A. GLOBAL SPEAKING NEWS

NSA/US NAME CHANGE: FALLOUT
“Platform is the NEW! Coke”

The greatest surprise at the San Diego convention was a name change from
National Speakers Association of the US to a title and subtitle of

The mostly negative uproar is giving me a subject to report. One female speaker
even declared the O with an arrow introduces an offensive sexual visual. Welcome
to “Platform Gate.”

Shep Hyken, new president of NSA, says in his
video released on 7 July, that the proposed
change is on pause and under study. Next, see
Shep’s July 7 video at:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jkZKeKKfhF

He asks that comments be sent to
Platform@NSAspeaker.org

When NSA president Shep Hyken was asked about the use of the word “pause,” he
answered:
“By pause we meant pause, catch our breath, regroup and determine the best steps
to move forward. Our executive committee and board are meeting soon and we’ll
have some more concrete answers for you shortly. We need time to sort through
the comments. While many are from people who are clearly upset, they make good
points and must be considered. Please know we have the best interest of the
Association in mind and will be acting accordingly. Thanks for your patience and I
promise to get back to everyone soon with more answers.“

Stacy Tetschner, NSA CEO, said in a video interview on May 17, 2013, more than a
year ago:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmfhrupeOQg
In the video, Stacy says:

“National Speakers Association isn’t a brand that people are looking to get involved
with, but there are other cause related things that we do that many of these folks
would love to get involved with. “
“We may be looking at, okay, National Speakers isn’t our name going forward.”

It has been reported that NSA/US has spent around $100,000 so far on the name
change. Some of that went to an Internet name broker for the URL Platform.net.

Shep Hyken circulated another video on July 11. See it at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R31fcvo9gX4&feature=youtu.be&inf_contact_k

There may be some confusion with the International Platform Association
based in Washington, DC. Founded 1831. The IPA is run by Mitchell P.
Davis. See
http://www.internationalplatform.org
http://PlatformGate.com

A further complication is the question of who owns the word
“Platform.” See Michael Hyatt’s http://michaelhyatt.com/platform

Some name changes in industry have been
announced, rejected by the public, and rolled back.
NEW! Coke is an example.

Stacy Tetschner, CEO of NSA/US writes:

“Thank you for your comments on our recent branding initiative. We appreciate
your perspective and the time you took to write us.

“As we mentioned in our previous communications, we are in the process of
reviewing all feedback and comments, both positive and negative, as well as
forming a member advisory board.

“We will be in contact with you regarding next steps.

“Once again, thank you.”

Stacy

On July 14, NSA president Shep Hyken sent out another video, withdrawing from

WARREN EVANS, CANADA, ON ASSOCIATION NAMING.

> NSA is under no obligation of any kind to consult anyone except its own
membership, on this or any other national issue.

>this is an internal decision by one of the GSF's member associations.

>I'm sure our US colleagues appreciate the input from all sources, but if we choose
to offer ours, let's keep in mind as we do so that this is their discussion about their
association and
their decision.

Answered by Dan Poynter of the U.S.
Thank you for acknowledging that the NSA name change issue is an NSA/US issue.
But the issue does affect the other ten GSF associations because it prompts them to
rethink the names of their organizations.

Currently the associations are named:
AFCP Association Française des EXPERTS & Conférenciers Professionnels
APSS Asia Professional Speakers - Singapore
CAPS Canadian Association of Professional Speakers
GSA German Speakers Association
MAPS Malaysian Association of Professional Speakers
NSAA National Speakers Association of Australia
NSANZ National Speakers Association of New Zealand
NSAUS National Speakers Association of the US
PSAH Professional Speakers Association Holland
PSASA Professional Speakers Association of Southern Africa
PSAUKI Professional Speaking Association UK & Ireland
AFCP recently added “experts” to their name. BTW, the French

5
use Conférenciers because that is the closest word they have for professional
speakers.
GSA. The Germans have been considering a name change. Perhaps using German
words rather than English.
PSASA. Started as NSASA and changed to Professional. I think they were “South
Africa” at one time and expanded to “Southern Africa.”
PSAUKI began as PSA, then PSAUK, then PSAUKI with the additional of Northern
Ireland. They also changed from Speaker to Speaking.

Some of the other "National associations" have considered a change to
“Professional."
Now they may consider alternative words.

Some federation associations are not “national;" some are language.
GSA includes Germany, Austria, and (German-speaking part of) Switzerland.

I am the 8.5-year editor of the Global Speakers NewsBrief.
BTY, The Global Speakers Network has 254 members.
The NewsBrief goes to them plus 924 other professional speakers. Plus 122
speaking bureaus. 1,300 in all.

And, I have spoken at all of the international speaking conventions and most of the
speaking chapters worldwide.
I have my fingers on the pulse of all the federation associations.

So thank you for your observation that name changes are a local issue
but changes by any of the 11 federation associations make the members of the
other ten reconsider their own names.

Lenora Billings-Harris, President, Global Speakers Federation 2014-2015 posted on
CSPlink:
“As the president of the Global Speakers Federation, I have been in contact with
the full Federation Council and all Federation association member presidents
regarding this branding issue and it's impact or lack thereof on their association
names.”

AIRBUS PATENTS WINDOWLESS COCKPIT

Imagine showing up at the airport to catch your flight, looking at your plane, and
noticing that instead of windows, the cockpit is now a smooth cone of aluminum. It
may seem like the worst case of quality control in history, but Airbus argues that
this could be the airliner of the future. In a new US patent application, the EU
aircraft consortium outlines a new cockpit design that replaces the traditional
cockpit with one that uses 3D view screens instead of conventional windows.

What is next? Airplanes flown from the ground by drone geeks?

HOW TO DELIVER A STRONG SPEECH
-- Alan Stevens, UK, past GSF President, alan@mediacoach.co.uk

Delivering a strong speech depends on a number of things. Here are
five elements that I think are very important:

1) Insight. Your audience expects you to be well-informed on your
topic. You need to be general enough to get your ideas across, but
show that you have an insight that no-one else has come up with.

2) Analogies/Parallels. You need to be able to demonstrate how a
current situation relates to one that has gone before. This makes it much easier for
your audience to understand. .

3) Evidence. It's no good making statements that you can't justify. You need to
provide examples to support your argument, rather than to make your argument.

4) Endorsement. This is like calling an expert witness in a court case. If you can
cite (other) acknowledged experts who agree with you, it makes your case much
stronger.

5) Humour. This is not (definitely not) joke-telling. Leave that to the stand-up
comedians. Your humour should be natural and in context with the speech
If you can combine all those five elements, your speech will be strong and
purposeful. All you need to do then is to deliver it well.
