August 13, 2013 Mobile HD voice: Global Update report Mobile HD voice service using AMR Wideband
Mobile HD voice based on AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) Wideband technology (W-AMR) enables high-quality voice calls in mobile networks and an improved user experience. It provides significantly higher voice quality for calls between mobile phones supporting the feature and is implemented and market reality today in GSM, UMTS (WCDMA- HSPA) and LTE networks around the world.
The higher voice quality using HD voice improves the call experience, allowing people to better share feelings, do business and communicate information. HD voice transmits a broader spectrum of the human voice; therefore conversation is more natural and is likened to speaking to the other party in the same room. HD voice also helps people hear better in noisy environments.
HD voice helps operators to differentiate their offerings and enable high quality services to voice dependent business like call center services, information services, emergency services, etc. HD voice is ideal for conference calls and can contribute to a reduction in business travel and raise productivity while reducing environmental impact. Calls which are easier to hear and understand reduce fatigue often associated with long conference calls. HD voice represents the greatest advance in voice on mobile networks in decades.
W-AMR speech technology is standardized in 3GPP Release 5. The W-AMR speech- compression algorithm doubles voice bandwidth (507000 Hz) compared to the current narrowband speech codec (300 3400 Hz) without extra radio or transmission requirements. According to 3GPP, 12.65 kbit/s or higher coding bit- rates provide high-quality wideband audio (lower bit-rates of 8.85 and 6.6 kbit/s are for temporary use during adverse radio conditions or periods of cell congestion). In subjective tests the HD voice wideband codec produces better results than the best narrow-band codec.
83 mobile networks launched HD voice service 84% growth year-on-year Now available in 61 countries 26 countries more than one year ago 245 HD voice mobile phones announced
HD voice service is launched on 83 mobile networks in 61 countries: Armenia, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Rep., Denmark, Dominican Rep., Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Moldova, Montenegro, Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Runion, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, Uganda, UK, Ukraine, and USA.
The maximum benefits from using HD voice on a compatible mobile network are realized when both calling and called party use HD voice- capable phones. Improvements in call quality are also observed even when using an HD voice-enabled phone to call a non-HD voice phone, due to improvements in the acoustic performance and advanced noise reduction capabilities of most HD voice phones. There is a strong business case for Mobile HD voice:
10.000 Vip (Serbia) customers make HD voice calls daily. Orange Romania reported 10x the number of HD voice calls initiated in Q3 2012 compared to Q3 2011, and 85% of users observed notable differences between an HD and standard call. Orange France stated:
572 HSPA Operator commitments in 209 countries/territories 532 commercial operators are launched in 203 countries including 338 commercial HSPA+ networks in 148 countries HSPA Operator Commitments report - October 7, 2013 The path to mobile broadband began with WCDMA, a 3GPP global standard. The first evolution of WCDMA - High Speed Packet Access (HSPA), reduced latency and boosted capacity and user data speeds.
All WCDMA operators have launched HSPA. HSPA is the leading mobile broadband technology globally with 532 networks commercially launched in 203 countries.
Capacity and performance improve again with HSPA Evolution (HSPA+). Over 63% of HSPA operators have commercially launched HSPA+. 338 HSPA+ networks are commercially launched in 148 countries.
Deployment of 42 Mbps DC-HSPA+ technology continues as a major trend in 2013. 145 DC-HSPA+ networks (over 27% of all HSPA networks) are commercially launched in 75 countries.
3GPP Release 9 combines multicarrier and MIMO technologies in 10 MHz bandwidth to achieve 84 Mbps peak downlink, and some operators have committed to deploy this evolution step.
313 operators (over 58%) have commercially launched HSUPA. 244 operators (i.e. 78% of commercial HSUPA systems) support 5.8 Mbps peak data throughput on the uplink. A further 18 networks support 11.5 Mbps.
Using multicarrier on the uplink doubles the peak rate to 23 Mbps. A number of operators are committed to this evolution step. Standardization beyond Release 9 leads to realization of downlink data speeds exceeding 100 Mbps.

Almost 70 countries permit or are considering allowing UMTS900 system deployments
UMTS900 user devices are MAINSTREAM
UMTS900 Benefits Deploying 3G voice and mobile broadband coverage using 2100 MHz in all areas is too costly, impractical and takes too long for many operators. Radio propagation path-loss at 900 MHz is much less and for the same service offer and coverage the number of sites is below half that needed in 2100 MHz, with faster rollout time. Indoor coverage is also improved using 900 MHz. UMTS900 can complement 2100 MHz deployments to improve coverage, reduce CAPEX and OPEX, improve quality of service and enhance the user experience. UMTS900 operators can provide HSPA over much larger areas in a very cost-efficient way. GSM operators can also re-use many existing network assets e.g. antennas, network management systems.
Regulatory aspects In Europe, mobile phones operate to GSM specifications typically in 2 bands: 900 MHz (880915/925960 MHz) and 1800 MHz (17101785/18051880 MHz). On July PLUS: charts and maps (jpeg and PDF files) http://www.gsacom.com/news/statistics Topic zones on www.gsacom.com 16
