THE PLACER HERALD
A
mere glance into lobby of Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-
beque may not reveal its unique, storied character. The
decades-long tradition is not something that will be
seen, but experienced.
It’s not the classic American décor, or immediately identi-
fiable smell of high-grade smoked meat that spells out the
folklore. Lucille’s presents a feeling of comfort and accom-
modation as patrons cross the threshold into the lobby.
Where presentation and ambiance do little to differentiate
the smokehouse from other chain restaurants, the staff of the
nearest location of this west coast chain seems to make it
their business that all customers feel as if miss Lucille grew
up right in Rocklin.
Cuisine is the primary difference maker
Southern and Midwest style barbeque are slowly reaching
a level of uniformity and proverbial blandness to rival that of
the late night diner – a level at which menus and feel have
become so similar to one another, Denny’s is the “illustrious”
standard to which the rest are held.
Lucille’s breaks up the monotony. Despite its 13 locations
in three states, the taste, presentation and quality leave one
thinking “I can’t get this at any old restaurant.”

As the “about” section of the
chain’s website explains, the
woman for whom it is named
spent the summers of her
youth learning family recipes
from her grandmother.
Each table holds three house
barbeque sauces. Sauces and
condiments are of particular
importance in Lucille’s kitchen.
“Special spice rubs and
savory wet ‘mops’ and sauces
Lucille had to swear she’d never
share with a soul” is the compa-
ny’s motto.
The broad selection of ribs,
tri tip, jambalaya and several
other classic dishes are each
accented appropriately with
these condiments and crèmes.
Even the complimentary bis-
cuits are served with a house
shortening. But the accents are
not meant to overpower sub-
par perpetration. Meats are
smoked to gratifying tender-
ness.
Seafood dishes and sand-
wiches are seasoned to arouse
even the most stubborn of
palettes.
While the dessert menu cov-
ers all its bases with cobbler,
cakes and puddings, the focus
remains on the originality and
signature recipes of the main
courses, perhaps indicative of a
“stay in your lane” philosophy
from the establishment.
If smokehouse barbeque is
all one seeks, as the name
implies, Lucille’s will not disap-
point.
With three seating areas,
each separate from one anoth-
er by experience and appeal,
the restaurant provides for a
classic, homey experience
indoors, outdoors or in a bar
setting.
It’s location near highway 65
provides for easy access
throughout the area.
Lucille’s allows the tradition
and reassurance of a chain
without the dreariness of mass
production.

this spring with the open-

more than two in success
with Boneshaker Public

Anderson said the new
brewery, which opened at

Rocklin at the end of April,
is an expansion of what he
started with the Bone-
shaker pub in October
2011 but a different con-
cept – a beer manufactur-
er and full restaurant, as
opposed to a tap house
for other local beers. It’s a
new endeavor for the
long-time connoisseur,
and the product of many
years studying the trade.
“I grew up here but I
went to school at Chico,

of like mother’s milk to

beers,” he said. “Then

my mom, who is the general
manager here as well, and there
you’re immersed in the craft
beer culture.”
After graduating from con-
sumer to businessman, Ander-
son decided he wanted to one
day brew his own ales but
couldn’t afford it right away. He
moved back to Rocklin to be
with his family and open a pub,
which he did on Sunset Boule-
vard, finding little competition
in the local market at the time.
“It was always my goal to
open a brewery when I first
came back to this area, but
starting out with a full-scale
brewery is a pretty expensive
proposition,” he said. “I wasn’t
in a position to be able to do
that right away, and this whole
area was pretty void of craft
beers at the time, so we decided
to open up the tap house and
bring in quality microbrews
from all over the place.”
Anderson said the local craft
beer scene has grown consider-
ably over the past two years,
and now Boneshaker Public
House is going strong with 21
beers on tap from other local
brewers.
Given the success of the pub,
Anderson wanted to revisit his
original vision – a brewery. He
took a “leap of faith” on incor-
porating a restaurant, too, when
he found a venue with a
kitchen, outdoor patio and
ample seating.
“The space was available, and
we felt like if we wanted to do an
actual brew pub with a restau-
rant and everything, we wanted

