American stunt/dare reality game show. It was a very popular reality show watched by millions of people. It was so popular that it had international versions and
was quite successful. The main idea of the game was to test your fear level, your physical ability, and your mind power. It was highly appreciated by young audience since it was very entertaining and challenging. People actually participated in this reality TV show, fighting all their fear to win 50,000 $. The whole idea of this show was to do what they were told to do as fast as possible and finish it properly. People participated in big numbers and some of them came over their fear and some of them got more into it. I just cannot understand that for money people are ready to play with their lives. In this reality show, they ask you to do something “big”, something “horrible” which you have never thought about it before and that what makes it interesting for the viewers. It has a big influence on our lives. It has its positives points and negatives points. Being on the positive side: The world is full of good deeds and we get opportunities to do them and when we don’t it’s usually out of fear. Perhaps, after watching this show, someone got courage to do what he has to do and now he/she is totally fearless. It really doesn’t have to be something nasty but we are speaking about it generally. It depends how one looks at it but it can be a source of help. Coming to the negative side: This is quite convincing. Since the youth is very fond of this TV show, it can have a great influence on them since they believe everything very quickly. They can try doing the stunts or dare someone to do one of those things. Like eat an insect alive , jump off from a fourstorey building , walk around naked in public , walk through fire , a car crash and so on (free your imagination ). It can change their way of thinking. It was suppose to be an interesting reality show which everybody use to watch when it used to be aired. It affects everyone in a unique way and maybe some people might not need to get over their fear. In
my opinion, these kinds of reality should not be approved to be on air. As for Fear Factor, it got cancelled long time ago being one of the reasons I mentioned here above. Majority of people says that it got cancelled for good and cannot believe that it was on for that long. Moreover, it is effecting our young generation. In conclusion, we are responsible for our doings and it is very important to visualize the effects of what we see. Entry #6
This is a picture took by myself, at the Cartier metro station, in Laval. It is an advertisement that informs people about this new boutique. There is no problem in advertising people, since everybody does it, we’ve got so use to it that if you ask people, randomly, they will say it’s normal to have ads everywhere, even if it’s not. But the
problem with this specific ad, what made me think twice when I saw it, was the way that is used to present the information. In those days it is so common to use the women’s body in order to sell as many products as possible, that you end up with advertisements like this in the metro, and not only there. You just have to go downtown, or in a crowded place, like a shopping mall, and images like that one would be part of what you’ll see. What can an image like this express in term of art and culture? Well, you can say that the creator of such images knows how to awake what he wants in what viewers’ emotions, and since is on a wall in a metro station, it addresses to every traveler, disregarding its age and its values. Of course, this image has a political meaning being used by that shop to attract as many costumers as possible, by posting a draw with an almost naked woman in the metro. Is this ethically fair? Well, as far as I’m concerned, I would say no, definitely. At least not in the metro, not in any public place where everybody can see it. The danger that comes with it is mainly the fact that being exposed to such images, the way we see women in the society, and their place, may be altered, towards a commercial meaning. Works like this are all around us, but we should learn to stand against them and not to let them influence the way we think, mainly regarding the women’s body. Conclusion: This journal shows how important the images are, and how meaningful they can be. We should be aware and think twice, before letting any type of visual communication influence our way of thinking and our values.
