MODULE 3
Development of Technical Vocational Education

The history of Technical Vocational Education in the Philippines can be
traced even before the American colonization in the country. As a matter of fact,
even before Magellan landed on Mactan historical records showed that the early
Filipino settlers had already developed some form of formal education It was a
mixture of academic and vocational training.
During Spanish occupation, the focus of study was Spanish language and
culture, and the Christian values. Spanish authorities failed to recognize the
importance of vocational education in the development of the country until the
later part of their colonial rule.
During the American occupation, education was well organized. They built
institutions for academic and vocational courses. It was proven during that time
that education was an effective instrument in the socio-economic development of
the country.