to do it in Rocklin and stay in the
community we started in,” he said.
Bar manager Paul Ruano at the
pub said the difference between the
two Boneshakers comes down to
selection – a lineup of local craft
brews and bar food at one, and in
the other a smaller selection of in-
home beers and full restaurant serv-
ice.
“We’re focusing more on craft
beers of different local breweries,
while the brewery on Granite (Dri-
ve) is only going to have the beers
they’re brewing there,” he said. “The
kitchen is huge there, so they have
more food and it’s more of a restau-
rant feel. There you’ll have a waiter
and host. Here you have to come up
to the pub to order drinks and
food.”
Anderson said the brewery has 12
taps, one of which is reserved for a
featured guest cider while the other
11 are in-house brews.
“Style-wise, because we’re small,
it’s kind of fun. We actually have five
different yeast strains we’re working
with, so every batch we’re doing
something different,” he said. “It’s
almost the brewery equivalent of
the pub, where we’re rotating all the
beers … from the super-hoppy to
German-style lagers, some Belgian
styles, English pub ales and then
traditional west-coast hoppy beers
as well.”
Anderson said he has already
started looking for another off-site
venue in either Rocklin, Roseville or
Lincoln to increase his brewing
capacity, not to become a huge
franchise but to broaden Boneshak-
ers’ selection and distribution.

BEST PAINTING CONTRACTOR
W
ith more than 20 years of
experience of helping
homeowners see their
make-over dreams come true,
Tim Perryman Painting contin-
ues to be a go-to contractor that
the Rocklin community trusts.
The Placer Herald sat down
with the company’s Christie
Perryman to discuss the chal-
lenges and rewards of working
in the painting industry.
On a day–to-day basis, what is
the most rewarding part of run-
ning a painting operation?
“We work very hard each and
every day. When I speak to a
client that is extremely happy
with a job we have completed
for them it really makes my day
and puts a smile on my face.
There really is no better feeling
than running our own business.
I think all of our painters would
say the same thing.”
What has been the most inter-
esting painting job of the year so
far, and what challenges did it
present?
“Probably a 3,300-sq-foot
house we recently completed in
Roseville. We had to install new
7” crown molding throughout
the house, re-stain and lacquer
all of the light oak cabinets and
railings to a dark cherry, and
repaint the entire interior while
the client was staying there.
Everything seemed to take
longer than we anticipated, but
in the end everything came out
looking great. Definitely one of
the nicest finishes we have
done on cabinets. And our
client was really happy with
everything.”
Is there any kind of painting
job you haven’t tried yet that
you think would be a fun chal-
lenge?
“We’ve done apartments,
tract homes, custom homes,
schools, big box stores, huge
office buildings and industrial
projects. I’ve always enjoyed
doing the painting part of those
projects, but I hated all of the
politics and legal parts of that
type of business. If I didn’t have
to deal with that, I’d love to
paint a bridge. The tower bridge
in Sacramento would be a fun
one! I think that would be a
great challenge for us.”
What is the one thing people
don’t know about painting that
they really should know?
“The time it takes to redo
cabinets the right way. Most
kitchen cabinets take a week for
a team of two guys. Sometimes
we spend more hours on a set
of cabinets than we do on a
complete interior.
What does a ‘Best of the Best’
win say about the relationship
you have with your customers?
“We truly care about our
employees. They are like family
to us. When your workers are
happy they want to make your
clients happy. They are the ones
that earned this award. We put a
tremendous amount of effort
into training our people on the
importance of making our
clients happy. We wouldn’t be
where we are today without
each and every one of our team
members.”

ell Brothers Plumbing,

to be a go-to source during
the hottest moments of South
Placer’s summers and the cold-
est spells of its winters. The
Placer Herald recently asked the
company’s Director of Market-
ing, Lauren Edvalson, how Bell
Brothers keeps expanding its
reach.
What are the most exciting
business developments with Bell
Bros. in the last year or two?
“We have had a lot of big
changes to our business in the
last two years. We had com-
pletely outgrown our office
space, to the point where we
had to stagger shifts because we
couldn’t fit any more desks in
the office. It was pretty comical
at times. Just about two years
ago we were able to acquire a
long time bank-owned facility
that was perfect for us on Math-
er Air Force Base. Although we
loved the space, the building
needed a lot of work. We had a
slow and steady approach to
getting moved in, and finally
got most of our employees over
to the building in February.”
What is Bell Bros. philosophy
on keeping customer service
high?
“We constantly talk about
customer service with our
teams. We share success stories
of employees going above and
beyond for clients as well as
positive client feedback. We
also share failures which gives
our staff an opportunity to
learn from mistakes. Fortunate-
ly we have staff that are pas-
sionate about doing the right
thing for our clients. We know
you can never make everyone
happy 100 percent of the time
but we sure try our hardest to
get there. Beyond that, our
guarantees are designed to pro-
tect our clients investment in
our company. Every one of our
staff members are empowered
to do what is right for the client.
How does the employee team
at Bell Bros. feel about winning
in the Best of the Best?
“The timing is great, we are in
the heart of our busy season
and it really gives our employ-
ees a boost of moral. They all
work so hard, and we know they
are great, but it’s so nice to have
the validation from our clients.
There is no better compliment
in our business than our clients
sharing their satisfaction. Over-
all we feel honored and inspired
to live up to the title.”

once again dominating South Plac-

planning. A company bearing the same
name as the once popular, temporarily
defunct cupcake franchise held its lav-

In a release, the company said its
shop at 6839 Lonetree Blvd. will serve
more than 35 varieties of gourmet cup-
cakes, cookie sandwiches and brown-
ies that are baked fresh with “artistic
appeal.”
The late Spring grand opening
launch featured free samples, prizes,

back, the company still managed to
land a Best of the Best win for 2014. The
cupcake revamp also plans to get back

Executive Director, Cathy Katz, “We

served our country.”

States Marine Corps veteran, is a six
year resident of the community and
served over 40 years in the military.
During that time he was in WWII, in
which he was involved in five beach
landings, and then served three com-
bat tours in Korea, where he earned
the Bronze Star for his actions. He also
did two combat tours in Vietnam.
Wiping away a tear, Overgaard

“Every step you took was the one

The debut of the Wall of Honor was

fficials for the City of Rock-
lin say they have taken a
pro-business stance to
encourage more economic
activity in their jurisdiction by
lowering business license taxes.
The Rocklin City Council
recently approved reductions to
the City’s business license tax
structure that caps the cost of a
business license at $125. Offi-
cials said the move reduces the
cost of doing business in Rock-
lin while owners to instead
invest those same dollars in to
their operations.
The Council’s action was the
third move in a four-year effort
to reduce the business license
tax rate in Rocklin. The current
business license tax structure
varies depending on the type of
business applying. The tax for
many business types is deter-
mined using a formula based
on annual gross receipts. The
formula previously had no cap
and resulted in very high annual
business taxes for some of the
city’s largest employers, as well
as those with high-value prod-
ucts.
“Our business community
raised concerns that our busi-
ness license tax put Rocklin at a
disadvantage and we listened.”
Rocklin Mayor, Scott Yuill said
in a statement. “Although
reducing our business license

tax rate meant a reduction in
city revenue, the council felt in
the long run, this would be off-
set by additional revenue gen-
erated through the attraction of
more and larger businesses.”
To help mitigate the impact
to the city’s budget, the council
directed staff to phase the
reductions over four years. In
2012, the first year of reduc-
tions, the cap was set at
$100,000. In 2013, it was
reduced to $3,000. Council’s lat-
est action reduces the maxi-
mum businesses pay to $125
annually. City officials claimed
many businesses may pay even
less. The only exception to the
$125 cap is rentals or hotels that
are taxed on a per unit basis.
Rocklin City Council also
directed its staff to return next
year with additional recom-
mendations to achieve the goal
set in 2012 of creating a reduced
and simplified flat tax for all
businesses.
“We now have one of the low-
est business license tax rates in
the region, but there’s more we
can do to make sure businesses
know they are valued here in
Rocklin,” said Yuill. “In addition
to fee reductions, we want to
simplify the process so that
determining the correct fee and
applying for or renewing a busi-
ness license is quick and easy.”
The change to the City’s Busi-
ness License Tax also fulfills an
objective adopted by Council in
the City’s Strategic
Plan and Community Invest-
ment Plan.
City reels in Bass Pro Shop
Rocklin’s pro-business strate-
gies seem to have paid off this
year by landing a new, major
retailer at the Rocklin Crossings
complex — one is geared
toward people who typically
prefer the great outdoors to
shopping malls.
Bass Pro Shops will open a
120,000-square-foot store at the
intersection of Interstate 80 and
Sierra College Boulevard in
2015, making it the franchise’s
fourth location in California
after others in Rancho Cuca-
monga, Manteca and, immi-
nently, San Jose.
Bass Pro Shops currently has
84 locations open or in devel-
opment in the U.S. and Canada,
which resemble log cabins on
the outside while housing elab-
orate indoor displays of trees
and rocks, caves, mounted ani-
mals, waterfalls and streams
stocked with local fish species.
A statement from Bass Pro
Shops said the store will feature
equipment for outdoorsmen
and women of any stripe –
hunters, fishers, hikers, back-
packers, wildlife watchers,
campers and others. A gift and
nature center will sell outdoor-
themed products like lamps,
dishes, bird feeders and furni-
ture, and fishing boat show-
rooms will offer models from
the world’s leading manufactur-
ers.
The store will also include a
nautical-themed family restau-
rant, Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and
Grill, with 12 bowling lanes and
a casual dining menu of appe-
tizers, sandwiches, salads and
burgers.
Bass Pro Shops spokes-
woman Katie Mitchell said she
expects the store will serve close
to 2 million people in and
around Northern California,
and per tradition, it will inte-
grate local history and scenery
into the decorum.
“There’s a certain theme and
format they follow, of course,
but we also customize each

store and make it unique to
that particular area so it
reflects the outdoor tradi-
tions of that area. We even
search and comb antique
places and people who offer
up donations, so we get actu-
al old items … old boats,
trolling motors, lures, even
taxidermy pieces, and the
historical pictures we hang
throughout the store will be
of residents in that area,” she
said. “We’re going to incorpo-
rate scenes from the Sierra
Nevada mountains, Sacra-
mento Valley, any unique
geographic features of the
area.”
Rocklin resident Rocky
McElveen, a lifelong outdoor
enthusiast who has authored
several nature books and
leads regular hunting expedi-
tions to Alaska, said he has
done book-signings and
taught hunting and fishing
seminars for Bass Pro Shop
throughout the country. To
him, the presence of a store
in Rocklin is an opportunity
draw overdue attention to
the region’s natural recre-
ation.
“It’s very interesting how
they are trying to create fam-
ily recreation: Their whole
Christmas theme with Santa,
all the games, everything,
was to get kids into the stores
looking at different ways to
spend their time,” he said.
“The recreational potential in
this area is phenomenal, and
that’s what they want to cap-
ture. You have the skiing, you
have the waterfowl and duck
hunting, you have the golf.
This is an incredibly environ-
mentally-rich outdoor place.”
Mitchell could not specify
what month or season the
store and restaurant would
open, but she said collective-
ly they would create between
250 and 300 part- and full-
time jobs.

BEST ANTIQUES
MARTHA GARCIA • LOOMIS NEWS
T.J. Henegar and his wife, Sharon Henegar, own Sarah Whitcomb Antiques &
Gifts in the Blue Goose Fruit Shed in Loomis.
How does it feel to be considered the
best of what you do in the Loomis area?
We stress to be as authentic as possi-
ble. The definition of antiques is 100
years and we strive to have true
antiques, i.e. 100 years old or older.
What do you feel sets your business
apart and earned you this distinction?
Loomis is a magic town. When T.J.
and I moved to Placer County in 2011
it didn’t take us long to discover
Loomis and the Blue Goose Fruit Shed.
We were “retired” from our antique
business in Newport Beach, but when
Randy Elder gave us a tour of the Blue
Goose the magic happened. We want
to thank the SPHF for their support
and understanding of how difficult it is
to turn a warehouse into a beautiful
store. We’re especially thankful to our
local customers who are the nicest
neighbors anywhere.
Anything you would like to say to the
people who voted for you?
It made me feel that all the hard
work that we have done is worth it and
it boosted our resolve to do even bet-
ter.
